ArTEEtude is West Cork´s first art, fashion and design podcast created and produced by Detlef Schlich. He will dive and discover with us and the multi talent Kenny Dread into the unknown and exciting deep ocean of the creative mind. In this podcast, Dread and Schlich speak about Dread´s time as musician, stage-diving into the 1980's Washington D.C. punk-rock scene. He recorded go-go anthem D.C. Groove ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHS7FYDDEVM ) with Static Disruptors in 1982 and toured the East Coast with go-go punks Outrage until 1987. The Static D's and Outrage brought the funk to new-wave clubs like CBGB and Danceteria and had the skinheads skanking at hardcore hall shows. Kenny Dread got his stage name touring ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=3589&v=RjBfz6azC28 ) and recording with the legendary Rastafari punk shaman and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominee H.R. ( http://hrdocumentary.com/ ) , lead singer of Bad Brains ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pUlNfdnsAM ). During the 80's Kenny also promoted concerts and afterhours parties, produced records for D.C. punk groups ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptlUWdZiXbM ) , performed with nyabinghi reggae godfather Ras Michael ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixIEgQmbQYs ) , and recorded with English punk goddess Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGROSJbCPV8 ). The early 90's found Kenny in the South of France performing with American expatriate rock band The Immigrants ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmgY4wQgG2M ) , and collaborating with members of that group to create his first solo foray, the dreamy folk-rock Walkin' Down Your Street ( https://www.kennydread.com/music/walkin-down-your-street/ ). A slow motion move to the West of Ireland inspired a more acoustic mode: The rootsy singer-songwriter album Powderhorn ( https://www.kennydread.com/music/powderhorn/ ) was released in 1997 with contributions from Asian-American guitar wizard Levi Chen and Windham Hill harpist Lisa Lynne ( https://lisalynne.com/windham-hill-winter-solstice/ ) , as well as a licensed adaption of poetry by Michael Ondaatje ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Ondaatje ) , author of The English Patient. Kirtan yoga chanting became a major focus from the turn of the century: Kenny Dread co-founded and produced Chicago chant ensemble Devi 2000 ( https://open.spotify.com/track/09Pxz5sRahmv2N0VdoGixt ) , and performed with kirtan dignitaries Dave Stringer and Bhagavan Das. Schlich is Visual Artist, Film Maker and Ritual Designer, living and loving in West Cork and best known for his Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culture and the video installation Transodin´s Tragedy. He is mainly working in the field of performance, photography, painting, sound, installations, and film. To research our human condition and create art work from this reflection he is using often the methodology of the digital-shaman as alter ego. Due to the pandemie and the following lock down Schlich had to stop his recent project, which was a digital crossover opera called Tribal Loop. Working on a new podcast concept and design, he produced and finally published the ArTEEtude podcast in August 2020. Sean Swain on Jpay and New Documentary About Band Negro Terror This week, we feature an interview with Sean Swain about the JPay system being incorporated into the North Carolina prison system based on his experiences in Ohio, increased tension leading to a riot in mid-April at Piedmont facility and the employment of former Ohio Prison Director Gary Mohr as a consultant to the NC system. Then, documentarian John Rash shares about his latest documentary about an all-black, anti-racist oi punk band from Memphis, TN. This band is called “Negro Terror” and the movie is touring the southeastern U.S. More on that in a moment. Sean Swain on JPay starts at 6:54 In the first portion of this episode, you'll be hearing from anarchist prisoner Sean Swain, but in a slightly different manner, where Bursts gets to ask a few clarifying question in the time we had available. First off, sorry about the call quality, we're still working out our recording ability for VA. When we first started talking to Sean all those years back (November 2013 if you want to hear it) it was because of his resistance to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction's privatization of services through the company Jpay, about which this cantankerous jailhouse lawyer wrote an article about the f'd up relationship between private service providers and prison-crats. Now, North Carolina DPS is employing Gary C. Mohr, former ODRC head, as a consultant and since the move the NCDPS has instituted a more intense privatization and limitation of prisoners ability to receive money on their commissary via the 3rd party corporation Jpay. In response to the restrictions of materials people need in their day to day and the support they can receive from the outside (such as limitations to who can donate to a prisoner and what info they have to give up to Jpay to send material support) has created a powder keg of austerity and tension in the NC system leading to a riot at Piedmont Correctional in mid April. Sean sees reflection of the impacts that Mohr and JPay had in Ohio and what appears to be happening with the same techno-logic in NC. A recent protest took place in the neighborhood of NC Prison Director Kenneth Lassiter and keep an eye out for more, deepening protest and organizing around this issue in NC. Of note, the latest episode of Trouble from sub.Media, features Sean talking about mass incarceration and capitalism in the U.S., echoing some of what he says in this week's episode of our show. Jackie Wang, author of Carceral Capitalism (a really great Materialist approach to looking at racialized mass incarceration in the U.S.), along with Sean, “C” from Hamilton, Sylvie and El Jones talk about the prison industrial complexes in the so-called U.S. & Canada. Really worth a watch. Documentarian John Rash starts at 22:04 In the interests of a headsup, the next segment includes a couple of white folks using an out of date term that could be considered racist. The word is in the title of a documentary film about a band by the same name, and the name is said in the spirit of helping folks more easily access the material. The band has an all Black lineup and is called Negro Terror. John Rash is a documentarian with the Southern Documentary Project who for most of the hour shares about his recent film, entitled "Negro Terror". The film follows the punk oi band from Memphis by the same name and it's three members, Ricardo Fields, Omar Higgins and Ra'id as they play around Memphis, supporting various music scenes, speaking about their project and communities. Omar, the lead singer and bassist, came up as a SHARP (Skinhead Against Racial Prejudice) between Brooklyn, NY, and Memphis, TN, and brings the skinhead approach to the music. Omar Higgins died, tragically, at the age of 38 a few weeks ago and his funeral makes it into the film. John Rash, along with Ricardo (or Rico) and Ra'id, the remaining bandmates, are now touring with this innovative film and engaging audiences in q&a sessions. After this broadcast, you can still catch the presentation in Durham at North Star Church of the Arts on Sunday, May 12th and at Fleetwoods in Asheville on Monday, May 13th (which is tomorrow as of the first broadcast of this show) for two showings, 6:30 and 8:00pm followed by that aforementioned q&a with Rico, Ra'id and John. Proceeds from the merch sales on this short tour and from the entrance to showings is contributing to covering Omar's medical and funeral funds that currently are hanging over the family. Donations can be made at supportomar.com. While this tour is short running, John hopes to show it at various film festivals, so if you're putting on such a thing or have such influence, consider contacting John and Southern Documentary Project to make that happen. If you can't see it on this tour, at some point it'll be available in full for free at southdocs.org. Once they release their final album, Paranoia, there's a chance the film will be available for free on the CD alongside the audio, so keep an eye out. . ... . .. Today I have very fun, cool and special guest – Zeb a/k/a Jamey Dakofsky who is the drummer for Tribal Seeds.   Zeb is from L.A. and has been playing drums since he was 8 years and old and by age 10 he was gigging in a punk and classic rock. All the while playing with various musical ensembles, working on Timpani, hand percussion and full drum set.   He attended the performing arts high school in California and by age 20 he was backing his first Reggae artist Mikey Dread H.R. from Bad Brains hand drumming specialist Ras Michael when came back to the states, his career skyrocketed.   He has worked sessions with Grammy award winning songwriters such as Diane Warren (Aerosmith and Leann Rimes) and worked with top producers such as Ashley Ingram (Des'ree), Randy Jackson and Fabian Cooke (“Lion King” Soundtrack).   In 1994, he helped form Detour Posse which has since become the premiere backing band of International Reggae artists from around the globe. Working over 250 shows a year, sometimes he even plays more than one bill on the show (like he did it the night I saw him live with Tribal Seeds, he also played with Fortunate Youth).   In 2011 Zeb performed with Grammy winning artist Shaggy on the Lopez Tonight and again in 2012 on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.   I had the chance to see Zeb live first hand several weeks ago. They were playing with Fortunate Youth, and Pepper. The Jannus was packed to the gills and it was one of those hot, hot, humid evenings, and you'd never know it as they rocked the audience all night long.   Zeb was gracious enough to grant me an interview. I was so excite to meet him, because I've been listing to Tribal Seeds for about the past three years now and was really digging their sound. So, to get to watch Zeb play the skins was a real treat. His speed, chops, stamina and agility rocked the house.   Zeb's currently is endorsed by Super Natural Cymbals and Kick Port International. His set up is Pearl Prestige Session Drum Set Select Kit  and Pearl Hardware, Roland SPD-SX, Toca Special Edition Congas, LP Bongos and hand percussion and Pro-Mark 5B Oak Sticks.   Zeb's interview will be already in progress as it was the evening of the show and there may be some background noises as we were in the Green room. So, give it a listen and enjoy!   Stay in touch with Zeb at: ZEB'S INSTAGRAM ZEB ON FACEBOOK   Learn more about Tribal Seeds and follow them at:   TRIBAL SEEDS ON FACEBOOK   Check out  Tribal Seeds music or follow them on Tribal on YouTube       Remember, if you like this episode, it would mean the world to me if you shared the love mon!     Rock On & Rock Out!   Dawn-Marie (D.M). "Wondering Where The Lion's At?" (Podcast Title) WILD- email told me this referred to World International Lions' Day... Along with Pan Am live music, while missing tonight's Alejandro Escovedo show, I played forbears Pete, Sheila and Coke Escovedo, and hot sounds from Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Jamaica, and from the Mexican- American Escovedos... Talked a little about election coverage, last Saturday's Tanya Tagaq and Roots shows at City Hall, the Scarbourough Afro Carib Fest Aug 23rd-24th, this week's upcoming free shows, as well as... The wild boar shot and killed by Caledon OPP for the crime of being a wild animal lost in suburbia... Summer Sequels- Mike Duffy Trial is back Pickering people angry at neighbours little kids for making noise in family pool Harper won't visit Toronto-the - City, just 905-land... All over 905, actually, but no 416... All 905 and no 416 should be somebody's local election campaign slogan! Meanwhile, in urbane, cosmopolitan Toronto... Residents in downtown summer hotspots - people who bought their condos near places like Harbourfront- are now mad that people continue to enjoy events at Harbourfront, as they had before them, and, one hopes, forever onward... Also, lobsters are suddenly taking off in China- or, more accurately, lobsters hauled in to Halifax are being flown en masse to Shanhai... And... Bugs! Beer's new best friend? Apparently, scientists have recently learned various bugs produce unique yeasts that can flavour beer... And once more... Simon and Garfunkel- At the Zoo Bruce Cockburn- Wondering Where the Lions Are Big Black- Lion Solomon Linda- Mbube 1939 rendition of this classic, I have talked on the air before about the history of this song, so I kept it brief tonight, and continued... Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus- Rise Jah Jah Children- a very dread, deep roots take on this song... I payed Miriam Makeba's powerful version not so long ago, so I kept it to these two renditions, letting Ras Michael lead the charge/ forward march to reggae, with- Ras Lee- Who Killed the Lion- he is referring to Bob Marley, but it still fits...  Scratchylus started making music in London, UK in the late 1990s. The desire came from performing on well-known sound systems such as Java, Nuclear, Powa, Diamonds, a Girl's Best Friend, and One Love Sound System. It was while working with all these sounds that he was introduced to laying vocals in a recording studio. His creative inspiration comes from artists such as Dennis Brown, Sizzla, Pinchers and Papa San. But his overall inspiration is undoubtedly from His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie, someone for whom he has the highest regard. He has met and had an audience with the President of Gambia, His Excellency President Yaya Jammeh and His Ministers. He has graced the stage with the likes of Luciano, Mikey General, Bushman, Sizzla Kalonji and other well-established artists, performing for well over 35,000 fans.Additionally, he is busy putting the final touches on his soon to be released album, entitled 'RESET THE MINDSET. Kiddus I (born Frank Dowding in Saint Mary Parish, Jamaica, December 1944) is a reggae singer and musician, best known for his appearance in the film Rockers.Dowding was born in 1944, his mother a potter and his father a bookkeeper. He adopted the stage name Kiddus, which is Amharic for "blessed one", after becoming a Rastafarian. In 1971, he set up a Rastafarian commune and craft centre located between uptown and downtown Kingston, which became a unique feature of a city generally divided by social class. Dowding was a member of Ras Michael's Sons Of Negus from 1971 to 1978, singing and playing funde drums. He recorded several self-productions in 1972 with Aston Barrett at Joe Gibbs' studio, but these were not released due to lack of funds. Rockers director Theodoros Bafaloukos had seen Kiddus recording "Graduation In Zion" in 1976, two years before the film was made, and decided to film Kiddus recording the track as part of the movie. www.crsradio.com 661-467-2407

The Congos are a reggae vocal group from Jamaica which formed as the duo "Ashanti" Roy Johnson (tenor) b. Roydel Johnson, 1947, and Cedric Myton (falsetto) b. 1947,  later becoming a trio with the addition of Watty Burnett (baritone) b.early 1950s, have been active on and off from the mid-1970s until the present day. They are best known for their Heart of the Congos album, recorded with Lee "Scratch" Perry.Myton had previously been a member of The Tartans in the late 1960s (along with Prince Lincoln Thompson, Devon Russell and Lindburgh Lewis), and Ras Michael's group, and had recorded with Thompson's Royal Rasses in the mid-1970s. He formed the Congos, initially as a duo with Johnson, recording the single "At the Feast" for Lee "Scratch" Perry. Perry expanded the group to a trio with the addition of Burnett, this line-up recording the classic roots reggae album Heart of the Congos in 1977 at Perry's Black Ark studio. The album featured illustrious backing singers such as Gregory Isaacs, The Meditations, and Barry LLewellyn and Earl Morgan of The Heptones. The album has been described as "the most consistently brilliant album of Scratch's entire career".Perry's previous productions by Max Romeo and Junior Murvin had been huge commercial successes thanks to a deal with Island Records, but Perry was in dispute with Island at the time the Congos' album was finished, so it was released on his own Black Ark label, limiting its success overseas, and causing a rift with the group. www.crsradio.com call- 661-467-2407 caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com

Before analyzing today's music we reviewed the many genres that Jamaica has created. That amazing history includes Mento, Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae, Dub and Dancehall. Reggae sub-genres Nyahbingi, lover's rock, and rub-a-dub are also popular styles. There was a peak in dancehall popularity in the early 2000s followed by a decline in quality reggae. At that time vinyl formats transitioned to CD. Then CDs went out and digital downloads came in. DJs started using laptops to play music and consumers turned to personal electronics. This transitional period led to what we call the reggae revival. The current global dancehall and reggae revival movements are creating genre-bending trends. Artists like Protoje, Chronixx, Kabaka Pyramid, Jesse Royal, Damian Marley, and Koffee are synonymous with such trends.Based on our analysis there either is a new emerging genre, or the concept of genres is simply dead. Distinctions between genres have become blurred and young audiences around the world are embracing that change.References:Lord Fly with Dan Williams - Medley of Jamaican MentoKoffee - ToastCulture - Two Sevens ClashLila Ike - Biggest FanToots and the Maytals - Do the ReggaeReggae Lover Episode 20 - Lee 'Scratch' Perry,Johnny Osborne - Water PumpingReggae Lover Episode 21 - Augustus Pablo,The Skatalites - Guns of NavaroneReggae Lover Episode 120 - Dub.Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus - None of Jah Jah ChildrenHood Celebrity - Walking TrophyKing Tubbys - King of the ArenaEd Sheeran - Shape of YouJustin Beiber - SorryKoffee - RaptureBob Marley - Talking BluesReggae Lover Episode 126 - Dancehall vs ReggaeReggae Lover Episode 133 - The Influence of ReggaeSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reggae-lover/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
