The "Skip Intro" button first got introduced to us through Netflix in 2017, and, I know, a lot of people use it – including me. But, if I can get into old-man, back-in-my-day mode for a second, I have so much fondness for the opening theme music for so many shows. It's a chance to set the mood for everything that you're about to see. One of the intros that I never skip is the animated opening title sequence for Only Murders in the Building, which is a Hulu show that debuted in August 2021, and now is in its third season. It was created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, and it stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. The three of them play neighbors who live in the same building in New York, and they're all obsessed with the same true crime podcast. And then when someone in their building gets murdered, they decide to start their own true crime podcast, and try and solve the mystery of who the killer is. For this episode, I talked to the show's composer, Siddhartha Khosla, about the show's theme music. Coming up, you'll hear a voice memo that Siddhartha recorded before he'd even heard about the show, which then led to a demo that you'll hear, and eventually, the final theme. The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe real star gates. Yes, star gates that actually exist on earth. Also, some that exist not on earth. Plus some that exist, around the earth. Full disclosure, star gates are legitimately scientifically possible and actually, they do exist. We do a sweep of the world debating which earthly structures may be real, functioning ones (as opposed to those ones in space between the earth and the sun). Amongst all that, Moonwalker and Greybeard disclose their intentions to probe around the country in Extraterrestrial Tent. An important question is also answered - who would walk through the door of heroes? Jokes aside, could a functioning star gate explain the troubles in Iraq during the 1990's or 2003-2011? Remember, these things are legitimately not only possible, but real, they exist in nature. By the way, we definitely do know what astrology is on this show. Finally, it's a MASTODON. All that and more on this week's file.     YouTube link for History's Ancient Aliens, season 10 episode 10: https://youtu.be/ecSoMao17B0     Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/butitwasaliens   Store: https://butitwasaliens.co.uk/shop/     Probe us: Email: butitwasaliens@gmail.com Instagram @ ButItWasAliensPodcast Twitter @ ButItWasAliens Facebook: @ ButItWasAliens - join Extraterrestrial Towers     Music:  Music created via Garageband. Additional music via: https://freepd.com - thank you most kindly good people. As is often the case, a few pop culture references also snuck in during this episode. Firstly, we had the theme from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe composed by Shuki Levy, Haim Saban and Erika Lane courtesy of Mattel. Next up, we had the Superman theme song, or Superman March, composed and conducted by John Williams. We then couldn't resist sticking in a very brief snippet of the wonderful Indiana Jones theme song aka The Raiders March again composed and conducted via the talented John Williams, courtesy of Polygram, Sony Music and Colombia Records. Later, there was a snippet titled Ending Theme from the TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys composed via Joseph LoDuca and courtesy of MCA Television, Universal Television Enterprises and Studios USA Television Distribution. That led in to the Main Title Theme from Xena: Warrior Princess, another wonderful show composed via via Joseph LoDuca and courtesy of MCA Television, Universal Television Enterprises and Studios USA Television Distribution. Then not for the first time on this podcast, there was a snippet of the Main Title Theme from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, composed by Nerf Herder. Television was a wonderful thing in the 1990's. By this point you've probably realised that we got carried away with the pop culture this episode, but there was also a snippet of the theme from the Donkey Kong Country animated TV series, composed by Pure West. Here he comes BANANA SLAMMA! Finally, there was a clip from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles original animated series theme, composed by Chuck Lorre and Dennis Challen Brown. Yes, the same Chuck Lorre who went on to create Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. Thank you.

1. Main Title Theme 1'29” 2. Siblings 0'57” 3. Morning Swim 0'55” 4. Slot Canyon 1'40” 6. Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music

Welcome to another episode of the continuing series of film, TV and video game composer interviews on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO NETWORK. Carlos Rafael Rivera is an EMMY Award-winning composer for film and television. A protégé of Randy Newman, he earned a DMA in Composition at USC’s Thornton School, where he studied with Donald Crockett and Stephen Hartke. As a guitarist, he has performed onstage as opening act for The Who at the Hollywood Bowl; recorded studio sessions for Island/Def Jam, and Universal Records; and had songs featured on NETFLIX’ FIREFLY LANE, ABC’s SCRUBS, MTV, and VH-1. As a composer, Rivera has a unique ability to incorporate a large diversity of musical influences into his captivating compositions, which reflect his multi-cultural upbringing in Central America and the United States. He has served as Composer-in-Residence with the Miami Symphony Orchestra and was a musical consultant for “Invitation to World Literature,” an educational series funded by the Annenberg Foundation and produced by WGBH and is a sought out guest composer and lecturer throughout the globe. He is also Assistant Professor and Director of the Media Writing and Production Program at the acclaimed Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, Carlos first met Oscar-nominated film/TV maker Scott Frank over 15 years ago when Scott responded to an ad for music lessons that Carlos had posted at a local Pasadena music store. What started as guitar lessons grew into a years-long friendship, and eventually led to an amazing collaborative partnership beyond the composer’s wildest dreams. Their first collaboration was on the action-drama feature, A Walk Among the Tombstones, starring Liam Neeson. Carlos went on to score Scott’s western drama series GODLESS, for which he won a Primetime Emmy for his "Main Title Theme" and also earned a nomination for his score. Their third and latest collaboration is the Netflix limited series THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT. The psychological drama series is based on the novel of the same name by Walter Tevis and follows an orphan in late-1950s Kentucky named Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) who discovers she has an incredible talent for chess. In October 2020, for the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO NETWORK, Jason Drury talked to Carlos Rafael Rivera via Zoom at his home in Miami, Florida. During the interview, they talked extensively about his score for THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT, his working relationship with Scott Frank and of his other two collaborations with Frank; A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES and GODLESS. Also during the show, you will be hearing music from all 3 productions but extensively from The Queen Gambit, without doubt, one of the best scores of 2020. The Creative Arts Emmys, a two-night affair celebrating the technical achievements of the television season such as lighting, editing and cinematography, are this weekend - September 14th and 15th. I am joined by returning champ Amanda Spears on the Creative Arts Emmy winner prediction podcast. The Creative Arts Emmys are also the home of five of the biggest awards of the Emmys: the four Guest Acting categories and Reality/Competition Host. We start the podcast analyzing the guest categories (Can Bradley Whitford win again? Will Adam Sandler be an Emmy-winning actor? Will Phylicia Rashad finally take it?) and that Reality/Host contest. RuPaul Charles stands a very good chance of tying Survivor's Jeff Probst for a 4th win here for RuPaul's Drag Race. We also tackle categories that are often bellwethers for what is going to happen the week after at the Primetime Emmy Awards. Namely, the Casting categories. Casting for a Limited Series is going to be a tough fight between Chernobyl, Fosse/Verdon and When They See Us, one of many between these three nomination giants. Casting for a Drama Series should easily go to Game of Thrones as part of its inevitable sweep (keep an eye out for a GOT article from Amanda, who correctly predicted it would hit 32 nominations, on its potential wins). But it's Casting for a Comedy Series that gives us trouble. Veep won this three times in a row on its way to Comedy Series wins. In its absence last year, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won. But we also have huge Emmy hits Barry and Fleabag. Who will win and will that win correlate to a Comedy Series win? The four costume categories (Contemporary, Period, Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Variety, Reality or Competition) and several music categories (Music & Lyrics, Main Title Theme, Score for Series and Limited Series) make up the rest of our Creative Arts Emmy winner predictions. We'll be doing a Primetime Emmy winner predictions podcast just after the Creative Arts Emmys are held this weekend. This podcast runs with music. Opening: HBO's Chernobyl, episode "Please Remain Calm" Closing: "Mein Herr" from FX's Fosse/Verdon

Last week, Netflix released the fifth season of BoJack Horseman. I wanted to revisit this episode about the show’s Main Title Theme, which was written by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, and his uncle, Ralph Carney, who passed away unexpectedly in December 2017. BoJack Horseman is a Netflix original series, an animated comedy about a washed up 90s sitcom star who's trying to figure out his life and career without drowning in self-loathing and existential despair. It won the 2016 Critics Choice award for best animated series. The theme song for the show was created by Patrick Carney, who is one half of The Black Keys, and his uncle, Ralph Carney, a multi-instrumentalist who has worked artists like Tom Waits, St Vincent, The B-52s, Galaxie 500, and a lot more. But the track wasn't written for the show, originally; it was just something that Patrick and Ralph made without knowing what it was for. In this episode, the two break down how the song was created, and how it went from their long-distance collaboration to become a TV theme song. songexploder.com/bojack-horseman

Composer Jeff Beal deconstructs the main title theme music to the Netflix original series House of Cards. The show has been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Original Main Title Theme and Outstanding Music Composition. The show was adapted from a British series of the same name by writer Beau Willimon, and director and executive producer David Fincher. Jeff talks about his collaborative process with Fincher, and how they found the mood and musical palette for the show and its theme, and how it changed from season one to season two. A word of warning: if you haven’t watched the first season, there are spoilers about how that season ends.
