Who doesn't love a comeback, Slackers? Many huge stars of the 80's & 90's had their careers stalled at some point. Some due to substance abuse. Some had legal issues. Others just made poor business decisions. While for many, Hollywood just no longer viewed them as bankable stars. One example is Winona Ryder. Ms. Ryder was one of the most popular and successful stars of the late 80's and early 90's. But after an arrest for shoplifting, her career came to a grinding halt. After year of smaller roles, she one again became a big time star with her role as Joyce on Stranger Things. After amassing huge debts, both with private creditors and the IRS, Nicolas Cage set off to pay these debts off - by taking every single role that came his way. It's actually really respectable that he just went to work, reputation be damned. But after paying off those debts, Mr. Cage is back to taking a more discerning approach to his roles. So, while he never really went away, he somehow made a comeback within an active career! These are just two example of Hollywood comebacks - take a listen to hear them all!
If you're director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas, and you have been tasked with developing a sequel to one of the most beloved and highest grossing action adventures (Raiders of the Lost Ark) of all time, what do you do for a follow-up? Well in this case, you go broader, sillier, and DEFINITELY creepier! :o And apparently, you piss off millions of parents who were ok taking their children to see faces melting off on-screen for the previous one but draw the line at seeing some one rip the beating heart out of a man's chest! :o What resulted was the PG-13 rating and one of the highest grossing blockbusters of the '80's.....which was also savagely criticized for its high levels of violence and (somewhat justifiably) the cultural insensitivity of several of its characters and its overall setting. And one HELL of a ride featuring several memorable action set pieces and at least ONE beloved side character (Short Round played by future Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan). So on the verge of its 40th anniversary, how does this movie hold up? Let's find out as Harrison Ford is back as the titular hero along with several new cast-members including Amrish Puri, Roshan Seth, and Kate Capshaw. https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
We need to talk about Willie. Any fan of Indiana Jones holds a special place for Willie Scott, the oh-so-loud lounge singer played by Kate Capshaw in 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. But is that special place in their hearts or in hell? Now decades later, does time heal all cinematic wounds? Has Harrison Ford ever looked better? And why did Ke Huy Quan's Short Round never get a spin-off? The Old Roommates hop in a mine cart and revisit the Steven Spielberg adventure through their middle-aged lens. A makeshift roller coaster ride. Lots of bugs. Too much screaming from Kate Capshaw. And everyone's favorite sidekick: Short Round. The 2nd Indiana Jones film holds up well...but comes equipped with a healthy dose of bullsh*t and racism. Luke & Corrye scrap their plans for Deli and head straight to Pankot Palace. 25 years ago in The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges artfully crafted one of the most memorable characters in movies. The Dude was just trying to live his life, drinking white Russians, and bowling until he gets wrapped up in a complicated case, with a lotta ins, a lotta outs, a lotta what-have-yous. Enjoy Stuff presents The Big Lebowski Jeff Bridges is The Dude, or Duder, his Dudeness, or El Duderino; if you're not into the whole brevity thing. This week we look back on the Coen brothers classic, The Big Lebowski on its 25th anniversary. News General Mills has some tiny kitchen supplies to go along with your tiny cereal. It's not only action packed, but a nice homage to the Next Generation series. Jay is exploring the area around his new house. He visited Monocacy Battlefield National Park, which is the site of an important battle in the Civil War that saved the US capitol. American history can be valuable to learn Enjoy Movies! The Big Lebowski (1998) has developed such a big following in its 25 years, that it has become a legendary film. While not the most successful of the Coen brothers movies, it may be the most popular. And that's because of the memorable quotes, the unique humor, and the performances of so many Hollywood icons. This week we break down so many of the aspects that make this piece of art more popular than a Jackie Treehorn movie. Enjoy Stuff thinks The Big Lebowski is a must-see film. …of course, that's just our opinion, man. Do you like The Big Lebowski? Do you think that the rug really tied the room together? Clear the table and sort the bricks, we have LEGO! Enjoy Stuff looks at the history of our favorite building set for years! From the early days when the founding family first measured out the dimensions of the connecting parts to the wide variety of franchised sets we can get at LEGO stores around the world. And we test our knowledge of when their most memorable ideas debuted. L'eggo my LEGO! It's a history of the famous building blocks on Enjoy Stuff. It's founder, Ole Christiansen, founding the company way back in 1932, probably never predicted how widespread his ideas would become. Come with us in the Wayback machine as we say “Bricks for the memories” News Indiana Jones Toys have been revealed for the upcoming Dial of Destiny movie Ted Lasso gets a season 3 premiere Looks like TRON 3 may be a go Singer David Crosby passes little over a week ago Cobra Kai will end after 6 Seasons Valentine's Day-Inspired Pop-Tarts Bites will return this year Oscar Noms have been announced, Short Round and Data are both nominated for Everything, Everywhere, All At Once! Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay has been getting very Retro (Retro-squared?) by revisiting some Bob Hope movies from way back in 1941. Caught in the Draft and Nothing but the Truth were some fun films that remind you about a time gone by and how the past can be entertaining. Shua really committed himself when he decided to binge all of the extended versions of Peter Jackson's six-movie-spanning Tolkien stories. Love ‘em or leave ‘em, it can be fun to immerse yourself in Middle Earth and remember what the message of all the films relay. Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout The Matrix was a ground-breaking movie in so many ways. This week Jay looks at the story, effects, and influence of Keanu Reeve's classic Alice in Digital-Wonderland story. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, now that SFS has reached 1999 it's time to remember the hype, politics, and complexity of Star Wars-Episode I, The Phantom Menace, coming this Saturday. Enjoy Toys! One of the most wide-spread successes of toys has got to be LEGO. But it didn't start out like that. This week we look back to the humble beginnings when Ole Kirk Christiansen took his bankrupt carpentry business and made it into something that would change the industry. It wasn't an instant success though. There were many hardships, failed ideas, and more factory fires than most people could come back from. Luckily, his son Godtfred (like his father) was a persistent and determined creator. Once he was inspired by a set of building blocks he saw at a convention, they bought a plastic injection molding machine and the rest is history. Through some very clever innovations with the designs, LEGO began to see some success and spread across the globe. By the 1950s their basic sets were found in many toy boxes across the United States. The long history of the company lends itself well to our game “Just in the Brick of Time”. Jay will try to identify the decade some of the LEGO milestones took place. You can play along too! Did you play with LEGO? What sets of the building system do you admire? Did you read all of these shownotes? First person that emails me with the subject line, “I'm a LEGO maniac” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. A fantasy adventure with humor and a lot of heart. Shua has been immersed in a Star Trek soundtrack playlist on Spotify that includes music from just about every show, movie, and project you could think of. A nice variety of sci-fi tunes for your daily listen. Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout In 1998 Aerosmith would close their eyes, just to hear you breathing. Creepy? Not when you realize it's the soundtrack from the Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck disaster flick Armageddon. As hokey and over the top as this Michael Bay movie is, it's still a lot of fun. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, stay tuned for a little known post-apocalyptic film called Six-String Samurai, coming this Saturday. Enjoy Music! Music has been a determining factor of a culture since Ringo Starr discovered it as a Caveman. But in the 80s it seemed to take it to a whole other level. This week we take a look at where we got our music and what was popular. This week, 40 years ago, Men at Work had the number one spot with Down Under. And while Australia was all the rage at this time, it was just one of the many songs we would keep track of on the charts when we listened to Casey Kasem bring it to us each week on American Top 40. While listening to the radio was nice, we couldn't pick the songs we wanted. So we headed into the record stores for our records and tapes. Enjoy Stuff will share the history and origins of some of our listening vessels on this week's show. Plus, we remember some of the iconic stores that were enjoying their heyday in the malls and other venues across the country. It's a musical episode for the scrapbook. Come join us as we Enjoy Music! Turn your Temple of Doom into a Temple of Enjoy as we look at the classic Indy Sequel from 1984. Jovial Jay and Shua share a delicious dinner of monkey brains and eyeball soup on Enjoy Stuff! Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom wasn't just a gross out movie with dark action that was a catalyst for developing a PG-13 movie rating…it also had Short Round. But really it is an underrated Indy movie with lots of great stuff. And Ke Huy Quan is back in a new movie after being away from Hollywood for a long time. News Eggo releases Mandalorian waffles! And in other breakfast news, Tropicana Crunch is a new cereal that is intended to be eaten with orange juice instead of milk A trailer for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story has been released and we are on board! What we're Enjoying Jay was inspired by an Enjoy Stuff episode and rewatched The Good Place. It's still a thought-provoking series with humor and great themes. Shua is reading some pulp fiction in the form of a Star Trek novel. ‘The Vulcan Academy Murders” by Jean Lorrah is a goofy, fun Star Trek Murder mystery from 1984. Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout Be sure to check out Jay's articles on Retrozap.com. This week he looks at the 1993 Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes sci-fi movie ‘Demolition Man'. If for no other reason, you should read this article to find out the secret of the 3 shells. And make sure to check out MCULocationScout.com for some Moon Knight locations and soon, more Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Enjoy movies! Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom! The second Indy outing came at an interesting time in Steven Spielberg's and George Lucas's life. They were both dealing with bad relationship breakups and it manifested itself in the darkest Indy story we ever got. But all that gross out fun and dark themes sure appealed to teenage Jay and teenage Shua. We revisit all the things that we loved about this movie and some interesting trivia. Short Round was a beloved character that came from this film. Ke Huy Quan owned the role and it looked like he had a long future in Hollywood ahead of him. The Filmlosophers and Intern Amy jump into a parallel universe and discover a different kind of multiverse masterpiece in A24's Everything Everywhere All At Once. The Traversing Trio recount the vast universes the writer/director duo Daniel's reveal in what may be the best film of the year. Has the film changed the name of the game for multiverse flicks? Or does the artistic approach overwhelm an already complicated story? Grab your googly eyes & your popcorn, & tune in to find out in this week's episode of The Filmlosophers!
Together, co-directors/co-writers Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinart have graced us with what is likely the most original and uniquely entertaining film of 2022 so far. It stars Michelle Yeoh as the beleaguered owner of a laundromat who along with her husband (played by Ke Huy Quan) finds herself sucked into an elaborate adventure through the “multi-verse” where we watch several different incarnations of her try to navigate through a conflict which threatens to undo everything! As she traverses though these various universes, we see her as a martial artist and movie star, among much MORE unique incarnations….to attempt to describe it any further just doesn't do it justice. Three years after the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford return for Indiana Jones's next adventure (Although, technically this takes place before Raiders)! A darker film than Raiders, Indy is tasked with finding a magical stone that has been stolen from a small village (along with all the children of the village). Accompanying him this time are Short Round, played by Ke Huy Quan, and Willie, played by Kate Capshaw. There's bugs (and snakes, of course), chilled monkey brains, brain washing and human sacrifices!
