My guest today is Kasey Pierce. Kasey is a writer/editor and Stoic columnist from Detroit. She began her career in indie horror and sci-fi, working with publishers like Source Point Press. Shortly after beginning to blog about Stoic philosophy, she was called back to her comic roots and received the opportunity to freelance content edit for Donald Robertson for his graphic novel, "Verissimus: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius". Her most current work is editing for CBT practitioner and Stoicism author Tim Lebon for "365 Ways to Be More Stoic", in which she wrote some original content. Her forthcoming work is coauthoring a book with CBT practitioners and Stoicism authors, Scott Waltman and R. Trent Codd, "How to Think Like Socrates". Check out Kasey's range of excellent articles on her medium profile. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, author Kasey Pierce shares her personal story of how stoicism helped her deal with her mother's declining health, create a new outlook on resiliency, and reframe her self-awareness. Through her experience, she learned valuable coping skills and began contemplating mortality in a new way. Listen in as Kasey and I also debunk the misconception that stoics lack humor and compassion. She explains how Stoics view resilience and the importance of choosing not to suffer, even in difficult situations. We also discuss the importance of creating emotional awareness and using Stoicism to avoid victimization. Kasey shares her insights on honing the ability to detach from situations and focusing on controlling the controllable, rather than being overwhelmed by a situation. Kasey also shares her experience of embracing micro-Adversities and overcoming weight loss overwhelm. She emphasizes the importance of finding people who are consistent and emulating their behavior. In this episode, I cover what we learned from Kasey Pierce about her journey of losing over 100lbs by changing her mindset once and for all. These are key concepts to learn for long term success
I get to talk with Kasey Pierce about impermanence, illness, emotions, running a business, being part of a club called Stoicism, editing a graphic novel about Marcus Aurelius, and lots more. Kasey Pierce is an author and editor from the Metro Detroit area. She's one of the editors of Donald Robertson's graphic novel, “Verissimus: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius”–a sweeping epic about the life of Marcus Aurelius. Kasey Pierce is speaking on creativity and Stoicism at Practical Paths to Flourishing, a virtual event celebrating women in Stoicism. She's one of the editors of Donald Robertson's graphic novel, “Verissimus: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius”–a sweeping epic about the life of Marcus Aurelius. Her prose horror novella, “Pieces of Madness”, gave her residency on the comic convention circuit in 2015. She joined the ranks of Source Point Press shortly after and created the “Norah” series. This acclaimed movie-optioned sci-fi made her a household name in indie comics–eventually becoming a flagship creator for the company. Kasey has sold-out at many conventions in the US, Canada, and overseas where she's also presented her panel on marketing and direct sales in indie comics, “Good Luck with That”. Source Point Press released her Viking horror series, “Seeress“, in 2019 and “Norah Vol. 2″ in 2020. Her next work, scheduled for release in 2021, is “Norah Vol. 3” and a space opera about Alzheimer's, “The Other People Who Live Here”. Currently, she's one of the editors of Donald Robertson's graphic novel, “Verissimus: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius”–a sweeping epic about the life of Marcus Aurelius. On her Stoic practice: Although I have to remind myself of this all the time…never ever let yourself be intimidated–it's illogical. No matter how much money the other guy has, or how much experience they have on you, we're all meeting at the same place: the graveyard. Hence, they're not better than you in any way, shape, or form. Once you embrace the reality of impermanence, it makes the difference between what matters and what doesn't crystal clear. In the grand scheme, the only thing that matters, in the end, is who you loved, how you loved, and your legacy. Everything else is merely a collection of data that no one will hardly remember. People Behind the Business: a show for small businesses with small teams & huge ambitions
The debut episode of People Behind the Business is inspired by a Facebook Live masterclass I had the pleasure of leading on how introverts can pitch businesses…the introvert friendly way. In fact, it also includes a brief audio clip of the original Facebook Live, in order to kick off the discussion. Special thanks to Kasey Pierce of 819 Social for inviting me to speak in her Facebook Group, Learn Social Media Marketing for Introverted Entrepreneurs. She is the author of the gore-horror novella Pieces of Madness along with her latest sci-fi comic book Norah, both available via Source Point Press. During our chat, we talked about her career as an author, the comic book community in Michigan, and the nuts and bolts that went into the making of Norah and some of the meaning behind things in the story. Kasey’s recommendation on who I should interview is Victor Dandridge Jr. He’s a comic book creator, President and Editor-in-Chief at Vantage:Inhouse Productions, who just recently took over the Artist Alley duties for WizardWorld. Kasey has a lot of great things to say about Victor so hopefully, we can get him on the podcast in the future. I visited Grand Rapids Comic Con where I sat down for an in depth discussion with author Kasey Pierce, writer of Pieces of Madness and the upcoming Norah. Kasey is one of the coolest cats to ever grace this show.We kosmic kids enjoyed a pint together talking comics, writing, family, religion, childhood, the '80's and much much more. This episode also features a foreword about Ms. Pierce provided by her sensai himself, Dirk Manning. And, as if that wasn't enough, as a prologue I got to spend two minutes with Anthony Carrigan ( Victor Zsasz ) of TV's Gotham.
This episode is loaded with Girl Power. I talk about two female comic creators Gail Simone and G. Willow Wilson. I also got to sit down with Chelsea, one of the creators behind Comique Con. A comic con focused on females in the comic world. It was an honor to talk to her and find out more about this iconic con, the first ever of its kind. I also induct the story ‘Luke’ from Pieces of Madness by Kasey Pierce into the Nerd Book Club. ]]>

In this episode I had the honor of talking with Keith Allen, probably better known as KFace on YouTube. You still might not know the name but you probably know the music. Before I get to the interview I cover some of the biggest news stories in the Nerdom. I then share a couple of KFace’s parodies along with the interview. I close out the show with a Nerd Book Club entry of ‘Dollface’ from ‘Pieces of Madness’ by Kasey Pierce. ]]>

What a fun, fun night. Thanks to our guests Scott and Nuri from Penguicon, Kelly O'Hara of Bebop Art and Kasey from Kosmic Kasey for joining us for just a great night of conversations, laughs, and we even managed to be a little informative...not to mention running a giveaway that you can still be a part of. We talked conventions, comics, art, women at cons, and all sorts of really great topics... As always though, our first segment kicked things off with the stories that have caught our eye over the past week. Samsung's announcement that their smart televisions are recording everything you say. Radio Shack filing bankruptcy. The problems with state income tax returns via Turbo Tax, which actually likely had more to do with the Anthem hack that resulted in 80 million full identities being stolen than anything else. In our second segment, we chatted with Kelly and Kasey about art, comics, and the female perspective on several of the conversations we've been having lately. We met Kelly at Motor City Comic Con last year in Artist's Alley (you can catch that earlier conversation with her here: https://soundcloud.com/itinthed/motor-city-comic-con-2014-interview-kelly-ohara-bebop-art), and it was great to hear more about what she's got going on, the various shows that she's involved, her art, Kasey's writing, and their take on things. Kelly is a Detroit-based portrait painter that has sold works internationally and shown work for over a decade from multiple galleries in and around the Detroit area, like the one taking place later this month that hit: https://www.facebook.com/events/922314677780270/. Catch up with her at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bebop-Art/239939760127 Kasey Pierce is a writer, vidcast-host, and comic-con personality from the Metro Detroit area. She's written pieces for AllThingsGeeks.com, AlmostNerdy.com, and quoted on the back of Dirk Manning's graphic novel, Tales of Mr. Rhee (Procreation of the Wicked). Kasey is also in the works on a horror anthology for Rocket Ink Studios to be released early 2015. Check her out at https://www.facebook.com/kosmickasey Segment three focused in on Penguicon, a convention taking place at the end of April that's definitely different than a lot of cons in the area. They describe themselves as a happy place where all geeky interests are represented, explored, and respected. A place with hackers, makers, foodies, open source software junkies, anime buffs, and science fiction fans of all ages and backgrounds come together in a hotel for a weekend and totally blow the roof off. And nothing we've heard or read so far can dispute any of that - programming tracks for the hardcore geek to the casual cosplay enthusiast, events, panels and fun for just about everyone. It's a safe bet that you're going to see us there. Read more about them and get your tickets today at http://www.penguicon.org/ In our fourth segment, we continued learning a little more about Penguicon and then doubled back into our conversation with Kelly and Kasey...and then we made the decision to continue things even on out into a fifth segment, which went pretty much like those usually do. That's all for this week's episode.
