Katy Kirby is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. Her record Blue Raspberry came out in early 2024 and it's one my absolute favorites from this year. We talked about making that record and also typing lyrics on an old school typewriter, “Hard Drive” by Evan Dando, worship chords, playing bass in a church band at 13 years old, 4 Loko, and much more. Great talk! Listen and subscribe. This episode is brought to you by DistroKid. Katy Kirby is a singer/songwriter from Texas. Her second album, Blue Raspberry, was released on ANTI Records in January 2024. A Little Alternative's David Hogg spoke to Katy on her recent UK tour about the pressures of releasing a sophomore album, her experience of signing with ANTI Records, and the joys of recording and touring with her friends. You can catch A Little Alternative on RNIB Connect Radio every Friday at 9 pm or Saturdays at 7 pm. Our Record of the Week is Katy Kirby's Blue Raspberry. After graduating from Belmont University here in Nashville Tennessee, Katy Kirby released Cool Dry Place on the Keeled Scales record label out of Austin. The record received acclaim far and wide. The folks over at Anti- Records, home of Tom Waits and Fleet Foxes noticed it too and signed a record deal with Katy Kirby. The new label has a new expansion of sound on the record and features many Nashville musicians and explores concepts of religion, personal identity and what it is to be real.
Today's episode begins with a quick Sportscast in which Steven mourns the defeat of his surprisingly good Green Bay Packers and pays tribute to the lovable Detroit Lions (3:49). He and Ian also compare Detroit and San Francisco as music cities — it's Bob Seger vs. Huey Lewis time! Then they do a quick update of the winter Fantasy Albums Draft, as it is a big day for Steven's team with new releases by The Smile and Katy Kirby. (11:25) Then they break down The Smile's Wall Of Eyes, which sounds like a Radiohead album that's 90 percent as good.Next comes Steven's most anticipated part of the episode — it's an Ian Cohen pop quiz where Steven lists off 10 albums and asks Ian if he reviewed them for Pitchfork (25:45). This is taking "Remember Some Guys" to a whole new level. Then the guys address the discourse around Alex G's recent signing to RCA Records and whether he has the potential to become "Boygenius big." (40:38) In the mailbag, a listener asks about the recent commercial featuring a Das Racist oldie and an "explanation" of Hozier's success (48:25).In Recommendation Corner (1:00:31), Ian talks up the latest from the British band Courting and Steven reiterates Ian's recent rave for Glass Beach.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
It's a three-part ep. First, we have our obligatory discussion about Pitchfork's recent gutting. Then, we review the new Katy Kirby album, 'Blue Raspberry.' Finally, we pull out our Bandomizer game and debate the best/worst albums from a bunch of our favorite artists.
Today's Song of the Day is “Hand to Hand” from Katy Kirby's album Blue Raspberry, out January 26. Katy Kirby will be performing at 7th St Entry on Friday, March 1.

Katy Kirby will be joining myself and The Uptown Controllers on tour starting next week so I caught up with her on this special flash episode of That's How I Remember It. Katy was in the parking lot of the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach CA when she dialed in, so there's a little ambient noise, but that's life on the road. And perhaps it added to our discussion about learning to sing harmonies, quality of light as a memory trigger, the making of her amazing record Cool Dry Place, the oranges that show up in her songs, and the tour we are embarking on. So cool to speak to one of my favorite songwriters, looking forward to seeing her set each night. Season 2 of THIRI coming up before too long, listen and subscribe.

Will and David discuss the latest releases from Bachelor, Parannoul, and Katy Kirby.
Raised outside of Austin, Texas, Katy Kirby grew up homeschool, enamored with Jesus and was rocking out to Christian Contemporary Music from the late 90's and early 2000's. BUT THEN: she went to college in Nashville and her world opened up. She started questioning everything she believed about God and the church. She fell in with a crowd of musicians who were going through similar situations. She had a lot to let go of when it came to her high school education. Her parents sent her to a private conservative Christian high school. Once she was out of it, she realized how backwards her education was: how racist and close-minded the experience had been. She began writing her way to an understanding. She calls that time “the weirdest and one of the darkest experiences that I've had – trying to rewire my brain to not have a loving God that's ever-present in it.”She fondly looks back on her experience of learning how to play music in the church. She was 13 years old and playing bass for the first time in the church band where she was the youngest person by 25 years. The relationships formed with the adults in the band were fundamental, especially in introducing Katy to the world of secular rock and pop music. The music of Peter Gabriel, Led Zeppelin, Sufjan Stevens all came to her through the other members of the band. Her debut album Cool Dry Place really relied on her intuition to figure out what worked best for the songs, she talks about how that experience impacted her confidence. The record is rad and I think her intuition is spot on. Keep following it, Katy! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
