Scott sits down with a former student, Alyssa Carol, for a heartfelt and lovely conversation about Alyssa's pathway towards higher education at the University of Michigan's famed Musical Theatre BFA and making her Broadway debut as an original Broadway cast member in Andrew Lloyd Webber's brand new musical, BAD CINDERELLA. And while in many ways Alyssa is living what from the outside looks to be a Broadway Cinderella story… she comes to the podcast to share her personal journey to this moment to highlight the fact that the road to Broadway is rarely glamorous or picture book perfect, but this journey is often a deeply satisfying, valuable and artistically illuminating process. Alyssa Carol is a performing artist originally from Orange County, CA. She grew up dancing, singing and acting and eventually attended the Orange County School of the Arts to study Musical Theatre from 7th-12th grade where she discovered a deeper sense of her artistry and the cathartic nature of performing. And I had the privilege to be her conservatory director for her junior and senior year at OCSA. She is currently completing her last semester at The University of Michigan in their BFA Musical Theatre program remotely from NYC… so that she could join the original cast as a swing of the Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's BAD CINDERELLA covering 9 tracks and triumphantly made her Broadway debut during previews on March 9th. At the University of Michigan she was featured in productions of The House of Bernarda Alba, Hair, Michael McElroy's Sonnets, Soliloquies and Soul, The Wild Party; she made her professional debut as the female swing in The Ogunquit Playhouse staging of The Nutty Professor; At OCSA, she played Charity in SWEET CHARITY, Olive in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, was in the ensemble of OCSA's productions of Jasper in Deadland, Footloose as an Associate Choreographer (with Emily Baggerly) on an epic production of EVITA. On a personal note, Alyssa is a light in this world and a ferocious quadruple threat - actor, dancer, singer AND creative/maker. She is a wonderful example of leading with the love of an artform, and practicing that abundant mindset at every turn of the creative process. In this episode, we talk about the many facets of her talent and creative interest; what helped her be her authentic self in audition settings; How she decided to say YES to a school like University of Michigan; And a touching story of being guided by the legendary Broadway dancer and choreographer, Ann Reinking, just weeks before her passing. If you saw a photograph of Dick Backus and you thought - "I think I know him!" it may be because you are of a certain age when you watched daytime soaps like Ryan's Hope or went to see Eugene O'Neill's "Ah Wilderness" at the Ogunquit Playhouse, or you even went to see "Butterflies are Free" on Broadway. These are just a few of the gems that Richard Backus, born, and still living, right here in New Hampshire, has to his credit.Today, however, you are more likely to find him going door to door in his hometown of New Boston or one of the other towns in Hillsborough District 42 running for the NH Legislature. This was not how Dick saw himself spending time in his golden years, but his deep concern for the loss of community among our citizens and our elected officials has drawn him into the fray. I caught up with Dick recently over Zoom and we chatted about running for the legislature, always with the thread of rebuilding community running through the discussion and how rebuilding impacts and is impacted by so many of the challenges we face in our lives. How do we rebuild a sense of community when our commitment to public education is under fire? How do we restore community when more than 50% of our population are denied bodily autonomy? These and other issues compelled Dick to do something he never expected to do, to run for public office.
Chat with Klea Blackhurst, actress, singer and comedienne. Most recently she appeared as Miss Lemon in The Nutty Professor in the summer of 2022 at the Ogunquit Playhouse. We talk about that production, her career, and play songs from her past shows.

In this episode, Jennifer talks to Analisa Leaming about learning to separate your emotions from your thoughts, being willing to examine what is on the other side of fear, and using our bodies as the vessel through which feelings can pass. They both discuss what creativity means to them & the notion of embracing possibility over probability. Plus, Analisa shares tools from her work with the Paradox Process. About Analisa: Analisa Leaming is an actor/singer/coach/speaker/storyteller/risker-taker + perspective expander. (Not necessarily in that order.) She has appeared in the Broadway productions of School of Rock, Hello, Dolly!, The King and I, and On the Twentieth Century. Additionally, she has been seen regionally at the MUNY, KC Starlight, North Shore Music Theatre, Ogunquit Playhouse and Barrington Stage, to name a few. When not on stage you'll find her unraveling the query “How do we live the big, rich, beautiful life we desire independent of our résumé, bank account and society's definition of success?” As a coach + speaker she uses the Paradox Process to free artists from limiting beliefs and return to their power, wisdom and creativity. Analisa is also the creator and host of the podcast A Balancing Act. Her proudest creation yet, though, is her 2-year-old son, Gabey. Analisa's IG: @Analisaleaming Want to coach with Jennifer? Fellow actor and podcaster, Clayton Howe, riffs on the business of auditioning as well as creating new work and making a difference in the world...whether that world is our own theater community or a larger presence influencing millions. He even brings up one influencer, Casey Neistat, who is a filmmaker and was ticketed here in NYC for not riding his bike in the bike lane. Through his videos and mission to fight back against the ticket, he ended up exposing a flaw in the enforcement of bike lanes and galvanized a strong following behind him. Watch the video that started it all. Notice the 22+ million views so far! Okay, now back to Clayton...he and I first met during my contract with Disney Cruise Line. He was Vocal Captain and became a true friend on the ship. Since being back on land, our careers have led us in similar directions as we pursue more theater gigs around the country. Born and raised on Long Island and schooled at State University of New York (SUNY), Clayton has a resume that stretches from New York theater to regional theater and beyond. He most recently performed in From Here to Eternity at Ogunquit Playhouse and just finished a production at Gateway Playhouse for Cabaret. All of this has brought Clay to a higher understanding of what it means to change the world through storytelling, which is why he created his podcast Entertainment(x). Clayton believes in understanding the roots of one's successes and struggles so others can learn from them and live a more fulfilled life...sounds familiar, eh? Much like WINMI, Clayton brings in names you might recognize, names you won't, and names you don't yet. In fact, in the coming weeks he'll be bringing me on his show. So stay tuned as your favorite host turns into Clayton's favorite guest! :) Follow Clayton on Twitter and Instagram. ----------- Please consider buying me a coffee to support this work that goes into each episode. Lorenzo Lamas-Craig (born January 20, 1958) is an American actor. Lamas-Craig is known for playing Lance Cumson on the popular 1980s soap opera Falcon Crest, Reno Raines on the 1990s crime drama Renegade, and Hector Ramirez on the daytime soap opera The Bold and The Beautiful. Lamas appeared in reality television, served as a judge on ABC television's short-lived Are You Hot? and starred in his own reality show,Leave it to Lamas, a series about his real-life family.Early lifeLamas-Craig was born in Santa Monica, California, the son of Argentine actor Fernando Lamas and Norwegian-American actress Arlene Dahl. He is the stepson of swimming film star Esther Williams, who married his father when Lorenzo was 11 years old. Williams was also the best friend of Jane Wyman, who would later play along with Lamas-Craig on Falcon Crest. Lamas-Craig was brought up in Pacific Palisades, California, and moved to New York City in 1971, when he was 13 years old. He graduated from the Admiral Farragut Academy in Pine Beach, New Jersey, in 1975.Acting careerLonging to be an actor since the age of five, Lamas first studied acting in Tony Barr's Film Actors Workshop and quickly thereafter obtained his first TV acting role in 1976. He had a supporting role in the 1978 film Grease. Early in his career, he also had guest-starring parts in Switch, Sword of Justice, Dear Detective, Secrets of Midland Heights, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat and Hotel. In 1980, Lamas auditioned for and won the role of Jane Wyman's playboy grandson and henchman, Lance Cumson, for the pilot of a new series entitled The Vintage Years. The pilot was later retooled to become the hit prime time drama series Falcon Crest. During a 2006 TV interview with a Norwegian television team, Lamas said that to get the role on Falcon Crest, he had auditioned twice and beat out five other guys for the part. During his stint on Falcon Crest, Lamas was nominated for two Soap Opera Digest Awards and a Golden Globe Award. Lamas was the only actor to appear in all 227 episodes of the series. In an interview, Lamas said of Jane Wyman's persona into a hard-working legend, not a diva, who referred to her as a friendly woman on Falcon Crest: "With Jane, she expected you to know your lines, but she played poker with the crew at lunch. She was just a great gal; and I think that set the tone for the rest of us. She wasn't a 'spoiled diva,' and believe me, if anybody had a right to be a 'spoiled diva,' it was Jane because she has done so much, Oscar Award-winner, I mean, incredible actress, and she was just like clockwork, right there on time, always knew her lines, always ready to rehearse and she had this great affable quality. You just never talked about Ronald Reagan, that's all, that was one thing we never did, everything else was opened." At the beginning of the ninth and final season of Falcon Crest, off-camera, Lamas received some devastating news about his TV grandmother when she was sent to the hospital that he paid visit to see her to offer her some words of comfort.[1] After cancellation, he did not keep in touch with her for years, on September 10, 2007, he lost his TV grandmother and decades-long friend. Prior to Wyman's death, Lamas released a statement: "Next to my parents, Jane was the most influential person in my young career," he added, "She has left an incredible body of work and accomplishments that cannot go without being recognized and celebrated. I will miss her greatly."In 1984, Lamas was nominated for Worst Actor at the Golden Raspberry Awards for his performance in the film Body Rock. Lamas also performed a song on the soundtrack for this film, and the track "Fools Like Me" became his only single to date to crack theBillboard Hot 100 chart. In the early 90s, he began carving out a niche for himself as the next big action-hero, showing off his martial-arts skills and starring in such movies as the Snake Eater-trilogy, Terminal Justice, Gladiator Cop, Bounty Tracker, and many similar low-budget action-films, that unfortunately failed to reach a mainstream-audience.However, in 1992, Lamas played the role of the falsely accused cop Reno Raines in the syndicated series Renegade. The series was seen in over 100 countries,[citation needed] and during its final season, it moved from first-run syndication to the USA Network. The show ended in 1997 after a run of five seasons. From February 2004 until February 2007 Lamas played the role of Hector Ramirez on the CBS daytime soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. In August 2007, Lamas starred as the King of Siam in The King and I at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine. That fall, he performed at Kean University Premiere Stages in Union, New Jersey, in the title role in Steven Dietz's Dracula. Lamas performed as El Gallo in The Fantasticks at the Casa Mañana Theatre in Fort Worth, Texas, in June 2008. In June 2009, Lamas returned to the Ogunquit Playhouse as Zach in A Chorus Line.Lamas began appearing in the Zaxby's restaurant chain television advertisements in May 2008.In 2008, Lamas appeared in season 2 of CMT's Gone Country. In 2009, he starred in the Asylum's Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus as Alan Baxter, a government agent who wants to destroy both the Mega Shark and the Giant Octopus to protect the world from their destructive fights.
