True or false: Positive feelings towards aging can increase your life by up to 8 years longer. Our guest from Wyoming is practically shouting from the rooftops, "IT'S TRUE!". If you blame things on your age and feel diminished in your daily living, it can literally shorten your life. The secret to embracing getting older? Surrounding yourself with solid relationships, practicing gratitude, and admiring the modern miracles of life.   Deborah Healy Hammons, Consultant, Creative Writer, former PBS TV Producer, and former Minority Whip for the Wyoming House of Representatives, has a knack for seeing beauty all around her, even in mundane tasks. In our conversation, Deborah likened driving in rush-hour traffic to seeing a flock of birds communicating in sync. We may all have our own responsibilities and meetings to attend, we're all genuinely heading in the same direction, same flow of traffic.    She even shares her love for having a real, live person helping her check out at the grocery store over scanning at the self-checkout line because it allows her to bond with the person standing before her. When people generally try to avoid such arduous tasks, Deborah fully embraces them.    When it comes to living happier, more fulfilling lives, Deborah shares that appreciating the world's beauty allows us to cultivate a positive mindset and embrace the joy of living in the moment. And while we can't stop the world from turning and stop ourselves from getting older, we can simply age gracefully.    Topics Discussed: How to implement positive aging  The relationship between our feelings and how they contribute to  longevity  Creating a healthy environment to thrive  The importance of social networks and connecting with others Why we want to feel valued (and how to value others) How driving in traffic is like a flock of birds in communication. This week, we are talking with Randy Grimes, Baylor University Graduate and an award-winning 10-year veteran of the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Spending nearly 20+ years battling an addiction to painkillers developed while treating career- related injuries, Randy now uses his inspiring story of recovery and his 10+ years in the addictions industry. As an Interventionist and founding advocate at Athletes In Recovery,  Randy helps victims recover from drug and alcohol abuse.   One of Randy's leading reasons for helping athletes recover from their substance use is due to the gripping reality of inauthenticity with injuries on the playing field. As we discuss what it's like to suffer in silence, we find that there is a huge stigma attached to athletes and how they deal with their pain. Whether it's a physical injury or mental health, athletes are often led to put on a fake face for their fans.    Randy shares how easy it is to hide the pain on and off the field and what it's like to feel alone in your addiction. As Randy shares his personal story with humility and honesty, he transforms the narrative to focus on prevention, intervention, and treatment for substance use disorders and other health challenges. Join us as we dive into what led to Randy's ultimate recovery and his heart behind helping others along the way.    Topics Discussed: Unhealthy stigmas behind professional athletes' injuries Overwhelming emotions behind hiding your pain and struggle The harsh reality of hitting rock bottom and losing your identity Breaking the stigma behind asking for help Accepting people where they're at  To learn more about Randy Grimes and his recovery journey, follow Athletes in Recovery https://proathletesinrecovery.org. For Stephen, a series of tumultuous events in his teen years set off the addictive gene that sent him spinning into chaos.    At age 14, Stephen's mother committed suicide, and at age 16, Stephen got married and had a child. And one year later, his younger brother died in a car crash. Shortly thereafter, Stephen's wife filed for divorced and left him with his daughter. Stephen's solution to these events and everything else was alcohol and drugs, which, as you may guess, was a disaster.    In 1990, Stephen got clean and stayed sober for five years, in which he got an education in Architecture and built a life with his new wife and daughter. This week, Dr. Powers and Julie DeNofa are joined by Kristin Landrum. Growing up in Lafayette, Louisiana, Kristin describes herself as a high-achieving student who made excellent grades and often joined the Gifted and Talented programs at school. However, despite her academic achievements, Kristin shares how her first experience with alcohol at only 11-years old at a friend's house spiraled into years of a drug and alcohol addiction.    She shares how she was arrested for grand larceny after a drinking bender in college after deciding to "borrow" tools from the theater department. After going to jail after her 3rd DWI, Kristen knew she needed help.     After joining AA meetings, Kristin shares that her biggest piece of advice is that your first reaction is probably not the right one. Early in her recovery journey, Kristen says she struggled with a lot of anger and often lashed out. But after learning the difference between acceptance and allowance, she can now "feel her feelings," thus giving her the power to make different choices.    Now, living an alcohol and drug-free lifestyle, Kristin is a mother to an 11-year-old daughter and adopts abandoned and abused animals in her free time. She believes that by simply being available for others and sharing her sobriety story, she can help others find their own recovery as well.    Topics Discussed: Learning how to trust others to trust ourselves How recovery helps us pick up our broken pieces for a bigger picture Overcoming the feeling of reluctancy in choosing sobriety Being open about recovery & allowing God to work through your story Connect with Kristin Landrum:     Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kristin.landrum.96  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/krislan83/   Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast:   Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com  Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg    Connect with Positive Recovery Centers Online:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/   Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/positiverecoverycenters/      Contact Positive Recovery Centers:   If you or someone you know needs help, visit the website, or call the number below to schedule an assessment. This week, Julie DeNofa chats with Stephen O'Dell. Stephen is one of the Owners & CFO of Stages of Recovery and has been with them for Stages of Recovery for 12 years, serving in many roles.    Stephen's time with Stages began when he was a client, learning how to live his new life in Recovery. Starting his journey at the young age of 18 with big dreams and goals, Stages of Recovery provided him the tools, guidance, and community needed to build a life worth living.    Stephen later achieved his bachelor's and master's degree in Personal Financial Planning in 2016 and 2017 from Texas Tech University with the help of a scholarship from the Center for Collegiate Recovery Communities (CRC). He went on to get his CFP® Mark (Certified Financial Planner) in 2018. Stephens' unique, personal, and extensive professional experience makes him a great fit to help you and your family navigate the complicated process of finding help for your loved one in need.    Many people think of Wealth as a monetary value. O'Dell defines Wealth as "The relentless pursuit of a desired lifestyle, and the strategic maintenance of that lifestyle." With the help of Stages, you and your family can begin to define your goals and start the process of healing together!   In this episode, Stephen shares how sneaking beers from his parent's fridge at the age of 11-years old led to a short, but destructive substance abuse journey in his teenage years. Stephen shares what it was like to find recovery at a young age and the miracle of surviving a horrendous car crash from drinking and driving. Julie and Stephen discuss the importance of finding a strong community and why recovery allows us to live life to the fullest.    Topics Discussed: How substances give us a false understanding of identity & genuine connection  Breaking down the barrier behind the addiction treatment process Why the actions caused by our substance abuse rarely affect just us  Living life as a grand adventure through the recovery journey How turning to God can restore our broken relationships Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast:   Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com  Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg    Connect with Positive Recovery Centers Online:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/   Contact Positive Recovery Centers:   If you or someone you know needs help, visit the website, or call the number below to schedule an assessment. This week, Dr. Powers and Julie DeNofa chat with Glenn Carosella, LCDC-I, Program Counselor at Positive Recovery Centers. Glenn was born and raised near Katy, TX, and had a normal childhood, though being an only child, he spent a lot of time alone in his bedroom. Although he says he was an awkward but ignorantly happy kid, he often enjoyed playing with his toys, reading his books, and tinkering with nerdy things. However, his first experience with the world suggesting that he might be wrong was in the 5th grade where everything changed.    Although Glenn has two loving parents, he hasn't always felt a sense of belonging. In Junior High, Glenn was bullied for standing out. He says he lived in fear the entire year of 7th grade because older students waited for him in the bus line to beat him up. Feeling like something was wrong, he started trying different clothes and other personality quirks, hanging out with various groups in school. However, he still never felt accepted into any group and felt more lost than ever. Eventually, he was introduced to marijuana, and for the first time in his life, he felt like he belonged. Wearing the badge "drug addict" with a sense of pride, he felt like he finally had an identity. However, this led to a long battle with drug addiction, one he almost lost.    Since finding the rooms of the 12-step programs he attended, he finally found the true purpose and direction he was desperately seeking. Being involved in Recovery has allowed him to step into his dream role of a substance abuse counselor and help others who were lost just like him. According to Glenn, "I am finally getting noticed for the right reasons, and damn, it feels so good."   Topics Discussed: How addiction traps us into broken, inauthentic relationships Why addiction gives us a false sense of identity and security Recognizing the power in having a strong Recovery Community  Defining Recovery as being a part of something bigger that's adding to the world  How to find the simple joys of life and learning to laugh with others Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast:   Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com  Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg    Connect with Positive Recovery Centers Online:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/   Contact Positive Recovery Centers:   If you or someone you know needs help, visit the website, or call the number below to schedule an assessment. In this edition of The Way Out we have a stellar interview with Clinical Psychiatrist, Addiction Medicine Specialist and Bio Ethicist Dr. Carl Erik Fisher. As a person in long term recovery himself along with his clinical and scholarly work, Carl brings a unique perspective to the treatment of addiction, and the positive change that occurs in recovery. Easily one of the most enlightening and instructive ideas forwarded by Dr. Fisher is the concept that recovery can be thought of and defined as any positive change in one's life, which affords us the freedom to take the transformational power of the tools contained within our chosen recovery pathway and apply them broadly across any or all areas of our lives to affect constructive improvement. Recovery, in its purest form is a holistic wellness journey and we don't have to limit it to one unhealthy habit, or just one addiction. Applying our recovery process that worked for a drug or alcohol addiction can work for addictive behaviors and even for behaviors and negative or counterproductive habits that haven't reached the threshold of addiction. Recovery is a process, and it doesn't happen all at once nor is it often linear. When we continue to remove the harmful and addictive behaviors, we can begin and indeed continue the process of healing our minds, bodies, and spirits through our preferred recovery pathway. Carl and I explore an array of fascinating areas in and around addiction and recovery including stigma, mindfulness in recovery, and how Buddhist practices can be a primary recovery pathway or incorporated into your existing recovery practice, and a whole lot more so listen up. This week, we are speaking with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Ricky Byrd (2015 inductee with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts) (and guitarist/singer-songwriter). Having lived through the disease of addiction himself, Byrd has made it his mission to help others as a recovery coach and drug/alcohol counselor, who visits schools, rehab facilities, and detention and detox centers to perform, talk, and lead recovery music groups.    Byrd’s mission is to deliver the message of hope to those recovering from addiction.
