Moneda Moves
Boots on the Ground View of Latinos In '25 | Cora Cervantes, Independent Journalist

Welcome back, Moneda Moves community. Following an eventful start to this week in news, we have another amazing journalist on the podcast, Cora Cervantes, who spoke with Latinos all last year leading up to the election which landed Trump in office. She's here to share what she heard on the ground from Latinos, many of who are business owners, and their biggest concerns they want to see addressed – inclusive of economic issues.  And before we dive in, we would be remiss to not acknowledge the way our Latino communities (plural) will be disproportionately targeted ahead of mass deportations set to start this week. As a platform that stands behind first builders, rewriting our narratives that exemplify our collective force, and tools for empowerment – we acknowledge how damaging the combination of rhetoric and actions on behalf of the new administration can and will be. During this time, we will be leaning into our personal community on the ground. We've also found Eliza Orlins, New York City public defender, and her explainers particularly helpful as of late. As you know, this season we're focusing on 2025 economic trends, how they affect our entrepreneurial community, and how our community will move the American economy. We have a memorable lineup for you and can't wait to share the information and resources we're producing this season. As many of us know, 2024 was a tough year for small businesses. Average revenue was up, but so were expenses, according to Biz2Credit. Breaking down the numbers and net-net, profits were down: average monthly earnings for small businesses in the first 11 months of 2024 was about $86,000 - more than $60,000 lower than in 2023. Some entrepreneurs found themselves in the red in some cases, as this week's guest independent journalist Cora reported. When interviewing working-class Latinos about their businesses in 2024, she found that people were struggling to keep up with the current economic climate, let alone improve their economic standing. It can also explain why Latinos voted with the economy among their top concerns. This week's guest, Cora, is an independent journalist based in Los Angeles. She covers politics, immigration, climate change, and race and culture with an equity lens. She has a network television and cable news production background at NBC News and MSNBC. She has produced digital stories for multimedia outlets, including NBC News, Al-Jazeera, Latino USA, palabra, High Country News, and Narratively. Cora is a graduate of Columbia University and holds a Master's degree from New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. She currently serves as a board member of NAHJ's Los Angeles Chapter. Cora spent much of 2024 speaking with working-class Latinos about their businesses and how they perceive the economic environment in the United States. Small business owners are holding out hope that the economy will improve. But with the rising cost of goods eating away at their profits, they're eager for change. As a result, in the 2024 election, several sources she spoke with voted with the hope that the new president would improve the economy and protect their businesses. In this week's episode, we sit down with Cora to talk about what she learned while covering Latino business owners and their votes, as well as the coverage we can expect to see more of within the Latino community in 2025. We're discussing everything from why some Latinos voted the way they did to how stricter immigration policies could affect our day-to-day lives. The Latino community is incredibly diverse, and our reasons for what we do and who we vote for are layered. By having boots on the ground via journalists who speak with working-class business owners, we gain a better understanding of what they're experiencing and why. No te lo quieres perder. Nahj al-Balagha is among the most powerful, consequential, and linguistically brilliant masterpieces of Arabic and of Islamic thought and literature. Based on the orations, letters, and sayings of wisdom of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (d. 661), the first Imam or successor to Prophet Muhammad in Shi‘i Islam and the fourth caliph in Sunni Islam, this oral treasure was compiled and brought together as a text by the late tenth/early eleventh scholar and poet Al-Sharif al-Radi (d. 1015).  In this episode I speak with Professor Tahera Qutbuddin who has provided us with a majestic and brilliant complete English translation of Nahj al-Balagha titled Nahj al-Balāgha: The Wisdom and Eloquence of ‘Alī (Brill, 2024), a parallel English-Arabic text published open access by Brill. The publication of this volume is an event of seismic importance in the study of Islam, religion, and Arabic. Qutbuddin's translation is animated with the purpose of rendering the Arabic text of Nahj al-Balagha in English in a fashion that amplifies its literary and philosophical potency, a task at which she excels throughout the translation. The experience of reading this translation is nothing short of a deeply moving, philosophically enriching, and linguistically powerful rhapsody. In addition to an eminently user friendly translation with the particular sections and moments of Nahj al-Balagha clearly marked out, Qutbuddin also presents an erudite account of the text's reception, reception history, and archival density. This outstanding volume will also be a joy to teach and use as primary source material in a range of courses on Islam, religion, Arabic, and the Humanities more broadly. SherAli Tareen is Professor of Religious Studies at Franklin and Marshall College. His research focuses on Muslim intellectual traditions and debates in early modern and modern South Asia. His book Defending Muhammad in Modernity (University of Notre Dame Press, 2020) received the American Institute of Pakistan Studies 2020 Book Prize and was selected as a finalist for the 2021 American Academy of Religion Book Award. Welcome to season 2, episode 26 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is Hugo Balta, an experienced award-winning, broadcast & digital media news executive directing growth and innovation in several divisions and businesses in the U.S. and Latin America.Hugo's nearly 30-years of experience include leadership roles with storied news networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, and Telemundo.Hugo is the owner/publisher of the Latino News Network (LNN) – the only English language news and information outlet focused on serving Hispanics-Latinos in New England. LNN also amplifies the work of others in elevating the visibility and voices of a community often absent in newsrooms and news coverage.Hugo is also a writer and associate editor for The Chicago Reporter producing stories focused on covering race, ethnicity, and culture in the third largest market in the U.S.In addition to being an accomplished journalist, Hugo is the only president to serve two terms in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' (NAHJ) history. In 2016, he was inducted into the NAHJ Hall of Fame, and as part of his acceptance founded the Hortencia Zavala Scholarship – a not-for-profit to help students with the high cost of education. Hugo was born in Patterson, NJ and is the proud son of Peruvian immigrants. He shares that growing up he felt like a child of two worlds, as he had the responsibility at a young age of bridging the language barrier between his parents and the outside world. There were many times in his career that Hugo could have chosen to blend in, have a big title, and hefty paycheck, but that would have caused him to have to stray from his beliefs and convictions. When those situations would arise, he would think about what his mom had to go through working in a sweatshop or that he never saw his dad much as he worked 2-3 jobs 7 days a week. His parents worked hard to be able to provide Hugo with the incredible opportunities that he has been able to leverage. From messaging around never giving up or compromising your beliefs to don't listen to all the noise, Hugo has so much insight to offer. Next week my guest is Charlene Gorzela, Podcast Host, Grief Recovery Now and Grief Recovery Method Specialist.  After 26 years as the CEO of a successful Professional Staffing Services firm in the city of Chicago, she knew that the next chapter would be another important one for her.  She has always had the passion in the human potential movement and knew that this next chapter in her life would be something unprecedented and extraordinary.   What happened was something that even in her wildest dreams, she would not even have guessed that she would be doing.  Please take a moment to write a review when streaming. In fact, she never had any intention of being an editor. In this in-depth conversation, she talks about amplifying the voices and positions of other Latinas and women of color. She shares what the pre-story dialogue looks like with her department's reporters. Romero reveals why change is so hard in sports media and how she's found allies in other female sports editors in Florida. Romero discusses what makes a good beat reporter, the recent moves by the Washington Football Team to address sexual harassment and workplace issues and her response to people who want their sports free of politics. She gets personal on the health adversities her husband has faced and how the couple have worked through the challenge together.A steadying presence and leader in the newsroom, Romero doesn't just work to create change- she lives it everyday. She's a VP for AWSM, overseeing the AWSM Champions mentorship program and is an active member of NAHJ. Romero covers her approach to mentorship and breaks down why representation in media matters now, more than ever. To keep up with Iliana Limon Romero on social media:Twitter @osiliana

Where do I go for my knowledge? Whom do I trust when there are so many opinions out there? (Part 1)

Hujjat Podcast

Part 1: Presenting the Problem In a world with so many opinions vying for your attention and belief, how do you know what is true and what is false? To whom do you go to get your knowledge and how do you know whom to trust? Take the issue of Brexit. A spectrum of politicians, experts, panel guests, radio and tv hosts all claim to know what they are talking about and know what is in your best interest. Or take the number of scholars and speakers each with varying opinions on the same topic. It can become confusing and difficult to navigate. How do I know whom to listen to and who is truthful? Our topic over these forthcoming Friday Khutba’s will be to review what the Qur’an and Ahadith instruct us about where to place our trust when there are so many multiple voices God-willing. The Qur’an mentions to us the story of Prophet Shu’ayb (a) and his dialogue with the people of Medyan. “He said, ‘O my people, have you considered: if I am upon clear evidence from my Lord’” (Qur’an 11:88). All the prophet’s (a) have similar dialogues. Usually the prophet is rejected because he doesn’t have the elite following him or their lives are comfortable so they see no need to change their practises, such as the people of Hud (a) who had the greatest technological advancements of time. Place yourself in the shoes of the community of Prophet Shu’ayb (a). If he came to you and said, ‘Believe in me. Because I am on clear evidence from my Lord’, a legitimate question would be raised, ‘Would someone saying to you, ‘I am on evidence of truth’ be enough to convince you?’ (We will discuss this verse more in the coming weeks). This issue of whom to trust was mentioned by Imam Ameer al-Mo’mineen Ali (a) in Sermon 32 of Nahj al-Balaghah when he stated, “O people! We have been born in such a wrongful and thankless period wherein the virtuous is deemed vicious and the oppressor goes on advancing in his excess.” When reputations and qualities of people are mixed up, it becomes even more difficult to know whom to trust for sound opinions. In fact this is a challenge particularly emphasised at the End of Time. In a famous narration the holy Prophet Muhammad (s) mentions signs for the Last Days saying يَا ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ إِنَّ مِنْ أَعْلَامِ السَّاعَةِ وَأَشْرَاطِهَا أَنْ يَكُونَ الْمُؤْمِنُ فِي الْقَبِيلَةِ أَذَلَّ مِنَ النَّقَدِ “O Ibn Mas’ood, from amongst the signs and conditions [of the last days] is the Believer will be humiliated worse than the ugly goat.” O Ibn Mas’ood, from amongst the signs and conditions will be that people will trust treacherous people and consider trustworthy people treacherous and the truthful one called a liar and one telling lie will be considered truthful. An example of this is a true story about Donald Trump. Recently he was visited by Disney who have animatronic figures of all the past Presidents. They wanted to record something so that as visitors came they would hear what President Trump had to say. Usually recordings are something grand, inspiration, like the Gettysburg Address. Trump however, wanted his recording to say, “Americans invented the Skyscraper.” This is not true at all. Skyscrapers are just taller buildings than those before. The Qur’an mentions the people of Hud (a) as being the first to build talk buildings! He outright lied! And why?! Because he owns Trump Towers and so wanted to be associated to a historical achievement – so he decided to just make one up! This is our dire situation today and so our series addresses where to get knowledge and whom to trust.
