William Sarradet and Gabriel Martinez discuss two films from the late 70s whose protagonists embark on slow journeys and a third film that stages Hamlet inside Grand Theft Auto. "I was completely awestruck. I was really grateful to see that yes it is true that you can make fictional film that is relatable and doesn't have to rely so much on artifice to be interesting or entertaining." See related readings here: https://glasstire.com/2025/02/09/art-dirt-in-the-zone-film-roundup/ This week's podcast is sponsored in part by Discovery Green in Downtown Houston, which through February 16 is presenting ATLAS, an immersive installation by Jen Lewin. The piece features 24 oversized and ethereal glowing moths. The majestic creatures are suspended from the trees and react to the movement of visitors. Today's ‘results interview' with South African super entrepreneur Discovery co-founder Adrian Gore goes well beyond a recap on solid financials for the year to the end of June. Discovery's now widely mimicked ‘shared value' business model has delivered superb returns for a group which has substantial businesses in SA and the UK, plus an enviable list of big-name partners whose operations circle the world. But Gore reckons if he were to do it all again, he'd be even more committed to the group's revolutionary concept where customers are directly rewarded for making positive behavioural changes. And he'd have been more confident when negotiating those deals with global giants. In the interview, he also addresses localised criticism of South African Big Business's apparent support of the political status quo, quantifies the cost of COVID claims - and provides feedback on revolutionary Discovery Green that's bringing some of SA's biggest electricity consumers together to invest in large-scale renewable energy projects. - Alec Hogg

Three-time Emmy winner and KPRC's Houston Life host, Derrick Shore, will be the evening's emcee and DJ Joe Ross will keep the party spinning. GUEST: Barry Mandelhttps://www.discoverygreen.com/rainbowonthegreen Then, we speak with activist Jevon Martin about his mission to establish the Monica Roberts Resource Center. Monica Roberts, the late transgender journalist and groundbreaking advocate, did what most major news outlets and law enforcement fail to do: accurately document the history and lives of trans people throughout the country. After her death in 2020, New York activist Jevon Martin partnered with other LGBTQ advocates to create a resource center in her honor.  “Losing her was like losing our history,” says Martin, a Black trans man who oversees Princess Janae Place, a New York nonprofit designed to help trans folk transition from homelessness to independent living. “This resource center is gonna carry her legacy. It's important to know the people that paved the road that you're walking on.” The Monica Roberts Resource Center (MRRC) will honor trans Pride with its first-ever celebration at 6 p.m. on June 24 at Maceo's, a local events venue owned by a lesbian couple. The free Pride event will include an awards ceremony to recognize trans individuals and business owners in Houston for their service and advocacy.  GUESTS: Jevon Martin https://monicarobertsresourcecenter.godaddysites.com/?fbclid=IwAR1RVNZQ9RwYncg5Q_L8Dl6VzmwH6V_wHx1kF9cuSmhbWvwSagmoDnJtZMs

The Cold Coffee Club went LIVE!!! And we were giving away a Britax Click-Tight car seat! Thanks so much to everyone who joined us for our unedited chat that almost didn't happen! (Y'all, all the technical difficulties came out of the woodworks as we prepped for this fun day!) “Cream and Sugar” Recommendations: Jenny checked out Splashway Water Park in Sheridan, TX. Not only is there a ton of fun there for all ages, but you can bring your own food! That's a huge selling point for mamas on a budget! Ashley is so pumped to take her boys to Big Rivers Waterpark & Adventures to enjoy “wet, dry and aerial fun!” We look forward to sliding down fun slides and making a splash, but also giving ziplining a shot and visiting turtles and baby alligators. There are tons of splash pads all over Houston that provide free fun for your kids! Nottingham Park, Discovery Green, Kemah, Lents Family Park East are just a few of our favorites! The Houston Food Fest has been postponed until November 12. Pundt Park is the perfect “Beach Day” destination without actually going to the beach! Feeding the kiddos during the summer can be so insanely exhausting! How are they always hungry? What do they want? What quick options do we have? Jenny and Ashley explore quick lunch options (sandwiches, trays, quesadillas, fruit, etc) but they also explore a few quick recipes. Pulled Pork Sandwiches Grilled Chicken Apple Sausage (Adells) Chicken thighs with sweet potatoes Chicken Caesar Wraps Kielbasa, peppers, potatoes and onion skillet Mango-Peach Salsa Pork Tenderloin BLT Salad And Jenny loves providing her kids with a schedule for each day so there is still a sense of structure and she isn't bombarded with constant “What are we gonna do today?” Houston Moms “House Blend” Post: We are so thankful for the insights of our editor, Elizabeth Baker, who wrote an incredible post with an important message. The Burden of Summer: What not all Moms can make it Magical reminds us that there are many restrictions that burden moms as they try to create summer magic. We can't all do it all! And that's ok. Breathe, moms. Your kids will be fine and enjoy the summer break without huge family vacations or sleep-away camps. They will be fine! We are wrapping up our regular season, but we will still be posting new episodes every other week as we head into Season 3 of The Cold Coffee Club!

As America tuned in to one of the most momentous State of the Union Addresses in modern time – one that featured a “masks optional” crowd in the House Chamber – the president's message was clear: Go back to work, open up the schools, and “Fill our downtowns again.” That is exactly what Lisa Gray did: She drove to Discovery Green to experience her first full-fledged dinner out at a restaurant in a very long time – a restaurant jam-packed with jolly, rowdy Houstonians. Although the experts say the pandemic remains unpredictable and that a new variant could arise anytime, for one mild Tuesday night in March, Lisa and her fellow Houstonians thoroughly enjoyed what was, at worst, a comforting trough between waves. Today, she and lead producer Dina Kesbeh along with producer Ferrill Gibbs discuss how they feel about being faced with the prospect of trying to enjoy life in Houston like it's 2019. Participants will gather at Discovery Green and then march to Houston City Hall beginning at 9 a.m. The event will also include voter registration stations, speakers, and musical performances. The march will serve as a peaceful protest of dire current events in Texas, including Senate Bill 8, which is tantamount(equivalent)to an unconstitutional ban on abortion; recently passed voter suppression laws; redistricting measures; discriminatory proposals harming the trans community; the inhumane treatment of immigrants along the border and throughout the state; attacks on Asian Americans; and more.  Joining us to add some detail and background information are Robin Paoli and Chris Caldwell.
