Who's the Bossk? - Episode 248: You Can't Win a Maul with Richard and Sarah WoloskiDate: May 6, 2026 (recorded May 5)ListenTopicsIn the antepenultimate episode of "Who's the Bossk?" returning guests and fellow Star Wars podcasters Richard Woloski and Sarah Woloski from "Skywalking Through Neverland" join host Mike Celestino for a discussion of the two-part first-season finale of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord from Lucasfilm Animation. Plus some Star Wars headlines coming out of this year's May the 4th celebration, and more.
There it is, folks - the season finale to the latest creation from Lucasfilm Animation. It was certainly gorgeous to look at, with the new painterly stylings, and there was no shortage of thrilling action to sink your teeth into, nor did they skimp on the stakes. But while the season started off on a welcomed unfamiliar foot, by the end of this season, and certainly in these final two episodes, the hallmarks of what we've come to know from Star Wars animation showed their head. Early on, the admitted inspirations from films such as 'Heat' and 'The Dark Knight', provided a needed grit to a show which was ostensibly following a villain. This provided the show with a fresh personality - distinguishing itself from it's predecessors in animation. Unfortunately, the creatives couldn't seem to maintain that tone, as by this two-part season finale the old tropes and predictable beats of 'Clone Wars' rose into prominence. And while the appearance of a certain fan favourite character adds some very cool action, the unoriginality from a narrative perspective robbed the final moments of the needed pathos and drama required to land the plane in the most satisfying of ways. Tune back into Small Screen Star Wars in about 3 weeks, following the release of 'The Mandalorian and Grogu', for a full review!

On the new episode of Hyperspace Theories, Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester begin our discussion of the latest series from Lucasfilm Animation, Maul – Shadow Lord. The ten-episode first season has been releasing on Disney+ with paired episodes each Monday in April 2026, culminating in the season finale on May the Fourth. The creative team already has confirmed a second season of the series is in production, ensuring the character arcs of the principal figures in the story will have much more to come. For this podcast episode, we focus on the world-building developed for Maul – Shadow Lord and how the series reveals it across the first six episodes. The first episode, titled "The Dark Revenge" rather ominously, naturally does a lot of the heavy lifting, but additional layers and implications to the world-building continue to unfold in further episodes. Interestingly, the season (through eight episodes) is set entirely on the planet of Janix, which has many recognizable location types from previous Star Wars storytelling as well as elements familiar from its other inspirational source material, such as gangster films and police procedurals. More importantly, however, Maul – Shadow Lord benefits from a development process that facilitated the entire season to be designed and written as a whole. This enabled the writers and creators to plan out the core character arcs, then build the world to suit the needs of that story in a way that feels natural and organic to the audience. From the symmetry in the disrupted fates of Maul and Devon to the buddy-cop duo of Lawson and Two-Boots, the criminal underworld and a Master-Padawan relationship, Maul – Shadow Lord takes advantage of its ability to rely on common traits and tropes to build a world with strong verisimilitude that serves, rather than distracts from, the trials and tribulations of the characters. Who's the Bossk? - Episode 244: A Tale of Two Boots with David Yeh, Athena Yvette Portillo, Brad Rau, and Matt MichnovetzDate: April 15, 2026 (recorded April 14)ListenTopicsReturning guest and fellow Star Wars fan David Yeh joins "Who's the Bossk?" host Mike Celestino for a discussion of the third and fourth episodes of Lucasfilm Animation's new Disney+ series Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord. Plus the show's producer Athena Yvette Portillo, supervising director Brad Rau, and writer / executive producer Matt Michnovetz stop by to talk about their impressive work, we go over this week's Star Wars headlines, and more!
Now that the premiere is out of the way, the team at Lucasfilm Animation can focus on driving the story forward with authority. The pacing is much improved this week as time feel more evenly dispersed across the characters. There's a greater concentration on characters who can wield a lightsaber and it's appreciated. No shade to the crime syndicate storyline, but we've kind of seen all that already (it was quite literally a 'Clone Wars' arc). The action remains strong while taking another step forward with lightsaber duels joining the mix. Plus, the fast cutting from last week seems to have been dialed back, which is appreciated as it provides more clarity in action scenes. For example, Devon's engagements with Maul are gripping, and with the additional time provided to Master Daki, the stakes feel ratcheted up. Kevin Kinner's music remains a highlight, the illusions to the Anakin vs Obi-Wan Mustafar theme was a particular highlight. In general, there is still room for more character growth, especially with characters not named Maul, who really can't/won't change - but happy to proven wrong! This show feels like it's in full swing already, which is good because next week things look to be really heating up as we hit the half way mark. Julian and Rachel unpack it all!

It's been some time since we've been able to sink our pointy teeth into a meaty Star Wars animated project. Since the finale of 'The Bad Batch' all the way back in May of 2024, all we've had to tie us over were anthology installments of varying quality. Praise the Force, that wait is finally over with the release of 'Maul: Shadow Lord', the latest full length series from Lucasfilm Animation. The series marks another technical leap forward for the animation studio, taking their patented visual style and adding another layer of detail and artistry that jumps off the screen. The story follows the titular, Maul shortly after the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire, he's looking for revenge and the series wastes no time dropping us right into the thick of things (3 car/speeder chases in 40 mins is impressive). And while we know much of Maul's criminal dealings (and most of the rest of his life actually), the introduction of a new Padawan into the mix, another apprentice-to-be for Maul, adds a layer of intrigue to an otherwise underworld focused story. Join Julian and Rachel as they unpack Chapter 1: "The Dark Revenge" and Chapter 2: "Sinister Schemes", in intricate detail.

I just may, whaddya say? Comic-Con came and went this year, and maybe because the MCU and DCU were so muted, but there were still some good announcements. Xbox says game pass revenue is up, so is it profitable? Wolfenstein is heading to TV, and EA says no to $80. Air Bud is returning and I have serious questions, South Park takes time in its return, Star Trek goes all in on Comic Con, plus reviews of Happy Gilmore 2 and Fantastic Four!
Lucasfilm Animation has been hard at work on their next major project, 'Maul: Shadow Lord', but they've found the time to deliver another installment in their "Tales of" anthology series. The first ones covering the Jedi and the Empire, they now turn their focus towards the Underworld. However, be warned, this is a bit of a misnomer. Don't expect any crime syndicates or really any large scale criminality here. These 2 mini-arcs instead focus on Asajj Ventress (I know, not the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the Underworld) as she assists a young Jedi on the run from the Empire, and the origin story of Cad Bane. Which admittedly is closer in line with the criminal underworld concept, but is really more interested in telling a western style revenge story instead. All in all, despite the always great visuals and sound/music design, and few interesting ideas, there's not enough meat on the bone here to satisfy most viewers. But most disappointing is its failure to capitalize on the potential of the Underworld concept.

One of the most menacing and magnetic figures in the Star Wars universe is back. At Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo, Lucasfilm revealed Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, an all-new animated series heading to Disney+ in 2026. The show will bring back Sam Witwer as the voice of Darth Maul, marking another chapter in the character's legacy that stretches from The Phantom Menace to Clone Wars, Rebels, and even Solo: A Star Wars Story.A Darker Chapter in Maul's SagaShadow Lord picks up after the events of The Clone Wars, exploring Maul's return to the shadows as he rebuilds his criminal empire on a remote planet still untouched by the Empire's grip. According to footage shown at the Lucasfilm Animation panel, this is not a redemption arc. This is Maul at his most cunning and brutal—still burning with rage and ambition. The clip shown in Tokyo sets the tone clearly: gritty and intense. We see Maul leading a prison break to rescue a Force-sensitive Twi'lek, whom he offers to train. The scene closes with a flurry of lightsaber combat as Maul cuts down multiple enemies with ruthless efficiency. The animation leans darker in tone and palette, clearly setting this series apart from previous entries. The Return of Sam WitwerFans of Clone Wars and Rebels will be thrilled to see Sam Witwer return as Maul. His voice performance has been integral to the character's transformation from silent assassin to tragic antihero. Witwer's ability to convey Maul's internal torment and calculating menace has made the character one of the most layered villains in Star Wars canon.A New Era for Star Wars AnimationShadow Lord arrives at a time when Lucasfilm Animation is doubling down on character-driven stories. This series promises to delve into Maul's psychology, power struggles, and his role in the criminal underworld. It's not about galactic conquest. It's about survival, manipulation, and control. With Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord set to launch in 2026, fans can expect a thrilling, emotionally charged series that finally gives Maul the center stage he deserves.

The second season of Lucasfilm Animation's series of shorts is here with Tales of the Empire, the follow up to Tales of the Jedi. The six shorts follow Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee, an unlikely selection but one I was interested in. Unfortunately, while these episodes display stellar animation, music, and compelling themes, the 3-part structure of Tales and a lackluster end to Morgan's story hold this series back. Hear all my thoughts and analysis in this episode, Enjoy!Follow on Instgram: @star_wars_markofbalance
Last year on Star Wars Day (May the 4th), Lucasfilm Animation surprised us with 'Tales of the Jedi' a mini-series of shorts dedicated to showing some untold stories from before the fall of the Jedi. This seems to have become somewhat of a tradition, as this year, on the same day, we got 'Tales of the Empire'. A darker twist on the same concept. This time though, it was bit more focused. Two stories, told in three parts each, for a total of six shorts. The first story follows Morgan Elsbeth and her journey of revenge, which begins with her as a young girl on Dathomir to where we fist met her in 'The Mandalorian' season three. Unfortunately, despite another noticeable step forward in animation quality throughout, this first story-arch leaves a lot to be desired. While 'Tales of the Jedi' revealed secrets of Jedi's pasts, Morgan's doesn't really provide the audience with any new information. Instead, just expanding on a lot of which we already knew or could have inferred. The second half of 'Tales of the Empire' however does pack more of a punch. We follow Barriss Offee, a young Jedi Padawan we had not seen since she framed Ahsoka for the Temple bombing in 'The Clone Wars', as she's recruited to become an Imperial Inquisitor. These final three episodes are filled with fascinating glimpses into the Inquisitorius Program, insightful dialogue into the psyche of the fallen Jedi that make up their order, and some genuine twists that keep you guessing throughout. Listen as Julian and Rachel unpack each mini-episode, and discuss the package as a whole.

The exciting escape last week left us with the unresolved conflict between Crosshair and the rest of his former squad. In the podcast we discussed how it would be a good idea for the show to slow down for a moment and let Crosshair hash things out with Hunter and Wrecker before jumping back into a larger plot driven narrative. Fortunately it seems like the folks over at Lucasfilm Animation were way ahead of us, as they did just that this week. With a return to Pabu for a reset, the team meets up with Echo to gather additional intel on the whereabouts of Tantiss. The mission takes Crosshair back to the events of "The Outpost" for a spiritual sequel, which feels more than appropriate considering where Crosshair is now in his character arc. Julian and Rachel break down every moment of discord whilst Crosshair does the difficult work of earning back trust.

Smell that regs? That's the smell of fresh Star Wars animation - breath it in. 'The Bad Batch' dropped it's hotly anticipated 3-part premiere this week and your Small Screen Star Wars hosts are back to unpack each beautifully crafted moment from "Confined", "Paths Unknown", and "Shadows of Tantiss" . Buckle up, as the three episodes come in around 90 minutes in total, which means you are in for a full 2.5 hour recap and review from Julian and Rachel, as the melancholy journey toward the series finale begins. Fortunately each step (episode) on that journey so far has been up to standard. This premiere brings back the gorgeous look and feel from Lucasfilm Animation and the consistently strong storytelling to setup what looks to be an exciting final season. With the board now set it's time to tune in each week to see how this all comes together. We're betting it'll end with a well deserved bang. You know Wrecker wouldn't have it any other way.
