"Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest Omayra Amaya In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey speaks with Omayra Amaya, the artistic director of the Flamenco Dance Company. They explore Omayra's rich background in flamenco, her family's legacy, and the cultural roots of flamenco dance. Omayra shares her journey from childhood performances to founding her own dance company, emphasizing the emotional and expressive nature of flamenco. The conversation also highlights the importance of live performances and the connection between dancers and audiences. Omayra discusses her upcoming performance and the influence of gypsy culture on flamenco, providing insights into the artistry and passion behind this vibrant dance form. Omayra Amaya is modern flamenco dancer and choreographer deeply rooted in proud gypsy tradition. The daughter of flamenco dancers Olga and Curro Amaya and grandniece of the legendary Carmen Amaya, Omayra brings new relevance to flamenco while never losing sight of her legacy. Omayra first appeared on stage with her parents' company as a 3-year-old and often interrupted their performances. Her first choreographed role came at age 12, when she performed as her father's partner. Since then, she has developed a style that is both elegant and emotional, and her powerful performances and impeccable technique have won her fans all over the world. Omayra and her company have performed at Lincoln Center and the Players Theater in New York City; flamenco festivals in Madrid, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles; the Shanghai Theater Center in Shanghai and the Guo Tai Theater in ChongQin, China; and in a critically acclaimed nine-month residency at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. Omayra has also appeared on film: She was the subject of “Gypsy Heart,” a documentary by Jocelyn Ajami, and performed with Steve Martin in “The Pink Panther II.” The Omayra Amaya Flamenco Dance Company, based in Miami, Florida, performs all over the world under the artistic direction of Omayra Amaya. Founded in 1994, the company is grounded in flamenco's centuries-old rhythms, traditional structure and deep emotions, yet also stretches to embrace world music and Jazz, innovative staging and modern movement. Critics have hailed Omayra Amaya's choreography as “mesmerizing,” “intense,” and “stylish” and described the company's world-class dancers, singers, and musicians as having “a knock-your-socks-off synergy.” https://www.omayraamaya.com/ Upcoming Performances: https://www.omayraamaya.com/performances/ “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey wherever you listen to your podcasts. https://dancetalkwithjoannecarey.com/ Follow Joanne on Instagram @westfieldschoolofdance Tune in. Neil Simon's Tony-winning romantic comedy Barefoot in the Park is currently being performed at the Ukiah Players Theater until the 31st of the month. The play, originally written to take place in the 60s, in fact, takes place in 1982 in the Ukiah players theater's rendition. The change is an ode to the 40th anniversary of the theater, says director Eric Ward. With 80s-inspired costumes, soundtrack, and set props, the play follows a young newlywed lesbian couple who have just moved to New York City in a teeny apartment on the top floor. Corie, played by Grey Wolfe-Smith, is an interior designer whose colorful personality is expressed with a rainbow wardrobe. Her wife Paula, played by Amanda Baguley, is beginning her law career and is the opposite of Corie, Paula is always anxious, concerned, and just trying to get some sleep. From the director's notes on the couple's dynamic: “opposites attract, but what makes someone easy to love, can also make them very hard to live with.”

There isn’t much the pandemic hasn’t impacted, including the schedule at Community Players Theater. The theater's original plan was to stage “Elf-the Musical” for the holiday season. Instead--for the COVID season--the organization has created an original, virtual production laced with Christmas music and touched with nostalgia. It's premiering on Facebook Live, Friday, Dec. 18 before migrating over to the theater's YouTube channel. “Home for the Holidays” harkens back to seasons past, when Community Players , as a way of giving back to their loyal audience, would host a holiday movie night at the theater, complete with cartoons, family films and sing-alongs. “We wanted to change things up a little bit,” said Chris Terven, treasurer for Community Players Theater (CPT). “We did a straight review called “On with the Show” earlier this year. For the holidays, however, we wanted to try and make it more of a story-driven scenario.” “We chose holiday songs and had people put in applications,

Sarah Pappalardo is the co-founder of Reductress, the first and only satirical women’s magazine. Reductress is a hilarious website conceived, developed, and run by Sarah and her co-everything, Beth Newell. Sarah tells Writers' Bloc all about how she and Beth took an idea and made it into an actual product, and trust me, there's more to it than meets the eye. So it's good that you'll mainly be using your ears from here on out. We also get into a welcome and substantive conversation about women in comedy and some of the challenges they face that aren't always understood or even recognized by their male associates. It's long overdue on Writers' Bloc and I think you're going to enjoy hearing it. Sarah has also produced a small handful of documentary shorts, including Reverence , which was featured in IFC Theater's DOCNYC this year. And she's written several plays including Cold, which was produced at the Plays and Players Theater last summer in Philadelphia. I hope you'll be as pleased with this episode as I am. And, as usual, if not - your money back. (WINK!) Now get to listenin'! Or, if it suits you better, you can listen on iTunes. See if I care!
The Shotgun Players came together in 1992 when a group of 11 theater artists decided to put on a play in the only reasonable space they had available to them -- the basement of a local pizza parlor. This became their home base for five years and the site of a half-dozen performances a year. Since then, the Shotgun Players have worked in more than 30 different venues, including church basements, print shop back rooms, university stages, outdoor arenas and even in front of inmates at San Quentin Prison. Over the years, their hard work has earned them a wide subscriber base, critical acclaim and devoted audiences.
Since igniting a national debate with their adaptation of Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ego Po held a forum at Plays and Players Theater on the subject of Performing Race in America. Panelist Dr. Ania Loomba [UPenn Catherine Bryson Chair of the English Department], Dr. Camille Charles [Head of Africana Studies and Professor of Sociology at UPenn], Lane Savadove [Ego Po Artistic Director], Paule Turner [Choreographer/Actor] and Ed Swidey [Actor] discussed openly with audience members and guests on the topics of “race” and “racism” in Ego Po’s reversed cast portrayal of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the world at large. Challenging terminology such as “post racial society” and “color blind casting”, the panel and audience charge the flood gates for a much deeper discussion. Out & About gets the inside scoop!!!
