When we hear the word “codependent,” we often picture someone clinging to toxic relationships or constantly rescuing others. But the brilliant psychotherapist and boundary expert Terri Cole challenges this idea, revealing how capable, competent, and successful people can struggle with codependent patterns too, just hidden under the mask of over-functioning and over-investing in people's lives. Doing it all? That's the problem. In this episode, Terri shares how our deep desire for peace and control can drive us to do too much for others—emotionally, mentally, and physically— even at the cost of our own well-being. This conversation is a loving nudge to pause and ask: “What am I doing for others that they could be doing for themselves?” We explore how stepping out of this “handle-it-all” mindset isn't just freeing—it's life-changing. Do you often feel exhausted, resentful, or underappreciated in your relationships? In this episode, Gabe Howard and licensed psychotherapist Terri Cole explore the complexities of codependency, including its less-talked-about form: “high functioning codependency.” Terri shares practical tools like the “resentment inventory” to identify unhealthy relational patterns and explains how overgiving can be an unconscious attempt to control chaos. You'll also learn how societal pressures, especially on women, play a role in this dynamic and how setting boundaries can lead to healthier, more fulfilling connections. Whether you're managing relationships with friends, family, or colleagues, this episode will help you understand the line between healthy care and codependent behaviors. If you're tired of saying yes when you want to say no or struggling to let others help you, this is a must-listen conversation. “I coined the phrase high functioning codependency because my clients were these highly capable women, in particular, who did not identify with sort of the old school, Melody Beattie, “Codependent No More,” it's enabling an addict. That's all it is, basically. They're like dependent? I'm not dependent on squat. Everyone's dependent on me. I'm making all the money. I'm making all the decisions. I'm kind of the boss around here, so I can't be codependent, which is not true.” ~Terri Cole To learn more -- or read the transcript -- visit the official episode page. Terri Cole is back for her 7th appearance—yes, 7th—to dive into high-functioning codependency and boundaries. Her latest book, Too Much: A Guide to Breaking the Cycle of High-Functioning Codependency, is a game-changer and I am thrilled to welcome Terri back to the show! Together we unpack the myth of what codependency is—especially for high-achieving women—and give us a clear picture of high-functioning codependency (HFC). We're talking about things like auto advice-giving and running everyone else's life at the expense of your sanity. Terri and I also break down tools such as resentment inventory and the art of detachment (she explains what these are - don't worry!). And we also talk about boundaries, of course! Specifically how healthy boundaries aren't about shutting people out; they're about letting yourself breathe. What you'll hear in this episode: What is high-functioning codependency and how does it show up? (6:11) Where it all begins: understanding root causes and the need for control (17:38) Mastering the art of detachment without losing the connection (23:58) The secret to setting boundaries that actually work (27:49) Resentment inventory: your tool for spotting burnout and over-giving (33:30) Resources:

Terri is a licensed psychotherapist and relationship expert. She is the author of ‘Boundary Boss' and ‘Too Much'. This is the third time Terri has joined us on the podcast! The first time was to speak about cheating, the second was to speak about boundaries and today Terri is joining us to unpack codependence! But, not the standard idea of what codependency is. Today we speak about what Terri refers to as ‘high functioning codependence' and how we are able to recognise when we are doing ‘too much' for other people, and need to prioritise ourselves more. Spoiler, none of us identified as being codependent… until we learnt what high functioning codependency looked like and the alarm bells RANG! We speak about: High functioning codependency isn't what we typically think of a a ‘codependent person' They're highly capable, the person everyone depends on, the problem solver, the ‘fixer' Resentment inventories! We all need to identify where we are ‘over giving' and ‘over functioning' Being hyper independent, “I got it” and not wanting to ask for help or owing other people anything How it all contributes to burnout and cognitive overloadDo you identify with any of these labels? They might be new to you!-approval seeking, -auto fixing/auto accommodator-self sacrificing-hyper helping You can listen to Terri's previous episodes with us here: People Pleasers Anonymous - Better Boundaries and Once A Cheater, Are They Always A Cheater? We're so glad she did, because Terri has gone on to become an expert in boundaries and relationships and she has a gift for taking complex psychological concepts and making them super easy to understand so you can take action and make positive changes. We got a real taste of that in this interview, where Terri gives us a masterclass in what boundaries are, why they're important, why so many of us have no idea how to set them or communicate them and she gives us the tools and language to become a boundary boss. Terri shares how it all goes back to childhood and the boundary blueprint we grew up with. We also get to hear about her new book Too Much, which is about breaking the cycle of high-functioning codependency, which Terri explains to us in simple terms. “Expect that you're going to get pushback from them, because you will,” says Terri Cole, about what can happen when establishing boundaries with others. Terri is a licensed psychotherapist and author of “Boundary Boss.” Together with host Dr. Z, they delve into the critical aspects of setting boundaries and managing interactions with a narcissistic parent. Terri defines boundaries as personal rules of engagement that communicate to others what behaviors you are willing, and not willing, to tolerate. Alongside Dr. Z, they explore the common challenges of setting boundaries, including the difficulty of maintaining them in the face of pushback. Terri also introduces a unique framework for categorizing what she refers to as "boundary offenders." They are: Boundary First-Timer, Repeat Offender, and Boundary Destroyer. Terri and Dr. Z also discuss the challenges of setting boundaries with narcissistic parents and the unique approaches required to effectively manage these extremely complex relationships. Red flags and common behavior patterns of narcissistic parenting are explored, including the use of emotional blackmail and competitiveness with their children. Tune in to this episode of “Next Up: Narcissism” to gain valuable insights into how to identify narcissistic parenting dynamics, strategies to establish and maintain effective boundaries, and how to protect your own mental health while fostering authentic and healthy relationships. Quotes “Your boundaries are comprised of your preferences, your desires, your limits, and your deal-breakers—your non-negotiables. So really think about what that is, preferences, desires, limits, and deal-breakers. It's not enough to know them, which a lot of people don't even know. You have to know them and then have the ability to clearly and concisely communicate them when you so choose.” (02:54 | Terri Cole) “This is what makes having healthy boundaries so complicated for people because even if you do spend enough time on yourself to know what your preferences are, knowing how to set a limit with someone else can be very challenging, because we're all raised and praised to be self-abandoning codependents.” (03:22 | Terri Cole) “The reason why boundaries are broken up into the categories that they are, according to me, is because they don't all carry the same weight.” (09:00 | Terri Cole) Links Connect with Terri Cole: terricole.com/workshop terricole.com/fatherwound https://boundarybossbook.com/ https://www.instagram.com/terricole/ Connect with Dr. Jaime Zuckerman: https://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/ https://www.zgrouptherapy.com/ https://www.instagram.com/dr.z_psychologist/ https://www.tiktok.com/@dr.z_psychologist Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

What Drives Terri Cole. Terri is my expert on Boundaries from the previous episode and the message of her new book, Boundary Boss-The Essential Guide to Talk True, Be Seen and (Finally) Live Free, is our muse for this series. This is where I walk through the seven key areas of life and ask her about her values and motives and her daily habits around them. As you can imagine, we came back over and over to the topic of boundaries and how Terri works to integrate what she preaches and teaches into the everyday practices of her life. Along with her book, Boundary Boss, check out her popular podcast, The Terri Cole Show. The Self Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches.
