They check in with two former Canadian Internationals, each with 40+ caps for the national team, to get their thoughts on what they've seen, how far the program has come and just what the ceiling is for them at the 2026 World Cup. First up, the boys check in with David Edgar, current assistant coach at Forge FC in the CPL. David talks about how great it is to see a lot of excitement and support locally for soccer these days in Canada, the importance of having a global superstar like Alphonso Davies and other players playing abroad, along with the benefits of a strong domestic league like the CPL to help develop national team members. He also talks about the best use for Canada's best players including Davies and Jonathan David, along with the need for more help upfront. The morning duo also discuss with both guests how much Saturday's third place game mean to both the players and the program; how it could start to inspire and push a younger generation into soccer in this country. We're back with our first show of 2022 and what better way to kick off the new year than with another packed episode of the AFTN Soccer Show and another of our end of season reviews, this time turning our attention to the stellar year that was had by the Canadian men's national team. Canada started the year 72nd in the world in the FIFA rankings and they finished it in 40th, their joint highest ever which they also reached in December 1996. The national team played 19 matches last year. All of them competitive games, with not a friendly in site. Crazy really considering how little they've played in some recent years. There were 14 World Cup qualifiers and 5 Gold Cup matches, producing 13 wins, 4 draws, and just 2 defeats, both of those coming at the hands of traditional CONCACAF powerhouses of the US and Mexico and both of those came at the Gold Cup. Canada scored 55 goals, conceding just 11, with 16 different goalscorers. 2021 was a great year, but hopefully it's just the start of even bigger and better things for Canada. We delve into all of that and a lot more, plus we chat with CPL coaches Bobby Smyrniotis, Tommy Wheeldon Jr, and Jim Brennan to look at how the success of the national team has driven an excitement locally for the CPL teams.

The latest AFTN Soccer Show is out for another packed show of Vancouver Whitecaps, MLS, Canadian Premier League, and Canadian national team chat. What a fantastic feast of football, and indeed sport, was served up this weekend. And most of it gives us a lot of positives to chat about this week. We start off in MLS with the Whitecaps. They may have given up a two goal lead, but there were a lot of positives to be taken and foundations laid from their draw at LAFC. We look back at the highs, the lows, and the main talking points coming out of the match, hear from head coaches Marc Dos Santos and Bob Bradley, and round up the weekend's action in MLS. The Whitecaps have now headed back to Vancouver for the first time since March, and while they won't be playing home games here until August 21st, they can at least train and be in their own surroundings. We look at their return, the boost it's given the team, and hear the thoughts of MDS, Russell Teibert, and Brian White on finally getting back to Canada. Moving onto the international stage, the 2021 Gold Cup is at the semi-final stage and Canada are there to battle it out for a place in the final after their win over Costa Rica. We look back at that excellent quarter-final performance, hear from head coach John Herdman, and he and Max Crepeau share some thoughts about a wide open tournament. Heading back home to the Canadian Premier League, we look at where things stand for each team after the kickoff tournament event in Winnipeg wrapped up and bring you audio from each side featuring Valour FC's Rob Gale and Jonathan Sirois, Pacific FC's James Merriman, Cavalry FC's Tommy Wheeldon Jr, FC Edmonton's Alan Koch, Forge FC's Bobby Smyrniotis, York United's Jim Brennan, HFX Wanderers Mesut Mert and Alessandro Riggi, and Atletico Ottawa's Malcolm Shaw. StarTalk and Stitcher present our new podcast, “Playing with Science,” where we explore the science behind some of the most iconic, memorable moments in sports. Our new show is hosted by professional British soccer player and sports broadcaster Gary O’Reilly and Chuck Nice, voted “Fan Favorite StarTalk co-host” for the past two years. Our guests will include top professional athletes, sports experts, coaches, and pundits, and even everyone’s personal astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson. In this special “Episode Zero” teaser, you’ll hear Chuck and Gary describe the show, and then you’ll hear a segment from our episode about 1972’s Immaculate Reception, arguably the most famous play in the history of NFL football, where Franco Harris caught a deflected pass by Terry Bradshaw to score a touchdown, win the playoff game, and begin the infamous rivalry between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders that persists to this day. The episode features Chuck, Gary, guest physicist Eric Goff, who is the author of “Gold Medal Physics: The Science of Sports”, sports writer Jim Brennan, Neil deGrasse Tyson and NY Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Welcome to the show, and remember: “Playing with fire gets you burned, “Playing with Science” gets you learned.” New episodes will premiere Wednesday nights at 7 pm ET.
