Send us a textThere is power in preserving the rich, diverse history and culture of LGBTQIA+ people, across generations and backgrounds, promoting creativity, collaboration, and community among queer people, organizations, and allies. Especially in this particular cultural moment, when the lives and stories of our queer community are being targeted and silenced more than ever before, we need to lift up and celebrate the institutions whose mission it is to collect, preserve, and share those stories and histories widely and proudly. Special Guest: Robert KestenRobert Kesten, Human Rights Advocate, is Executive Director of Stonewall National Museum Archives & Library, one of the world's largest and most significant institutions of its kind, celebrating 50+ years of preserving history and culture in the face of prejudice and hate. Kesten's human rights advocacy has taken many forms, including writing and producing an award winning documentary on the Holocaust at Concentration Camps in Poland, working on the Ghanaian Constitution, coordinating and producing events leading to Ukrainian independence, producing events for the first AIDS day treatment center in the nation, pushing for the decriminalization of homosexuality in Ukraine, challenging book banning, LGBTQIA+ inclusion in schools and navigating anti-LGBTQ sentiments. Kesten also worked on the West Bank during the Intifada and was brought into Egypt and Tunisia during the Arab Spring to try and establish human rights cities. Links from the Show:https://stonewall-museum.org/ https://www.inquirer.com/news/philadelphia/stonewall-queer-history-exhibit-drexel-20240407.html https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/op-ed/article296353869.html https://washingtonpress.com/author/robertkesten/https://sfbwmag.com/human-rights-leaders-honored-during-international-human-rights-symposium-at-florida-atlantic-university/ https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/opinion/columns/your-voice/2023/04/14/lets-act-to-ensure-lgbtqia-are-safe-and-valued-in-florida-schools/70110517007/ Join Mama Dragons here: www.mamadragons.org In the Den is made possible by generous donors like you. Good Grief, Charlie Brown! Back on May 9, 2022, for our sister channel, Pop Culture Addicts, we talked with Brad Kesten! Brad is a long-time voice-over artist and the voice of the iconic Peanuts character Charlie Brown! We talked about being a child actor and what that meant for him. We talked about whether it was easier to be an actor or to be a kid. What the role of Charlie Brown meant to him. We talked about how he approached such an iconic role, particularly considering he was not the first to voice the character. Summary Robert Kesten, the executive director of the Stonewall National Museum, Archives and Library, discusses his journey in human rights advocacy and the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in Florida. He emphasizes the importance of preserving LGBTQ history and recommends reading LGBTQ-focused publications and volunteering for LGBTQ organizations. Kesten also highlights the need to protect democracy and LGBTQ rights and encourages individuals to be allies by getting involved and supporting marginalized communities within the LGBTQ community. Takeaways • Preserving LGBTQ history is essential to prevent others from defining the community and to maintain a sense of identity. • To learn about LGBTQ history, read books by respected LGBTQ writers, follow LGBTQ-focused newspapers and magazines, and support LGBTQ organizations. • The top challenges facing the LGBTQ community include preserving democracy, protecting LGBTQ rights, and maintaining a sense of identity. • To be an LGBTQ advocate, get informed, volunteer, and donate to LGBTQ organizations. To be an ally, be a friend or family member who supports and stands with the LGBTQ community. • Fundraising is crucial for LGBTQ organizations, as they often lack the resources that mainstream organizations receive. Steve invites Kesten Jessee to recap a recent trip to Lone Pine Kennels in western Pennsylvania instigated by Kesten's good fortune in being the winner of a Lone Pine produced male puppy sired by popular stud dog, Davis' Rosedale Phrogger.  This was Jessee's first hunt with Mr. Lone Pine himself, Randy Smith.  He is currently hunting two Lone Pine-bred hounds and had lots of interest in and enthusiasm for the trip.Jessee recaps two nights of hunting with nine individual Treeing Walkers, all females, and has perfect recall of the events.  A highlight of the hunt was watching 2016 UKC World Champion Lone Pine Biffy Sue tree a Keystone coon after a four-and-a-half -year sabbatical.  YouTube producer Clayton Stark filmed the two nights of hunting for an upcoming Stark Outdoors production which will air soon.

Billy Dwyer of Slidell, Louisiana and Kesten Jessee of Lebanon, Virginia share a common goal; to finish a well-bred coonhound pup from scratch without help from other dogs.  Both are accomplishing what they intended to do and this episode covers their stories.Billy's hound Ruby is a Treeing Walker female and Kesten's hound Clyde is a Treeing Walker male.  Both are less than two years old and each of them had their owners often questioning their future outcomes.  The boys discuss how they accomplished the goal of having each hound treeing raccoons on a regular basis and making their owners proud. This is a short list of basic steps that enabled the hunters to realize their goals.  Each hound remains a work in progress but with more than one hundred coons treed to date, the plan is working to near perfection. This is an episode for the hunter that would rather have it his or her way than to purchase a hound created by someone else.  Don't let the title of this episode fool you.  These guys know their stuff.

The subject of the day is the phenomenal popularity of Burchell Davis' Rosedale Phrogger, a four-year-old Treeing Walker with an impressive competition resume and a mouth that's drawing coon hunters to the hound like mosquitos to a good dose of bug dope.   The impressive part of the Phrogger story is the hound's habit, on a consistent basis, of passing his coon-treeing ability and his indescribably loud and unique mouth on to his pups through what Steve calls the Phrogger Phenomenon. Each of the boys have some degree of experience with Davis' Rosedale Phrogger or his offspring.Stark is hunting a 10-month-old pup for Davis and Kesten is starting a four-month-old Phrogger/Lone Pine-bred pup that he and Steve co-own.  In each case, the boys come away being more than impressed with the results.Phrogger is on center stage on this one and it's a story that can only be labeled as phenomenal, told by guys that have nothing to gain in the telling.Closing the podcast, Steve and Ella share the mike to extend warm Christmas wishes and lasting gratitude to Gone To The Dogs listeners everywhere.

Steve sits down with a young man whom he believes to be the hardest hunter, for his age, of all the coon hunters he has met over his seventy years of following hounds.  If it gets dark at close of day Kesten Jessee will be out there with his hounds.  The amazing thing about this 28-year-old hunter is he is largely self-taught and his hounds are too. His success story revolves around his current hound Clyde, obtained as a four-month-old pup and trained with no help from other dogs, nor from released coons nor other popular methods.  The dog has never had an e-collar on his neck and at fifteen months old, has treed more than one hundred coons in an area where coons are particularly scarce. Without letting the coon out of the crib, so to speak, let's give a listen to an interesting interview with purist Kesten Jessee, coon hunter and dog trainer extraordinaire!   This one is for those of you that are attempting to do it yourself.
