On today's episode of Hear Me Out: amore, but make it anti-racist. Honoring interracial marriage has only been the law of the land for a few decades in this country; there are couples alive today whose relationships were illegal within their lifetimes.  There are now more mixed-race couples – and children – in the U.S. than ever before, and interracial love is overwhelmingly supported by all Americans. But is that an indication that we've actually made progress toward racial equality?  Jamilah Lemieux, writer and contributor to Slate's Care & Feeding, argues no: and that unless a couple has done the work to be truly anti-racist, their children will pay the price. In 1967 The Supreme Court unanimously struck down laws banning marriage between individuals of different races, 106 years after Maryland became the 1st state to enact MISCEGENATION laws banning INTERRACIAL MARRIAGES. However, despite the legal right to marry outside of one's race that alone has not changed the sentiments of many who still think it is wrong to do so, and some even argue it is detrimental from a COLLECTIVE RACE standpoint. For this show, we have a guest who married outside his race, another who dated outside her race most of her life, and a guest against INTERRACIAL DATING due to his PAN-AFRICAN ideology. You wouldn't be able to have a white boy on your roster that feeds you pasta and lobster if it wasn't for Mildred and Richard Loving. Fifty-six years ago on June 12, 1967, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that interracial marriage could not be prohibited by state, which meant thousands and even millions of relationships to come could be legally bound.  In honor of it being Loving week, let's look at the several marriages that were made possible, including those of Ron & Opal Perlman, Jordan Peele & Chelsea Peretti, Paula Patton & Robin Thicke, and Robert De Niro and his marriages to Diahnne Abbott and Grace Hightower and his relationship to Toukie Smith. Suzie Carter started out as a low-pay hairdresser trying to support two young girls so she decided whatever it took to create her own business. After much blood, sweat, and tears, she went on to create not one, but two ten million dollar companies. Her core genius is her ability to simplify complicated issues by creating simple, proven systems that are guaranteed to create dynamic growth. She has helped over 100,000 entrepreneurs increase their revenues by more than 3000% percent.    In this episode Dr. Gaye Lang and Susie Carder discuss: Growing up in a racist family Perception of interracial marriages  The quest to find community and acceptance Tips for surviving exclusion when in an interracial marriage   Key Takeaways:  Racist points of views often begin in the family, but once one is old and has had opportunity to broaden their view, they can choose to do what's right. Teach your children their innate worth and to not let anyone look down on them because of their color.  Raising children of color as a white single mom must not be done alone, seeking a wise role model for them that looks like them will help tremendously shape and strengthen their self-worth and love for their own culture.    “...my quest to find community, to find women and men that looked like them so that they could see beauty in every shape and size, not just this white model.” - Susie Carder   Get Susie's “Power Your Profits” Ebook by clicking on this link:  https://www.poweryourprofitsbook.com/ebook       Connect with Susie Carder: Twitter: https://twitter.com/susiecarder LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/susiecarder/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiecarder/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SusieCarder/  Website: https://susiecarder.com/    Connect with Dr. Gaye Lang: Don't forget to subscribe to the show, so that you don't miss a single episode; and please leave a rating and review. About Amy Hardeman: Education was not a choice for her as a path or vocation but it was selected for her. She's taught for 20 years, 10 years in elementary, 4 years in secondary, she also worked at an educational service center. Her journey in academia was first in the realm of special education. She taught special education as a resource teacher and as an inclusion teacher. As a special education teacher, she understood that she had to become an advocate for her students and parents. To navigate the world of education is difficult, but much more so when you're coming from a deficit socio-economic position. She became a bridge for her parents and students to succeed in the academic realm. Switching to regular education was just as arduous, students who were struggling need extra attention and support that fosters caring and a safe place to learn. As a behavior specialist for highschool, the need for a safe place to speak their truth is duly important at this age of maturity. High School students face a world that does not afford them the slow pace of maturing academically and psychologically. Many of their challenges are adult challenges. Working with highschool students taught her how to create a safe space for meaningful conversations.    In this episode Dr. Gaye Lang and Amy Hardeman Garcia discuss: Assumptions of others in minority interracial marriages  How minority interracial couples experience exclusion  Exclusion experienced by minority children  Strategies and recommendations in surviving a interracial marriage    Key Takeaways:  Within minority groups, exclusion is often based on how well you can fit in. But with white people, exclusion is more socio-economic based.  When people ask stupid racist questions, ask them why they're asking it. Don't let them make you uncomfortable - make them uncomfortable.  In any relationship, you have to always have a strong sense of self and build it too in your children.    “Being double minority, if you are doubtful of yourself and who you are in this world, the world will tear you down. You need a strong sense of identity... If you're black and mexican, you come from two points of strength.” - Amy Hardeman Garcia   Connect with Amy Hardeman Garcia: Twitter: https://twitter.com/amyeh_garcia  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amy-hardeman-garcia-333485104/    Connect with Dr. Gaye Lang: Don't forget to subscribe to the show, so that you don't miss a single episode; and please leave a rating and review. In this episode of the Demystifying Diversity Podcast, Daralyse Lyons explores the history of, and present day occurrences of, interracial love and marriages. She interviews eight interracial couples of various races, cultures, backgrounds, and sexual orientations. Throughout the episode, it becomes clear that, although every interracial couple has their own unique story, there is still something that they all share in common: six decades ago, their love would have been legally prohibited in certain states. Interracial couples have pressed forward, and their doing so has helped shift public perceptions about interracial love. However, even in 2021, many interracial couples face mockery and scorn, and this came out in many of the interviews. Now that people are free to marry across racial lines, cross-racial and cross-cultural unions have become more ubiquitous and more celebrated. The hope would be that love can melt away prejudice and bias, yet that is not always the case. This episode illuminates that loving people for who they are requires seeing them for who they are and not superimposing our own judgments onto certain individuals or groups. Getting to know people in an authentic way and moving beyond incorrect assumptions requires more representation, visibility and allyship. This episode will challenge you to examine your biases and internalized racism. It is an invitation to deepen your investment in creating a world where love, in all its myriad expressions, is not only safe but celebrated. Hosts: Isaac Adams & Trillia NewbellGuest: SharDavia WalkerOverview: “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Mark 10:9)In the opening to season two, Trillia Newbell and Isaac Adams talk and pray with SharDavia Walker about interracial marriages—the beauty of them and the difficulty of them in and outside the church. How do you humbly and honestly navigate conversations with family who don’t approve of interracial relationships? Does the Bible speak about interracial marriages? How does the message of the gospel apply to this conversation? Facing different forms of awkwardness, difficulty, and outright opposition—from humorous things to horrible things—Isaac, Trillia, and Shar reflect on God’s faithfulness to them as those who are in interracial marriages. Regarding difficulties, Shar spoke wonderfully to the need for compassion and humility, especially in a way that reminded us of Francis Grimké, the brother who inspired this podcast. In 1898, Francis said: “Let us meet in our places of worship, and there…devoutly pray to Almighty God: First, that if it is our fault that the hearts of our fellow countrymen are so cruelly turned against us, he will show us the evil, and give us the wisdom to remove it.”In other words, as we seek to be honest with others and call for repentance, let us also do the same in our own lives. May God grant us humility and honesty as we pursue unity and pray for it. It happens in my country of origin in Africa, and in the country I now call home in Europe. Is it still that shocking to see a white man and a black woman together?’ That was the exact same question that was going through my mind when my Nigerian friend who had just gotten married to her German boyfriend, was telling me this story. You would think that with all the technological advancements in the world, nothing would seem new or shocking to people, but that is wrong. People still have this absolutely wrong and absurd notion not just about Interracial Couples, but about the African/Black person in the relationship. Mentioned In This Episode: 1.
