Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship
This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Jeff Lieber. Jeff is the founder of Turnkey Product Management, a boutique Amazon consulting firm, which helps brands at every level sell their products on Amazon. Jeff started by selling his own products on Amazon and identified the fundamental strategies to help sellers to stand out among the competition and see their full potential on Amazon. TurnKey offers everything from Full-Service Amazon Account Management to Consulting to Amazon Ad Management. He's been so successful that he's been asked to work with some of Mark Cuban's Shark Tank portfolio of companies and has helped clients go from $0 to $100k+ in one month in sales. His secret had been mastering Amazon's pay-per-click advertising, key word research and optimization, listing optimization, and other areas that when put together give him and his clients a big advantage. Amazon is one of the most accessible places to start or grow as an entrepreneur and I've asked Jeff to come on and share his secrets with you. www.TurnkeyProductManagment.com/Resources Jeff graduated college in 201o and got a job at a health care company in San Francisco. But, he had always been interested in entrepreneurship and been on the lists for some of the top internet marketers. In 2014, he saw an opportunity for Amazon where people where sourcing and launching their own products. That model made sense in that he could source a product and create a brand around it. He decided to take a leap and do it on the side. He started with “puppy training pads” of all things. He paid the bulk of his life savings for a container of it, $15000. He started out slowly but got better at marketing and soon had success. He then launched other products and after about a year, he had replaced his income and decided to focus on it full time. A friend of his launched a product on Kickstarter that did well but were not having success on Amazon. They tapped Jeff to help, and he doubled their sales pretty quickly which led to more referrals and helped him build a consulting practice. He got overwhelmed and was stressed to the max. He decided to sell off the businesses and keep just Turnkey and focus on that, which he did. Because he could focus, it really took off. What does it take to become a successful Amazon seller and what are some of the best practices on how to do it well such as product sourcing and branding? The people that build brands around something really care about and are passionate about and working to bring something unique to the market, do well. Those that chase trends and hop around all time, don't do as well. You need to be passionate about creating awesome products and brands. At the 11 min mark, Jeff gives an example of a client selling CrossFit products well. On the sourcing side, it depends on what your product is. Supplements for example are a huge market with a lot of niches – but that is not something you would source from China. You would want to get the products from the U.S. You can google suppliers for the products you want and find lists of suppliers. There are product sourcing consultants that can help you and do a lot of the work for you and negotiate on your behalf. Get as many quotes are you can, at least 5 suppliers and remember, it is all negotiable. Alibaba.com is great place to find suppliers for any product you want to source. You should request and check samples to make sure the quality is good. There will be winning suppliers that standout. Once you've picked one, then get the smallest minimum order you can negotiate to test with. Then use Amazon FBA by shipping the product to the warehouse. You are then in stock and can sell. Branding Tips You can have the best product in the world, but people can't touch or feel it when shopping on Amazon. You need to create that experience for them on your Amazon product page. You have about 1 minute to convince a buyer to buy your product. An optimized page does this. #1 is amazing, professional photos for your products. Invest in this. #2 is customer reviews. Reviews are king on Amazon, so you need to plan on getting to at least 10 reviews as fast as possible. Get creative. #3 is having a real good title and sales copy. When you search on Amazon, all you see if the title, image, and price – so title is critical. Make sure to use all real estate available to you. Share a case study of how you doubled sales with a client… A newer brand that was back by a former NBA player. They had done the work to make a good product and had gotten a number of pro-athletes to represent it. But, it wasn't a popular product at the time. They hardly had an Amazon page. It wasn't unique and didn't showcase the product well. Jeff and his team optimized the page and listing and focused on the strengths of the client. They went through #1-#3 above and made sure they checked every box. Any other tips? Once you have products listed and optimized and gotten reviews, it's time to turn on Amazon PPC advertising. Most search results are ads. They don't look like it because Amazon hides it well. Amazon is 3rd largest advertiser in the world now. The fast way to get visitors to your page is to run well-designed Amazon PPC campaigns and you can go very targeted and detailed. Start with a small amount and grow it over time. You need to do this and if needed, find an expert. Any niches you see that are up and coming? The health space is very big – diets like Keto, Gluten Free and others are gaining popularity. People are niching down to the submarkets under these. Make sure you don't just chase a trend; you need to be passionate about it. There are tools to assess potential for products on Amazon At the 34 min mark, Jeff explains this in more detail. Anything else people should know about selling on Amazon? It's an amazing place to be. Amazon could be your best sales channel. Don't treat it lightly and just throw up a listing. Amazon gives a snowball effect where it compounds over time and can grow to a 7-figure business within a few years. What surprised you most on your entrepreneur journey? The roller coaster and how extreme it can be. The challenges, the mess ups, and mistakes. It's on you at the end of the day and you run into things you never expected. But that is balanced by the freedom you get and the great things that happen. Best advice for entrepreneur's starting out today? Thing carefully and take your time to pick the right one. Don't chase something just for the money. Make sure you will be happy with what you are doing. Best Quote: You can have the best product in the world, but people can't touch or feel it when shopping on Amazon. You need to create that experience for them on your Amazon product page. Jeff's Misfit 3: Life is short. We never know when it could be over, and it is precious. Make sure to enjoy each day. Meditate and take time to change your expectations to equal your circumstances around you. Realize how good you have it. Take a risk on what you want in life. It's worth it. He’s here to share that framework and chat about all the changes Amazon has seen. Jeff has spent the last several years creating Amazon strategies that scale businesses on Amazon. He takes your products and listings and helps you to tweak and promote so that you sell more than ever. He’s open, honest, and ready to help you grow your Amazon business. One of the big new things for Amazon is video. Still so many people are not using video to promote their brands, stores, and products… but you should. Jeff and I dig deep into the why behind using video for your promotion and how you can do it on a budget. Listen in to learn all about Jeff’s 5-step framework and why it works. Don’t forget… always keep testing. No one strategy is going to work forever. Amazon changes constantly, so having someone in your corner who keeps up with those changes and knows how to shift is very valuable. This was an amazing conversation and I can’t wait to have Jeff back on the show. Overview of Amazon Storefront Source Tags You can add to any store page URL when using it as the landing page for your advertising and marketing activities. When a customer visits your store using a URL that contains the tag, we automatically detect the tag is in the URL and attribute the visit and any resulting metrics to that tag. There is no limit to how many tags you can create, and tags do not expire. We can use this for all external strategies, that way we don't have to limit it to just one product URL Where to find it? To find Storefront Source Tags, go to Amazon Seller Central, Stores, Manage Stores, See Insights, Create Source Tag. From there, you can choose the Destination Page, and then put a clear Tag name that will help you identify such as "Facebook Ad For Yoga Mat", then it will provide you your custom link to use for that campaign! Episode 55 of the Serious Sellers Podcast hosts Jeff Lieber, who gives expert advice on using Amazon video ads and giveaways in your product launches
Cap.Com contributor Jeff Lieber from TurnKey Management returns for a quick talk on videos that work. Are you planning to add video to your assets? This episode is for you. Visit Capitalism.com/AmazonClass for a free training. Key Takeaways Video is everywhere! [2:33] So much so that it's become a vital part of how products are sold on the web. Jeff shares 3 different types of videos for 3 different types of budgets. DIY [4:27] The only thing you really need for this kind of video is a phone. Remember to focus on the product and the message: 1. Film you product in your hands or being used. 2. Talk through your product story. 3. Call to action - be very specific. Slideshows [7:13] What you need here is your product images and Amazon doesn't have as many restrictions for videos as for photos, so let loose here and go for your best action shots. You can do the Slideshow video in 1 of 2 ways: 1. DIY a. Find an online video or slideshow presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc.) b. Incorporate written words or a transcript, and do a voice over. 2. Professional a. Look for a professional online (Fiverr, Upwork, etc.) triple bid the offers so you can choose. b. Examine their portfolios and ask for advice, they know their job and can give you creative advice. c. Turnkey has recommendations if you want to contact them. Hire experts [13:31] This option can get more expensive and takes longer to complete, but here are Jeff's tips for commercial videos: 1. Have a clear idea of what you want filmed and how (shot list). 2. Ask for some creative input, you may be surprised at the ideas you get. 3. Write out all of the scripted narration. 4. Vet out your video editor. 5. Triple bid your options. Which one is for me? [22:05] If you have no video, start quickly now and do a DIY - even if you have the budget for a commercial video: the process takes a lot longer. Any video is better than no video. Thanks for listening! Keep in touch Max@brandbuilderstrategy.com
Today, Jeff Lieber of Turnkey Management interviews Kevin Liang, the 26 year old Founder and CEO of ADI Ventures, the company behind EcoQube and EcoQube Air as well as the CEO of AspeneowBox. EcoQube is a self contained aquaponics aquarium system which built a 125k person email list off of 2 kickstarter campaigns that both wildly outperformed (37 times higher!) their minimal goal. If you ever thought it would be nice to leverage product launches to grow your audience, Kevin is the man to listen to for tips and trick. Key Takeaways [1:33] Jeff introduces his guest and today's discussion topics and gives him the mic to explain how he got started with such a complex product design and how exactly the EcoQube works. Kickstarting [7:35] Kevin's venture into kickstarter began with studying. He read everything he could and studied everything he could in order to control as many variables as possible. His first campaign was set at 39k and closed at 80k. His second campaign — having learned from the first iteration — was set at 10k and quickly reached 375k. Who is this for? [13:39] Crowdfunding is the way of the future. If you have a new or innovative product — not sourced off of Alibaba — crowdfunding derisks the whole enterprise and provides you with immediate customer acceptance data and an audience before the product even launches. Building an audience [16:00] Kevin breaks down how he built his email lists — it started with downloading his personal contacts because let's face it, if you can't convince your own email list to support you, it's going to be hard to drive cold traffic to your kickstarter. The second campaign was through Facebook advertising for giveaway campaigns. Tip: emphasize on a discount on your product as opposed to a giveaway: it might attract the wrong audience when you're building your list. After crowdfunding [21:58] Kevin had gotten good enough at driving cold traffic and redirecting it however, the conversion rates are lower off of crowdfunding campaigns! After watching Ryan Moran's “0 to 1 million dollars in 12 months” YouTube video, he made the move to Amazon. In 2016, Kevin then became Turnkey Product Management's fourth client ever! Pain points [24:24] Kevin touches on where Turnkey's team was able to help streamline and offer their experience to grow EcoQube. Building a team [26:34] Kevin shares his super succesful hiring process: For every position, Kevin aims for 100 to 150 applications. 1. The listing asks that the candidates write an email to a generic address containing 10 reasons why they're awesome — no resume, nothing — this weeds out resume spammers and people that are not detail oriented! 2. The auto responder will then provide 10 interview questions and ask for the resume. 3. After that there is a 1 hour info session for about 21 to 28 of the applicants. 4. The 28 are pared down to a dozen who are paid to do a test project similar to the job they are applying for which showcase their problem solving abilities. 5. From that dozen, 5 or 6 are called for a final phone interview. So from 150 to 5 or less without spending more than a few hours on info sessions! Superconnector [37:38] At any event you are in, there is no need to feel pressure to talk to anyone and everyone, just find one person to have an interesting conversation with — the trick is finding that person. Remember to keep in touch at small moments: Happy Thanksgiving! Life hacking [41:09] making a 1% improvement every day creates a compounding effect. [42:21] Jeff thanks Kevin for coming on the podcast, as well as where listeners can get in touch with him. Jeff then shares his takeaways from the show. Thanks for listening! Today's episode is the Playbook for Amazon podcast! Jeff Lieber from Turnkey Product Management welcomes listeners to the show that is dedicated to helping you amp up your Amazon game. TurnkeyProduct Management sells 8 figures per year on Amazon for it's clients, if you're looking for actionable tips, lessons and mistakes to avoid in your own business, you've come to the right place. Key Takeaways [2:19] Jeff launches the podcast by sharing where he is from and how it led him to where he is today. [4:48] Launching physical products on Amazon was one of the many business models Jeff studies, and the one he adopted — he began his online marketing career with pet products. Mistake: Ordering 15k worth of pee pads — a full container of goods! Lesson: If you are just launching a new product line, you can do test orders or air ship a couple of boxes. [7:07] Jeff's forays outside of the pet niches — hot fads which ended up fading… Mistake: Not building a company or a customer list. Lesson: Don't chase trends, focus on your core business first. [8:09] How did he decide to go all in? Tim Ferris' fear setting exercise for making big decisions: 1. Write down and flesh out what your biggest fear look like — what is the worst possible scenario. 2. Write down the best or even the average scenario. Decide if you are willing to live with the worst case and if the bst case is worth the risk! [12:04] From jumping into his own company to being asked by friends to help them establish their business on Amazon, Jeff explains how he began consulting and how Turnkey started (they're still a client today!) Lesson: Sometimes the best businesses don't start out as an idea to fill a niche but evolve from a natural need in the marketplace and often times from saying yes and being of service to someone else! [15:10] Once you have a little bit of success, be careful of shiny shiny distractions (often under the guise of income diversification). Mistake: launching too many companies! Lesson: it's very very difficult to manage many companies! And they end up all growing at an equally crappy rate. Jeff Hoffman (PriceLine) once said: “I only did one thing at a time — don't try to get a gold medal in 6 different events”. [16:43] Chose the one thing you like doing the most, for Jeff it was Turnkey — not pet products. Lesson: Do what you are most passionate about! And work with other people that are passionate and complementary to you, you will multiply returns. Today, the mysterious Jeff Lieber joins Ryan and Max for an insightful interview covering the reasons why big brand tend not to be on Amazon as much (and why they should be) as well as a host of tips and important advice on expanding your business on Amazon. Jeff is the Founder and CEO of Turnkey Product Management, a company offering a full portfolio of management options for automating your Amazon growth while freeing up capacity for you to work on your business. Jeff also built and sold a few physical products brand himself and receives Ryan's highest endorsement. Why should you be on Amazon, even if your brand is doing great on its own channels? Key Takeaways [1:54] Ryan starts by roping Max into a question about his initial shock with Amazon product sellers: he was struck by how far you can grow on Amazon by just focusing on product sales, and how inversely low performance seemed to be. [3:10] How can companies use Amazon in a way that builds their brand rather than just focussing on product sales? If your brand is successful through your own channels, you will benefit from bringing the branding and messaging to Amazon: make it a place for your existing customers to recognise you, and a way for new eyes to find you. At the end of the day, having a diversity of sales channels will always make your company more valuable. [5:07] Amazon used to be a low price, low margin product dumping ground and a lot of physical product sellers still treat it like that. But it's still the largest pool of online hungry buyers looking for products just like yours. If you're not there, you're missing out. [8:23] What can product sellers and brands do on Amazon in order to keep their margins high and avoid falling into the low price point race to the bottom? Differentiate yourself, stay premium, pride yourself on quality and great customer reviews: live up to and keep earning your price point! [9:57] Price, at the end of the day, comes down to your ability to fulfill the promise your brand makes. A better, stronger brand will command a higher price. [11:41] Jeff shares that his more successful clients are always great at one or more of the following: 1. Audience building 2. Paid advertising 3. Innovate [15:38] Bigger brands are notoriously off Amazon, and the reasons may simply be because they have more control over their proprietary channels. If that is the case you may simply need to shift your thinking: Amazon is the largest marketplace in the world, it should be one of your sales channels for 2 reasons: 1. Make it easier for your existing customers to have access to your products. 2. Meet new customers. [20:49] Jeff built his own pet brand on Amazon — still the best place to launch a brand — and to day he firmly believes that having multiple sales channels is what ensured his business' success. [24:53] The biggest impact you will have from an Amazon presence is that customers that see you elsewhere will look you up on Amazon and immediately become a customer because the process for them is much easier. But for that to happen you need to streamline your page by optimizing your bullets, your copy, your headlines, etc. Max gets tactical — this is the one biggest missed opportunity he sees — and advises that your listing images should tell a cohesive story that includes the brand and taglines or a promise statement that can be consistent across products. [29:06] Jeff's biggest forward pushing items for growth: - Launching new products - Building (and using) your customer list - Nurture 1 or 2 off-Amazon channels [32:07] Ryan turns the floor over to Jeff to talk a bit more about Turnkey Product Management and he invites listeners to visit turnkeyproductmanagement.com/ryanmoran for some exclusive content. Writer/producer Jeff Lieber (Necessary Roughness, NCIS: New Orleans) joins me to explore the intersection between music and drama, and how he uses an obsession with an album to fuel his writing process. We talk about how Gregory Alan Isakov's 'The Weatherman' has been the soundtrack to his current writing project, the different ways that changing technology has effected TV and music, what the Beatles have in common with the Sopranos, why he has failed multiple times to write song lyrics, the secrets to using songs in episodes of TV drama and why he sometimes envies indie musicians - and sometimes doesn't. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos.
