South Korea has long relied on the United States for deterrence against its nuclear-armed neighbor, North Korea. But since his reelection, U.S. President Donald Trump has raised questions about Washington's core commitments around the world. He and members of his cabinet have suggested Washington might withdraw from the Korean Peninsula altogether, or make Seoul pay billions for the defense the U.S. provides, including a nuclear umbrella against Pyongyang. As a result, a majority of Koreans now want the country to develop its own nuclear arsenal. This week on Counterpoint, we tackle the question: Should South Korea develop nuclear weapons? Arguing in favor is Jennifer Lind, an associate professor of government at Dartmouth College and the author of the forthcoming book, Autocracy 2.0: How China's Rise Reinvented Tyranny. Making the case against Seoul developing its own nuclear weapons is Lami Kim, a professor at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu and the former director of the Asian studies program at the U.S. Army War College. Counterpoint is a production of Foreign Policy, in partnership with the Doha Forum. The show is hosted by Sasha Polakow-Suransky. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Episode Highlights: Introducing Jennifer Lind, Regional President at Coldwell Banker Jennifer's Impressive Career Journey: Agent, Manager, Owner, Executive The Current Market: Why It's a "Level Up Moment" The Trifecta for Success: Mindset, Skillset, and Action Cultivating a Winning Mindset: Intention, Consumption, and Association Leadership Insights: Leading Through Change vs. Managing Change The Power of Clarity: Knowing Who You Are For (and Who You're Not) Strategies for Building Agent Engagement and Office Culture Industry Evolution: What's Changed and What Remains Constant Since 2003 The Future of Real Estate: Predictions for the Next Five Years Jennifer's Career Growth: Leaning In, Making an Impact, and Staying Connected The Connection Between Momentum and Morale Key Takeaways: "I don't think there's anything we can do in this business that creates any success without mindset." "...managing your mindset is pretty tough... what you consume and who you're around and where you spend your time and where you spend your energy... those all really feed into that." "...this is a level up moment. There's an opportunity." "...whoever is successful right now, it is because they have found a way to get much, much better at the job that they were already good at." "Leading through change is very different than managing the change that's coming to you." "...nobody likes change, but everybody loves innovation." "...if you don't have a good strategy on what change you're going to navigate moving forward, someone will come up with something for you that you may not love." "I personally don't care how many names are on our roster. I want to know that we have the best names on our roster." "There's a lot of strength and a lot of power in clarity." "Agents don't come into the office to do their work. They come in for something much more meaningful... engagement and that connection, that collaboration..." "...wanting to connect and delight and create an emotional connection with your clients... that hasn't changed." "It's about being in the people's lives... when you're in a market like we are, where it's life events..." "...moving forward, this isn't just like a hobby industry. I think there's too much on the line for it to be that moving forward." "[The industry] will get more refined and more sophisticated, which again, I think is great." "...helping [clients] leverage [options]... great news is we're in a market where people have equity and they've got options." "Momentum and morale are very closely connected. You cannot have one without the other..." Jennifer Lind, Associate Professor at Dartmouth College, argues that China's rise now means the world is back to a bipolar balance of power. She provides insight into how U.S. foreign policy should manage this new reality and discusses why polarity is important, how to measure the balance of power, how stable unipolar, bipolar, and multipolar systems are, the major points of conflict between the US and China, and what to do about Taiwan, among other topics. Chris, Zack, and Melanie get together to discuss Ashley Tellis's newest article, “America's Bad Bet on India.” Tellis argues that if America thinks India will fight on its side in a conflict with China, “Washington's expectations of India are misplaced….New Delhi will never involve itself in any U.S. confrontation with Beijing that does not directly threaten its own security.” Should the United States expect the world's largest democracy to come to its aid if there is a conflict with China over Taiwan? What does New Delhi want out of its relationship with Washington? Will India's democratic backsliding affect its relationship with the United States? Chris has a shoutout for Dr. Jennifer Lind for an article well done, Zack has complaints about the overreaction to news of Cuba possibly hosting a Chinese spy base, and Melanie congratulates War on the Rocks friend Will Inboden on his new post.

What is the best way to preserve the liberal international order (such as it is) going forward? Some counsel conservatism. Jennifer Lind and William Wohlforth argue that “the United States and its partners should consolidate the gains the order has reaped,” back away from democracy promotion, and resist the urge to add new members to existing alliances, especially those countries that bring more liabilities than capabilities. Are they right? Must the United States practice more discernment (Bryan’s word) or restraint (Chris’s), or does the order still depend upon American military primacy? Would it collapse or atrophy if the United States were less likely to employ force in the service of certain desirable, but non-essential, ends? Or would democracy and human rights flourish if promoted chiefly by the power of America's example, and carried forward by non-governmental organizations, as opposed to entities of the U.S. government? Also, Chris remembers Rep. Walter Jones, Melanie praises California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and, in a first, Germany earns both a grievance and (minor) attaboy in the same show. In 2015 Japan passed landmark reforms of its national security laws, including a reinterpretation of its constitutional prohibition against collective security activities. Now Japan can legally cooperate with the United States in defensive military operations, leading many observers to declare that Japan has abandoned its post–World War II “pacifist principles.”Are such pronouncements correct? Or are the national security reforms simply the most recent recalibration of Japan’s postwar grand strategy? In her new analysis, Jennifer Lind argues the latter, stating that cries of “Japan is abandoning pacifism” are not only misleading, but distort the magnitude of recent changes. According to Lind, while Japan prefers to buck-pass to the United States, it has historically accepted more responsibility in the alliance when its threat environment grows increasingly dangerous and uncertainty exists about the U.S. commitment. But what are the implications for U.S. security of a more assertive Japan? And does Japan’s acceptance of more responsibility suggest that other U.S. allies would act accordingly if Washington were to step back? Lind along with a distinguished panel will discuss these and other important questions. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
