"There were four things that I thought were really important. The first one was to be humble and confident. Number two, be open-minded, but have a point of view. The third point was to know there is no substitute to working hard. Last but not least was to embrace change and challenges.”We're in great company with Sylvia Wong, the Owner of The Roundtree Amagansett, where she meticulously polished a hidden gem into an award-winning luxury boutique hotel in the heart of the Hamptons that pays homage to Amagansett's historic farmsteading legacy while embodying the spirit of this iconic east coast destination. Her journey from corporate law executive to passionate first-time hotelier exemplifies a dream transformation—inspired by her global travels to create a rarefied Hampton's experience where guests can truly live like locals. In this episode, Sylvia shares her inspiring career pivot, the challenges of opening during a pandemic, and how she crafted an authentic home-away-from-home experience that keeps guests returning season after season.Top Takeaways[1:40] How Sylvia's corporate career took her to hidden corners of the world where she embraced diverse cultural expressions through architecture and design and found a motherly instinct for nurturing guest experiences. [5:05] It all began with a single raised hand in a meeting, a serendipitous stop on the Jitney shuttle, and Sylvia's unwavering determination to master the art of hospitality—despite having no industry experience whatsoever.[9:30] Steps from Main Street, Sylvia discovered an unassuming property with centuries of stories hidden beneath its weathered shingles and expansive grounds.[17:20] At The Roundtree Amagansett, luxury whispers rather than shouts—as guests discover thoughtful complimentary amenities designed to create moments of surprise and delight from sunrise to starlight. [30:40] Why Sylvia's sense of fulfillment is not found through financial means—it is in seeing genuine happiness wash over her guests' faces as they share their stories and experiences.[34:40] There is much creativity and collaboration yet to come—from new culinary offerings to seamless wellness incorporations to thoughtfully designed spaces where families and friends can gather to create their own Hampton traditions for generations to come.Notable Mentionsil Buco al MareBalsam FarmsAmber Waves Farm, Market & CafeLongHouse ReserveParrish Art MuseumSouth Fork BakeryFrette linens & Matouk towelsThe Maker fragrances RUMOR Rosé Wölffer Estate VineyardThe Chanler at Cliff Walk, Rhode IslandVisit For YourselfThe Roundtree Amagansett Website | @theroundtreeamagansett

Esperanza and Irwin look back at a true game changer on the East End. Before 1974, to get to eastern Long Island, you took the Long Island Rail Road, or drove. But the Jitney's original intent far more humble than shuttling people from NYC. In 1974 during the height of the Gas Crisis, founder Jim Davidson thought a series of small vans shuttling people between Southampton and Montauk was a niche to fill. Organically, as Jim's customers requested being taken back and forth to NY, the original business model changed, dramatically. So hop on, and enjoy a ride with us spanning 50 Years, and that metaphorically symbolizes the changes on the East End.

What if I told you staying organized can help you 'break a leg.' In this episode, Naeemah Chats with Actor, Writer, and Producer Vincent Alston, he talks about how he organizes his life around auditions, content creation, and working on his craft. Vincent Alston has been acting for over twenty years. What started as an elective “on the whim” acting class, quickly evolved into a life-long passion.  A theatre veteran, Vincent first tackled the role of Malcolm X in a Jeff Stetson play called The Meeting which he performed at numerous venues in the Midwest. Further honing his skills at the John Beasley Theatre, he starred in productions of Joe Turner, Jitney, and A Raisin In The Sun to name a few.  In 2007, Vincent ventured into the world of film when he wrote, produced, and starred in the independent film For Love of Amy. He also appeared in several Television dramas such as ATL Homicide, Murder Calls, Calls From The Inside, etc.  These days, Vincent has stepped back from the on-camera work, moved to the Southeast with his beautiful fiancé' Sherry, and is working on his own content and is presently shopping a pilot and several screenplays.  Learn more about Vincent on his IMDB page https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1707688/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1 You can learn more about For Love of Amy here https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1147683/ Follow us on Social Media! https://www.instagram.com/organizemeradio/ https://www.facebook.com/OrganizeMeRadio For more information about Naeemah, visit her website https://naeemahfordgoldson.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/naeemah-ford-goldson/message

This week, author and theater critic Patti Hartigan discusses her recent book August Wilson: A Life, the first authoritative biography of iconic playwright August Wilson. Hartigan is joined by actor and playwright J. Nicole Brooks. This conversation originally took place October 30, 2023 and was recorded live via Zoom. This episode is presented alongside our special exhibit Dark Testament: A Century of Black Writers on Justice, currently on display at the American Writers Museum. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME More about August Wilson: A Life August Wilson wrote a series of ten plays celebrating African American life in the 20th century, one play for each decade. No other American playwright has completed such an ambitious oeuvre. Two of the plays became successful films, Fences, starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis; and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. Fences and The Piano Lesson won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Fences won the Tony Award for Best Play, and years after Wilson's death in 2005, Jitney earned a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. Through his brilliant use of vernacular speech, Wilson developed unforgettable characters who epitomized the trials and triumphs of the African American experience. He said that he didn't research his plays but wrote from "the blood's memory," a sense of racial history that he believed African Americans shared. Author and theater critic Patti Hartigan traced his ancestry back to slavery, and his plays echo with uncanny similarities to the history of his ancestors. She interviewed Wilson many times before his death and traces his life from his childhood in Pittsburgh (where nine of the plays take place) to Broadway. She also interviewed scores of friends, theater colleagues and family members, and conducted extensive research to tell the story of a writer who left an indelible imprint on American theater and opened the door for future playwrights of color. PATTI HARTIGAN is an award-winning theater critic and arts reporter who spent many years on the staff of The Boston Globe. She divides her time between the Boston area and Charlottesville, VA. J. NICOLE BROOKS is an actor, author and director. Selected acting credits include Lottery Day (Goodman Theatre, New Stages Festival), Beyond Caring, Death Tax, and RACE (Lookingglass Theatre Company), Immediate Family (Center Theatre Group) and House Home (Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, China). Directing credits include Mr. Rickey Calls A Meeting, Thaddeus & Slocum: A Vaudeville Adventure and Black Diamond: The Years the Locusts Have Eaten. Brooks is author of HeLa, Fedra Queen of Haiti, Black Diamond, and 3 Weeks With Her Honor Jane Byrne. Television credits including recurring roles on Showtime's The Chi and Comedy Central's South Side. She is a mutli-award winning artist honored by 3Arts, TCG Fox Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Black Ensemble Theatre Playwright of the Year, LA Ovation and Black Theatre Alliance. She is an ensemble member of Lookingglass Theatre Company.

A Telenovela for the Stage By Karen Zacarías Directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson The joys, tribulations, and plot twists of epic love are bursting onstage in this brilliantly funny homage to the telenovela by Karen Zacarías (Native Gardens). On a stormy night in Bellarica, Mexico, two babies are born—one into a life of outlandish wealth, and one into a life of poverty. When the newborns are swapped by a ruthless ex–beauty queen, the stage is set for two outrageous misfortunes to grow into an extraordinary destiny. Directed by Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson (August Wilson's Jitney) and filled with vibrant choreography and live music, Destiny of Desire explores the emotional rollercoaster and social commentary that make the telenovela the most popular form of storytelling on the planet. Destiny of Desire contains mature themes, violence, strong language, and the use of haze. Please note: this production is in English, with songs in both English and Spanish. Total running time: Two hours and 40 minutes (two acts with one intermission).

Although August Wilson's play Jitney is set in the office of an unlicensed taxi company in Pittsburgh in 1977, its themes, and the relationships and hopes and dreams of its characters are universal. The play is part of Wilson's reknowned ten play series known as the Pittsburgh Cycle, which charts the black American experience through each decade of the twentieth century. I'm joined in this episode by the actors Wil Johnson and Tony Marshall, who are currently starring in the Old Vic's vibrant new production of the play.

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1.
