This week look at what would happen if Instagram and TikTok allowed 10 minute short video clips. Also, we breakdown why local network affiliates are trying to convince the FCC to start treating IPTV Streamers like cable TV providers. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: You'll soon be able to control an LG appliance with Samsung's app — and vice versa Shure launches Aonic 50 Gen 2 headphones with spatial audio and hybrid ANC at IFA 2023 Roku Laying Off 10% of Employees, Will Take up to $65 Million Charge to Remove Streaming Content Other: A New Paradigm in Immersive Audio Design Excellence Instagram is internally testing the ability to create Reels up to 10 minutes long By increasing the time limit on Reels from three minutes to 10, Instagram would be aligning its short-form video product with TikTok, which expanded its maximum video length to 10 minutes back in February 2022. The change would also put Reels in competition with YouTube. Full Article Here… Local ABC, CBS, FOX, & NBC Owners Demand The FCC Reclassify YouTube TV, Fubo, DIRECTV STREAM, & More As Cable TV Companies In a nutshell - A bunch of affiliate stations are asking the FCC to treat IPTV streamers like cable companies. Which would force the streamers to negotiate directly with the TV station owners. If local TV stations win, Fubo, Hulu, and others wouldn't be able to strike deals directly with Paramount for all CBS stations. Instead, they will need to go to each individual owner of each local TV station. For the record - CBS owns 14 stations throughout the US. California — Los Angeles — KCBS California — San Francisco — KPIX California — Sacramento — KOVR Colorado — Denver — KCNC Florida — Miami — WFOR Illinois — Chicago — WBBM Maryland — Baltimore — WJZ Massachusetts — Boston — WBZ Michigan — Detroit — WWJ Minnesota — Minneapolis — WCCO New York — New York — WCBS Pennsylvania — Philadelphia — KYW Pennsylvania — Pittsburgh — KDKA Texas — Dallas/Fort Worth — KTVT The net result would mean that live TV streaming services would need to pay a $1.23 fee per subscriber every year for the FCC regulatory fee imposed on cable TV companies. It's our take that the amount would start at $1.23 and go up very quickly. So Nexstar Media Group, Sinclair, E.W. Scripps, and Gray Television want to cut out the big networks and negotiate directly to bring their locals to streaming services. They hope to get better deals than what the parent companies have agreed to. They argue that the current situation is unfair to local station owners. The argument is that the deals as they exist today don't give local stations enough money to produce local news. For now, it looks like local station owners are ready for a long fight to get what they believe will be a better deal for them. Thoughts on the situation: I never understood why any local network could charge for cable access? What did they do before cable? We could barely watch some channels in the 70s. After cable they all came in clear. If anything, they should have been paying the cable companies to carry the channels. Let's say Hulu and the rest of them just say forget it! What happens? - The only real impact that I see is with the NFL Why wouldn't Nexstar just tell the networks that they want a bigger cut and have one big voice when negotiating? Sounds like the networks screwed the affiliates. What do local stations provide? In the old days they would provide weather traffic and sports. Now I get real time traffic on my phone as well as weather and sports scores. For breaking news, I follow my affiliate and if something big is happening locally I jump on their news stream. Maybe they should cut their budgets and have one newscast in the morning and evening. Are they really locally owned when a company like Sinclair owns multiple stations across the US?

In the News You’re in luck for 2021 if you are dragging your feet using Gutenberg and the block editor. The Classic Editor Plugin was published in 2018 to help with the transition to the block editor with support through the end of 2021. Now the Classic Editor plugin will be supported through the end of 2022. It may be a good time to re-think your transition plans on your websites. Frontity has been acquired by Automattic. Even though Frontity is a React framework, it doesn't mean that they are going to push React to the WordPress frontend. Matt Mullenweg wrote in his recent blog post that there's still a lot that: We can learn from decoupled systems and we can incorporate those learnings into WordPress itself as we emphasize performance, flexibility, and ease of development.I look forward to Frontity joining WordPress and channeling their efforts into the WordPress APIs, documentation, and Gutenberg's full-site editing tools.” Sarah Gooding over on WPTavern updated the community about the progress on the block-based Navigation editor screen. The screen got a status check last week as part of a Hallway Hangout meeting. Once the Navigation screen is available by default in the Gutenberg plugin, the team working on the feature will be able to gather more feedback. Matias Ventura provides a quick overview of the main areas and features currently underway for 5.9 in Gutenberg. Some are in more advanced stages than others, but together they paint a picture of what this will look like. Some News Around Security On August 13, 2021, the Wordfence Threat Intelligence team responsibly disclosed two vulnerabilities in Nested Pages, a WordPress plugin installed on over 80,000 sites that provides drag and drop functionality to manage your page structure and post ordering. If you have any friends or colleagues using this plugin, please share this announcement with them and encourage them to update to version 3.1.16 (or newer) of Nested Pages as soon as possible. On August 3, 2021, the same team initiated the disclosure process for two vulnerabilities discovered in the Gutenberg Template Library & Redux Framework plugin, which is installed on over 1 million WordPress sites. One vulnerability allowed users with lower permissions, such as contributors, to install and activate arbitrary plugins and delete any post or page via the REST API. A second vulnerability allowed unauthenticated attackers to access potentially sensitive information about a site's configuration. Please go ahead and update that as soon as possible. WooCommerce news They are planning to raise the minimum WordPress and PHP requirements needed to use the Action Scheduler plugin. This change will impact any plugin or theme that includes the
0228 - Appropriate emotional tone in the newsYou would appear to be a robot or psychopath if you read every story with the same amount of ‘tone of voice' – from a landslide burying children in a school to a tap-dancing ferret. You need to give appropriate emotional weight to the script, depending on its content and context. Although you should not be wailing in grief over a royal death, or announce with anger the latest unemployment figures, you can and should usually show some understanding of the significance of the story in your tone of voice. This is because of what we can call ‘universal emotions': ones which reflect your humanity and concern for your community. These might be a slight serious or sad tone at mass deaths (for example a plane crash), the murder of a child and so on.[1] Doing this will make you appear more human by showing empathy (as opposed to sympathy) and understanding of the story, without editorialising it. So, you can see that:· a story of a family killed in a house fire will be read in a different way to…· a story of the Prime Minister announcing a package of economic measures for the steel industry, which will be read in a different way to..· the discovery of a great bearded newt on a nature reserve, which will be read in a different way to…· someone winning £1 million on the lottery on her 16th birthday on the very first line she ever bought, as well as passing her driving test and getting engaged. The overall tone of each of those stories will be pitched slightly differently. Going in reverse, the final one could be read in a light, bright, fun almost incredulous tone, with a smile on your face. The previous story would also be light but it's not overtly funny although a ‘good news' story. The ‘steel' story is neither good nor bad and because of that, and because it is a political story, will be read in a more neutral tone. But the first story is obviously sad and serious. That's not to say that story 1 will be read with the same amount (albeit different) emotion as story 4, but you can allow yourself some empathy reflecting your humanity and showing concern for those affected. The same might go for stories of impending disaster which could wreak havoc on a neighbourhood (to your viewers or listeners – your neighbours and clients) such as a severe weather incident, or the death of a beloved royal… Within those examples, there might be different levels of empathy depending on the particular circumstances: one child killed in a building fire or a whole family; a hurricane that devastates a city or state or severe flooding which has affected farmland and roads; the royal who ‘expectedly' dies in her sleep at the age of 101 or the one who dies unexpectedly and suddenly in public in a Parisian underpass in the middle of the night being chased by photographers just as she starts a ‘new life'.[2] So, consider your message and its ‘meaning and receiving': your understanding of the subject: what it's about, its context and how it will be received by those who cannot give you instant feedback.Audio recording script and show notes (c) 2021 Peter StewartThrough these around-5-minute episodes, you can build your confidence and competence with advice on breathing and reading, inflection and projection, the roles played by better scripting and better sitting, mic techniques and voice care tips... with exercises and anecdotes from a career spent in TV and radio studios. It is not a suggestion that anyone should, or be pressured into needing to. We love accents and dialects, and are well aware that how we speak changes over time. The key is: is your voice successfully communicating your message, so it is being understood (and potentially being acted upon) by your target audience? This podcast is London-based and examples are spoken in the RP (Received Pronunciation) / standard-English / BBC English pronunciation, although invariably applicable to other languages, accents and dialects.Music credits:"Bleeping Demo" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/7012-bleeping-demoLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Beauty Flow" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5025-beauty-flowLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Envision" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4706-envisionLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Limit 70" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5710-limit-70License: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Rising Tide" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5027-rising-tideLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Wholesome" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5050-wholesomeLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license [1] A good article on what makes news ‘news'. Hello friends: Selecting a good olive oil has become a nightmare for the consumer, considering the many types available and with a multitude of questionable information available on the web. The best decision will always rely on your knowledge and sensory experience. Because it is a relatively new fat in the American diet ( about 30 years), I don't expect you to have a complete understanding, and the points below may help in your purchase decision. I have slowed down the speaking on this episode to give everyone the right time to assimilate the notions. I hope I was not too DULL! Read episode full transcript. Buongiorno amici: Once we get all vaccinated and restored some usual mindset, we will certainly consider a return to traveling. Italy's country will always entice the romantics, the food lovers, the artists, the wine enthusiasts, and everyone else impacted by Covid. We'll add the ladies looking to emulate the “Under the Tuscan Sun” experience to the list. There will always be an Italian man on a Vespa with skinny trousers looking to glamorize you. And once we are in Italy, we will confront cooking that vaguely resembles our accustomed to having. I have compiled a shortlist of the most popular requests to ease your dining experience once in the peninsula. Get your headset and put you feet up for 14 minutes. Read episode full transcript. Hey friends: Last year, while visiting Sicily, I met a chef during an event at San Vito Lo Capo, the stunning strip of land off the northern coast going west. The chef operates a small hotel and annexed restaurant in Pantelleria. As a guest for three days, I got an invitation, flew from Palermo Punta Raisi, and after a brief 40 minutes journey, landed on the island. All around me, the sun, sea, wind, and salt were waiting. Pantelleria, literally "Daughter of the Wind," rises between Africa and Europe. It is 67 km from the Tunisian coast and 85 from the Sicilian one. It does not belong to any archipelago and is the largest of the "satellite islands" of Sicily, with an area of 83 sq km and a perimeter of 51.5 km. Upon arrival, the stunning mountains held by painted clouds, the scent of prickly pears immersed in salted air. Read the full transcript. Subscribe to News You can eat 24 Video-Cast on YouTube. Hey friends: in this episode, we'll talk about a great seafood salad from the Amalfi coast outside of Naples, Italy. Driving on the road from Positano to Salerno, also known as the Amalfi Coast, you will witness some of the most divine scenery imaginable. Along this windy coastline, steep rocky slopes rush down to the sea, and tiny villages with colorful houses packed closely together cling to the rugged cliffs. In Campania's heartland, both farm life and cooking are a testimony to the fertility of the land. Over two thousand years ago, the Romans had already planted pears, apples, cherry trees, almonds, figs, melons, pomegranates, quince, chestnuts, and vegetables of all kinds, to mention spelled, millet, barley, wheat, and olive trees. Grapes already thrived on the sun-kissed volcanic soil at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Read the full transcript and the recipe. Subscribe to News You can eat 24 Video-Cast on YouTube. In the 70s, Indian pudding could be found in many of the diners and restaurants in New England. Somehow with the introduction of newer and eclectic desserts, the pudding slowly lost the appeal. Possibly brought with the British occupation, who seemed to enjoy something similar called "hasty pudding," a concoction of wheat flour with milk or water, cooked until it thickened. When wheat became scarce in New England, the early settlers began using cornmeal, in substitution to the grain. Hence the name of Indian pudding because cornmeal was widely used by the natives at the time. Read the full transcript HERE Subscribe to News You can eat 24 Video-Cast on YouTube. Legendary film director Federico Fellini loved it, and the poet Giovanni Pascoli wrote poems about piadina. The most straightforward combination of 00 wholemeal flour, lard, water, and salt has never tasted so natural and wholesome. Those essential elements continue untouched to this day. The ingredients' simplicity and quality make it a digestible and practical street food snack, consumed at every hour of the day, in kiosks, beaches, picnics, and while standing on street corners. We can call it Piada, pieda, pida, and pié, depending on the municipalities; still, the rustic flatbread represents the people's frugal meal and is now elevated to stardom here in the US by numerous hand-held food franchises. And so what is Piadina? Let’s figure out how to make it and stuff it. Read the full transcript HERE. Subscribe to News You can eat 24 Video-Cast on YouTube. Flavors + Knowledge offers some suggestions on the hospitality recovery post-pandemic. It is indeed plausible to hypothesize that, in the post-emergency, a further limitation will be observed for the sector. Catering and restaurant marketing will need to be healthy, sharp, and specialized much more than pre-pandemic. Our health emergency will be followed by hopefully the last phase, during which it will be a question of balancing the strategic importance of economic activity with the risk of spreading further the infection. Scrum Institute, Scrum Framework Episode #2 has been proudly brought to you by International Scrum Institute, https://www.scrum-institute.org You can also listen Scrum Institute’s Podcast from Apple, Spotify, Castbox and Google Play. Listen to Scrum Institute Podcast on AppleListen to Scrum Institute Podcast on Google PlayListen to Scrum Institute Podcast on SpotifyListen to Scrum Institute Podcast on Listen NotesListen to Scrum Institute Podcast on Castbox What Is The Scrum Framework? This Might Surprise You! What is Scrum? Well, without making things too complicated, the Scrum framework can be defined as the following: Scrum is an iterative software engineering process to develop and deliver software. Although the software is the main focus of the Scrum framework, iterative and agile Scrum process can be and is already being applied outside the software industry as well. Most people in the IT industry believe that the term “Scrum” was coined early in the 2000s as a parallel track of emerging agile software development and delivery trends. That is a piece of incorrect information! The term “Scrum” was first used and published by Harvard Business Review in January 1986. Hirotaka Takeuchi and Ikujiro Nonaka coined the term “Scrum” with their article: The New New Product Development Game. (Yes, two News) You should have a look at “The New New Product Development Game” to see how everything all about Scrum got started! Scrum can be used in all kinds of software development projects. To develop and deliver complete software packages or only some modules of larger systems — both for products and services of internal and external clients. The Scrum Framework is a lightweight process. It focuses on increasing the productivity of teams while reducing wastes and redundant activities. Scrum defines some general guidelines with a few rules, roles, artifacts, and events. Nevertheless, all of these components are critical, serve for specific purposes, and they are essential for the successful use of the Scrum framework. The main components of Scrum framework are: Three Scrum Roles: The Scrum Product Owner, the Scrum Team, and the Scrum Master.Five Scrum Events (Scrum Rituals) or Ceremonies: Scrum Grooming (Backlog Refinement) Meeting, Sprint Planning Meeting, Daily Scrum Meeting, Sprint Review Meeting, and Sprint Retrospective Meeting.Product Backlog (Scrum Backlog) or Scrum Product Backlog: An artifact that is used to manage and prioritize all of the known requirements of a Scrum project.Sprints: Cycles of work activities to develop shippable software product or service increments.Sprint Backlog: An artifact to keep track of requirements committed by the Scrum teams for a given Sprint. Self-organization and unconditional collaboration are critical elements of the Scrum framework. Scrum Teams do no longer require a project manager in a classical sense. With the Scrum framework, the Scrum Master and the Scrum Product Owner share the role and responsibilities of a typical project manager. Nonetheless, a Scrum Master or a Scrum Product is never allowed to overrule the democratic decision-making capability of a Scrum Team. For instance, only the Scrum team members can jointly commit which ones of highly prioritized Backlog items they will deliver in a Sprint as a software increment. Another central element with the Scrum framework is the continuous improvement that we enable with “inspect & adapt”. A Scrum Team continuously monitors, inspects, and assesses their artifacts and their use of Scrum framework to adapt and optimize them. These continuous efforts for optimization maximize quality, efficiency, client satisfaction, and therefore minimize wastes and overall project risks. The Scrum framework understands that the requirements are likely to change and they are not entirely known, especially at the beginning of projects. Every project has unknown unknowns. Sometimes a few, sometimes a lot. The Scrum framework helps us embrace that we can discover and deal with these unknown unknowns only while we are running our projects. The Scrum Team first fine-tunes and granularizes the lower-level or low priority requirements before it implements them. During Scrum Grooming (Backlog Refinement) and Sprint Planning Meetings. Openness for change, continuous optimization, and learning from errors are now becoming integral elements of the whole software engineering lifecycle. Another cornerstone of the Scrum framework is transparency and direct communication. The Scrum Product Owner works closely with the Scrum Team to identify and prioritize requirements. These requirements are written down as user stories and stored in the Scrum Product 15 Backlog. The Scrum Product Backlog consists of all tasks that need to be implemented to deliver a working software system successfully. A Scrum Team is empowered to select the user stories with which they are confident to deliver within the 2-4 weeks of Sprints. Because the Scrum Team commits its own goals, the team members feel more engaged, and they know that their opinions are listened to. This inclusion of Scrum team members to the natural flow and planning of software projects increases the team morale and subsequently augments the team performance. Scrum Masters possess another vital role in the Scrum Framework as they work as servant leaders for and with their Scrum Teams. Scrum Masters are trained facilitators to ensure flawless operation of their Scrum Teams. Sometimes they are master negotiators to protect their Scrum Teams from interruptions and fictive priorities of their stakeholders. Other times they are master communicators to remove or prevent known or anticipated impediments before these impediments bring their teams to dead-end streets. To only call a few of the responsibilities of Scrum Masters. We will cover more about the duties of various Scrum roles later. The Scrum Framework, in its pure form, is best suitable for highly independent, one team green field or brown field projects. However, the practical common sense of Scrum professionals did not stop there. With the introduction of additional roles and addendums such as “Chief Scrum Product Owner” and “Scaled Scrum”, it can be used within different project configurations too, including multi-team and geographically distributed project setups. We will cover more about these as well. For now stay tuned and keep on enjoying the lecture!
If You Watch the News You’ll Go BrokeWho would have believed after the crash how quickly the market would recover most of it losses. Is it a dead-cat bounce or is it a continuation of the prior bull market? Does it matter as long as you find a way to profit? Let's see what Nick's been up to.1 Bought Hyatt Call Options yesterday, in at $2.20 closed out with a 36% gain. Nick's rule of thumb for trading these markets now, if you get a 25% or more in a day take it! Bank of America (BAC) Nick got in yesterday and out yesterday at for a 34% gain. XLF is up 4%. The XLF has been beaten down and it's now making a very bullish chart formation. Another higher low will make it even more bullish. 2 Going ahead, he's still bullish on the overall market. Not every sector will go up. Tech has been the leader and Nick's opinion is that the money may well rotate out into financials. We could see another downturn, but Nick doesn’t see it in the charts. Turn the news off, your performance will improve. Nick got bullish in mid-March, 3-19. The Equinox is often a turning point for everything in life. Things were at their darkest at that point. 3. Gold and silver took a hit today. They were over-bought. They got parabolic and then pulled back. Nick made money twice on the GDX since March 23. The pattern is still pending. $1650 gold is a good support level, but it’s all about how the pattern shakes out. When the pattern forms the algos invariably follow. 4. Everything in the travel/hotel sector is in play. Watch the big retailers. Bestbuy had a big move. Waiting for Hilton and Hyatt to consolidate and will then go into them again. The big money is betting on a resurgence in travel and perhaps retail. HomeDepot and Loews are going higher. TJX is also worth watching. Not there yet. That's it for now.
