The Defiant

In this week's episode I speak with Scoopy Trooples, founder of Alchemix, a protocol that programs self-paying loans without the risk of liquidations. Think about that; here's a DeFi application that promises to automatically pay users' collateralized loans, and on top of that, guarantee they won't be liquidated. Scoopy explains how something like that can work and it's all about plugging into other money legos like Yearn Finance to earn yield off that collateral and use that yield to pay off loans. Scoopy also goes into Alchemix v2 and into what he believes is a new movement in DeFi, which he helped coin as DeFi 2.0. Scoopy says dapps will now have options besides yield farming to attract liquidity to their protocols, which will allow teams to better control assets in their smart contracts, increasing capital efficiency. Thanking our sponsors: Balancer, one of the leading DeFi automated market makers (AMM) for multiple tokens. Dive into their pools here! At the age of twenty-three, Michael Brody-Waite was a full-blown drug addict. Every day he drank a fifth of vodka and a twelve pack of beer, he smoked two packs of cigarettes and more weed than any human should, and he did whatever other drugs he could get his hands on. He had been kicked out of college, fired from his job, and evicted from his apartment. He had no money and no home, was throwing up blood, and believed he would be dead before his thirtieth birthday. Then, on September 1, 2002, after running out of options and fearing death, he checked into rehab, entered recovery, and has been transforming himself every day since.  Today, Michael is on a mission to teach individuals, organizations, and communities how to lead themselves by living mask-free. In his personal time, he is focused on being the best husband, father, and recovering addict he can be.Welcome to Reco12.  We are an organization whose addictions include alcohol, drugs, lust and sex, food and gambling, just to name a few.  We come together from all places, faiths and backgrounds to learn the similarities of addiction and to gain tools and hope from others who are walking a similar path.  We invite recovering addicts with at least 1 year sobriety and who are actively working their recovery in their respective fellowships to share their experience, strength and hope on a live Zoom webinar, each Friday at 12:00 pm central time, for 20-25 minutes.  Then, we, the live audience, get the opportunity to ask questions of the speaker for another 20-25 minutes.  If you are hearing this meeting in recorded podcast form and would like to participate as a live audience member in the future, please go to www.reco12.com to learn more and submit your email address there to receive weekly invitations.  Reco12 is a self-supporting service and we appreciate your help in keeping us working our Step 12 in this manner.  We gratefully accept contributions to help cover the costs of the Zoom platform, podcast platform, web hosting, and administrative costs.  To contribute, you can go to https://www.reco12.com/support  or you can click the link to PayPal (https://www.paypal.me/reco12)  in the chat of the live meeting.  When you contribute, please specify the meeting number.  This is meeting number 59.References in this meeting:Michael talked about some Step 10 questions and a Step 7/Surrender Worksheet.  He has shared these with Reco12 and if you would like them sent to you, please send an email to reco12pod@gmail.com and request them.  I will get them back to you.  Michael's Book:  https://greatleaderbook.com/Mask Free Program:  https://michaelbrodywaite.com/login/Outro music is “Standing Still” by Cory Ellsworth and Randy Kartchner, performed by Mike Eldred and Elizabeth Wolfe.  This song, and/or the entire soundtrack for the future Broadway musical, “Crosses:  A Musical of Hope”, can be purchased here:  https://music.apple.com/us/album/crosses-musical-hope-by-cory/528476262  This song is used with the  permission of Cory Ellsworth.Support the show (https://www.reco12.com/support)

While the first person to tell you that nothing good happens while you're using drugs will be today's guest Michael Brody-Waite, he WILL insist that the skills he learned in recovery are the same skills we all need for success with life and money. He should know. As a man who's walked the journey from drug addict to CEO and success coach, Michael funnels his darkest experiences into powerful lessons he'll share with you. Today, Michael will teach you how to rebalance your priorities, reclaim your energy, and thrive in both work and life. A new bond has arrived! The Treasury announced a 20-year note to help offset the massive spending lately in Washington. We'll discuss how that works and may impact your wallet in our headlines segment. Also, we'll cover the results of a recent Morningstar study that shows why it is more important than you might thank to have a thorough financial plan and an (emotional) support network in place. It turns out that it's easy to stay the financial course when everything is going right. The problem is when panic starts to set in, not pressing that big, red "sell everything" button. Today we'll throw out the Haven Life line to a caller a not-quite-usual question about loan repayment. Due to COVID-19 reasons, Vanessa was laid off from work. However, she was building up her savings beforehand. Vanessa also receives unemployment and severance pay. She wonders, "Should I use savings to pay off student loans? Or, would it be better to keep making minimum payments and keep her cash buffer?" Of course, Joe and OG have an opinion. One last thing: Happy Twilight Zone Day! Doug has a special treat in store for you in celebration. Enjoy! (This is a rewind episode from the summer of 2020, so there will be references to events and days that aren't current. CW: Sexual violence against children Christopher Buckley of LaFayette, GA is an Afghanistan and Iraqi war veteran. When he returned from Iraq, he joined the Georgia White Knights as an Imperial Nighthawk, because their anti-Muslim and racist values were consistent with his worldview after returning from war. Arno Michaelis, a former white power skinhead, and Dr. Heval Mohamed Kelli, a Kurdish Muslim refugee, were able to teach Chris the error of his ways and helped bring him out of the movement. Today, he volunteers at The Haven in Georgia, a local organization that helps homeless and drug addicts. He also gives motivational speeches, trying to spread awareness and educate the public about the dangers of white supremacist extremism. Chris now works with Dr. Kelli on a program called Help, Heal, Love; where they work to repair flawed thinking in hate groups and spread a message of love and healing. He also created a deradicalization program designed specifically with veterans in mind but is geared to work with all manners of hate and extremist ideology. Chris shares with Rachel his intense and traumatic personal story, identifying key moments in his upbringing that ultimately led him down a dark and destructive path of addiction, racism, and violence. Together, he and Rachel examine the "cognitive bias" and as Chris explains the "cognitive openings" that can be a catalyst both into and out of extreme belief systems. In the second half of their conversation, Chris talks about his journey towards healing through sobriety and deradicalization. He also tells us about the life-saving redemption initiated by his wife that led to him working with Arno Michaelis and Parents for Peace and the meaning he has found in helping others overcome their extremist ideologies. Before You Go: Rachel examines the vulnerabilities and sequence of events that can lead to indoctrination and radicalization, and how behaviors commonly seen in addiction are mirrored in extremist ideology For More Info on Parents for Peace, visit: https://www.parents4peace.org/ If you are worried about extremism, you can call their helpline at 1-844-49-PEACE For more info on Arno Michaelis visit: https://www.theforgivenessproject.com/stories/arno-michaels/ Thanks to our newest Patrons: Sabine Breiholz, Renee M Williams, Nicholas Herrera, and Felicity Kusinitz!! Not surrendering to the outcome Michael’s TEDx Nashville YouTube video “Great Leaders Do What Drug Addicts Do” is stunning. Sence & Doug Welcome their first guest to the show. Guitarist/Artist Gery Klappert. Gery goes way back with Alex Blue on drums/vocals with Azur while pondering the idea of starting a group from the ground up as ultimately preferable to joining someone else's band. Ensembles without bassists are debated as well and Gery's guitar centric mindset mined mainly through the power of Jimi Hendrix realized. Age differences and generations dealt with. Spoiler alert. Gery K. born in 1988, Soundsational in 1974 and Death Metal in 1968 making him the resident old fart of the crew. We find out Gen X has four years pre Death and four years post Sound. "Groovy" as they say. DMD unwittingly showboats a friendship with Brent Hinds of Mastadon. Fishing for ratings he exploits any situation thrown his way so watch out, snookums! The spiel moves toward Toxic Masculinity rearing its beautiful head once again in an obscure name choice by SNS "The Phallic Principle" and the process of picking a moniker that is imaginative enough to avoid another prissy, pissy pants group and their pesky attorneys composing the letter nasty. And speaking of nasty Alex gets off performing near strip club Scarlet's with neighbors and happy endings. One could wager he's in tha dog house as he gets home. Addiction and genuine sickness are acknowledged. "The worst drug. Musicians buying gear is like a drug! There is no rehab for it." Gery describes a Motorhead covers w/ Mudknuckles (feat. Ray of Load on lead vocals) at Churchills and having 3 days to learn the set. All this with his wife in the hospital! Talk about pressure. Sence describes a "he who shall not be named" circumstance as subject matter devolves into naked haircuts and what not. (P.S. The Treasury last week announced a 20-year note to help offset the massive spending lately in Washington. Enjoy!

Michael’s TEDx Nashville YouTube video “Great Leaders Do What Drug Addicts Do” is the number one talk in the history of TEDx Nashville. It has been seen by over one million people in over twenty-five countries and provides insight into his seventeen-year journey from addiction and near homelessness to CEO and co-founder of an Inc. 500 startup that he sold to a publicly-traded company. This talk sparked the #MaskFreeMovement and brought awareness to Michael’s Mask-Free Program, built on three principles inspired by his recovery, showing leaders how to achieve balance, reclaim energy, and thrive in work and life. Michael is an acclaimed speaker, entrepreneur, award-winning three-time CEO, leadership coach, and author. His accomplishments include being named a Most Admired CEO, named to the Top 40 Under 40, and being recognized by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce as Healthcare Entrepreneur of the Year. Today, Michael is on a mission to teach individuals, organizations, and communities how to lead themselves by living mask-free. In his personal time, he is focused on being the best husband, father, and recovering addict he can be. For more information, please visit www.MichaelBrodyWaite.com to learn how the Mask-Free Program can help you or your organization thrive. Key Takeaways: We talk a lot about authentic leadership but nobody is doing it. Leaders are addicted to their mask. Practice rigorous authenticity, surrender the outcome, and do uncomfortable work. When you shine a light on the darkness you become limitless. Pain is the greatest motivator. God gave you a unique perspective, how many people are you hurting by not presenting it. The courage to rise above. That is what it's really all about, isn't it? The courage to rise up, and rise above all the crap that tries to keep us down. A sure-fire way to enable yourse;f to have the courage to do exactly that? FORGIVE. Forgive the ones who wronged you, forgive the ones who really messed with your head and your heart, forgive the ones who didn't ever - and will never - ask to be forgiven, and above all else, forgive YOURSELF for whatever it is you're still carrying around and demanding you pay an ongoing price for.   This week's podcast session is epic in its ability to heal you from the inside out. And once you start forgiving? You won't stop. This is legit emotional alchemy. Like, subscribe, rate, review, share a photo and tag @leissewilcox. We're all too busy to realize we have a problem and we're definitely too busy to find the time to go to a 12-step meeting. In this episode, I share how you can recognize the difference between busyness for a purpose and busyness as a means of distraction in your life, the difficult questions you need to ask yourself if you find that you're always busy, the importance of taking time to reflect on your life and feelings in a quiet space, how using busyness as a means of distraction is not sustainable, and more.   To learn more, visit www.drzoeshaw.com/73

I'm back from LA now. What a trip. The Bulletproof Conference was a chance to reconnect with friends and meet some new ones too.  Many of the recommendations at the conference are pretty much the complete opposite of what we are taught growing up about wellness. It can seem overwhelming. Butter is okay, nicotine’s okay too (but certainly not smoking), and so on. But many other hacks seem to be a mixture of the futuristic and the primal. As well as eating plenty of veggies, most of those gathered in LA are big fans of meditation and getting some natural sunlight in the morning. Hardly anything particularly revolutionary about that. Light is a drug - eh? Light is a big theme at the conference. Some speakers talk about how light affects your brain like a drug. Experts and exhibitors alike look at adapting your environment so that the lights help you to perform at your best, especially if you live somewhere cold, damp and grey, (sound familiar?). As well as our dearth of natural sunlight in a northern hemisphere winter, some of our offices and devices apparently emit five times more blue light than daylight, which really messes with our sleep and circadian rhythms. Today I'm with Scott Nelson, a man who knows all about light, and in fact has invented a device that is rather cool. And man, it's bright! Check out the podcast for more, and Scott's website here.
