There is a lot of controversy surrounding the documentary Elvis's Women. I haven't seen it yet. But it seems timely for me to repost this chat with one of his first lovers, June Juanico. The documentary, which I heard about a year before it was released, seems to be agenda-driven. June Juanico isn't. Nor am I.

There are more lies than truths about Elvis's love life, in Baz Luhrmann's movie. And June Juanico is one of the many women Elvis loved, whom Baz deemed to be unworthy of even a mention, even though Unchained Melody was "their song," and June wondered if, in the end, he sang it to her. She's a wonderful, feisty, forceful woman and maybe if Elvis wasn't such a 'Hound Dog' to women, she might have become his wife.

As a show about reading research to improve practice, you'd think we'd spent more time reviewing research on WHY practitioners should review research regularly. Well, just in case we haven't made it clear in the past five years, we're exploring both sides of the research/practitioner coin in these next two episodes. A quick monthly update from our cabin in the mountains while we enjoy some summer R+R. We were inspired by the crisp, mountain air and solitude to do some reflection. What does it mean to be a practitioner? A researcher? And how can we use recent discussions of police brutality to check our own treatment of clients? We even came upon a hiking Dr. Cody Morris to join us. So, find your own zen place of reflection for some research-discussion goodness. Articles for July 2021 From Research to Practice Kazdin, A.E. Jeffrey Westman arrived in San Juanico as a 19-year-old on a surf trip and fell in love with it. The teen dreamed of finding a surf shack and staying forever. Not surprisingly, college and a career won out, but the dream stayed with him. Thirty years later, he has built the San Juanico Surf Society, a danish infused, Mexican-modern resort for friends and family. Located on a bluff above "Panga Beach," the SJ Surf Society is a gleaming beacon of clean lines, industrial beauty, and humble hospitality. After his career as a photographer and printer led him to Scandanavia, Westman worked his way into a new thing called the internet. He ran Norway, Sweden, and Denmark for Yahoo. His timely exit allowed him the resources to try his hand as a potato farmer in Northern Sweden. Not something that one usually says during a conversation about building a health and wellness retreat in Baja. His return to the San Francisco Bay Area allowed him to combine his business acumen and his love of farming into a career in the non-profit sector, helping organic farmers thrive. In the process, he converted his Sebastopol farm into a retreat property and found that he enjoyed providing hospitality and creating community through being an Airbnb host. Westman says he "drew the short straw and had to look after his mother, who had retired to Baja Sur." A property in Loreto followed as Westman built his Airbnb portfolio. Old memories of that surf trip to San Juanico led him across the peninsula, and the hunt for the next project began. In this conversation, we hear the backstory of building a dream property in Baja. We can't wait to return to the SJ Surf Society and chill out in style. The SJ Surf Society is Slow Baja approved! In her wonderfully written and highly evocative 1997 memoir, 'Elvis: In the Twilight of Memory,' June Juanico recalls her love affair in 1956 with the man she calls "my Elvis." She says he was as 'the first true love" of her life, "perfect." But when we did an interview that year June and I also talked about the fact that their sexual relationship was never fully consummated, because of Gladys Presley interrupting their lovemaking, and about how June reconciled the Elvis she knew with the seemingly sexually licentious Elvis who, she says "wanted to conquest as many women as possible."

I did this interview with June Juanico in Dublin in 1997, when she was promoting her wonderfully evocative memoir, Elvis: In The Twilight of Memory. But be warned, apart from telling the tale of a youthful love story cut short by Colonel Parker, and by the romantic/sexual excesses of Elvis himself, it is sexually explicit at times and even addresses a rumour that was circulating at the time, courtesy of the crappy National Enquirer, and Dee Presley, Elvis's stepmother, about Elvis and his mother Gladys. That said, June Juanico, gave me wonderful insights into Elvis recordings I had loved all my life, such as Is It So Strange, and I, much to my embarrassment made her cry by telling her a story about the song Unchained melody which has since turned out to be questionable. Either way, she was once Elvis's lover and I was a lifelong fan, who truly cared about the man, hence this became one of the most intimate and revealing conversations I ever had about Elvis. Indeed, I didn't rediscover the tape until August 2020, and I regret deeply the fact that June wasn't the much-needed female voice in my 2017 documentary, Conversations About The King. But hey, now she has gotten her own 'show' and June Juanico more than deserves it.

Présentation : Inès Edel-Garcia / Co-interviews : Kathleen Franck & Said Youssouf / Chroniques : Said Youssouf et Eliott Janon / Réalisation : Simon Marry / Coordination : Bettina Lioret / Web : Charlotte Viguié
