We're so excited to share about two bran new events happening in October. If you'd like to learn various ways to discover, subscribe to, and listen to podcasts on a variety of platforms and through multiple methods, we're offering a four-week event packed with demos and helpful info. Are you frustrated trying to manually put a podcast feed on your specialized player? Are you wondering what a feed even is? Do you want to know what exactly to say to your voice assistant to bring up a podcast? Curious about players for Android? We'll cover these subjects and so much more, plus have a full week for questions at the end of the event. Read all the details and register here for only $34. If your dream is to create your own podcast, we have a six-week event coming up on that topic beginning in mid October. From planning your podcast, to discovering how to host it, to marketing it and inviting guests to interview, you'll learn all that and more. Plus there's a full week at the end dedicated to your questions. Between us we have decades of experience hosting successful podcasts, and we're thrilled to share with you. Activate this link to learn more and register your seat for $69. Thinking you may wish to join both events? You'll save $10 if you register for both at the same time, or if you buy the listening to podcasts event and then return to purchase the podcast creation event. One cool thing about these events is that both have associated mailing lists, so we can begin getting to know each other prior to the event start date, and you can really customize the structure and topics covered. In other words, you can really make these events your own. Our main topic this time is the importance of knowing your local surroundings. When Kim moved to Buffalo, she began exploring the area online, and found a delicious meal delivery service, Eat Rite Foods, that we discuss briefly. But primarily, we talk about why it's so important to know your area, especially when traveling. This is even important when using a GPS app such as BlindSquare. We share some stories about helpful features found in GPS apps, and also when they aren't really so helpful. We hope you enjoy this interesting discussion. As always, thanks for listening!

We told you we had two treats for you this week... So, here we are, weirdly, on a Thursday! Steven and Robin return, and they've brought back Andy after his day off on Tuesday to go through the overflowing email inbox. So coming up on this show: Tackling Microsoft Teams, BlindSquare and accurate mapping via GPS, iPads, Audio Description levels, and of course we give another mention to the Turbo Scrub... it's getting so many mentions I think we should start getting advertising money! Also, for all you geeky audio fans out there that always ask about how we record the podcast, especially during lockdown, Andy, Steven and Robin detail what equipment they use to make the show sound so silky smooth, from microphones, mixing desks, audio interfaces, conference call software and audio recording software. As we covered a few more emails this week, now would be a good time to get your questions and comments in! techtalk@rnib.org.uk is the email address. Chat to you all next Tuesday!

Hi Mosen at Largers. Many will be tuning in for Google's big event. They'll reveal the Pixel 4 this coming week and there'll be other things unveiled too. A listener asks me to talk about anything I'd like to see announced. Are you a Mac user looking forward to a greater variety of apps? It appears Apple may have seriously dropped the accessibility ball with its new Catalyst project. We hear some inside information on Apple's new series about a world full of blind people called "See", and get confirmation that all Apple TV Plus series will contain audio description. I give you my recommendation for the BBC Radio 4 Feedback podcast and tell you why I find it so entertaining. Change in something as fundamental as the way you read can be disconcerting. A listener questions whether the Unified English Braille code is advancing the cause of Braille. A listener seeks advice, is it safe to upgrade an iPhone 6s to iOS 13? Is speed faster, slower or roughly the same? We're not shy of tackling the controversial questions on this show. Oh boy! A listener wants to know which is better, Apple Music or Spotify? I give you my take and you're welcome to share yours. We hear from a listener who owns a WeWalk Smart Cane. I'd love to hear from others who have one of these to find out how it's working out for you. Google Maps has enhanced walking directions for blind people who live in the US or Japan, and BlindSquare now has tight Aira integration. We discuss techniques for keeping your new phone battery in top shape. Now I know I have a hearing impairment, but I think I heard via Twitter that October is meet the blond month. I think that's right. So my favourite blonde, Bonnie Mosen, is on the show. Bonnie and I have a good old rant about the insulting inappropriateness of postal ballots in elections without any accessible alternative. And just how lucky am I really?
Airacast Episode 18 It’s Cool to Be Blind October is a time to celebrate! In this episode we take a look at Disability Employment Awareness with Explorer Paul Merrell . Greg Stilson, Vice President for Product and Danielle Toby, Product Designer here at Aira tell us about two exciting new features, integration with Blind Square and our Invite A Friend program. The Agent spotlight shines this time around on Mark Lawrence.
On this episode of the NavigatingBlindness podcast we chat with members of our IT team. During the podcast, the IT team enlightens us on the high tech accessibility solutions implemented at Bosma Enterprises, BlindSquare, which is an app that uses strategically placed beacons to help people who are blind navigate unfamiliar territory and other apps that can help people who are blind in their everyday lives.
This session was all about GPS apps to help you navigate your world. We discussed widely available options like Google Maps and Apple Maps as well as more specialized apps like BlindSquare, Lazarillo and Nearby Explorer, which were specifically designed for those with visual impairment.
Iän merkitys vähenee, kun jokainen meistä saa supervoimia, lisäaisteja ja ennustajan kykyjä suoraan puhelimesta. Jani Halme ja Tomi Saarinen löytävät Digisessä iltapäivässä esimerkkejä tavoista, joilla yli 70-vuotiaiden elämät myllääntyvät uuteen uskoon digitaalisuuden myötä. Vieraana studiossa on Blindsquare-sovelluksen kehittänyt Ilkka Pirttimaa, jolla on vakaa teoria siitä, miksi lisätty todellisuus onnistuu paremmin äänen kuin kuvan välityksellä.
Show Summary: In this That Blind Tech Show Extra, Brian Fischler joins Jeff Thompson in the Blind Abilities studio and unveils the new Bose Frames. The Frames are a True wireless headset built into sunglasses. The sound comes from the sunglass legs and do not obstruct your ambient sounds. This may be just the ticket for listening to GPS or information while you are navigating the outdoors. With complete control available with one button on the right side, you can pair, play, invoke Siri and much more, although the volume is controlled by your Bluetooth connected phone. Brian uses the Bose Frames throughout the entire podcast while connected to the Zoom meeting I set up from Blind Abilities Headquarters. Other than the digital effect from Zoom, the Bose Frames sounded really clear and I was impressed. At $199, the Bose Frames seem like a decent option for navigating and listening to information and with the upcoming AI feature from Bose, this form factor just may be a giant step into the future. Imagine looking at a building and having Blind Square tell you what business or location is there. Interesting times and this wearable seems to be just the right fit for the BVI community. Well, with 2 Frame options, Alto (large) and Rondo (small), there is something for everyone. Contact: Thank you for listening! Using the GPS (Global Positioning System), blind people can now obtain detailed information about their environment with the aid of smartphones, note takers and stand-alone devices. But the system is unsuitable for providing detailed navigation information in-doors.The developers of the popular BlindSquare iOS app are seeking to solve that problem with a system they call BPS, the BlindSquare Positioning System. In his book “iOS 7 Without the Eye”, Jonathan Mosen predicted that iBeacons had the potential to dramatically improve the information blind people receive about the built environment, if a developer took the technology and used it for that purpose. BlindSquare have made that possibility an impressive reality.Jonathan Mosen speaks with Thomas Bryan of the Blind Foundation in New Zealand about the Foundation's work with the Wellington Regional Council to facilitate a comprehensive roll-out of BPS in Wellington's central business di [...]
