They just got back from camp last month in August, which was their fourth time at camp (third in-person). They are now both living in Boston during their gap year while they apply to medical school. Maggie is currently working as a clinical research coordinator at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Sandra is a medical assistant at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
In this episode, Adam and Budi kick of the first book club episode of the year with The Dutchman, by Amiri Baraka. We welcome Taylor Barfield to the discussion, as he joins Budi and Adam in dissecting this classic. Poet, writer, teacher, and political activist Amiri Baraka was born Everett LeRoi Jones in 1934 in Newark, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University and Howard University, spent three years in the U.S. Air Force, and returned to New York City to attend Columbia University and the New School for Social Research. Baraka was well known for his strident social criticism, often writing in an incendiary style that made it difficult for some audiences and critics to respond with objectivity to his works. Throughout most of his career his method in poetry, drama, fiction, and essays was confrontational, calculated to shock and awaken audiences to the political concerns of black Americans. For decades, Baraka was one of the most prominent voices in the world of American literature.Baraka's legacy as a major poet of the second half of the 20th century remains matched by his importance as a cultural and political leader. His influence on younger writers has been significant and widespread, and as a leader of the Black Arts movement of the 1960s Baraka did much to define and support black literature's mission into the next century. His experimental fiction of the 1960s is considered some of the most significant African-American fiction since that of Jean Toomer.________________________________________________________________________________________________Taylor Barfield is a dramaturg, writer, and theater artist from Baltimore, MD. He served as the Acting Literary Manager at Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, CT and the Literary Manager at Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ. Taylor currently works as a freelance dramaturg and consultant working with organizations such as the Guthrie, BMG, Portland Center Stage, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, and Yale Repertory Theatre. Taylor received his B.A. in Molecular/Cellular Biology and English Literature from Johns Hopkins University and is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, where he earned his M.F.A. and D.F.A. in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism. His scholarly work explores how contemporary Black American playwrights re-imagine and re-stage Black theater history. His writing has been published in Vulture, TDF Stages, and the Marginalia Review of Books. He is currently an adjunct professor at NYU Tisch.Support the show2024 Audio Play Festival submissions "Sounds of Home"If you enjoyed this week´s podcast, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts. Taking us to the cutting edge of the new frontier of medicine, a visionary biotechnologist and a pathbreaking researcher show how we can optimize our health in ways that were previously unimaginable. We are on the cusp of a major transformation in healthcare—yet few people know it. At top hospitals and a few innovative health-tech startups, scientists are working closely with patients to dramatically extend their “healthspan”—the number of healthy years before disease sets in. In The Age of Scientific Wellness, two visionary leaders of this revolution in health take us on a thrilling journey to this new frontier of medicine. Today, most doctors wait for clinical symptoms to appear before they act, and the ten most commonly prescribed medications confer little or no benefit to most people taking them. Leroy Hood and Nathan Price argue that we must move beyond this reactive, hit-or-miss approach to usher in real precision health—a form of highly personalized care they call “scientific wellness.” Using information gleaned from our blood and genes and tapping into the data revolution made possible by AI, doctors can catch the onset of disease years before symptoms arise, revolutionizing prevention. Current applications have shown startling results: diabetes reversed, cancers eliminated, Alzheimer's avoided, and autoimmune conditions kept at bay. This is not a future fantasy: it is already happening, but only for a few patients and at a high cost. It's time to make this gold standard of care more widely available. Inspiring in its possibilities, and radical in its conclusions, The Age of Scientific Wellness shares actionable insights to help you chart a course to a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life. Dr. Leroy Hood is a world-renowned scientist and recipient of the National Medal of Science in 2011. Dr. Hood co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) in 2000, served as its first President from 2000-2017 and is a Professor and Chief Strategy Officer. In 2022, Dr. Hood started Phenome Health, a non-profit dedicated to delivering value through health innovation. Dr. Nathan Price is CEO of Onegevity, a division of Thorne HealthTech. He is also an (on leave) Professor at the Institute for Systems Biology, where he and Lee Hood co-direct the Hood-Price Lab for Systems Biomedicine. Additionally, Dr. Price is an affiliate faculty at the University of Washington in the Departments of Bioengineering, Computer Science & Engineering, and Molecular & Cellular Biology. In 2019, he was selected by the National Academy of Medicine as one of their 10 Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine. Dr. Jim Heath is President and Professor at Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. Heath also has the position of Professor of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at UCLA. Formerly, he directed the National Cancer Institute-funded NSB Cancer Center, was the Elizabeth W. Gilloon Professor of Chemistry at Caltech, and served as co-director of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at UCLA until 2017. Presented by Town Hall Seattle and the Institute of Systems Biology. Are plants trying to kill you? According to Dr. Anthony Chaffee, the answer is YES! Dr. Chaffee lives what he believes, and for the past 20 years has been living an almost exclusively plant free carnivore diet. It is his assertion that most of the so-called chronic diseases we treat as doctors are caused by the food we eat, or don't eat, and can be reversed with dietary changes to a species specific diet. We dive into the history of the human diet, how the balance of protein and fat from a carnivore diet can fuel even an athlete, and the nuances of how plants are toxic and possibly harmful to humans. It is his assertion that micronutrient needs can be filled completely by eating a carefully honed Carnivore Diet. Dr Chaffee is an American medical doctor and Neurosurgical resident who, over a span of 20+ years, has researched the optimal nutrition for human performance and health. He began his University education studying Molecular & Cellular Biology with a Minor in Chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle at the age of 15, and went on to obtain his MD . He is also an All-American rugby player and a former professional athlete in both the USA and Europe. He took several years off his education for the pursuit of his rugby career and that is when he experienced first hand the incredible difference that diet makes to performance and recovery. He is host of the podcast, The Plant Free MD and guested on numerous podcasts and shows as well. He has an active presence on Instagram , where he shares his insights and latest collaborations. Hi, my name is Amy Fan; born in Canada, I moved with my family to Chandler where I learned to acclimate to the Arizona heat. I am a UA senior double majoring in Molecular Cellular Biology and Statistics Data Science with a minor in musical performance. As an undergraduate researcher, I work in the Gutenkunst lab studying mathematical models inferring recombination rates. Canonical models operate under the assumptions of neutrality, but in real life, we have plenty of mutations that are better or worse for us…So considering these is a must! Through my two years at UBRP, I have been fortunate enough to work in two different labs. As an undergraduate in the Gregorio Lab, I studied neonatal heart disease at a molecular level. Dr. Gregorio recognized my fascination with big data and supported my transition into a computational lab, which led me to the Gutenkunst Lab the following year. I am so grateful for my experience in UBRP which has opened me up to the world of computational biology, something I had not considered as Molecular Biology Major when I first joined as a sophomore. I am currently pursuing a Statistics research in graduate school and studying computational systems of biology. Outside of university, I enjoy watching movies with friends, running, and songwriting about the human experience. As co-president of Music and Medicine Club at the university, I also perform with fellow musicians at local clinics and hospitals.

Dr Chaffee is an American medical doctor, specializing in Neurosurgery, who over a span of 20 years has researched the optimal nutritional habits for athletic performance and health, and it is his assertion that most of the so called chronic diseases we treat as doctors these days are actually caused by the food we eat, or don't eat, and can be reversed easily with dietary changes. He began his University education studying Molecular & Cellular Biology with a Minor in Chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle at the age of 15, which culminated in attaining his MD from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2013. He is an All-American rugby player and a former professional player in England and America; having taken several years off from his education for sports between his undergraduate and medical degrees. He also has a background in MMA, training with the world renowned Matt Hume at AMC Kickboxing in Kirkland, Washington from the age of 14. Though he gave this up at 18 to more seriously pursue rugby, the skills and lessons he learned there served as the basis of his springboard to professional rugby, not least of which was being able to defend himself on the field when violence wasn't as well regulated in the game as it is today. Throughout his athletic career, he saw first hand the massive difference that diet made to performance and recovery, and almost accidentally came across and practiced a fully carnivorous diet from age 20 to 25, having first learned of the toxic nature of all plants at the University of Washington. Since then he has rediscovered this truth and more, and has dedicated many years and a large part of his professional practice to the study and education of diet and nutrition, and personally practices a fully carnivorous diet again today, with amazing results. He currently resides in Perth, Australia where he specializes in Neurosurgery and does private consultations and clinics in functional medicine and nutrition. Zayan Khanmohammed is a rising sophomore attending UC Berkeley majoring in Molecular/Cellular Biology and Neurobiology. Zayan and I share stories from middle school and high school and recall how we first became friends. Zayan opens about about the difficulty of merging his religious identity with his American identity and how that affected his college experience. Being in a more "cut throat environment" taught him time management skills and forced him to adapt a go-getter attitude. Zayan addresses the fears many high school students feel prior to attending college; a super informative and interesting interview! Enjoy
Lochan Shah is a medical student at Johns Hopkins passionate about the intersection of medicine, technology, and public health, and the potential for technology to improve healthcare delivery as well as patient safety and outcomes. She graduated from UC Berkeley, where she double-majored in Public Health and Molecular & Cellular Biology. At Hopkins, Lochan has led a student health consultant team in using EDCAHPS data to inform operational changes in the Johns Hopkins Hospital Emergency Department. Additionally, she has been engaged with the Martin Research Group in the development of Corrie, a digital health intervention that incorporates an iOS app, Bluetooth-enabled blood pressure cuff, and Apple Watch to guide patients through recovery after acute myocardial infarction with the goal of reducing 30-day readmission rates. Her research interests include understanding how digital health interventions can be used to empower patients, reduce healthcare costs, and improve clinical outcomes, the usability and feasibility of such interventions, and the barriers to bringing them into everyday practice. Ultimately, she hopes to leverage these experiences as well as a career as a future cardiologist to help bridge the gap between clinicians, patients, technology, and the greater healthcare system to improve healthcare.
Dr. Brandon Ryff grew up in Tempe Arizona, and attended the University of Arizona, where he graduated with dual degrees in Physiology from the College of Medicine, and Molecular & Cellular Biology from the College of Science. Upon graduation, Dr. Ryff then attended the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry. After Dental School, Dr. Ryff became an associate in a small group of privately owned dental practices in Arizona. Subsequently, this group was approached and acquired by a national DSO backed by private equity investors. This transition was a complex process that Dr. Ryff found very interesting. Watching his father-in-law successfully serve as the President & CEO of a multibillion-dollar international corporation only further fueled Dr. Ryff’s interest in business and executive leadership. Accordingly, Dr. Ryff then completed a 2-year business program, earning a Professional Graduate Certificate in Strategic Management from Harvard University Extension School. Alongside completing his business program and practicing dentistry, Dr. Ryff was also appointed Vice President of Business Development within the private equity DSO group that had acquired the practice. Dr. Ryff was involved in multiple acquisitions made by the DSO from 2013-2015, during which time the company ranked #14 for the Inc 500’s fastest growing companies in America. A drastic shift in executive leadership and corporate strategy at the DSO prompted a strategic transition for Dr. Ryff himself. In August 2016, Dr. Ryff left the corporate practice environment and acquired a private practice in Paradise Valley Arizona. During the first year, Dr. Ryff applied knowledge he had gained from his tenure in business development and business school to create a unique team environment. After hearing through social media of a themed ‘team-unity lunch’, held in good fun to help mend wounds of the 2016 post-election divide, the Washington Post featured an article about the unique atmosphere and team at Dr. Ryff’s practice. Among many factors, the leadership and management lessons Dr. Ryff acquired through his work and educational experiences contributed to a 33% growth in his new practice during the first year. Behind the scenes, Dr. Ryff negotiated improved terms with suppliers, vendors and labs with whom he had previously established positive relationships. On the front line, Dr. Ryff focused on leadership and worked to build a culture of positivity and appreciation. With the simple mission of providing clinical excellence and uncompromising service, Dr. Ryff rallied an exceptional team of focused, motivated, and accomplished professionals to take the practice to the next level. To reward their hard work and dedication, Dr. Ryff also implemented a unique bonus program, which resulted in pay increases of 24%, on average, for each employee. The combined result of applied strategic management principles, his consistent focus on positive leadership, and implementing a generous employee bonus program was a 75% increase in profit dollars for his first year as owner, 2017. The journey for Dr. Ryff and his team was not without some turbulence however. Months after becoming the new owner, Dr. Ryff learned that his landlord had suddenly passed away, leaving the entire property to charity. A big commercial real estate developer made intentions made clear that the plan was to demolish and redevelop the property. Accordingly, Dr. Ryff found a new location to continue the 60-year legacy of the practice. With the unwavering support of his loyal team and their active participation in all levels of the process, Dr. Ryff and team built a brand new state-of-the-art facility, which will serve to take the practice well into the next generation.
