WV unCommOn PlaCE

Welcome to West Virginia Commonplace! Today, we're going to pay homage to one of my favorite animated series from the past, Duckman. The show revolves around the adventures of Duckman, a private detective known for his wit and flawed personality, as he navigates his dysfunctional family and solves bizarre cases. Duckman gained popularity for its edgy and irreverent humor, as well as its satirical approach to social and political issues. The series was produced by Classco SIPCO, the same production company behind Rugrats, and they brought their unique animation style and storytelling technique to Duckman. From 1994 to 1997, Classco SIPCO co-produced the show in conjunction with Paramount Television Network. Everett Peck, the creator of the original Duckman comic book character, developed the series, and Klasky Csupo's involvement added their distinct visual style, making the show visually bold and memorable. However, Duckman faced some challenges during its run. It aired on the USA Network during nighttime, which made it difficult for young fans like myself to watch it without sneaking around when our parents weren't paying attention. At the time, I wasn't familiar with Jason Alexander, who voiced Duckman, and was surprised to see a well-known actor taking part in such a different project while he was also starring in Seinfeld. Despite having a dedicated following, Duckman encountered difficulties with the network, clashed with executives, and faced challenges from advertisers due to its perceived lack of family-friendliness. Eventually, the show lost some of its popularity, leading to its cancellation. However, Duckman remains a recognized and beloved show within the realm of adult animation. The characters in Duckman were fearless and unfiltered, with Duckman himself known for his quick and often provocative remarks. Here's an excerpt to give you a taste of his style: "Your ability to generate money doesn't make you a man. It makes you an ATM with legs. It makes you a commodity, which I guess is fitting since you dress like a whore."

What do you get when you mix half of Klasky Csupo, a children's fantasy novel from the 1940s, and a dash of Tim Curry all together? You get the subject of this week's episode: The Secret of Moonacre. This film is one of those movies that kinda tows the line between "Good" and "Just kind of average", but it does have a special something to it that I think certain audiences would latch onto. Just maybe don't use Sir Benjamin as an example of what a healthy relationship looks like. Join us as we discuss among other things prideful prophecies, terrible uncles and the women who (Somehow) love them, and a completely unrelated tangent about a Christian puppet series that Kristi got weirdly fixated on.

It's an episode we indecently titled… CONTROVERSIAL CARTOONS!!! Everyone loves a good cartoon, but since the birth of cel animation, this artform has occasionally been hit with the anvil of controversy. Many a cartoon has been labeled violent, obscene, sexist, pornographic, inappropriate, counterculture, anti-establishment, and of course, racist. In this podcast, MONSTER PARTY examines these troublesome toons, in an attempt to objectively assess their pejorative labels. Do they deserve their negative publicity? Were they simply a product of their times? And in an age of canceling, is there a place for provocative animation? Joining us for this merrie melody of mayhem, is an Emmy Award-winning writer/director/producer, actor, and quite the kick-ass stand up bass player! During the 90's, he was the VP of Animation at MTV, and brought us such classics as BEAVIS & BUTT-HEAD, DARIA, AEON FLUX, THE MAXX, and THE HEAD. Please welcome… JOHN ANDREWS! Since Felix the cat made its first appearance in 1919, children—and adults—the world over have been enamored with cartoons. Cartoon characters are the biggest stars in entertainment, today appearing in countless TV series, video games and movies. But if you think that cartoon characters have no use beyond entertainment, think again. Terry Thoren has spent decades studying the effects of animation on children. As CEO of CEO of Klasky Csupo, he was the executive in charge of production of 600 shows, overseeing the production of the Rugrats when it was Nickelodeon’s number one animated show, as well as the popular cartoons Rocket Power, The Wild Thornberrys, and the Emmy-nominated As Told by Ginger. He and his colleagues at Wondergrovelearn.com decided to channel the same passion that young students have for watching cartoons to help develop their language skills, cultivate emotional intelligence, and improve their language acquisition and learning habits and behavior in the classroom. Terry and his team have developed have developed over 200 instructional animations and 1,500 printable extension lessons in Spanish and English, which teachers say are creating astonishing results. Says Terry, “Young students develop language skills rapidly, and they quickly absorb whatever they see and hear in animation. This accelerates their understanding of new words in two different languages at an incredibly fast rate. Research shows when young children form an emotional connection with animated characters they model the behavior of the characters.”Listen Live to Inspired Parenting Radio Show every Thursday at 7 PM ET on OMTimes Radio, the iOM Radio Network, http://omtimes.com/iom
