The end of the financial year presents a prime opportunity for brokers to move from reactive, single-product lending to more connected solutions for SME clients. Reid Davidson, state lead for Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania at commercial lender Lumi, joins In Focus to discuss how brokers can support SMEs as they actively seek to connect the dots between working capital, asset finance, and property. He discusses the growing expectation for brokers to operate as "full-capital advisers"; explains the structural and process challenges that can make it difficult to deliver joined-up solutions in practice; and highlights how tools, like Lumi Pulse, are designed to streamline quoting and execution, so brokers can maintain momentum during peak EOFY activity. Tune in to find out: The impact of increased volatility on structural pressures facing SMEs. Why EOFY is prompting SMEs to take a more strategic approach to funding. How brokers can deliver faster, more connected capital solutions. And much more!

#791 What if the key to finding your perfect business idea isn't in the market — but within yourself? In this first installment of a two-part conversation, host Brien Gearin sits down with Jason VanDevere, founder of Goal Crazy and author of Dream Driven, to explore how entrepreneurs can discover the right business idea and build a path toward meaningful success. There is one company that is so synonymous with the 1990s that it has been used as a visual cue for the era in virtually every nostalgia-tinged movie and TV show since it went out of business: Blockbuster Video. But, despite being a titan of industry and THE go-to store in its niche, the company's demise was as rapid and embarrassing as the brand was iconic.Wasteful spending, a reluctance to innovate, and paying top executives tens of millions of dollars when the company was struggling to turn a profit, were just some of the many stupid decisions the company had already made by the time it made what many experts consider to be the most catastrophic decision in corporate history: Blockbuster turned down the opportunity to buy Netflix for just $50 million.Stick around to learn more about one of the most ridiculous corporate downfalls ever.https://www.patreon.com/HistorysGreatestIdiotshttps://www.instagram.com/historysgreatestidiotsArtist: Sarah Cheyhttps://www.fiverr.com/sarahcheyAnimation: Daniel Wilsonhttps://www.instagram.com/wilson_the_wilson/Music: Andrew Wilsonhttps://www.instagram.com/andrews_electric_sheepWant to create live streams like this? Four years ago, Chuck Chamness stepped away from his 18-year tenure as president and CEO of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies. He looked around at the state industry he'd long worked for and with, and he saw a mélange of strong businesses facing seemingly insurmountable headwinds: Inflation, catastrophe costs, regulatory uncertainty, public perception problems, and the poky pace of technology adoption all served as fiscal stressors for insurance carriers; particularly smaller, regional, mutual insurance operators. In this January 2025 interview, Chamness expands on what he views as pressing business issues facing the insurance industry and offers ideas about how to move forward.

Recent years have brought an upsurge in celebrity activism. Not a day goes by without an actor or musician taking to a stage, a podium or the internet to speak on a social issue, address an environmental problem, or adopt a political position. It's easy to be cynical about the motivations of these privileged and sometimes uninformed people. Many of them come across as self-serving. But others appear genuine. Either way, celebrity activists are here to stay and it is incumbent on us to think about what it means for politics that we now live in an age in which celebrities are preferred over elected political leaders as spokespeople for humanitarian causes, and human rights. Who are they addressing? Who benefits when they speak? And what are the costs that they do? The answers to these questions, Samantha Majic explains on this episode of New Books in Interpretive Political and Social Science, are neither singular nor straightforward. How and why celebrities take up causes, she writes in Lights, Camera, Feminism? Celebrities and Anti-trafficking Politics (University of California Press, 2023) is shaped and mediated by a range of personal and contextual factors. Nor do celebrity activists always go along with dominant narratives or align themselves with prevailing ideologies. They depend on certain infrastructures to be heard, but they make their own decisions about how and why they are. And while many of these decisions are ethically defensible, the problem with the celebrity activist is that they are unaccountable because they are self-appointed to represent the interests of others.
