Today, I am blessed to have here with me Damon Sununtnasuk. He is the founder and CEO of the Sunt Group and Palmara Health which is previously named Nature Cure Labs. The health benefits of MCTs have been studied over the years. Some people put it on their coffee, protein shakes, food and etc. When MCTs have been converted in the body, it becomes monolaurin. The three main types of MCTs are Capric, Caprylic, and Lauric Acid. They bring benefits to the body by giving immune support and regulation as well as an aid in ketosis. Damon is focusing on Lauric Acid as based on their research, it helps in immune, digestive, and inflammatory support. [11:33] Everything About Monolaurin: Role and Benefits in the Body Damon read a study about the use of Monolaurin to fight off Giardia Lamblia, one of the most common causes of malnutrition. One of the studies Damon has read used Monolaurin to try cure Giardia Lamblia on animal subjects in which the cure rates reached over 90%.  On the other hand, Damon has also read another study wherein Monolaurin was used on the animal subjects first before giving Giardia Lamblia. 60% of the test subjects didn't get sick. Research shows that Monolaurin helps in breaking down the protective envelope of the DNA and RNA viruses. Breast milk contains 6.5% of Monolaurin. Monolaurin can be found on coconut oil and palm oil. However, palm oil can only be harvested on sensitive environments which can affect natural habitats which is why coconut oil is more preferred. [20:21] The Different Ways You Can Take Monolaurin Before taking any supplements, you must contact a health professional in order to determine the right dosage for you to take. Introductory dose - Taking Monolaurin once a day, once every other day, and slowly increasing that up into the therapeutic dosage you're looking to get as an individual. The Question - Should I Change My Supplements if I’m Sick? Should I be taking different vitamins for general immune support and prevention versus if I am already sick or feel like I am coming down with something?   The Short Answer Yes, yes, yes!   Inna’s Response  General immune support for prevention is going to differ from supporting your immune system while you are trying to regain your health.    How to support the immune system for prevention For a typical 150 pound person, I recommend 1000-2000 mg of vitamin C such as C+BioFizz or Stellar C. I also recommend about 30 mg of Zinc and an adequate amount of vitamin D. The dosage of D should be based on blood tests that indicate your current status, however 5000 IU of vitamin D per day would typically be recommended. I use a liquid D for those who may have issues with fat soluble vitamins and the Vitamin D Supreme capsules for all others. Additionally Silvercillin is wonderful for general immunity and prevention and most people do very well with these.   How to support the immune system during acute infection If you are already sick, the above dosages should change and other supplements can be added to help you better fight infection. This is true not just for COVID-19 but for any cold, flu or respiratory illness.  Increase the vitamin C significantly for the first few days to up to a week but make sure you don’t take it all at once. In this episode, I explain in detail the process for finding your body’s tolerance for vitamin C but it typically involves taking 500-1000 mg of vitamin C every hour or so to bowel tolerance. There is a ton of research about the benefit of high dose vitamin C in fighting infections. I also recommend that my clients double their zinc to 60 mg per day for the duration of their illness but not much longer than that. 2 Tbsp of Silvercillin is also very helpful in acute stages of the illness. I’m also a huge fan of Oregano and recommend taking either 3 capsules of the oil or Oregano gel caps, twice per day for the duration of the illness.  Finally, if the illness is more severe, I’d add Monolaurin. Garlic can also be helpful, I use either the Allicilin (3 gel caps, twice a day) or Allimed (2 caps per day).    The Question - Are Immune-Boosters Safe for Autoimmune Disease? Are all immune support supplements safe if I have an autoimmune disease?   The Short Answer No.   Inna’s Response  When you have an autoimmune disease, the immune system is already over active against your own tissues so you don’t want to take supplements that will further stimulate activity and can increase the attack on your own organs at the same time.   Some common immune-boosting herbs to be mindful of include: Echinacea Astragalus Reishi and other immune supporting mushrooms Green Tea and Elderberry However, Vitamin C, Zinc D, Oregano and Garlic-based supplements should be safe.   The Question - Is Elderberry still recommended for Coronavirus? What is the deal with elderberry? Elderberry has been talked about so much about being great for COVID but now we are hearing it's not good anymore, what is actually true?   The Short Answer It depends on when you take it.   Inna’s Response  We are still learning about the novel coronavirus and COVID-19 and new information is discovered with each week that passes.  The consensus right now is that you can very safely and effectively take elderberry for prevention and for mild symptoms (unless you have autoimmunity). However if you do test positive for COVID and the infection progresses to the later stages, we would want to stop elderberry. At this stage, the immune system is overwhelmed by the virus and Elderberry could overstimulate the system making the problem worse.   It is still very much safe and recommended for prevention.   The Question - Is More Zinc Better? We are hearing about the positive effects of zinc on all types of infections and wanted to know if more is better?   The Short Answer Probably not.   Inna’s Response  Zinc is beneficial but it is a mineral and all minerals work together with other minerals in the body resulting in both synergistic and antagonistic outcomes.  When you take a very high dose of zinc, you risk depleting your copper. I don’t recommend more than 30 mg of zinc for prevention (unless you are taking extra copper). If you are sick, it’s safe to double the zinc, but only for a short time (no more than 2 weeks). This shouldn’t significantly deplete copper. A copper deficiency can potentially lead to more bacterial infections and problems with the blood and even things like aneurysms.  A hair test is a great way to determine your current zinc and copper levels. If you have never done a hair test, this test is quick, easy and not very expensive and you can order it yourself!  When you get the results, make sure you look at the ratio of zinc to copper which should ideally be around 8. Anything lower than 8 indicates that you can increase your zinc intake. Welcome to the health frontiers radio show and podcast where our goal each week is to empower our listeners to become the champions of their health and their future through education and proper supplementation.   Health Frontiers Radio COVID-19 Pandemic Update and Live Q&A On March 11, COVID-19 was officially declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, and it is proving to be much more disruptive and deadly than originally thought. Join the Health Frontiers Broadcast team for a live Q&A session as we review what is known about the virus, symptoms, treatments and prevention strategies that will serve you well in strengthening your resistance to viral or microbial threats. Reported illnesses have ranged from very mild (including some with no reported symptoms) to severe, including illness resulting in death. While information so far suggests that most COVID-19 illness is mild, a recent report out of China suggested that serious illness occurs in 16% of cases. Older people and people of all ages with severe chronic medical conditions — like heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes, for example — seem to be at higher risk of developing serious COVID-19 illness. A CDC Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report that looked at the severity of disease among COVID-19 cases in the United States by age group found that 80% of deaths were among adults 65 years and older with the highest percentage of severe outcomes occurring in people 85 years and older. The CDC’s recent (2/25) warning regarding the emerging threat of a COVID-19 outbreak in the US was chilling indeed: “It is not a matter of if, but when it will spread in US communities, and Americans should prepare for “significant disruption” to their lives as a result”. The world is anxiously watching the progression of this new virus which is already having far-reaching implications on our economy, travel, schools, and politics. What is a coronavirus? Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses (including the common cold) so named because of the crown-like features on their surface. The new COVID-19 virus was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019 and has since spread globally. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these first reported cases had links to a live animal market, suggesting the outbreak started from animal-to-person spread. Coronaviruses are responsible for two other recent outbreaks: the 2003 SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak and the 2012 MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak. Latest Data on Outbreak As of March 20th, the number of confirmed cases worldwide was 254,996 and total deaths numbered 10,415 with 87,351 recovered. The virus outbreak seems to be most intense now in Western Europe, and the US has taken unprecedented steps to try to slow down transmission including the temporary closing of schools, restaurants, bars, malls, fitness centers and suspended public meetings of large groups, athletic events, etc. Johns Hopkins University has created a real-time data tracking web page to track confirmed global COVID-19 cases which may be viewed by clicking this link: https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6 What are the symptoms? How does it spread? Patients with COVID-19 experience mild to severe respiratory illnesses. Symptoms include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing and can appear two to 14 days after exposure, according to the CDC. Around 80 percent of confirmed Chinese cases were mild, the New York Times reported, and the overall fatality rate is around 2.3% in China. Comparatively, the seasonal flu has a mortality rate of about 0.1 percent. The coronavirus mainly spreads from human to human. Like the common cold, the virus is transmitted when a person coughs or sneezes. It's also possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface with the virus on it before touching their mouth, face or eyes. For confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases, reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death. Symptoms can include: Fever Cough Shortness of breath CDC believes at this time that symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure. This is based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS-CoV viruses. Q: Am I at risk for COVID-19 from a package or product shipping from China? A: There is still a lot that is unknown about the newly emerged COVID-19 and how it spreads. Two other coronaviruses have emerged previously to cause severe illness in people (MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV). While we don’t know for sure that this virus will behave the same way as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, we can use the information gained from both of these earlier coronaviruses to guide us. In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely a very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures. Coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread most often by respiratory droplets. Currently, there is no evidence to support the transmission of COVID-19 associated with imported goods and there have not been any cases of COVID-19 in the United States associated with imported goods. The latest information will be provided on the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) website as it becomes available.  Prevention The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, the CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including: Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay home when you are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe. Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask. CDC does not recommend that people who are well wearing a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings(at home or in a health care facility). Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Could the old generic malaria drug hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil, Sanofi-Aventis, among others), which is also used for the treatment of rheumatic disease, be an essential treatment for COVID-19? This hypothesis, put forward by some, including Professor Didier Raoult of the IHU Méditerranée Infection in Marseille, was dismissed by other eminent infectious disease specialists and dismissed as fake news recently by the Ministry of Health. Yet it resurfaced yesterday with the presentation on YouTube by Prof Raoult of positive results in a non-randomized, unblinded trial of 24 patients. This follows encouraging in vitro results obtained by a Chinese team led by Xueting Yao, from Peking University Third Hospital, Beijing, China, which were published online by the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases on March 9th. However, the data were deemed insufficient by the infection community to recommend the compound as a treatment. Moreover, chloroquine is not listed among the four treatments studied as part of the recently launched European clinical trial piloted by Inserm, which includes 3200 severe hospitalized patients, including 800 French patients. Chloroquine was ruled out due to the risk of interactions with other medications for common comorbidities in infected patients, and because of possible adverse effects in patients undergoing resuscitation. The Marseille Study The European Union Clinical Trials Register shows that the Marseille study was accepted on 5th March by the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM). It could include up to 25 COVID-19 positive patients, comprising five aged 12–17 years, 10 aged 18–64 years, and 10 more aged 65 years or over. While the data have not yet been published, and should, therefore, be interpreted with caution, this non-randomized, unblinded study showed a strong reduction in viral load with hydroxychloroquine. After 6 days, the percentage of patients testing positive for COVID-19 who received hydroxychloroquine fell to 25% versus 90% for those who did not receive the treatment (a group of untreated COVID-19 patients from Nice and Avignon). In addition, comparing untreated patients, those receiving hydroxychloroquine and those given hydroxychloroquine plus the antibiotic azithromycin, the results showed there was "a spectacular reduction in the number of positive cases" with the combination therapy, said Prof Raoult. At 6 days, among patients given combination therapy, the percentage of cases still carrying SRAS-CoV-2 was no more than 5%. The Case:  At the time of recording this (March 17, 2020), the Novel Coronavirus is a global pandemic. Entire countries are now on lockdown, store shelves are empty, children are not in school and the news cycle is non-stop COVID-19 updates. The cause and the result of this is escalating fear. But, fear is an emotion and it's something we can each individually control. And, controlling that fear, could play an important role in keeping us healthy.  To explain how, I’ve invited Dr. Mario Martinez back to the show.  Dr. Mario is a psycho immunologist and the best-selling author of The Mind Body Code: How to Change the Beliefs that Limit Your health, Longevity, and Success as well as the learning series How the Mind Wounds and Heals and How Longevity is Culturally Learned and the Causes of Health Are Inherited.  He has published numerous articles in professional journals and lectures worldwide on his research and theory of biocognition.   Reducing Risk Before we talk about ways to improve the immune system, it’s important to note that these ideas are in conjunction with recommendations for reducing risk (like washing your hands properly and often as well as practicing social distancing).    Fear and Panic and the Immune System We talked about ways to boost the immune system through health practices and supplements in Episode 49 - Demystifying the Coronavirus. However, Dr. Mario says there is another layer to boosting our immune that has to do with its response to stress. When we experience stress, the body releases adrenaline and cortisol which suppress immune function. He explains that the best friend of Coronavirus is the panic and fear it causes because these actually help it spread.    The Challenge of Reducing Fear and Panic About COVID-19 It’s not easy to simply ‘not panic’ because our brain is trained to take signals from our ‘cultural editors’. These include authority figures like parents, teachers, doctors and newscasters. These people may have vital information but they may also provide us with so much information that it creates a fear or stress response that suppresses the immune system.    Improving Immune Function To fight a virus like Novel Coronavirus, the body needs to produce an antibody called Immunoglobulin Type A (IGA). There are ways to help the body increase the production of IGA. Studies show that emotions like fear, shame, chronic anger and an inability to forgive can actually decrease IGA production. So, being aware of these emotions and working to reduce them is important. Conversely, the research also found that being a loving person who cares for yourself and others increases IGA production.    Social Connections and the Immune System Having a connection with people increases your oxytocin and other kinds of hormones and peptides that help support the immune system. While you should still head the advice of experts to practice social distancing, it’s important to maintain social connections. This might be regular phone calls or video chats. Self isolating doesn’t have to be social isolation.    Positive Mindset during a Pandemic Despite the evidence that a positive mindset is beneficial to the immune system during a pandemic, it can be difficult to do. Here are some top tips from Dr. Mario for staying positive and supporting your immune system internally.  1. Create Rituals.  Our routines are good for our health and right now many of us are out of our routines so Dr. Mario says it’s important to create new rituals like dining by candlelight or playing board games as a family.  2. Be Self-Aware of your Interpretations.  We choose how we interpret situations and scenarios and we can choose to interpret them positively which ultimately decreases fear and panic and increases production of IGAs. 3. Practice Heart-Breathing and Generate Feelings of Compassion.  Dr. Mario shares a breathing technique that helps the parasympathetic nervous system and triggers the production of oxytocin.  4. Care for Yourself and Others.  Caring for others has a positive effect on our mindset but we have to be careful not to forget caring for ourselves or the benefits are negated.   5. Avoid Emotional Vampires Some people are so caught up in their negative loop that they steal from our emotional well. It’s best to avoid these people if possible or limit the time and emotional energy we give them.  6. Adjust your Emotional Default Mode to Positive We have an emotional default mode that we may not be aware of. It is possible to adjust this default to be more positive.  7. Maintain Perspective It’s easy to lose perspective with all of the dire news, but putting things into perspective can help us from falling into fear and panic, which is hard on our immune system.  8. Decrease Unnecessary Exposure to the News It’s important to stay informed, but Dr. Mario says we can over do it. He suggests getting your news only once a day.    We’re in this Together While there are things we can’t control, you do have control over what you focus on and think about. Instead of focusing on fear,  let's choose to focus on what we CAN do right now. We’re all in this together and, as we learned in this episode, helping others and being compassionate helps the immune system! The Investigation As of March 5, 2020, the release date of this episode, the Novel Coronavirus is a global health mystery. Experts are trying to learn more; searching for some kind of treatment, and we are all trying to figure out how to stay safe. It can be pretty scary. In this episode, I demystify the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the illnesses it can cause. There is so much misinformation out there and I’ve been inundated by patients and podcast listeners looking for some way to separate the facts from the falsehoods - and get some real truths about how to best protect themselves.  What Is a Coronavirus? Coronaviruses have been around a while and are a large family of viruses that are named for the spikes on their surface that look like crowns. Coronaviruses generally cause mild illness like the common cold and respiratory symptoms. However the COVID-19 is the name of the respiratory illness caused by the ‘2019 New’ also called ‘Novel Coronavirus' that was first detected in China. A few other terms used for this virus are the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, 2019-nCoV, or SARS-coV-2. How do you Catch Coronavirus? This is a new virus, which means nobody is an expert on this strain (including me). What we do know is that it's transmitted similarly to any flu virus. This would be through close contact and respiratory spray. The virus has an incubation period (believed to be from 2 - 14 days) meaning that someone could be infected without having any symptoms yet.  Symptoms of COVID-19 Symptoms range from mild cold-like symptoms (cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, malaise, headache, muscle aches, fever) to more severe symptoms like Acute Respiratory Distress to Pneumonia to the most concerning, Sepsis, Septic Shock and death - although this is less likely to be the outcome. The elderly are at a higher risk of symptoms being severe however, pregnant women and children are not considered high risk.  Diagnosing Coronavirus The test for Coronavirus is similar to testing for the flu - it’s a simple nose or throat swab. It can also be detected through PCR genetic testing. From my understanding, test kits are not available at doctors offices and only obtained through the CDC or public health department. Many people worry that they may have been exposed and that they are already infected. However, testing is only recommended if you have a fever and lower respiratory symptoms like shortness of breath and cough AND you had contact with someone that has been infected. If you have recently returned from a hotspot like China, Japan, South Korea, Italy, or Iran and have exhibited symptoms for at least 4 days then you may want to be tested. And, if you are experiencing severe lower respiratory symptoms and have already ruled out other pathogens like the flu, testing would be a good idea. Remember, we are still in flu season so even if you are feeling fluish, it does not automatically mean you have the Coronavirus. Running to the hospital or doctor’s office for testing could increase your chance of exposure, so be sure that you have the above symptoms before going to get tested.  Lowering the Risk of Coronavirus or COVID-19  I’ve had a lot of people asking me about prevention and whether or not they should be getting a mask (and if so, which kind). While it's hard to say if masks are necessary just yet, it's never a bad idea to have one just in case. The most common type of mask you’ll find on Amazon are surgical masks. These are not designed to protect you from major infections but rather to protect others from catching what you might have. Not only do these masks not have proper filters they also don’t typically fit completely snug so things can still get in and out. If you are going to get a mask, you need one that filters out 95% or more of very small particles. Those are called P95, R95 or N95 masks. They need to have 2 straps and fit snug so they form a seal around your mouth AND nose. These are typically around $30. It doesn’t hurt to get one because they can also be used to filter air when biking or running in poor air quality (great for someone living in a big city). Nasal Rinsing as a Preventative Measure Against Coronvirus One of my big recommendations as a preventative measure (or if you may have just been exposed) is a nasal rinse. When we are exposed to infections, we typically breathe them in and they hang out in the nose for a few days while they incubate. So just like it's important to wash your hands, washing out your nose can be really helpful. There are a few options for nasal rinsing. The neti pot is common but some find it awkward. I use the Neilmed which has the same effect as a neti pot but I think way easier to use. Whichever method you choose, make sure you use a saline solution. I recommend a mixture that is even more antimicrobial with the addition of 2-3 tablespoons of Silvercillin. Alternatively, you can use a spray called Xlear which is purified water, xylitol (a natural sweetener with antimicrobial properties), salt and some grapefruit seed extract.  Do Supplements Prevent or Treat Coronavirus? Because this is a virus we’ve never seen before, there’s currently no vaccine to prevent Novel Coronavirus and there are no medications to treat it. When it comes to supplements, a strain of elderberry called Sambucus Formosana Nakai has shown positive effects against other corona viruses but that doesn’t mean it's specifically effective against the Novel Coronavirus but it does have antiviral properties. Other natural antivirals include Vitamin C, Oil of Oregano, Silvercillin, Lomatium and Monolaurin. High doses of Vitamin C and Vitamin D may also be helpful in later stages as it helps modulate the immune system. Anything you can do to strengthen your immune system is going to be key. We can do this with our diet by including more colourful vegetables (eat the rainbow), taking immune boosters, and ensuring you’re getting enough probiotics.  Stop Worrying About Coronavirus It’s important, of course, to be aware and do all of the things you can to avoid exposure and transmission of the Novel Coronavirus but stressing about is not going to help. In fact, it’s going to hurt your immune system. As much as I love supplements, all the supplements in the world will probably not do too much if you are super stressed. There is an inverse relationship between cortisol and your immune system. When you worry and stress about the virus, you trigger the release of cortisol. Anything that you can do to relieve your nervous system and lower your cortisol is going to help - try breathing, meditation, taking time for yourself, listening to music, dancing, and laughing. Reality Check  While this is all very new to us, from what we have seen so far, the later stages of sepsis shock and death are not that common, especially if you are young and generally healthy. So let's prepare from knowledge and not fear! Certainly, the fat-soluble vitamins, vitamins A and D, both important. Lauric acid as a fat. Coconut oil might be a good fat choice for the fat in your diet. Monolaurin would be a very good choice for a supplement. Lauricidin is the best monolaurin to take, 3 to 10 grams a day. Be careful of your bowel tolerance, spread it out among your meals, and cut back if it starts to loosen your stool. Elderberry, which has mostly been studied in the context of flu, that probably has good antiviral properties. Garlic. Garlic appears to require very high doses if you're just taking a garlic extract. If you're taking stabilized allicin, 180 micrograms a day is good. But you could raise the question what if you're missing on some of the other important compounds in the garlic. I'll debate with some of my friends about that, but what's really been tested is 180 micrograms of stabilized allicin. Then zinc for sure in the immune response is super important. Then you get back to nutrient density. Although I'd give special importance to vitamins A and D, arachidonic acid just mentioned, zinc and copper, both, and then those supplements. If you're missing any one particular nutrient, then you're going to wind up with a specific vulnerability that will persist until you fix that one nutrient. Thanks, anonymous. 043 Everything You Need to Know to Interpret Epstein Barr (EBV) Results

The Case:  Emily has 2 autoimmune diseases  She decided to get tested for EBV (Epstein Barr Virus) which her doctor reluctantly did. Her doctor didn’t know how to interpret her results and dismissed her concerns.    What Emily experienced is very common. Conventional doctors often are hesitant to test for EBV and don’t truly know how to read the results. In some cases, they don’t even order the right lab tests.    Emily knew that there was more to the story than her doctor understood. She’d educated herself about EBV and knew that there could be a connection to her 2 autoimmune diseases. And, that her health could be on the line.    The Investigation   I was happy to help Emily better interpret her lab results. As we learned in the first case of suspected EBV, this can be a very complicated, confusing, and time-sensitive diagnosis. There are few people who understand it better than Dr. Kasia Kines, so I brought her back to discuss Emily’s case.    Dr. Kasia, she is a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition and the CEO of EBV Educational Institute and Holistic Nutrition Naturally. She is also the author of the Amazon Bestseller: The Epstein-Barr Virus Solution.    Four Markers to Test for EBV Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is complicated. In order to get a full picture of what’s going on with the virus (and determine if it’s latent or new), there are four markers that should be tested. These are tested through blood tests that many labs offer.    The four tests are:  EA IgG (Early Antigen) - this is the most important test and it’s often missed. If your doctor skips this one you won’t know your true EBV status.    EBNA IgG (Epstein Barr Nuclear Antigen) - Indicates a history of infection in non-acute cases. This tells the story of the long term status of the virus.    VCA IgG (Viral capsid antigen) - Indicates an acute infection and will remain perpetually present after initial infection.   VCA IgM (Viral capsid antigen) - Is present in the early phase of an infection and usually disappears.    For what the results mean, see the chart in this week's show notes here: Health Mysteries Solved Podcast - Episode 43   [chart courtesy of Dr. Kines’ website]   The Often Missed EBV Test The EA IgG early antigen test is the most important in getting a big picture of what’s going on right now with the virus. Unfortunately, it is often skipped by doctors. When you have EBV, the virus stays in the body (and we may not be able to ever kill it off entirely). Dr. Kines says that 90 - 95% of the population carries the virus and for many, it doesn’t impact their day-to-day health. Despite this, someone may wake up and feel like they’ve been run over by a truck. Could it be the latent EBV reactivating? The early antigen test is key in determining this - and it must be tested early on (within the first few weeks of the ‘flare-up’ or reactivation). If this test is not done, you could have active EBV and not know it which can be dangerous.    Symptoms of Active EBV A reactivation of EBV can present in a variety of ways. I could seem like the flu with severe fatigue and feeling like you’ve been ‘run over by a truck’. It can also present with cold-like symptoms (sore throat, swollen lymph nodes), or skin rashes, and even gut or digestive issues. Digestive issues could present as constipation, pain, or symptoms related to leaky gut. If you have an autoimmune disease like Hashimoto’s, it might present as a flare-up of the autoimmune disease. The real challenge with symptoms of EBV is that there are so many potential symptoms that could easily be something else. This is why EBV is often not considered or caught.    How to Decrease Elevated EBV Markers  When there is a flare up, the results on the lab can be very confusing - especially when the level is shown simply as above the maximum lab result. Dr. Kines has a protocol she recommends (and I use it with my patients too). This recommends a restricted diet and a lot of rest. It is all outlined in her book.  It is also important to continue to monitor the markers. However, Dr. Kines points out that everyone’s levels are going to be different. Some will decrease significantly with lifestyle changes while others may take longer. However, how you feel is more important than what the labs say. If you feel good, and your labs are elevated, then consider that a win. She says that it’s easy for people to get demoralized but it’s not all about the numbers.    Other Factors in EBV If someone is following the protocol and not getting results (either in how they feel or their lab results), then there may be something else at play. Two of the most common culprits are heavy metals and molds. For more on heavy metals, listen to episode 024 and for more on mold listen to episode 006. Mold can really block any efforts to decrease EBV marker levels because it devastates the immune cells and system. In cases where mold or heavy metals are an issue on top of elevated EBV markers, the mold and heavy metals must be addressed first.    Negative Reaction to the EBV Protocol Introducing a new protocol of supplements and dietary restrictions can trigger reactions. However, Dr. Hines recommends starting slow with the protocol. If there is a reaction, then you can stop the protocol and add in the different pieces one by one to determine if there is one thing that is causing an issue.  She also recommends, as do I, that you always opt for top-quality supplements to minimize the chance that you’ll have a negative reaction.    EBV Triggers to Avoid One surprising trigger the Dr. Kines mentioned comes from forest fires. This should be on your radar if you live near an area (like California) where there are a lot of forest fires. When fires burn, they give off a toxin called dioxin which has been shown to reactivate EBV. You can also be exposed to this toxin through cigarette smoke (even second-hand), campfires, fireworks, or the burning of debris. She also mentioned that wifi exposure should be closely monitored. This includes your own router but also the wifi used for smart meters that could be penetrating your walls. Additionally, she cautions against blue light exposure (commonly from TV, computer screens, and smartphones). Even your next vacation could expose you to EBV triggers (listen to the episode to find out how). All of these triggers can also reactivate the Epstein-barr virus.    Mystery Solved Let’s take a look at Emily’s labs. Her VCA IgM was negative which made her doctor think the infection was not current, but she had an elevated early antigen. Her doctor completely missed that. While her symptoms weren’t dramatic, she knew something was wrong and the tests proved it.  Because of her sensitive stomach, we opted for the protocol that included the amino acids and antioxidants Dr. Kasia talks about in this episode (Lysine, NAC, Selenium and Zinc). She tired Monolaurin but experienced die-off symptoms so we stuck with the original protocol.    Happy Ending Emily’s digestive issues subsided in about 3 weeks and her energy started to slowly come back over the next 6 weeks.  We retested the markers 12 weeks later and the EA was back to negative. We were also excited to see her VCA IgG went from 400 to 350 and that her autoimmune antibodies went down by 57 points too.  She was thrilled with her progress and will continue with a maintenance protocol and self-care protocol. She’ll test the 4 EBV markers annually to ensure she stays on top of it.    Eliminating Health Mysteries For Emily we were able to find the clue in her lab work that her doctor had missed. This is our last Q&A episode of 2019, but don’t worry — I have a ton more planned for 2020! I can’t believe the amount of support that you all have given me in 2019, and I don’t know if it’s possible for me to express the gratitude I feel in words.  It’s still astonishing to I’m able to do what I love most — talking to some of the smartest people in the world — and that it’s having a positive impact on people all around the world. Margesella asks: How do you create a community in real life who biohack and do these things? [20:50] I find events and meetups where like-minded people hang: yoga classes, meditation classes, sound baths, breathwork classes, etc. I go to all the health seminars and meet people I go on yoga and health retreats I’ve recently fallen in love with plant medicine ceremonies  I search for people on geotags at biohacking spots where you live, like cryotherapy spas, sauna spas, etc  Reach out to people in our Facebook group to find locals Lisa asks: What is the Brain mapping treatment you have done and has it helped? [31:40] Lisa is probably referring to something called neurofeedback, which is clinically proven to treat PTSD, insomnia, trauma, anxiety, depression, ADD, and ADHD I go to Peak Brain with Dr. Andrew Hill I also recently had a SPECT brain scan at Dr. Daniel Amen's clinic in Orange County, and he found that my brain is not in great shape. The scan showed an overactive amygdala, an underachieving cerebellum, and a fairly sizable area of my left frontal lobe that is getting very little blood flow. The protocol I’m doing to fix it involves many of the following modalities, as well as buying my own hyperbaric oxygen chamber for myself for Christmas, and taking a lot more fish oil. I hear so many conflicting messages from the health gurus on fish oil that, frankly, I’m super confused. But based on Dr. Amen's recommendations and experience, I’m going to be taking a lot more of that, at least until I heal my brain. Some of the other work I’m getting into is the Joe Dispenza books and meditations. You use breath and harmonizing your energy centers or chakras to change your brain.  I’m also doing his week-long intensive in February in Indian Wells, CA, to do further work on my dome. I use an app called Mind Movies to retrain my brain with the goals and dreams I want to manifest, per Joe Dispenza I did something called PSYCH-K therapy, which rewires subconscious trauma, as does EMDR  I’ve also been experimenting with micro-dosing LSD and psilocybin mushrooms and working on deep meditations those days. Ben Greenfield talked a lot about this on this week’s podcast, episode 250. There is an incredible device called the Lucia Light that alters your brain chemistry and ability to access deep learning and creativity. I have an episode all about this light coming soon as well.  I’ve also done DNRS to heal my amygdala and remove negative stimuli. I'll be taking Annie Hopper’s DNRS course in 2020, and I’m also doing the online version very soon.  I’ve also been training my cerebellum using the Zing Performance software, as covered in episode 246. The thing I'm most excited about is working with Dr. Lana Bach-Morrow, a Ph.D. neuroscientist that has developed a very powerful brain training software program called THINK Interfaces. So there is a lot of work to be done on the brain. Not only your thinking, from a metaphysical standpoint, but also on the physical brain itself. Sarah asks: I want to hear your thoughts on Epstein-Barr Virus. [54:20] I admittedly don't know a lot about viruses, but I do know that they are quite rampant and need to be dealt with. My first move would be getting very thorough blood work done, then work with a solid functional medicine doctor to begin to treat them. Medical Medium celery protocol seems weird to me since commercial celery (even if organic) is grown with NPK fertilizers and poisonous irrigation water, in some cases, which are incredibly toxic and throw all of your minerals into chaos. That said, the Medical Medium’s theory on Epstein-Barr being at the root of so many other co-infections makes a lot of sense, and his EBV protocol has apparently healed tons of people, as whacky as it seems to me. Ozone: I would get a medical-grade ozone generator and do sessions many times per day rectally, vaginally, and in your ear canals. Ozone kills all viruses on contact. You can also find a clinic that does 10-pass ozone treatments, which I was doing for a while. This can be expensive, but also insanely effective for viruses. Study Frank Shallenberger’s work on ozone Also, there are many frequency-based technologies that can be effective in getting rid of viruses. I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started!    Tatyana: Hi Dr. Cabral, I am a 37 years old female and use to be very athletic (doing bootcamp almost daily). I recently had to quit because I noticed a crunching noise when I would walk up the stairs. I do have some knee pain as well. Xrays showed nothing but I was told I may have caused a mild case of arthritis due to the intense work outs. I am devastated! I am too young to have arthritis, I am now taking up yoga. Can I get rid of arthritis? Is yoga okay? Any recommendations to get rid of the pain? I do not want to start taking medications. Help! Thank you DB: Once a year we try to go for a vacation as a family to places like Mexico, Las vegas, etc, and I feel like that could be money better spent elsewhere as I feel like those trips take a toll on our health after all the terrible eating and drinking. When I cry, it causes me to suffer for 24-48 hours. This has always been the case since I was a young child. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started! Mark: Hello Dr Cabral, After 13 pretty horrible years of undiagnosed heath issues I was finally diagnosed with systemic candida/gut dysbiosis/etc. For the most part I got better about 5 years ago mainly from using IV Ozone treatments. At that time after having about 20 years of sinus issues and a 93% deviated septum I decided to have nasal surgery for the septum and turbinate reduction. 2 weeks after surgery things got horribly worse…..the vertigo I had for many years came back, the daily disequilibrium, the nausea, and new symptoms of anxiety, depression, you name it. I am assuming from the IV antibiotics an oral antibiotics Doctors were trying this or that until my new Dr diagnosed me with Marcons. She says without getting rid of Marcons you cannot get rid of the other co-infections like candida, gut dysbiosis, etc. The problem is that when I try to treat the Marcons with traditional BEG spray or even silver with EDTA my VEGF falls and I nearly begin to seize up, I get minimal oxygen through my capillaries and have ended up in the ER multiple times for this. Do you know of any other Marcons treatments other than xylitol, sea salt, iodine, use, etc. that actually work? Maybe you could do a podcast on Marcons? Apparently while treating my Marcons my candida is now so bad that even 3 drops of GSE sends me for a loop and I feel horrible and can barely function. Sorry for the run on questions…just so much going on and very frustrated.  Paige: Hi there where can I find the research articles on fluoride , pesticides etc that cause cancer which you mention in this podcast about inflammation. Thank you Jen: Hi Dr. Cabral, Since December, my kids and I have been hit with every flu bug from strep throat to stomach flu, head colds to sinus infections. Earlier this year, I had a runny nose for about 15 days where I was constantly blowing my nose. Not sure if it was allergies or a sinus infection. About a month later I got hit with the flu. Most recently, I woke up with sinus pressure and a headache that started at my temples and radiated down the sides of my head to the base of my neck. This went on for three days with no relief from ibuprofen or sinus rinses. I finally broke down and took some sudafed. The headache finally went away but then I started coughing which I assume was a result of post nasal drip. About three weeks later, I was still coughing this phlegm based cough, but then my chest and ribs began to hurt. Feeling as if someone punched me all around my rib cage. I began to have a hard time breathing. I went to my MD and she said it wasn't pneumonia but that she could hear a rattling in my chest when I took a breath and that she could tell I was having a hard time taking air in. She offered an inhaler, musinex and cough medicine. Today, the coughing is a little better, but I keep waking up with sinus headaches and pressure and though I can breath through my nose during the day, It gets stuffy at night and I sound congested. I've been using "kick-it Sinus", "Serious Cough" and "Get Over It" by Wish Garden natural herbs. Does this sound like a virus or allergies? What could be causing me to get sick so much? Do you have any recommendations for the best way to build up my immune system?Thank you! In this interview with Dr. Jeff Moss I discussed all of the health benefits and uses of monolaurin which is one of my favorite supplements for infections and healthy immune system function.  The interview is about twenty minutes but it is packed with great information. What is Monolaurin? Monolaurin is a "monoester" formed from lauric acid which is a medium chain fatty acid.  Monolaurin is the main antiviral and antibacterial found in human breast milk as well as in coconut.  Monlaurin works well against certain viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.  Monolaurin has also been shown to improve immune system function in addition to its ability to target infections. Monolaurin has been shown to be effective for the following infections: Viruses: Epstein-Barr Virus Cytomegalovirus Herpes viruses HIV Measles Influenza (The Flu) Bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus Streptococcus agalactiae Group A, B, F and G streptococci Listeria Helicobacter pylori Fungi: Candida albicans Ringworm Parasites: Giardia lamblia I use monolaurin quite a bit for these types of infections because it is extremely reliable, effective and well-tolerated by most people.  Although it is found in high concentrations in coconut, you really must supplement with it to have an effective treatment for specific infections.  You can certainly increase your monolaurin intake by consuming coconut-based products on a regular basis. Here is a list of the lauric acid content of some foods;  monolaurin is made from lauric acid in the body (grams are per cup): Coconut cream, raw 37 grams Coconut cream, canned 23.3 grams Fresh grated coconut, packed 19.4 grams Fresh grated coconut, loose 11.9 grams Coconut cream pudding 1.29 grams Coconut milk contains 3.5 grams per 2 ounces. What is the best way to take it? The general recommended does is 1-3 grams for adults.  Monolaurin is best taken in small doses for the first week so that your body gets used to it.  The second week the dose is then increased for one week.  And then the third week it is taken at its highest dose for one week.  After that, I have patients taper down their dose for maintenance and to keep any infections from returning. As always, supplement only under doctor supervision.  Monolaurin is a phenomenal compound from Mother Nature to help us fight infections and improve immune system function.

When I arrived at the Ayurvedic Hospital in Kerala—land of the coconuts, I found thousands of acres, interspersed with twisting waterways lined with organic coconut trees. Doctor's there taught me how inexpensive organic coconut oil can heal your whole body using a technique which is called “oil pulling.” I am excited about sharing this with you. Oil Pulling There are literally thousands of types of bacteria in your mouth, including Streptococcus mutans—an acid-producing bacterium that is a major cause of tooth decay. During oil pulling, coconut oil produces acids which breakdown these toxic pathogens. When you take coconut oil into your body through oil pulling, your system converts one important ingredient, lauric acid, into monolaurin, which has antibacterial, antiviral and antiprotozoal properties. In truth, coconut oil contains the largest amount of lauric acid of any fruit or vegetable on the planet. Monolaurin is a monoglyceride with the ability to destroy negative invaders in the body that have a lipid coating. The lipid-coated viruses and bacteria that it attacks include the HIV virus and the influenza virus as well as a number of other pathogenic bacteria and protozoa. Another ingredient in coconut oil, capric acid, also boasts antimicrobial properties. Finally, coconut oil is about 66% medium chain triglycerides or MCTs. It involves rinsing your mouth with coconut oil, much the way you would use a mouthwash. Even in its solid form the coconut oil will quickly change into a white liquid as it responds to the heat of the mouth. So how do you do oil pilling? You'll need a container of organic raw coconut oil that is natural and has not had any fragrance taken out of it. Put a teaspoon to a tablespoon of oil in your mouth. It will probably be in its solid state. But it will melt as soon as you get it in your mouth. Swish the oil around in your mouth for around 10 to 15 minutes. Then spit it out completely. Finally, brush your teeth. This is best done twice a day after which you brush your teeth. You must never swallow the oil. You see, by the time you've done your oil pulling exercise each time, the oil will have become loaded with bacteria, toxins and mucus. You must then spit it out.

Even in its solid form the coconut oil will quickly change into a white liquid as it responds to the heat of the mouth. So how do you do oil pilling? You’ll need a container of organic raw coconut oil that is natural and has not had any fragrance taken out of it. Put a teaspoon to a tablespoon of oil in your mouth. It will probably be in its solid state. But it will melt as soon as you get it in your mouth. Swish the oil around in your mouth for around 10 to 15 minutes. Then spit it out completely. Finally, brush your teeth. This is best done twice a day after which you brush your teeth. You must never swallow the oil. You see, by the time you’ve done your oil pulling exercise each time, the oil will have become loaded with bacteria, toxins and mucus. You must then spit it out. I did oil pulling for eight months, after which my teeth were whiter, my breath was fresh and my tongue and gums had a healthy pink color to them. I was so pleased that I figured “I probably don’t need to do oil pulling any more”. So I stopped. After about three months, I realized that I was getting some slight swelling in my mouth. Many years before Ayurvedic medicine arrived in the West, I made a journey to hospitals throughout India to learn all I could about this ancient healing tradition. I was bowled over by all the marvelous things I did discovered. When I arrived at the Ayurvedic Hospital in Kerala—land of the coconuts, I found thousands of acres, interspersed with twisting waterways lined with organic coconut trees. Doctor’s there taught me how inexpensive organic coconut oil can heal your whole body using a technique which is called “oil pulling.” I am excited about sharing this with you. Oil Pulling There are literally thousands of types of bacteria in your mouth, including Streptococcus mutans—an acid-producing bacterium that is a major cause of tooth decay. During oil pulling, coconut oil produces acids which breakdown these toxic pathogens. When you take coconut oil into your body through oil pulling, your system converts one important ingredient, lauric acid, into monolaurin, which has antibacterial, antiviral and antiprotozoal properties. In truth, coconut oil contains the largest amount of lauric acid of any fruit or vegetable on the planet. Monolaurin is a monoglyceride with the ability to destroy negative invaders in the body that have a lipid coating. The lipid-coated viruses and bacteria that it attacks include the HIV virus and the influenza virus as well as a number of other pathogenic bacteria and protozoa. Another ingredient in coconut oil, capric acid, also boasts antimicrobial properties. Finally, coconut oil is about 66% medium chain triglycerides or MCTs. These offer a huge variety of health benefits, including sating your appetite.
