This week Kevin and I interviewed Sage Burgener. Sage started coaching at a young age due to her exposure to weightlifting through her father Mike Burgener. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining athleticism as we age and how Olympic weightlifting can contribute to overall fitness and longevity. She focuses on non-PR victories and attitude when coaching athletes, encouraging them to be proud of their effort and approach to the barbell. Sage believes that mental resilience is developed through acknowledging and working on our shortcomings and acting the way we want to feel before we actually feel that way. In this conversation, Sage discusses the importance of mindset and overcoming fear in Olympic weightlifting. She emphasizes the need to approach lifts with confidence and bravery, recognizing that the weight on the bar is only a temporary challenge. Sage also highlights the significance of footwork in weightlifting, explaining how proper foot positioning can improve stability and overall performance. She acknowledges the individuality of athletes and the importance of finding the right shoe and training balance for each person. Finally, Sage shares information about the Bergener strength courses and the Ultra Strength business she and her boyfriend have launched. 00:00 The Influence of Early Exposure to Weightlifting 08:16 The Role of Olympic Weightlifting in Overall Fitness and Longevity 12:01 Starting the Olympic Weightlifting Journey 23:18 Developing Mental Resilience in Competitive Sports 28:44 Overcoming Fear and Building Confidence in Olympic Weightlifting 30:34 The Importance of Footwork in Weightlifting 36:40 Finding the Right Shoe and Training Balance 46:07 How to become a successful hybrid athlete --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coachingyourcoaching/message

When I retired from teaching high school last year, I worried about losing all of the social interaction that I got from teaching 150 students daily. So, I secured an adjunct position teaching aspiring educators at Muskingum University. I also teach refugees how to speak English. These teaching gigs have been a joy, but it’s a different life because I’m only teaching 3 days a week–which is also a joy. My new-found freedom affords me the opportunity to explore, grow, and take risks. I also want to keep expanding my human capital. Relationships make life worth living and I love forging new ones. One area of growth that I’ve been exploring this year is fitness. I have so much more time to workout now and I love it. I researched ways that I could challenge myself physically and grow myself socially. At the end of my exploration, I concluded that I should join a Crossfit gym. Crossfit significantly challenges you physically and promotes community. Crossfit gyms are highly social places. That was exactly what I was looking for. I found an excellent local gym–Crossfit Polaris . Kristi Eramo is the owner and a prominent games athlete. I love her teaching style and was excited to learn from her and the other coaches at Polaris. Unfortunately, the Covid 19 Pandemic short-circuited my plans. After just 3 introductory classes, the gym was forced to close. I was left high and dry. So, I got busy coaching myself. I pulled the workout of the day (WOD) off the Crossfit site and started doing them. I watched training videos and listened to podcasts hoping to improve my olympic lifting form. Lifting is a key part to Crossfit. I decided that I was going to take one of the most challenging olympic lifts–the snatch, and learn how to do it. Here’s a description of a snatch:The snatch can be described as jumping a barbell through a range of motion and receiving it into an overhead squat. And here’s a brief video if you’d like to see a young woman perform one expertly. You have to be strong, mobile, explosive, coordinated, and courageous to perform this lift. I’m starting from ground zero, but I’m determined to learn this lift. When I searched for Olympic lifting techniques on Google, YouTube, and podcasts, one name kept materializing–Mike Burgener. Now all of you who’re inclined to exit this podcast because you’re not interested in learning about performing an olympic snatch, stop yourself. This program is not about lifting, it’s about teaching. And Mike Burgener is one of this nation’s premier educators. Here’s a bit about Coach Burgener:He has a BA from Notre Dame and played on their 1966 National Championship Football Team.He has an MS from the University of Kentucky in Exercise Physiology, where he was also the strength coach. He was a captain in the Marine Corps. He’s a Senior International Weightlifting Coach for the United States. He’s considered the Godfather of Olympic Lifting for Crossfit. And for decades, Coach Burgener was a proud public educator–teaching high school physical education in California.I got to know Coach Burgener because I sent him an email asking a question. The next thing I knew, I was in his Level 1 weightlifting class. This is a special man and he’s going to talk about his mentors and challenge you to not only listen to the ones you already have but to be open to new ones.
He was a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. Coach Mike Burgener is known globally as the head coach of CrossFit Weightlifiting. He runs Mike's Gym out of his garage, where he regularly works out with his crew of geezers and provides Olympic weightlifting coaching to athletes of all ages. The legendary "Coach B" Mike Burgener has been coaching weightlifting for more than 50 years. He has been named “Coach of the Year” by United States Weightlifting and is a Level 5 senior International Weightlifting Coach. It was an unlikely friendship, however, that led Burgener to CrossFit. “Greg Glassman [the founder of CrossFit] calls me up,” recalls Burgener. “He asked if I was the guy holding courses for Olympic weightlifting and I said ‘yes.' He said, ‘I’d like to bring my athletes down at this gym that I have in Santa Cruz, and I’d like for you to get them certified for USA Weightlifting.” This was 2005, the early years of CrossFit, but Olympic lifts were already at the core of the workout’s philosophy. The rest, as we say it, was history. CrossFit Weightlifting exploded. (Read more here.) He is a graduate of Notre Dame and obtained his MS degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Kentucky. He was a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. He runs a Regional Training Center for USA Weightlifting from his home in Bonsall, California. He has coached the Junior World Women's Weightlifting Team (which I was a member of in 1997!). His son and daughter, Sage and Casey, are also notable lifters. The idea that there are so many experts out there is mind boggling. All you have to do is scroll through instagram and you will find hundreds if not thousands of “experts”. No true expert calls themselves such. I have never heard of Louie Simmons, Mike Burgener, or even Albert Einstein call themselves experts so how could there possibly be this many? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/matthew931/support
Mike Burgener is known by most as Coach B. After excelling at multiple sports in high school, Coach B headed to Notre Dame to play football. This is where he began what would be the most influential relationship of his life, weightlifting with Father Lange. He went on to get an MS degree from the University of Kentucky and was a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. But Coach B's passion for Olympic Weightlifting is what he has focused on for over 50 years as an athlete, coach, and mentor. He is a Level 5 Senior International Weightlifting Coach, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, and got involved with CrossFit early on as their weightlifting SME. He runs Mike's Gym, the 5th CrossFit affiliate, out of his garage with a special emphasis on training "The Geezers". He has been named coach of the year by United States Weightlifting but maybe more importantly is considered family by the athletes he coaches. For more info on Coach B, check out his website here, or follow him on Instagram and Facebook.

Vince Lombardi, Geno Auriemma & John Wooden are generally recognized by all as the most legendary coaches on the planet. On Episode 178 of the Doc and Jock Podcast we are lucky enough to be joined by one of their coaching equals, Mike Burgener, who is regarded as the Godfather of American Weightlifting. After college Coach B joined the Marine Crop. afterwards he stayed in SoCal where he became the US National Team Coach which earned him a Level 5 status within USA Weightlifting. To help further the sport of Weightlifting Coach B founded the CrossFit Weightlifting program which helps train CrossFitters in the lifts. (If you want to learn more about Mike's life watch this great piece http://daily.barbellshrugged.com/full-depth-005/ that Chris Moore of Barbell Shrugged did) On this Episode we have a great conversation that covers the span of Mike's life in coaching. It wasn’t that long ago that we didn’t have iPhones in our pockets, let alone access to the world’s information at the click of a button. Back in the day, coaches and athletes had to figure shit out on their own. Nowadays, the fitness industry is growing faster than ever, and with that comes new innovations and knowledge around training. That is mainly due to the fact that coaches and athletes are communicating and sharing their experience more and more. We wanted to hear from one of the top coaches in the game on this topic, so we headed over to Bonsall, CA to visit Mike Burgener. Coach B has watched this evolution occur and has been apart of some of the biggest evolutions in the sport of weightlifting and strength training. In this episode, Coach B shares his insights into the fitness industry as it is today, and tells stories of what it was like in the beginning. We talk about why most athletes who want to go from pretty good to competitive need to start focusing on training their weaknesses. Mike shares tactics and his philosophy around getting strong, the coaches that he works with, and how he gets his athletes to the next level. If you want to learn how to break through your plateau’s and start understanding how to train your weaknesses, you need to drop in for this one. Enjoy the show, Mike
I want you to meet Ray Regno. We met Ray on a Wednesday at Mike Burgener's gym as he was off to the side coaching an athlete, teaching how to activate the lats in the overhead squat. As you'll soon learn, Ray is a really smart coach. He is one of those coaches who has a drill or movement for everything. We got to talking to Ray and were impressed with just how knowledgable he was about movement. The coolest part is that Ray is mostly self-taught. Through an obsession with the CrossFit® Journal, observing and learning from good coaches, Ray has been able to rapidly up-level his coaching game in a very short time. In this episode we talk about the value of progressions in teaching movement, how to speed up your growth as a coach, and why you should hold your athletes more accountable for how they move. PS: To all the coaches (and aspiring coaches) out there, this one is a must listen. Drop us a line in the comments below and let us know what you found to be most valuable in this episode. PPS: Give Ray a follow on the Insta- @rayregno ...he shares some great coaching content ...and if you ever make it out to San Diego, his gym, CrossFit Stronghold is a good place to add to your bucket list.

Juli Bauer: Well hey there happy people! This is Juli Bauer, the creator of www.PaleOMG.com. Just a little forewarning; this podcast has strong language; sometimes sexual content; and everything worth listening to. So if you aren’t a fan of sometimes PG-13, maybe even R rated content, I would move on. I’ve just got to give that little up front intro nowadays, since people don’t understand what explicit means. So there you go. It’s right there, put it out there for you. So anyways, this is Juli Bauer from www.PaleOMG.com. If you don’t know what that website is; good on ya! But go to my website and hang out there. And I don’t know how you found my podcast in the first place. But that’s f*cking awesome if you did. So this is Juli Bauer. I’m here to chat with you guys about whatever the hell is going on in my brain; and there’s a lot. This week, I’ve been in a bad f*cking mood! I cannot rid myself of this mood. And I am pretty damn good at f*cking getting rid of that type of personality flaw. Because I’m not a person who likes to just dwell on a bad mood; no thank you. But you know, I’m in a little quarrel with my husband; quarrel if you will. Long story short, I’m not going to go into the details, because I like being married, but I was supposed to go to Bali, and the trip has been postponed, and it’s slightly, partly my husband’s fault. And I love him, but I truly hate him right now. So I can’t really rid myself of that hatred; hopefully some day. I’ll move on from it. But the Bali trip that was supposed to come next month has been postponed. Hopefully it’s just postponed, it’s not just completely gone.
