Ouzo Talk returns for season four with a deep-dive into the world of Byzantine Chant. With the help of Byzantine Chant expert Dimitris Koubaroulis, Tom and Nick have all their questions answered about this unique form of music, which while most closely associated with the music and sounds of the Church, is an art-form all its own that has not only influenced modern music, but has also helped to record and preserve the music of other cultures. There's more to Byzantine Chanting than what you grew up hearing in Church – in fact, it's a tradition of music that stretches back to ancient times. Join Christendom professor Dr. Sara Pecknold as she explores the importance of music for our lives as Catholics and as a means of glorifying God. Music holds a unique place of influence in all our lives. Because of its constant presence and its indisputable power to move our souls, music should be put to its highest purpose: to praise God and lead us to Him. This lecture invites the listener to enjoy exquisite settings of the Salve Regina from 17th-century Venice and to consider how the contemplation of sacred beauty assists in the formation of the soul. Dr. Sara Pecknold holds a Ph.D. in Historical Musicology with a minor in Vocal Performance from The Catholic University of America, where she served as a lecturer in the History of Sacred Music and directed the Sacred Music Consort from 2016 to 2022. In this episode of On Mission, Kate Fowler, Chris Pierno, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. are joined by Emily Lomnitzer, a professional vocalist and diocesan youth choir director, to discuss the role of Sacred Music in Liturgy and personal prayer.Sacred music, or religious music, is music that is set apart from daily use and is used in the various rites and liturgies in the Church, such as Mass. It has been used in the Church's liturgical celebration for centuries. It is an integral part of the worship and sacrifice taken place during the Mass. It has been said, "he who sings, prays twice." Some examples of sacred music may include: the Ave Maria, the Magnificat, Te Deum, the Gloria, Salve Regina, among others. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina is a famous composer of sacred music from the late Renaissance period and the Missa Papae Marcelli is one of his most renowned pieces.Read Catholic Apostolate Center Blogs about music. The impact of Jesus: he changes everything, he changes us. The first to receive him were his mother and those disciples who walked with him in Galilee and Judea. They were there when he entered Jerusalem the final time. The twelve were there when gave his body and his blood in the Upper Room, they went with him to Gethsemane, then, one by one, they left his side. Mary and John were nearby when he was crucified, the others were distant. He was buried, and they were alone. On Holy Saturday, they remained in a space of sorrow and shame, of shock and of trauma. The crucifixion was behind them, the Resurrection yet to come. What did they think, how did they feel, what and how did they remember in that liminal space between memory and hope? That is the setting of an original composition of the Notre Dame Folk Choir called The Passion. The composer of this astounding work is my guest today. J.J. Wright is the director of the Notre Dame Folk Choir. He holds a doctoral degree in conducting from Notre Dame's sacred music program, prior to which he studied at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music and interned with the Sistine Chapel Choir. He started working on The Passion with the Notre Dame Children's Choir and carried that work into the Notre Dame Folk Choir a few years ago. The final work of The Passion emerged from a broad collaboration with other artists and, perhaps most important of all, with his own students, the members of the Notre Dame Folk Choir. The Passion is now available on Spotify, Apple Music, and other audio outlets, as well as on the Notre Dame Folk Choir's YouTube channel, where there is a recording of the live performance of The Passion from Notre Dame on Good Friday, 2023. J.J. joins me to talk about the space of memory that this work draws us into, the creative process of music and prayer and pilgrimage, and the way in which the impact of Jesus never ceases, as the Paschal Mystery is the center of our lives as Christians, today and always. Follow-up Resources:●     “Creating the Passion,” article with interviews.●     “The Making of ‘The Passion'” (video) about the Notre Dame Folk Choir in Jerusalem●     The Passion live from Notre Dame on Good Friday, 2023 (video)●     The Notre Dame Folk Choir YouTube Channel●     The Passion on Spotify●     Website for the Notre Dame Folk ChoirThis episode is sponsored by the University of Saint Francis, https://www.sf.edu/about/camps-and-community-programs/#camp7Church Life Today is a partnership between the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame and OSV Podcasts from Our Sunday Visitor. Today's episode explores the world of pipe organ repertoire. I so often hear discussions of high-level performance pieces fit for excellent organ concerts, but so often we may not take the time to discuss an organ repertoire that's manageable and attainable for all levels of skill, and on a pastoral musician's available time frame for learning. Organists who may have started as pianists and are learning how to play organ, or maybe organists who are, quite frankly, overcommitted to other tasks, can find beautiful, accessible organ music that supports the Mass each week. That is the starting point from which I begin my conversation today. Today I speak with Joel Kumro, the Choirmaster and Organist at Saint Benedict Catholic Church in Richmond, VA. Joel is also director of his parish's concert series and is the instructor of Liturgical Music at Saint Benedict Catholic School. Joel, originally a trained classical singer, shares how he developed a regularly-rotating repertoire of organ music as he learned “the king of instruments” and how he's come to use it well today.

Cherubic Hymn: Liturgical Music Symposium, Oct. 2022

This hymn was recorded October 22, 2022, during the 3-day symposium at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Church in Blountville, Tennessee. The choir was comprised of Orthodox singers from Tennessee, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Missouri, Alabama, and a few even beyond those Southern climes. Choir director: Peter Fekula. The Cherubic Hymn is the primary cherubikon (Gr: χερουβικόν), or song of the angels, sung during every Divine Liturgy of the year with the exception of the liturgies of the Presanctified Gifts and those of Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday. It occurs after the Gospel reading and is interrupted by the Great Entrance. The Cherubic Hymn was added to the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by order of the Emperor Justinian near the end of the sixth century. The words of the Cherubic Hymn are as follows:"We, who mystically represent the Cherubim,And chant the thrice-holy hymn to the Life-giving Trinity,Let us set aside the cares of lifeThat we may receive the King of all,Who comes invisibly escorted by the Divine Hosts." Though the actual text is short, the hymn lasts for quite a while due to its drawn-out, ethereal style. It is our best imitation of and supplement to the singing of the Heavenly Hosts. In either 573 or 574, Justinian I had the Cherubic Hymn added to the standard liturgy. The previous cherubikon used was that of the Liturgy of St. James, which had then been borrowed into the Liturgy of St. Basil. This hymn, beginning with the phrase "Let all mortal flesh keep silent" is currently only used on Holy Saturday. (The cherubikon used on Holy Thursday begins, "Of thy mystical supper..."). During the period of the fourth to sixth centuries, the shape of the Eastern Divine Liturgy reached its final form under the guidance of liturgists such as St. John Chrysostom. In this same period the major formative changes occurred, most of which resulted in liturgical components that corresponded to the Church's developing theological understanding. Among them were the hymn "Only-Begotten Son" and the addition of the Nicean-Constantinopolitan Creed (countering heresies), and "The Trisagion Hymn" reflecting the Trinitarian theology being currently defined. In this period and on through the ninth century, hymns were composed and added to the Divine Liturgy, such as the Cherubic Hymn, sung while the priest recites the prayer that is now called "The Prayer of the Cherubic Hymn.” Source: OrthodoxWiki

Today begins our second episode focusing on the Exsultet. Last week we featured a conversation with Fr. Paul Turner about the historical context of this sacred chant. If you missed it, it can be found wherever you listen to podcasts and at ministrymonday.org. This week we speak to Nicholas Will, Director of Liturgical Music, Organist & Lecturer at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This episode is unique in its truly didactic approach. As a result, it is perfect for the priest, deacon, cantor or other elected layperson who is preparing to sing this Exsultet this year. Nicholas takes us through learning the Exsultet, step by step, even if you don't have a musical background. This episode in particular is most beneficial in its video podcast version! We recommend watching it, especially if you are learning the Exsultet this Lenten season. The video version of this episode can be found on NPM's YouTube channel, NPM livestream, and in the show notes of the episode at ministrymonday.org.
