Richard McGuire's 2014 graphic novel Here takes place in one location—the corner of a living room in a house in what is probably Perth Amboy, New Jersey—over the course of billions of years, from 300,000,500,000 B.C. to the far-off year 22,175. In between, we see slivers of events both dramatic and mundane, catching glimpses of ordinary lives and extraordinary creatures, and watch as small moments echo and comment on each other across the decades and centuries. It's a fascinating work that makes use of the comics medium in original and inventive ways, a seemingly unfilmable book that's somehow being adapted into a major motion picture starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, directed by Robert Zemeckis, for release later this year. But is that enough to score a ticket to that Land That Time Forgot known as ... The Comics Canon? In This Episode: · An unlikely Forrest Gump sequel · Hey, it's Ben Franklin! · The Reversible Man by Alan Moore and Mike White · Evil Season 4 · Reinventing Comics by Scott McCloud · Flash Gordon by Dan Schkade Join us in two weeks as we discuss Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Who Is Scorpio? by Jim Steranko! Did you want to explore and be free before marriage? Did your parents expect you to get married? Before penning a best-selling book chronicling the experiences of his Holocaust survivor parents from Lithuania, Michael Ruskin led a diverse life rooted in swing and country music. Now, his primary focus is on his book and its legacy. Today's episode is a spiritual journey through faith, family, and the forging of a personal identity in the face of adversity. Hosts Reena Friedman Watts and Wayne Friedman are joined by the inspiring Michael Ruskin to discuss the somber history of the Holocaust and the nuances of Jewish life and spirituality. Michael takes us on an emotional ride, reflecting on his personal struggles with his Jewish heritage, his relationship with his mother, and his deep connection with his faith. His story is one of contrast—between the smothering love of his family and his own quest for love and freedom, between the darkness of the Holocaust and the light of the human spirit. In today's episode, Michael shares insights from his own life experience—washing dishes for Passover, engaging in self-reflection, and embracing an active lifestyle. His candid storytelling resonates with a universal longing for authenticity and a better understanding of our spiritual existence, including beliefs in reincarnation and astrology. Michael's legacy is vital not just for him but for the Jewish community, as we learn about his book "The Vow, A Love Story and The Holocaust" and his lifetimestories.net project. This episode is rich with history, from the tragedies of World War II to the incredible story of his parents—survivors of concentration camps and death marches—whose profound love and faith bore witness to unspeakable horrors. So join us as we explore the strength derived from ancestry, the complexities of identity, and the undeniable power of storytelling with Michael Ruskin. Is Torah relevant as we go into the new year (not the Jewish new year, just the regular new year)? Afterall, this text was written over 3,000 years ago! How can something so literally ancient be applied to a world with social media, vaccines, gender studies, technology, and more? Rabbi Benzion Klatzko explains the world that we face today from the Jewish perspective. This fascinating dialogue brings about many questions and probably warrants for a 2-part episode. About Rabbi Klatzko: Rabbi Klatzko attended Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland and received his rabbinic ordination from Mir Yeshiva in Brooklyn, New York from Rabbi Shmuel Berenbaum, ZTL. Rabbi Klatzko accepted an offer to serve as Rabbi of the 14th ave Agudath Israel of Brooklyn, New York. After seven years of serving, he began a three year stint as the Rabbi of Shaarey Tzedek Congregation in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. In 1999 saw the Klatzko family move to California so that he could accept the position of Campus Rabbi at UCLA, the first of hundreds of Olami rabbis who would work and live on campus. As a hands-on and loveable ambassador for the Jewish faith, he reconnected literally thousands of young Jewish men and women to their heritage. He also made an impressive splash in the broader Jewish community, earning the moniker “The Hollywood Rabbi.” Some of Hollywood's biggest stars and producers became regulars at his popular monthly class on Jewish thought. Beyond transforming lives at UCLA through JAM, Rabbi Klatzko's activities touched-off a revolution that profoundly changed the landscape of North American Jewry. Almost overnight, dozens of young rabbis throughout the country moved their families to campuses with high Jewish populations in an effort to reach out to the unaffiliated and curious. To this day, hundreds of young rabbis seek out Rabbi Klatzko's sagacious advice in an effort to glean some of his wisdom and experience. He currently serves as a Senior Director for Olami and in that capacity oversees and trains Jewish educators throughout North America. Rabbi Klatzko also founded the highly impactful “Akiva Trip” franchise with trips to Israel, Poland and New York Stateside. A person of indefatigable energy, Rabbi Klatzko is also a successful author (The Kuntrus / Moznaim Publications), noted public speaker, music producer, and Mohel. Exposing Western propaganda slandering Russia and China. During today's episode, we discuss our support for and solidarity with both nations from a Latin American and Caribbean perspective. We expose U.S. attempts to paint Russian and Chinese cooperation in the region as "imperialist." We talk about Moscow and Beijing's support for anti-imperialist governments in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. We also discuss why a growing number of Latin American and Caribbean people are embracing multipolarity and cooperation with Eurasia. Lastly, we offer our thoughts on "American Patriotic Socialism" from an anti-colonial, Global South perspective. Today's guests are Pedro X and Victor Coronado. Pedro X is a Boricua nationalist in the diaspora who is involved in the struggle for Puerto Rican independence. Victor Coronado is an editor with ANTICONQUISTA, an anti-imperialist media collective for the Latin American and Caribbean diaspora. Victor is based in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Unmasking Imperialism exposes imperialist propaganda in mainstream media. Hosted by Ramiro Sebastián Fúnez.
After attending his first horror convention, Lou Avilleira knew he wanted to dress up for the next one. He created a character he called Father Evil for his second “con” and was amazed by the positive feedback he got. So much so that he started attending cons regularly dressed as Father Evil and developed his own cult following among horror fans. Then things got serious. When he turned 40 he gave up his lifelong quest to fit in and decided to stop caring what other people thought. That allowed him to embrace - and become - this character, who is getting close to providing enough income that Lou can give up his day job and become “the Father” full time. Guest Bio Father Evil comes from the creative mind of Lou Avilleira. He first came up with the idea of the Holy Father in 2009 for a Halloween party. He received such positive feedback from his character that he decided to take it a little further. Starting out at Chiller Theatre as one of many costumed horror fans, he soon rose above as one of the best. Father Evil is now well known amongst the horror community with an extensive fan following. Lou Avilleira was born and raised in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Born of Cuban immigrants, he was the first generation born in America. Having an early love of horror due to the influence of his mother, he's always had a love for the dark side. He is happily married to his wife of 15 years, Sarah, and has a son, Xavier. Lou currently resides in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. The Birth of Father EvilLou's character, Father Evil, was born in the ‘90s as a drawing that hung in a trendy coffee spot in Rutgers, NJ, called Indigo Jones. Lou saw that the shop hung creations from local artists and decided to submit one of his own. He created a cross between a ghastly, priestly looking figure, the Joker and Reverend Henry Kane from Poltergeist II. The figure had his hands in a prayer position and behind him it said, "In nomine patris, et filii, et spiritus sancti," "in the name of the father, the son and holy spirit." Lou has always been creative. In second grade, he memorized the pattern to draw Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and trained his hand to draw it. Growing up, he loved comic books, especially the X-Men. Then, around 2006, a friend of his wife's was going to a horror convention, a “con” in the parlance. His wife knew Lou loved horror so the three of them went. Lou fell in love and vowed to dress up the next time he attended. Two years later, Lou made good on the promise. He was brainstorming on what to dress up as. He wondered what would scare people if they saw it in a dark alley. He discarded a clown, a vampire, a zombie - they've all been done before. He landed on a possessed priest, because if it can get to a priest, what chance do you have? He thought it would be a one-time thing. He got a $20 priest costume at Party City. He already sported a chop-style beard (though less glorious than it is today!) and he could arch his eyebrows and make an evil face. He got a pair of white-out contacts, hung a huge cross on his chest, and he was ready! I Think We've Got Something HereThe reception from other attendees was fantastic. People were asking to take pictures with him and he was loving it. As he made his way into one of the rooms, an Italian horror movie director caught sight of him. The director had a line of about 20 people for autographs but stepped away to talk to Lou. He told Lou the costume was so original, simple, but to the point. “Oh my God. I never saw. This is so simple. It's it's bad, but good.” He wondered if it could be that easy. In 2010, he started going to the cons more regularly, always dressed as Father Evil. In 2012, the year he turned 40, he started to take it seriously. He got serious about his outfit and upgraded from the $20 Halloween costume. Lou says he felt like a Phoenix coming out of the ashes. He says he found himself. Giving himself permission to...

Application. In the year of the 150th anniversary of the Fifteenth Amendment Columbia University history professor and historian Eric Foner said about the Fifteenth Amendment as well as its history during the Reconstruction era and Post-Reconstruction era: It's a remarkable accomplishment given that slavery was such a dominant institution before the Civil War. But the history of the 15th Amendment also shows rights can never be taken for granted: Things can be achieved and things can be taken away. Reconstruction. African Americans called the amendment the nation's "second birth" and a "greater revolution than that of 1776" according to historian Eric Foner in his book The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution. The first black person known to vote after the amendment's adoption was Thomas Mundy Peterson, who cast his ballot on March 31, 1870, in a Perth Amboy, New Jersey referendum election adopting a revised city charter. African Americans—many of them newly freed slaves—put their newfound freedom to use, voting in scores of black candidates. During Reconstruction, 16 black men served in Congress and 2,000 black men served in elected local, state and federal positions according to Columbia University history professor Eric Foner. In United States v Reese (1876), the first U.S. Supreme Court decision interpreting the Fifteenth Amendment, the Court interpreted the amendment narrowly, upholding ostensibly race-neutral limitations on suffrage including poll taxes, literacy tests, and a grandfather clause that exempted citizens from other voting requirements if their grandfathers had been registered voters. The Court also stated that the amendment does not confer the right of suffrage, but it invests citizens of the United States with the right of exemption from discrimination in the exercise of the elective franchise on account of their race, color, or previous condition of servitude, and empowers Congress to enforce that right by "appropriate legislation". The Court wrote: The Fifteenth Amendment does not confer the right of suffrage upon anyone. It prevents the States, or the United States, however, from giving preference, in this particular, to one citizen of the United States over another on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. Before its adoption, this could be done. It was as much within the power of a State to exclude citizens of the United States from voting on account of race, & color, as it was on account of age, property, or education. Now it is not. If citizens of one race having certain qualifications are permitted by law to vote, those of another having the same qualifications must be. Previous to this amendment, there was no constitutional guaranty against this discrimination: now there is. It follows that the amendment has invested the citizens of the United States with a new constitutional right which is within the protecting power of Congress. That right is an exemption from discrimination in the exercise of the elective franchise on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. Under the express provisions of the second section of the amendment, Congress may enforce it by "appropriate legislation".

UNCUT, UNEDITED... JUST POURING SOME PAIN INTO AUDIO Random thoughts to an angel Have you ever met an angel? Someone you just KNOW was anointed from God. You can just look at them and tell they had a whole lotta God in them. For many of us, it coulda been an elder in our family, like a grandmother who always prayed over us, or an uncle who would tell you about how God saved his life. Or maybe a family friend who you would confide in and no matter what you told them, they always had a Bible verse for you.. a word of encouragement .. something to keep you going.. I'm not ready to say goodbye, so I won't. Instead, I'll say thank you. A REAL man of God. Who can even say that and mean it, right? After all, we're so used to seeing people use “God” and “church” as a get rich quick scheme. Selling people false hopes and dreams, taking their money to build their wealth in the name of “God”... and btw that's not of God. God flipped over tables in the temple when they turned it into a flee market instead of a place of praise and worship. but anyways, not Pastor. I remember living in the State Fayette buildings and one day you and Brother Louie came knocking at our door inviting us out to church. It was in that same invitation that I accepted Christ as my savior. Shortly after, my parents decided to join the church. Anyone that knows Perth Amboy knows about the drug infested streets, the violence, the gangs, the broken homes, the poverty, the need for God in our community, and you made that your mission. Thank you. You started a bus ministry to pick up anyone, and I mean anyone, who wanted to attend church but had no way of getting there. Everyone in the city knew our church busses every Sunday morning. You believed in instructing the youth. Instilling the word of God in them. Giving them a moral compass and Godly principles. Showing them a better way. Thank you. 1.He taught me to have a relationship with God. ( trust him through the tests of life) 2.He taught me to be grateful. (Give thanks) 3.He taught me to ask God and I will receive so there's never a need to worry because I'm a child of God so I'm not gonna want for nothing. 4.He taught me the value of hard work. (Faith without works is dead). 5.He taught me to not be a hater. ( love one another) 6.He taught tough love.. there's still consequences for your actions but God still loves you 7.He taught me to always walk in truth because (what's done in darkness always comes to light) Times like these are reminders to ask ourselves, what are we really doing with our life? If you were to drop dead right now, What would ppl say about you? Pastor I hope when you reached Heaven's doors that it was just as beautiful as the Bible described because if anyone was gonna hear “well done thou good and faithful servant” it was gonna be you.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Hillard shares the story of a woman who pressed on and pressed through great physical pains and a lifetime of illness. Commonly called the "woman with the issue of blood", she is a timeless example of perseverance and faith. Dr. Hilliard highlights not only did she press on through her physical trials, but also through a culture that devalued women, and through the financial pressures of paying for treatments that had only made her worse. Her story of faith-filled overcoming is one that can inspire and uplift those struggling through the fight of Breast Cancer. The second half of the show continues the theme of pressing on with another faith-filled example-- Dr. Hilliard's own legacy. His journey from East Orange to Perth Amboy was marked by the tragic death of his father, the same week when Dr. Hilliard became the pastor there. The years that followed had many ups and downs, but through it all God was and is still faithful! As he shares about his 37 -yrs ministry and its impact, Dr. Hilliard lets his listeners know the foundations of building a legacy that will last. If you are pressing on, pressing through, and building a legacy to last, then this episode is for YOU!

A WXXI News investigation finds that local districts have a severe lack of diversity on teaching staffs. Five public school districts have zero African-American teachers on staff; four districts have just one, according to the numbers from the 2015-16 school year. Candice Hudson is the only African-American teacher in the Hilton school district. All 393 of her colleagues are white. We visited Hudson to find her reading to her elementary school students; she teaches English as a New Language for grades three through six. Hudson loves working with the kids, and they seem to share the sentiment. But occasionally, there are awkward moments. "Living in Hilton, they don't see a lot of people of color, so they wanted to touch my skin color, make sure it wasn't rubbing off," she said. "And it was just innocence on their part. They've never seen people like me. The last thing is, 'Can I touch your hair?' I get that a lot.” Hudson spent the first eight years of her career teaching in Perth Amboy
