Until recently, you probably knew Filip Sablik as President of Publishing and Marketing at Boom! Studios. After all, he was a very public cheerleader for the company (and the industry as a whole), moving Boom! into kids comics, developing acclaimed titles like Lumberjanes and Something is Killing the Children, and innovating at the retail level and on Kickstarter. But now, he's forming a brand new comic book company headed by Hollywood producer Eric Gitter and alongside former IDW head Jamie S. Rich and creator Jeremy Haun. It's going to be epic! And so is this episode. You can follow Filip on Facebook and Instagram @filipsablik.____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Get ready to pack your bags and trip out to jolly ol' Great Britain with the Third Men Podcast! This past fall, Third Man Records opened a landmark 3rd storefront and base of operations in London, England -- and this week we're diving deep into the store's opening, its exclusive TMRL releases and of course the accompanying concert performance by Jack White himself! When mysterious storefronts sporting odd names began popping up in the city's historic Soho, Londonites were left scratching their heads at such an absurd scam. But before long, these mock businesses revealed themselves to be none other than Jack White and co, and on Saturday September 25th, 2021 fans and spectators alike were greeted to the grand opening of this new TMR venture! Along with the new shop, Third Man featured several stunning new releases by artists such as David Ruffin, Paul Weller, The Jesus and Mary Chain and more -- and friend of the show Jamie S. Rich has joined us this week to run down all the details on this collection of bangers! From our side of the pond to yours, we hope you enjoy this new episode - cheers!  In today's episode we dig into the lore of a character who has been on our radar for a while. Mister Miracle. We've covered Tom King before when we read Vision, so we knew we were in for a treat. This series deals a lot with the "New Gods", created by Jack Kirby. We will give a little background before we begin, but the more you know about them the better!      Mister Miracle, or Scott Free, is an escape artist (just like young Drew). He's escaped from all sorts of traps before. As the story begins it seems he's recovering from an escape that was rather rocky.    It's important to mention that this comic can be rather graphic, both in content and in the artist depiction of those events. If you or a loved one have any history or concern over the mention of suicide, this might be a comic series you will want to be careful with. Help is available. Feedback The Sweeney Sisters by Lian Dolan (rec’d by Megan) Alastair MacLean: The Navarone series, Where Eagles Dare (rec’d by Wynnde) Questions 1. Something that I’ve been very interested in reading about is the strong bond between people forged by unique experiences. Some examples of this in literature that I’ve enjoyed are the characters in Never Let Me Go who are bonded by their childhoods and their shared horrific destiny or Ask Again, Yes who are bonded by being childhood neighbors as well as a shared tragedy. I even enjoyed this about the Hunger Games and the way the shared trauma of the games forged a tight bond between the tributes. I’m looking for other novels that have these very intimate bonds between characters brought about by certain circumstances. Other books I’ve enjoyed that also have examples of these sort of bonds: The Mothers by Brit Bennett, Commonwealth by Ann Patchett and A Children’s Bible by Lydia Millet. Thanks! -Emily 2. Hi! I’m looking for a recommendation for a friend’s birthday. She just finished The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix and has been raving about the housewife superpowers angle it takes. I’d love to get another book for her in a similar strain. She also likes the Amy Dunne of Gone Girl type of genius-borderline-crazy female characters in any book/TV show/movie so it can also lean in that direction. Thank you!! -Carol 3. I just got a new job that is for a company based in Belgium. Eventually after Covid I will get a chance to go out and visit the main office. Can you suggest some books based in Belgium or with a general Belgium- feel (this is called Belgitude!) Thanks! -Jordan 4. My name is Andy and I’m writing to ask for three different book recommendations (all in one email hehehe). First, I’m looking for a book, either fiction or nonfiction (or both, if you can) about archaeology. It seems such an exciting field. I’m looking for a book that gives those adventurous vibes but that also teaches me something about history and what that entails.  Secondly, a fiction book set in a museum. I’m looking for something exciting that makes me think, too! And finally, if you can, a nonfiction book about countries that had recovered from a civil war and how they did it. I had not mentioned before but I’m originally from Venezuela and though my country hasn’t gone through a civil war (in the strict sense), the recovery (if it ever does recover) would probably be something similar. I’ll like to read about other history cases so that, maybe, I could find some answers.  Now that that “business” is done, I wanted you to know how much happiness you bring to all of us book lovers all across the globe (I’m a Venezuelan currently living in Spain). Thank you thank you thank you. Keep doing what you are doing! I love your podcast!  Much much much love from Madrid, -Andreina  5. First, I just want to say thank you so much for this podcast. It’s my absolute favorite, and I look forward to it every week (and am super happy that I now get to listen twice a week). I have read some truly amazing books thanks to you!   I have found historical fiction cozy mysteries to be especially comforting in these wild times. I love to read mysteries that have a strong female main character and are written by women. The only problem is that almost every historical fiction series that I’ve read has white main characters and are almost all written by white authors. Do you have any recommendations for own voices historical cozy mysteries by BIPOC women?  Some historical mystery series that I have enjoyed are: The Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas The Perveen Mistry series by Sujata Massey The Veronica Speedwell and Lady Julia Grey series by Deanna Raybourn The Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters The Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear The Sparks & Bainbridge series by Allison Montclair The Jane Prescott series by Mariah Fredericks The High Society Lady Detective Books by Sara Rosett The Lady Hardcastle Mysteries by T.E. Kinsey The Kendra Donovan series by Julie McElwain The Countess of Harleigh Mysteries by Dianne Freeman The Rose Gallagher Mysteries by Erin Lindsey Kitty Weeks Series by Radha Vatsal Some contemporary mysteries series by women of color that I’ve started reading are the Jaya Jones series by Gigi Pandian, An Ice Cream Parlor Mystery by Abby Collete, and the Noodle Shop Mysteries by Vivien Chien. I loved Death by Dumpling. I didn’t love Jaya Jones as much as I thought I would because I couldn’t stand how much they talked about how skinny and petite she is. I liked A Deadly Inside Scoop but felt like the main character seemed very young. -Marissa 6. I’m loving dark academia media right now, which is an aesthetic that joins dark themes, such as murder, theft, and sin, with academic settings. I read The Secret History, by Donna Tartt, in February, and have not stopped thinking about it since. I have also read The Goldfinch, by the same author, and The Picture of Dorian Gray, and loved both of them tremendously. Dead Poets Society and Kill Your Darlings are examples of movies with this setting. Could you help me find other books with a similar style? -Maria 7. Hi! Thanks for your podcast; I love it. I wonder if you can help me. I have a 7-year-old and I’m looking for a book to read aloud together as a family. We loved Thomas Taylor’s Malamander and the sequel, and we are looking for books like those–thrilling, sly, dark, funny, suspenseful middle-grade fantasies with lots of friendship and at least one girl MC. We don’t like to slog through pointless dialogue and tedious set-up. (Also, no racism, sexism, or homo-/transphobia, please–I like reading J.K. Rowling, Neil Gaiman, Eva Ibbotson, Chris Riddell, and Roald Dahl because they are so funny, but also they can STFU with their dumb jokes about Asia, queer-coded villains, and sidelined heroines.) My kid has enjoyed audiobooks of the Unicorn Rescue Society, Love Sugar Magic, Princess Pulverizer, Alice in Wonderland, Anna Hibiscus, Wollstonecraft Detective Agency, Magic Treehouse, Dory Fantasmagory, Dragons in a Bag, and Questioneers series, as well as the first Dark is Rising book. She heard the Audible sample of Akata Witch and was mesmerized (so was I) but I think it’s a little too old for her. Some violence is fine, but we’d like to stay away from heavy romance/crushes/bullying (middle-school stuff), and from really dark stuff like genocide, horrible forms of murder, any hint of sexual violence or suicide, etc. POC and queer characters a plus. Thank you so much! Best, -Mo Books Discussed Five Little Indians by Michelle Good (tw: racism, child abuse) Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth (tw: self harm, fatal overdose, torture, gore) Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff Lady Killer by Joelle Jones, Jamie S. Amanda and Jenn discuss independent ladies, fantasy short stories, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel reading comps, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton and The Birthday Girl by Sue Fortin.   Questions 1. Hi ladies! I recently finished reading Red Clocks by Leni Zumas, and I really, really loved and related to Ro (the biographer) and Gin's (the mender) independence. They didn't have current romantic/life partners, and they weren't agonizing over being alone or over trying to find someone. I am getting sick of novels where women spend a lot of time worrying about being "on the shelf." I would like to read more books with women who are single and proud, and romance isn't anywhere near the top of their priority list. I am willing to read any genre, length, or format. Can't wait to hear what you have to recommend! Thanks so much! Best, --Mary Beth   2. Hi! My friend and coworker is transferring to a new position within our company to Phoenix, Arizona. She will be driving from Ohio to Phoenix with whatever she can fit into her car. While working together I introduced her to audiobooks, and I thought a list of great audiobook recommendations would be the perfect parting gift. She loves steamy romance novels, and a great male narrator's voice. I know that she has listened to all of Meghan March's books, Anna Todd, and has just recently discovered the Fifty Shades of Grey series. Hoping to make her long drive enjoyable. Thanks so much! I greatly enjoy your show! --Kristin   3. Hello! I'm a first year 7th grade English at a school in Massachusetts, and we are about to start a unit of fantasy short stories. I'm very excited about this unit, but after looking through the anthology that we'll be using, I've noticed something that I want to change - the anthology only contains one story by an author of color ("Caleb's Colors" by Neal Shusterman). I'd love to teach a more diverse set of stories, so I'm looking for suggestions of fantasy short stories that would be appropriate for a middle school reading level. Do you know of any anthologies that exist? I would also be happy to read them a picture book or two. Please let me know if you can help me diversify my reading list! --Jessi   4. I'm about six weeks away from giving birth to my first child, and I'm looking for something to read that will be a real page-turner but light enough that I can read it during my leave regardless of how much (or little) sleep I'm getting. I read pretty widely in terms of genre, but I do prefer fiction to non-fiction and I don't really do suspense or thrillers. Thanks! --Aaryn   5. Love love love your show. I’ve just moved from a very queer loving and welcoming college campus to a not so much welcoming and loving work environment :(. I’m on a desperate search for stories with badass lesbian and queer women protagonists to dive into to remind myself my gay poc identity is valid and wonderful and loved on those tough work days. I just finished Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Riviera and absolutely loved and dying for another woke read with a confident lesbian/gay/queer woman in her 20s being a total badass and rocking who they are through whatever life throws at them. Here’s my search criteria: - coming out not being a major plot point. - Not YA. Characters in their 20s like me or 30s would be preferable. - Light, fun & empowering with some humor thrown in - contemporary - not a mystery, thriller, or including issues of domestic violence, or sexual assault. - a person of color protagonist would be awesome but I understand this list might be a tall order so am lenient in this category I’m new to romance but very much open to it and am not shy about sex scenes. Open to non-fiction of all kinds, and some light fantasy and sci-fi. Books I’ve loved the feel of Sourdough by Robin Sloan’s themes of figuring out adulthood, and what one wants to do with their life. River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow by Sarah Gailey. I Hear She’s a Real Bitch by Jen Agg Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit made my cry - not in a good way with the having to go back into the closet kind of thing so I’d love to stay way clear of anything like that. Thanks! I hope you can help! Sincerely, --Courtney   6. Hi ladies! I just blew through the charming new Amazon Prime original TV series "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and am really thirsting for more content like it. If you haven't had the pleasure, it's about a well-to-do house wife in the late 1950s in Manhattan who discovers her incredible talent for raunchy standup comedy as her life is falling apart around her. It's sharp, witty, smart, and has a good dose of drama. It's by the same folks as Gilmore Girls and is tonally very similar. The main character also reminds me of Joan Rivers a lot. I'd love to read some books that put me in the same mind-space while I wait (a year) for season two, but I'm not sure where to start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Best, --Jocelyn   7. Don't judge but one of my favorite movies is The Mummy (the one with Brendan Fraser) and years ago I was swept away by the Anton Rider series by Bartle Bull which is similar in tone to The Mummy. I've been having a hard time finding other books that give me a similar feeling. Any recommendations for books that have adventure, maybe a monster, a rogueish hero and some romance? --Emily   Books Discussed Eloquent Rage by Brittney Cooper Make Trouble by Cecile Richards 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff All Grown Up by Jami Attenberg A Scot in the Dark by Sarah MacLean Destiny’s Captive by Beverly Jenkins (rec'd by Jess Pryde) Unnatural Creatures edited by Neil Gaiman and Maria Dahvana Headley A Thousand Beginnings and Endings edited by Ellen Oh and Elsie Chapman (out June 26 2018) Fresh Ink edited by Lamar Giles I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You by Courtney Maum The Paper Menagerie: Stories by Ken Liu Nevada by Imogen Binnie Holding Still for As Long As Possible by Zoe Whitall Lady Killer by Joelle Jones and Jamie S. Episode 119 - Reviews of Harvey Kurtzman's Jungle Book, Generous Bosom, Part One, and Lady Killer #1

The Comics Alternative

This week the Two Guys discuss three very different new titles. First, they look at Harvey Kurtzman's Jungle Book, another collaboration between Dark Horse Books and Kitchen Sink Books (an earlier such publication, The Best of Comix Book, was discussed last may). What's more, this is the first volume in the publishers' new Essential Kurtzman library. Andy and Derek begin by mentioning that neither of them had read Jungle Book before, although it has been on both of their radars, so they come to this volume as new contemporary readers. And that's one of the first things the guys discuss: the datedness of the stories. Originally published in 1959, Jungle Book comprises four shorter pieces, and in about all of them Kurtzman has embedded cultural references specific to the times. This is not necessarily an obstacle to enjoying the text, but both Derek and Andy appreciated this volume more as a cultural and historical artifact than they did a cohesive work of comics art. Kurtzman's original stories are accompanied by short supplemental material by the likes of Gilbert Shelton, Art Spiegelman, Peter Poplaski, Robert Crumb, and Denis Kitchen. Indeed, it is latter's essay that provides the necessary context, and the guys note that Kitchen's contribution is one of the highlights of this volume. Next they return to a creator that they discussed last summer, Conor Stechschulte, and his new book, Generous Bosom, Part One (Breakdown Press). This is a fascinating title that, while the first installment of a multipart narrative, easily stands on its own. Derek and Andy comment on the apparent raciness of comic, but they quickly point out that this is a much more sophisticated story than the title would suggest. The book has its share of sexual references (explicit at times), but it is a complex narrative that takes unexpected turns. Most impressive is Stechschulte's method of storytelling and the ways he uses his art to establish the interlocking narrative levels. Finally, the guys discuss Joëlle Jones and Jamie S. Rich's Lady Killer #1, the first in a five-part miniseries. What drew them to this title is Jones's art, which they really enjoyed when they discussed Helheim back in 2013. Now Jones has turned to scripting, on which she collaborates with Rich, and this first issue does a good job of establishing the miniseries' premise: a 1950s/60s hitwoman masquerading as an innocuous housewife. But while the story is interesting, it is Jones's art that really captures the guys' interest. Although they may wait for the trade in reading the rest of the story -- they have some issues with the first issue's pacing -- this is nonetheless a title worth checking out.
