As women contributed to the cause of the church in the early 20th century, they faced the challenge of juggling professional and domestic tasks, often caring for multiple generations while providing financial for the family, yet were often paid less - even half as much - as their male counterparts.  Despite working themselves into the ground, women continued to work for the benefit of their church, and Alma McKibbin was one of them. But Alma barely made it out alive.  Thank you to our guest, Laura Wibberding, Assistant Professor of History and Department Chair, Pacific Union College.  Explore More Article | Alma KcKibbin - https://encyclopedia.adventist.org/article?id=AIPT&highlight=Alma|Mckibbin  Book | A manual of lessons in Old Testament history for academic grades, by Alma McKibbin - https://lccn.loc.gov/18003993  Book | "Step by Step: The Story of Alma McKibbin" (1964) - by Alma McKibbin Book | "My Sister Alma and I" (1980) - Alonzo McKibbin Article | Sarah Peck - https://encyclopedia.adventist.org/article?id=AJI9&highlight=sarah|peck  Archive | Pacific Union College Archives - https://library.puc.edu/library/content/heritage/archives-special-collections  Article | The Sandwich Generation - Pew Research - https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2013/01/30/the-sandwich-generation/  This episode discusses Alma McKibbin and Sarah Peck, Jenny Irland, Minnie Sipe, and Alonzo McKibbin.

This begins a three-episode conversation about the history, theology, and personal impact of purity culture. Although rooted in socioreligious mores that pre-date the term, purity culture emerged in the 1990s as an evangelical Christian cultural movement. It continues to influence Seventh-day Adventist understandings of dating and marriage, sexual expression and gender identity as well as female modesty and male headship. This limited series, “Sex, Love, and Purity Culture,” introduces our next-gen video podcast called Youth Group which seeks “to look without prejudice at all sides of a subject, to evaluate the merits of diverse views, and to foster intellectual and cultural growth.” That is also a quote from the founding mission statement written on the opening page of the inaugural issue of a journal named Spectrum over fifty years ago. That commitment to creating community through conversation continues today with:Kendra Arsenault, who studied International Development & African American Studies at UCLA and earned an MDiv in Professional Chaplaincy from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University. #119 – On this episode, we begin a series of episodes about the steps to follow as you make your list of schools to which you will apply. Be begin by presenting academics, social, and affordability, as the 3 areas in which the schools that make you list should provide you a good match. We continue by highlighting the importance of the experience that you will enjoy in a school, as being central to your education. In essence, your college education will be more than the collection of classes you take, and will include all other extracurricular activities carefully drafted by the schools themselves. Jankel and I present the 5 steps that we will present in the following episodes, starting with Step # 1: Uncovering Your Personal Preferences. On this step, we begin by discussing the importance of choosing schools in locations appropriate to you. We describe the differences between urban, suburban, and rural campuses, and the experiences students will enjoy at each. We also present New York University, Villanova University, and Pacific Union College as examples of each. You will find the show notes for this episode at https://www.collegemetropolis.com. My guest this week is Shugri Said Salh, the author of the beautiful memoir, The Last Nomad, Coming of Age in the Somali Desert and the passage comes from a novel she's currently working on.Shugri's is the story of a woman who grew up in a culture very different from our own. A “spare daughter” she was sent to live with her nomadic grandmother in the desert at the age of 6. She tells the story of chasing warthogs, standing on termite mounds and listening for the sounds of predators in the distance as she watched over her herd of goats. In the evening, when the work was done, they gathered around the fire and it was here that Shugri learned the power of storytelling. That extraordinary vehicle for sharing histories, imparting wisdom and making the wide world, just a little bit smaller. We talk about the importance of noticing, of living in curiosity and the possibility of story to bring people together. About the generosity of the Somali people, and opportunity through the language of storytelling, to capture the beauty, that exists all around us. As Shugri says, we can not all walk in another's shoes, but we can certainly learn from them by hearing their story and have compassion. At the end of the day, stories have a way of reminding us of our shared humanity. Shugri Said Salh was born in the Somali desert. In 1992, she emigrated to North America after civil war broke out in her home country. She attended nursing school at Pacific Union College and graduated with honors. Although this is her first book, Salh has been storytelling since she could talk. From her grandmother and the nomadic community in which she was raised, she heard stories and learned of their power to entertain, teach, and transform. When she isn't writing or telling stories, she works as an infusion nurse. Salh lives in Southern California with her husband and three children. Inspired by the independence and strength of her nomadic Ayeeyo, (grandmother), and despite of the loss of her mother when Salh was just six, she excelled.Salh describes the deep cultural and social roots of the Somali tradition of female genital mutilation, bringing a deeper understanding to how this practice is woven into the fabric of life there. No me digas.

#079 – As we kick off our episode line-up for 2022, we begin by recapping some of the most memorable guests we had during the past year. These are guests that shared very valuable information in matters related to college admissions and college life. The content we revisit today is broad and covers the college essay, the advantages some private colleges offer over state schools, and ways to secure more financial aid than initially offered. Additionally, you will hear about ways to prepare a high school kid for the social challenges that may be experienced in a college setting. One of our guests shares how he used the courses he took in college while in high school as part of the dual enrollment program, to help his application stand out to college admission officers. That was one of the factors that contributed to his acceptance into Stanford University. You will also learn about a myth that is prevalent among students with plans to go to medical school, and ways in which your passion can help you mitigate some of your application shortcomings. You can find the show notes for this episode at https://collegemetropolis.com/79.  Please help us reach a wider audience by giving us a 5-star rating and leaving us a positive review. That is a kind gesture that we will greatly appreciate. Thank you!

Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others; then they will not be unproductive. ~ Titus 3:14 (NLT) I had a job, for one day, at Pacific Union College. It was registration day at the start of the new quarter. This was before online registration was a thing. So, based on your class standing (senior, junior, etc.) you would go down to the gym and register for your classes. Each person was given a specific time, down to the minute, when they could enter the gym and complete registration. My job was: 1) Make sure no one came in before their specified time, and 2) call out the time, minute by minute, for the entire day so students knew when they could go in. It was that last part that got old. Every minute was accounted for and announced. It was a long, mind-numbing day. Though I did my job for approximately 1,500 people that day, I didn't feel very fulfilled. People kept trying to sneak in early. People complained that I didn't call out their time and they were now late getting in. (They were, of course, mistaken. Every minute was accounted for.) No one seemed very thankful; that is, until the administrative staff and many of the professors thanked me for helping keep things manageable for them. I turns out, I wasn't serving the students. I was serving the faculty. My perspective was wrong. Often times we choose not to serve others because we have the wrong perspective. We believe we won't make a difference. Or, perhaps, our service has been met with complaints. Perhaps we don't want people to feel entitled to help, so we don't offer it. Whatever the case, it is often easier not to serve. However, the Apostle Paul says, “Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others; then they will not be unproductive.” In other words, each of us are called to have a productive faith which is measured by whether or not we actually serve others. Regardless of how we think it might go, or how big the job is, it is important for us to serve. We never know how big of a difference we will make. Perhaps God will change our perspective. Because, ultimately, you aren't serving the people, you are serving God. You are His servant helping His kingdom.

You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever. ~ Psalm 16:11 (NLT) It was my sophomore year at Pacific Union College. I had my roommate all picked out and ready to go. He had been a friend of mine for over a decade, so we were excited to room together. However, things did not go according to plan. When we arrived to get into our room, the room assignment list showed that we each had different roommates. I asked the dean, and he said he had no record of the two of us requesting to room together, so he randomly assigned us somebody. No matter how much we protested, the dean wasn't going to change the list. So, we went our separate ways to find out our fates. I entered the room to find that my new roommate was already moved in. He was from Japan and spoke barely any English. On top of that, he had a hotplate going and was cooking squid. Yup. You read that right. He was cooking squid in our room. The smell was not pleasant, and it hung around for days afterwards, too. From there, things got worse. My roommate was an early morning type of person. I was a night owl. Whenever he was up, he was not quiet, and he had friends come over. He brought a ton of Japanese tv shows and movies on DVD, which he watched endlessly. Basically, it was not a great experience. At the end of the first quarter, I petitioned the dean to move out, and he allowed me to move down the hall with another friend of mine. Living with a stranger can be down-right awkward. Sometimes it can work out. But, often times, the experience is similar to what I went through. Our verse today talks about our eternal Roommate (if you will). Those of us who accept Jesus as our Savior will live with Him forever. However, it won't be awkwardness, Japanese tv shows, or squid cooking on a hotplate. As the Psalmist states, there will be “pleasures of living with you forever.” In other words, living with God will be an amazing experience every step of the way. There won't be bad days, just excellent ones. The best part is that our life with Jesus isn't supposed to wait until He returns. He desires that relationship now. Eternity has already begun for us. Therefore, there's no time like the present to get to enjoy our Heavenly Roommate more.

Out of This World Radio with Ted Mahr and guests Billy Woodard, Michiko Hayashi and Teresita Landin Colonel Billie Faye Woodard of the United States Air Force. (guest) Billie Faye Woodard Story | Zorra of Hollow Earth Col. Billie Faye Woodard (ret.) and his twin sister, Zuria, were born in the Inner Earth, and brought to the outer Earth on September 18, 1951. They were both born with exceptional abilities, including the ability to speak an ancient Lemurian language. Both Billie and his sister were born with both male and female organs, and were hermaphrodites, but over the years Billie has become more masculine and today he has become very strong and speaks with a masculine voice. His exceptional abilities and intelligence led him to a rapid rise in the military, and during the late 1960s, he rose to the rank of Colonel, and became the base commander of Area 51. During his time there, he took a shuttle craft from the base to visit his parents in the Inner Earth. He is in touch with his parents now and visits the Inner Earth frequently. In these interviews, I talk with Billie Faye and his father Zorra from the Hollow Earth, who speaks through Billie. Zorra gives important messages to humanity from the Inner Earth and the beautiful bright future for all of us! Michiko Hayashi (co-host) Everything is vibration. Vibration is energy and information. Out of This World Radio with Ted Mahr and guests Besty Pool, Michiko Hayashi and Teresita Landin Betsy Pool If there's one story that has fascinated humans throughout time it is humanity's origin story––Who are we? Where did we come from? How did we get here? What is our purpose? And where are we going? Every culture has its own mythology, its own creation story. But this week we are going to be discussing a lost mythology that has reawakened to unite the mosaic of individual stories into a singular narrative. It is a bold, new, and at the same time ancient story that has recently been brought to light in part 1 of a 3-part documentary series that has just been released via the Internet. Betsy Pool is a master storyteller, writer-producer, director, and narrator of The Story of Everything – A New and Ancient Mythology of Humanity Revealed, which lays out, point by extraordinary point, an alternative history of humanity that stretches far outside the history books. An award-winning screenwriter with an extensive production background in Broadway theater, film, and television, she is co-founder of Wake-Up! The Association for the Advancement of Consciousness, based in Klagenfurt, Austria as well as The Institute for the Mythology of Humanity, based at the Damanhur Community in Italy where she has resided since 2009, and where she started to reassemble a cohesive ancient history of humanity that is not reflected in the history books into a mythological narrative that could be shared as a catalyst for the world. She and partner use their ability to tap into the higher selves to provide private readings and group channeling sessions for clients. Michiko Hayashi Everything is vibration. #036 - This is first of our Midweek Episodes, which feature professional profiles of people in what are considered to be the hottest careers in the next 10 years.  These are not episodes that will take the place of our regular college admission episodes. They will simply add to the content we present to you. These career-focused episodes will appear in the middle of the week. While our regular episodes will continue to be posted on Fridays. Today, we highlight the legal profession. California attorney, Joel Peterson, is in the studio, where he shares information about his upbringing, the role his high school education played in his career, and his experience as an undergrad student in Northern California, at Pacific Union College. Joel also talks about the business career he enjoyed before going becoming accepted into Western State College of Law, and the willingness of his employer to pay for a portion of his legal education. That is something Joel suggests people take advantage of in the real world. In a very candid manner, Joel shares how, after graduating from law school, his titled changed to Legal Counsel. This is a great interview for any student to listen to, because Joel gives plenty of general advice, as well as advice to those students interested in becoming attorneys. Towards the end of this episode, Joel name the skills that any person interested in going to law school should have. You can find the show notes for this episode at https://collegemetropolis.com/36. Please help our show grow by telling others about our show and by leaving us a 5-star review. That will help many other high school students and their parents find us much more easily. Thank you!

He's doing a great job not only at PUC, but in various places all over the world. *Disclaimer: The original intent was to interview all of the coordinators back to back, and then immediately publish their episodes. Instead, I severely underestimated the ability to get everyone free in the same ballpark, and it ended up taking several months to actually interview each of the 6 coordinators.
