Rolling on with Episode 11 of Daniel Carbonel’s Wake Up to Freedom Podcast introduces us to Paul Kortman. Paul is a digital nomad and even though he is married with four kids he is able to support his family on what otherwise be a very expensive lifestyle that only millionaires could afford. Or maybe Paul is a millionaire himself! Being a digital nomad was never Paul’s dream, but he was able to find financial freedom online and that’s how it all started. Find out more from this episode on how Paul was able to raise his family while traveling across continents on a very efficient budget plan. Who is Paul Kortman? Paul Kortman is the owner and operator of Home Along The Way.com. This website which includes a blog, family travel blog, books, podcast and other interesting things showcases his success by creating financial freedom online. They are a family of 6 who have chosen to be location-independent and in 2014 they’ve decided to sell everything they had and started traveling all over the world! They have been to Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, San Francisco, USA, South Africa, Portugal, Bulgaria and Malaysia; and they don’t intend to stop any time soon. Paul is easily making over half a million dollars a year just by our estimates, but he claims that most of the places he and his family have been to only cost them $1,000 a month to live in. That already includes rent, airplane tickets, rented vehicles, food and other expenses – which is crazy considering the inflation and high costs of living in almost every place you go. But Paul was able to do it through his digital marketing chops and amazing wits. Why Did He Decide to Become a Digital Nomad? Paul didn’t actually plan to become a digital nomad and he merely called his wife’s bluff about the whole location-independent thing after listing to a podcast called, “Tropical MBA.” They simply decided one day that they were going to travel the world and live a freedom lifestyle business while maximizing their family time together and never miss out on time with their kids again. They were able to do this by creating financial freedom online and the returns from their investments (time and effort) were very positive and he and his wife are so pleased with it. Having successfully established himself as a premier digital marketer with his own digital marketing agency, Paul, being a normal human being that he is, wanted what other successful people had. Things like expensive clothes, gold watches, pieces of jewelry and other accessories, exotic cars and big houses that he thought would make him and his family happy. However, pondering on that idea he realized that it was contrary to what they all wanted as a family – time freedom. Having created his freedom business now and finding the gold at the end of the rainbow which is financial freedom online, he doesn’t need all those material wealth anymore even though he could afford to buy them. No, the goal was to spend time together, love each other, and enjoy life to the fullest. What Does He Want You to Do with Your Life? Often digital marketers are among the kindest people on Earth that you’ll ever meet and it’s not because they make lots of money and enjoy a freedom lifestyle business. But rather it’s because they see the potential in every person they meet and they know exactly how to make any person a successful entrepreneur and create their own financial freedom online. So if you ask what Paul wants you to do with your life? Well, he would want you to become as successful and as happy as he is. Once you receive so many blessings, selfishness will not be found in you and all you want to do is to share all these blessings to every soul you touch. What You Will Learn from this Podcast: What it’s like being location-independent Why becoming a digital nomad is good for you What it takes to find financial freedom online Recommended apps and books

If you run an e-commerce store or rely on website visits for your business, getting people to your website will be high on your priorities. In this episode I speak to Paul Kortman about increasing traffic to your website through an SEO trick called the Skyscraper Technique. As Paul explains, search engine optimisation is largely depending on three factors - the code you use for your website, on-page content like keywords, and backlinks. The Skyscraper technique is a great way of building tons of backlinks to your website. This will help position your site as an authority in the eyes of Google and will help you rank well. Don't forget to pick up my handy email template you can use while applying this technique in your own business. That as well as all the links mentioned in the episode is available on my show notes page.
Today on the show we have Paul Kortman of Connex Digital Marketing to talk to us about an SEO technique called Skyscraper Link Building. What is it and how does it help you boost your website up the search results? Plus, we’ll demystify some other SEO topics and get into an interesting sidebar about how Paul runs his business and travels the globe with his family all at the same time. All that and so much more coming up right now!

Paul Kortman and his family of 6 are digital nomads and living a life on the road RVing through Mexico all while running a digital marketing agency. Paul actually has two ripcord moments and we go deep into both of them. "How can we lower our cost of living dramatically while improving our quality of living?" The first is when he quit "the best job he ever had" to start his own marketing agency. The second is when him and his wife with 4 kids sold everything in Grand Rapids Michigan to go location independent and travel the world while still running the agency. Things didn’t initially go as planned. Within 3 months of them being digital nomads, Paul lost 3 clients that equated to 90% of his revenue and things quickly imploded. We discuss... How they planned to leave Grand Rapids for good and travel the world as digital nomads. When things quickly fell apart just 3 months into their journey. Returning to Grand Rapids to re-group and re-build their digital marketing agency. Buying a 300 square foot RV for the family to continue their nomadic lives. Living and working in Mexico. The digital tools that he relies on to run his business and thrive as a location independent entrepreneur. The ups and downs of living a life on the road with a family of 6. "Yes, I could make more money but I would have to work more and what's the fun in that?" This is a story of a resilient family that refused to give up on their dreams of living and working from anywhere and a motto that they’ve adopted when their traveling lifestyle hits a roadblock is, “if we are going to laugh about it later, why not laugh about it now.” Show Notes HomeAlongtheWay.com PaulKortman.com Connexdigitalmarketing.com The Nomad Together podcast Mentioned: The Tropical MBA, The Family Adventure Podcast Tools that Paul depends on to run his business from anywhere: Slack, Trello, Google Hangouts, Zapier, Skype, Google Voice, T-mobile Sponsors PrintDirtCheap.com – Rockstars in printing with over 30 categories of printing products doing it FAST and doing it CHEAP. Exposure Ninja Digital Marketing Podcast | SEO, eCommerce, Digital PR, PPC, Web design and CRO
Heard about the Skyscraper technique in online marketing but never tried it out? Had a go at using it but didn’t get results? Then this episode of the Exposure Ninja Digital Marketing Podcast is for you! Listen to our chat with Paul Kortman of nomadtogether.com on how this relatively new approach to link building can be pulled off effectively to benefit your website’s visibility. In essence, the Skyscraper technique begins with identifying a blog post or web page that’s both relevant to your audience and has been linked to by many authoritative websites. The idea is to then see a weakness in the post and write your own, on your business’ website and/or blog. Then, contact the websites that linked to the original post and aim to convince them to link to yours – or, even better, get them to switch their link from the old post to yours! With links, it’s about quantity as well as quality. To get a high amount of authoritative website linking to content on your website, you need to give them a reason to do so. The Skyscraper technique focuses on this, centring in on a piece of content that websites have already seen fit to link to, and then offering something even better affiliate themselves with. Paul and Head Ninja Tim take us step-by-step through the entire process of how to successfully pull this strategy off. They look at the traditional marketing techniques it riffs off and how to refine your approach to make it a consistent link builder for your website. Paul stuck his nose into SEO after seeing his employer's proposals. He was a systems administrator, but they challenged him to do it anyway. Paul Kortman is a self-proclaimed “odd duck” with a foot in two different worlds. His areas of focus include both SEO tactics and paid video advertisements. Odd duck? Or one well-rounded digital marketer? In this episode, Paul discusses the SEO tactics and video ad strategies he’s found to be most effective and how to successfully apply them to your business. Episode Discussions: Why Paul recommends recording different videos for Facebook and YouTube ads Testing different video ad lengths and which ones offer a great return 4 elements of a successful video ad Paul’s preference: Video template vs. short script Using actual customers vs. paid actors to deliver your message Alternatives to traditional video ads: video sales letters and animated videos How Paul does and doesn’t use retargeting The strategy behind split-testing videos Why diversity is important in your marketing How organic ranks and SEO aid paid traffic Why SEO is a long-term yet effective strategy Backlinks: What they are and how they affect your website’s authority Paul’s tips for gaining linkback credit Two factors to SEO mastery What type of content has the best chance of ranking for SEO How long-tail keywords will help boost your search engine rank How to get an unbiased 3rd party opinion of your content for the price for a coffee 1:27 Small to medium businesses will see lower costs per acquisition if they do an actual video ad. 1:44 One of Paul's clients is paying less than $2 per email address acquisition. He found success via video ads on Facebook which allows him to directly target his audience. 2:24 Paul recommends recording different videos for Facebook and YouTube ads. 3:02 "I try to stress to all of my clients to keep it down to 15 seconds. This is an elevator pitch minus the elevator doors even closing. The moment you step foot on that elevator, you have to spit it out."-PK 4:06 Paul encourages his clients to write up a short script and use their phones to record. Usually the 5th or 6th take that works well. 6:52 Things to include in your 15 second video: Scarcity Price and time urgency Mention customization 7:31 Make sure you're talking right to your target audience. Use anything that would work on a landing page or sales copy. Make sure there's value. Talk about your client, not yourself. Mention the benefits of your offer, not the features. One simple call to action (CTA) 11:31 Alternatives to directly delivering the message yourself in your video ad. 12:02 "You trust someone if you see their eyes."-PK 13:11 If Paul doesn't capture interest with the video enough to get click-throughs, a different video is created all together. 13:33 "We actually split-test the videos rather than try to retarget."-PK 16:43 "PPC is short-term, quick gains. SEO is a long-term, in it for the long haul." 17:07 To master SEO: Have the high-quality content that people are searching for Have the backlinks and authority 18:22 Focus on creating high-quality content that people are talking about, commenting on or linking to. Most likely a blog article. Then market the content. 20:31 Depending on how competitive your industry and market is, your homepage, services page or pricing page won't affect your rank. Long-tail keywords are less competitive and more likely to rank in the search engines. 21:48 "All boats rise with the tide." As you get backlinks, it raises the value and authority of your entire website. 22:47 Paul’s actionable tip for small businesses to generate leads and increase conversion rates: Business owners are so closely tied to their businesses. It’s difficult to see things objectively sometimes… "The next time you're in Starbucks, pull up a webpage from your website and say ‘Listen I'll buy your drink, I just wanna ask you a few questions about this webpage.” Ask them to review your content and they’ll give you good, honest feedback. Have you had second thoughts about family traveling because you are nervous about flying with kids? Today we are sharing our top tips for flying with babies and toddlers to help get over that hurdle and get out there. ON THE PODCAST 00:30 - Kim and Tamara chat about flying with babies 05:55 - Tips for managing kids' gear traveling on a plane 11:40 -About Becky and Paul Kortman 16:54 - Carrying less 19:32 - Best times for feeding during flight 20:08 - Don’t stress out with your baby 24:20 - Little ‘Thanks for being patient” gifts 16:35 - Bag of activities 30:30 - Five dollar upgrade 32:27 - Tips on changing diapers on the plane 37:20 - Getting a bassinet through the airline 38:22 - Favorite travel gear 41:15 - App of the week 44:30 - SHOUT OUTS! ABOUT PAUL AND BECKY KORTMAN The Kortmans are a family of 6 who have chosen a life of location independence. In early 2014, they sold they house and most of their possessions and began a life of travel. They’re choosing to improve their quality of life through travel and opening their kids’ eyes to a broader worldview. You can read more of the back story behind their trip on Home Along the Way or follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. TIPS FOR FLYING WITH BABIES One big tip for traveling with babies on a plane is to travel as light as possible. Wearing your baby in a carrier is a great way to cut down on your gear. If you are breast feeding, let your baby nurse whenever they want. It is a comfort thing! Don't overthink or worry too much about what other people think. What to pack in your ‘bag of activities’: wikki sticks, post-it notes, etc. Don’t pack anything round because it will roll away. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Paul and Becky like anything super comfy and easy to take on and off. Having a shirt pocket is helpful to put your phone and what not in for easy access. APP OF THE WEEK Most major airlines have their own app. Using their app you can check-in for your flight, keep an eye on your seat and use a mobile boarding pass. Many people share the same dream - the yearning to sell everything you own, buy an RV, and just drive. Just live, just be, and enjoy the freedom that comes with that nomadic lifestyle. Hayden lived that way as a child, and Paul Kortman lives that way now. He and his family of six live in an RV, traveling around America and Mexico, making Paul a veritable fountain of knowledge and wisdom when it comes to RV-ing. Paul visits Hayden to discuss his digital nomad lifestyle, how he decided not to settle and why he thinks nobody else should have to, and what the benefits of his nomadic lifestyle are. Paul also talks about how important it is to find a balance with those you travel with, and answers a few crucial questions one might have if they were thinking about becoming location independent. Paul also shares his story, titled “Why You Should Never Trust Google Maps,” which takes place in Mexico in his RV and features a 57-foot-long rig, a steep slope that might be a bit more than Paul and his RV can chew, and a Google Map that has no concept of just how impossible it will be for this rig to follow its directions. Becoming location independent is not an easy task, but Paul offers some helpful advice and ways of tackling the difficulties of his life. Though it was a long road to get to where he is now, Paul knows that making the decision not to settle was the best decision he and his family ever could have made. 0:43 - Hayden discusses the motor home he and his family traveled in when he was young, and how that led to a dream many people have had - where you can sell everything you own, buy an RV, and just driving, living, being, and the freedom that comes with it. 2:46 - Hayden introduces Paul Kortman, an avid RV-er who travels around America and Mexico with his family of six in an RV. Paul discusses maintaining positivity in your travels. 6:02 - Paul and Hayden talk about Paul’s digital nomad lifestyle and how he manages this with his family of six. Paul discusses how he makes hard decisions in this life and how he gets the word out that nobody has to compromise or settle in their lives. He decided not to settle, and it was the best decision he and his wife ever made. 16:02 - Paul mentions the benefits of his nomadic lifestyle, and how the travel bug is in his family’s blood. He also talks about starting a home base in the next couple of years, that he would then travel from, combining the best of both worlds and doing what they most want to do. 20:32 - Paul starts telling his Mexican RV story, titled “Why You Should Never Trust Google Maps.” Once Paul and his family got their RV, they decided to travel for their first camping trip. They spent six months driving their RV, which was so large that they could barely fit in highway lanes, with their minivan and trailer pulling behind them. They traveled for six months this way, eventually ending up in Mexico, through the use of Google Maps. Paul and his family encountered a steep slope that he attempted to drive up, but failed; he listened to the instructions of Google... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/backpackdigital/message

"I don't think the goal for us is to live an easy life.” A few years ago, Paul Kortman and his wife had a radical idea. What if they sold their house in Michigan, packed up their family and became nomadic? While a lot of people probably have this pipe dream, the Kortmans actually did it. In fact, they’ve been living on the road since 2014 and their first stops included SE Asia, South Africa and parts of Europe. Now, this family of six, plus a dog, are roadtripping their way through Mexico, Central America and Ecuador in an RV. On this show, I talk to Paul about how the kids make friends, the family’s view on school and how they’ve used medical tourism to their advantage. Full show notes available: andreawien.com/kortmans

We just celebrated our 27th year anniversary, which apparently is a big thing. And even bigger considering we’ve spent the last 18 months hopping the globe together. And they said it wouldn’t last. But that’s not what we want to talk about. We have two more stories on today’s show, one from Thailand and one from Mexico: 1. Shopping For Support Music credit: Upbeat Forever by Kevin MacLeod Bangkok is a hotspot for shoppers. Yes, people take vacations to Bangkok just to go shopping. Which is nuts, but happens. For us, it means we’ve a wide range of options to choose from, though Evo’s stereotypical disdain of shopping keeps him out of most stores. He’s found one he likes, however. But that’s probably because he doesn’t need a sports bra. Yet. 2. Mexico By Motorhome Music credit: Party Complex by Kevin MacLeod Talk about your epic family road trip. Paul Kortman’s family of six -- plus dogs! -- lives the location independence lifestyle via a motorhome. When he’s not helping others lead a similar life, he’s battling his nemesis on the gritty streets of Mexico: Google Maps! And that’s the show! I’ve never considered the idea of RVing in Mexico, but in episode number seven of The RV Entrepreneur I sat down to talk with Paul Kortman.
