#562: More than 90 percent of people who ask to get their credit card annual fee reduced are successful. Yet most people never ask.  Why? They assume the answer will be no. Matt Schultz, the author of “Ask Questions, Save Money, Make More,” joins us to explain the psychology and tactics behind successful negotiation.  The key insight: companies want to keep your business. Banks, employers, and service providers invest in long-term relationships because it's more profitable than constantly finding new customers.  This gives you more leverage than you might think. For credit cards, Schultz points out that calling the retention department directly (rather than general customer service) often leads to better results. He shares his own experience of getting his $600 annual fee cut in half just by making a yearly call. With mortgage negotiations, Schultz suggests getting quotes from 3-5 lenders on the same day, since rates change frequently. A quarter-point rate reduction on a $360,000 mortgage saves $20,000 over the life of the loan. The fees themselves can differ by $5,000 between lenders. When it comes to workplace negotiations, Schultz recommends keeping a weekly log of your accomplishments. Note both your regular duties and times you went above and beyond. This creates a strong foundation for salary discussions. The most effective negotiations frame requests as win-win scenarios. Instead of just asking for tuition reimbursement, explain how additional education will help you contribute more to the company. Rather than demanding a lower rent, offer to sign a longer lease that reduces the landlord's vacancy risk. Schultz emphasizes building relationships during negotiations. The person at the call center has likely dealt with angry customers all day. Being pleasant and making a human connection can lead to better outcomes. The interview also covers negotiating with family members about money, choosing when to negotiate versus pay full price (like at charity shops or with small businesses), and how to time requests effectively.  The common thread: success comes from understanding the other party's interests and finding ways to align them with your own. This episode will show you how to save hundreds — or thousands — in your regular spending, simply by asking.  Timestamps: Note: Timestamps will vary on individual listening devices based on dynamic advertising run times. Key Takeaways: Retail Delivery Trends Matt Schultz is Vice President of Logistic Partnerships at OneRail, an Orlando-based last mile transportation visibility solution providing shippers with Amazon-level dependability and speed. In the podcast interview, Joe and Matt discuss retail delivery trends and OneRail's delivery fulfillment platform that has an integrated coast-to-coast courier network of 10 million drivers. 3 retail delivery trends discussed: The marketplace problem – the marketplaces that specialize in retail delivery and pick-up service (usually groceries) are not good for retailers because they: Define and own the customer relationship and all the data, instead of the retailer. Compete directly with the retailers and may entice customers to try other retailers. Charge fees that may cause the retailer to lose money on the transaction. Ownership of the customer, customer data, and the customer experience is increasingly important and retailers need a delivery partner that will consistently execute the retailers vision, while respecting the retailer's relationship with their customers. To provide the customer experience for both the shipper (retailer) and the customer, a technology orchestration platform is a must have. OneRail's orchestration platform connect shippers to vetted couriers in real time. OneRail provides 100% visibility into the delivery flow, but it's way more than a visibility platform. With the right mix of leading technology, dependable couriers, and a vigilant customer experience (CX) team, customers get the ability to change delivery outcomes in real time. The OneRail logistics platform is modular, with the flexibility to serve as a standalone platform or integrate with an existing TMS. A lot of radio personalities are initially attracted to the medium because of the music. But some hosts, like Sylvia Alvarado, go far beyond a passing interest. As the midday host on KOMP 92.3 in Vegas, she's had incredible interviews with some of the biggest stars in rock music: Slash, Pat Carney from The Black Keys, Zakk Wylde, and Matt Schultz from Cage The Elephant, just to name a few. She's also a musician herself- She's sung the national anthem at games for the Vegas Aviators and the Golden Knights. Sadly, there isn't much footage out there, but when you consider that you only here about anthem singers when they mess up - this may be a good thing. (We do have a clip on our episode page)In this episode, Sylvia and I run through her history with music and radio, from her beginnings as a student at UNLV and a humble intern at KOMP all the way to her current position as the midday host. Even if it seems like she's a natural fit for radio, she had her fair share of struggles. We go over how she finally gained confidence in herself after 2 years (!) on the air, and how she tackled a few broadcasts in Spanish. We also go over the fierceness of creating and running promotions in Vegas, which is pretty much the global capital of promoting things. If you're listening from Vegas, you can hear Sylvia from 10am to 3pm on 92.3 KOMP. If you're not, you can also listen live on their website. (Yes even you Canada)To connect with Sylvia and learn more about her, you can follow her on Instagram and LinkedIn.Click Here for a Transcript of the show. Also a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service.
