William Roth, Founder and Artistic Director of the St. Louis Actors Studio, stopped by to talk with Nancy about the upcoming season of St. Louis Actors Studio, which is housed in the Gaslight Theater.  William Roth William Roth's acting career began in 1972 at the Theatre Guild of Webster Groves—where his dad had acted in the mid-60s—in a performance of South Pacific, in which he had a horrible case of stage fright, refused to sing and choose instead to dance behind the curtain. Twenty years later, after a six-year stint in the Marines and other distractions, he moved back to St. Louis from California and performed in a student-directed one-act festival at the University of Missouri-St Louis. He then returned to the Theatre Guild of Webster Groves to get his picture on the wall with his father, playing Clive in Alan Ayckbourn's Season's Greetings. Over the past 20 years he has appeared in countless Shakespeare productions, including: Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, Comedy of Errors, Titus Andronicus, Cymbeline, As You Like It, Romeo and Juliet, Richard III, The Winter's Tale, King Lear, Troilus and Cressida and Antony and Cleopatra. The only other time it topped the table was at the 2008 Games in Beijing. After only returning to the Olympic fold in 1984, the country has had a remarkable run of success, finishing in the top four at every summer Games since Barcelona in 1992. While sports is seen as an important demonstration of national pride on the world stage, China's state-driven sports system is also a way in which the government maintains internal order. He is the owner of St Louis Property Management, taking care of many of St Louis landlords' rental portfolios, and he also owns Veteran Landlord, a company he created to help landlords across the country run their rentals more efficiently and be more profitable. Aside from previously serving our country, Edward has a BSc in Astrophysics from the University of Missouri-St Louis and is a keynote speaker on the subject of real estate investing. In today's episode, Edward joins me today to shine some light on Turnkey Investing and what this means in REI. He stresses the importance of having a property manager involved at the earliest stages of purchasing a turnkey property and what you should be looking for when finding a reputable one. We discuss the areas in the country where Turnkey will thrive and how you can conduct your due diligence checks via Google, Facetime, or Skype. Edward also reveals one of the biggest mistakes would-be Turnkey investors make when they think they have acquired an on-going rental without including essential maintenance or property management factors and how you can avoid this. "My own version of Turnkey means you have a property that has been renovated. Deferred maintenance has been corrected, fixed. And it actually has gotten rented at market or above market rates, ready for an investor to just simply buy it" – Edward O'Daniel "In my early days, I didn't do my due diligence, you know, with buying property and understanding some of the costs and all the other things involved. And I just don't want to see that happen to other people" – Edward O'Daniel "If you're going to buy a turnkey rental from a wholesaler or from any reputable person, get a property manager involved that's reputable" – Edward O'Daniel "Do due diligence online. If somebody has treated somebody else wrong, they're going to pop up somewhere" Edward O'Daniel This week on Flip Talk: Resources Mentioned: Connect with Edward O'Daniel: Rate, Review, Learn and Share Thanks for tuning into the FlipTalk podcast! Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp, VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast… Welcome to February - it is snowing like mad here in Pennsylvania right now -- about 8 inches so far and another 10 expected today, so as you listen to this, picture me pushing a snowblower and shoveling, since that's what I'll likely be doing as you listen.  I'll likely be listening to someone else's podcast as I do that because it would be weird if I listened to myself.  Quick thanks to Grand Canyon University, University or Arkansas, University of Florida and University of Missouri - St Louis who have welcomed me into their classrooms over the past week to share career advice with their sports management students.  Always a great thrill for me, seriously, I love speaking directly with the students and being able to answer their questions and provide help. If you are listening and you are a professor, don't be shy, reach out. If you think I can provide value to your students, I want to help.  As for content -- my speciality -- in January we busted out some amazing episodes - with a theme! Looking forward to hiring trends in the sports industry for 2021 -- Kali Franklin VP of HR at NYCFC, John Ferguson VP of People and Culture at Monumental Sports and Entertainment, Matt Resnick sports talent acquisition executive formerly at Madison Square Garden company … and we tossed in Nigel Eccles Co-founder of Fanduel, because, well, he's Nigel Eccles. It's a great month of content -- if you are new to the show, start there. Then, start looking for your targeted content. You want to work in sales? We have interviews there. Marketing, Partnership Activation, Scouting, Coaching, General Managers, Agents… you name it. We've got it. Alright -- before we get into today's question, it's time for the Stat Line - Meredith Johnson's favorite segment.  Ok, three stats, data pulls, information -- that will help you understand where we are as a sports industry, right now. We're giving you context! Stat #1 - 19,896 active available sports jobs right now. We will pass 20,000 this week. Why is this an important benchmark? Because the last time we were over 20k jobs was in early March of 2020. When Covid first started to become a reality and change the sports world.  This is huge progress, we are coming back, and that should get you energized for your search. Just to track january increases so far -- Week 1 - Sports job total jumped 8%Week 2 - Sports job total jumped 6.5%Week 3 - Sports job total jumped 4.7%Week 4 - Sports job total jumped 6.8% Total for the month of January, we at WorkInSports.com the leading job board for the sports industry, went from 15,573 active jobs...to 19,896. That's what I'm talking about.  Stat #2 - Over the lasxt week we added 2,865 new fresh jobs to the job board. Stat #3 - that is an average of over 400 new fresh opportunities every damn day of the week. Your job is out there, we'll help you find it.  Whoa that could be a tagline. Not bad.  OK, three jobs that are fresh on the job board and interesting! Yes that is subjective, because I alone determine what is considered interesting.   Job #1 -- The Athletic is hiring a Staff Editor for the NFL. TThe candidate will be involved in all the day-to-day operations, including collaborating with writers, planning, editing and publishing of content. Generate thoughtful, smart and relevant story ideas • Line edit stories from start to finish for quality, context, style, and grammarFollow best practices on headline writing and SEO optimizationKnowledge of WordPress and photo editing skills is a plus Job #2 -- Production Coordintor, Content Production -- Adidas   The Production Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Content Production Team as an integral part of the in-house creative agency. As my first guest, I’d would like to introduce Susan Brownell, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Missouri – St Louis, one of the authors of The Anthropology of Sport: Bodies, Borders, Biopolitics (University of California Press, 2018). During the course of the interview, we covered the subfield of sport anthropology, the marginalization of traditional games, the recent Caster Semenya case, and the contemporary transnationalism of sport. In The Anthropology of Sport, understandably, the authors enlighten us about what the subfield entails, how anthropology is well suited to dissect the nature of sport, and provide us with ample anecdotes and observations of the world of sport through an ‘anthropological gaze.’ The chapters are structured in a way that cover all the relevant aspects in the study of sport, including history, class, race/ethnicity, sex/gender, nationalism, and globalization. Two important additions to the field of sport studies include a chapter on sport, health, and the environment (3), as well as sport as a cultural performance (6). In the former, which can be taken as a foundational text on the subject, the history of sport medicine and non-Western perspectives on sport and the body are enlightening, with anecdotes about the history of yoga and the Falun Gong movement. In the latter, the performative turn and ritual theory are used to dissect the contemporary global sport mega-event infrastructure. In conclusion, the authors point out that “more than any other form of human activity, sport embodies some of the fundamental questions that anthropology poses” (258), and this book lives up to its lofty title. Brownell, Besnier, and Carter’s work is a new text in a yet undefined field – it may be the start of something new. If interested in the global nature of sport today, The Anthropology of Sport is a necessary read. Tom Fabian is a PhD candidate at the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario, Canada) and an assistant professor of sport management at St. Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada). His field, broadly, is the sociocultural history of sport, and he focuses on the globalization of folk games. Specifically, he is interested in the safeguarding of folk games through the UNESCO heritagization process, as well as the trend of adopting traditional games as national sports. Secondary research interests include the histories of the Universiade, volleyball, and Hungarian water polo. If you have a title to suggest for this podcast, please contact him at tfabian@uwo.ca.
