For the first time, we whipped out our passport to go abroad to cover a Division III football story. Twenty-six years into running the website and in the 19th year of the podcast and yes, there can still be new things. A number of Division III schools left the country to give their student-athletes an educational experience and to also play a spring football game, and we followed along with one of those teams and you can follow along with three of them in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. Plus ... This edition of the podcast is sponsored by GameStrat: The Most Reliable & Fastest In-Game Video Replay System on The Market. D-III football coaches should click here to learn more. St. John's went up to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to play the Winnipeg Rifles of the Canadian Junior Football League, and the Johnnies were hoping to learn a little bit more about what they have at quarterback. Since Aaron Syverson has graduated, the Johnnies were looking at five quarterback candidates, one of whom noped out before the trip even started. So four players got snaps up north on Saturday, May 17, and two are in the mix to get the start in Week 1 against Minnesota-Morris. You'll meet them and hear what their receivers, offensive coordinator, and head coach Gary Fasching think of their performance, plus you'll hear about the most Canadian thing ever that happened before the game and meet a few SJU transfers whose names you could be hearing this fall. Carnegie Mellon went to Spain, and we'll find out from coach Ryan Larsen what the Tartans were hoping to get out of their trip, since they lost so many starters and key contributors from a team which had Mount Union on the ropes in the fourth quarter of last year's playoff game. And Hampden-Sydney took its team to Italy, where coach Vince Luvara had a quite different take on what was important for his program and his student-athletes. Plus, you'll be hungry after you hear about the great eating both teams did in Europe! Also, Patrick and Greg will give their take on the top five quarterbacks in D-III football since 1999, and will present two teams which could contend for conference titles after not making the playoffs last year, thanks to two great questions from our mailbag segment. Patrick and Greg cover it all in the latest edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.

Episode 284 Braveheart (1995)   “It's all for nothing if you don't have freedom.” William Wallace. 30 years ago we got this epic movie that won best picture and best director for Mel Gibson. Many loved the movie and many had issues with the lack of historical truths. Either way we have a lot to talk about on this one.  We cover our thoughts on it in this episode. So join us for the discussion and don't forget about our cocktails for this episode.         As always, mix a drink, have a listen, and let us know what you think. We were waiting. Waiting for WIAC play to get started, with its great games seemingly every week. And waiting for UW-Platteville to face an opponent that our Top 25 voters could really measure them up against. Count that a success! Platteville went into La Crosse, Wisconsin, and not only came away with a win, but did so in dramatic, stunning fashion. And UW-Whitewater got back on the winning track in front of so many people you wonder how they could keep track. Patrick also took a tour of Division III football in Western Pennsylvania, with stops at Juniata, at Westminster and at Carnegie Mellon to see the hosts play Wilkes, Washington & Jefferson and Waynesburg, and you'll hear from a number of people involved, plus Carnegie Mellon coach Ryan Larsen joins us to talk about the Tartans in Fast Five. We'll whip you through the big games in Division III from this past weekend. Plus, who's having trying to get one in the 1? Who's pulling through in the 2? What do we see in the 3? Who's looking for more in the 4? Who's looking alive in the 5? And, who's in the mix in the 6? To see a list of all the teams talked about in this podcast, look at the list at the bottom of the post. Math Correspondent Logan Hansen talks about the three biggest playoff leverage games for Week 6, plus gives his usual snapshot for how those top eight seeds are looking. How did that change after this past week's games? Remember, my goodness, people, this is based on projection of how the season will play out and of course, teams with harder schedules might have a harder time making the top eight because they might not actually win all their games. We also hand out game balls to the top performers, pick out the stats of the week, and run through region by region to get some of the other stories you might have missed. And since that never seems to be enough, Greg and Patrick have to pick one more region to tell one more story about on the fly. There's that and so much more in this week's podcast, so give it a listen!

Simon, a senior ambassador with rich knowledge of Scotch heritage (he's a Scotsman so that makes sense), discusses the distinct flavors and intricacies of various Laphroaig and Bowmore whiskies. Simon is also quite the storyteller (I think it's a cultural thing). When it comes to fashion, wait till you hear them talking about tartans and kilts. No spoilers.

Welcome back to the Humans of Tepper Podcast. This week hosts Nikita and Ayush are joined by Chris and Chrissy, both first-year, full-time students at Tepper, to discuss entrepreneurship at Tepper.     Chrissy is from China and came to the US at 16. She triple-majored in Accounting, Marketing, and Information Systems in her undergrad University of Chicago at Urbana Champaign. After graduating, she worked in marketing for a Thai start-up company which started her thinking about entrepreneurship and business development. On the other hand, Chris grew up in the Detroit area of Michigan and has a background in corporate finance for the automotive industry. As he worked in various finance positions, he noticed how many of his higher-ups and mentors had MBAs, which ultimately led him to apply to Tepper.   Tepper is very focused on innovations and analytical aspects, which was a huge draw for Chrissy, who works a lot in the ever-changing marketing landscape. Finding a school with solid entrepreneurship programs was also significant to Chris and Chrissy. Tepper strives to create a safe environment for entrepreneurs because it can be a very scary journey.    The Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship is the heart of the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Tepper and is open to current students and alumni to pursue an entrepreneurial journey. It's a great way to meet others with similar mindsets and goals from many different backgrounds. Additionally, 99 Tartans is an angel investment syndicate of Carnegie Mellon Alumni looking to invest in Carnegie Mellon-founded organizations. The group holds pitch meetings and works to connect start-ups and investors and bring them down the fundraising path.   Many CMU start-ups are tech-based, and Chrissy's start-up is in supplements. So at first, she was a little skeptical about how much Tepper could really do for her and her business. However, there's so much to branding, strategy, and more that cross over in the business world, so having that network of knowledgeable people proved integral. In addition, there are so many programs available that provide a critical environment to entrepreneurs that help you succeed regardless of the industry you're building in.  What You Will Learn:   Background on Tepper students Chris and Chrissy and what brought them to study at Tepper.  Information about the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship and 99 Tartans. This Celtic band didn't stay put in Houston for long though, and soon they were off--traveling all over the U.S., and even abroad. They've performed in Canada, Scotland, and Greece, among other places over the years, as well as providing entertainment on a number of different cruise ships. This great mixture of experiences has allowed the band the opportunity to truly hone their live shows, and put a shine on their ability to play together in a variety of different contexts. It has also given them a great deal of expertise in terms of playing Celtic tunes.   The Rogues are no amateurs when it comes to playing their instruments either, and band members have won prestigious music competitions, including first place in the World Pipe Band Championships in Grade III in 1998. If pressed to describe them, you could say they take their music seriously, but they don't take themselves too seriously, which results in a nice mash up of outstanding musicianship and good fun—it really works out well. Plus, you know a band is not messing around when they wind up with their own tartan in the Scottish Register of Tartans. That's dedication to the Celtic genre at a deep level.   You can't help but notice a full pipe sound and a lot of percussion when you listen to this band play, but they are also capable of music that pulls at the heartstrings. The variety of instruments, arrangements, and pairings keeps things interesting, no matter how familiar the tune. This is especially evident on The Rogues 2013 Christmas album, Hellbound Sleigh, where you'll hear tried-and-true favorites such as “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” in a very different light. Be sure to listen to the "O Holy Night / Ave Maria” track, which has an almost haunting feel to it—in the best possible way. And—don't miss "Jingle Bells/Good King Wenceslas” for a rousing take on this classic that showcases the pipes front and center.   The best part about this festive album though is the fact that there are also a few tracks you won't find in every Christmas collection, making it a great pick for your music rotation this holiday season. Keep it all to yourself and enjoy listening at home, or ship it over to a friend or family member that needs a little bit ‘o cheer in the stocking.   Find out more about The Rogues at therogues.com    If you hear music you love, then support the artists. Like Ben, he received his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University. He started in healthcare consulting before coming to Tepper for his MBA. Alejandra was born in Miami, Florida, and attended Boston University for undergrad. She started in insurance, focusing on equity-backed businesses.   Ninety-Nine Tartans was founded in 2017 by Rob Myer. Their mission is to find CMU-founded startups and connect them to alumni for mentorship, and, to date, there are over 240 alumni who are part of the group. Kara compares it to Tepper's version of Shark Tank! Companies looking to connect can fill out an application on the group's website and meet with an MBA partner to discuss their work and timeline. The minimum requirement is that there's a full-time CMU affiliate on the team. There is an investor application as well. The group looks at industries from across the board and has unique investors from many different backgrounds.     What really attracted Pete to Ninety-Nine Tartans is the amount of autonomy you have as a member in interacting with alumni and mentors interested in the group. MBA is known for its ability to establish a network, and Ninety-Nine Tartans is just another way to do that. The exposure to different industries is really unparalleled, and the avenues to different career options are opened. Alejandra came in a little later, in her second year, and was really drawn to the opportunity the group offered.    The whole concept of MBA students running Ninety-Nine Tartans is actually fairly new and operated a lot like a startup company in itself. It took problem-solving and thinking proactively to figure out how to operate optimally. Moving forward, Pete is very excited to see what they're able to build upon the foundation they've established. Alejandra is also excited to hone in on how to better meet their investors' needs and actively look for startups instead of relying on applications.    The diversity within the group is a fantastic aspect. Alejandra advises to come in with an open mind and go for it in terms of advice for incoming students. When she first started her MBA, she didn't realize how many opportunities were out there that she would have missed had she not been open to exploring them. Try out different activities, see what you like, and see what works. Pete also advises prospective students to check out the club fairs held at many colleges to explore what's out there and what might interest them.  What You Will Learn: What drew Pete and Alejandra to pursue their MBA at Tepper. What the mission of Ninety-Nine Tartans is. What the Ninety-Nine Tartans has to offer CMU-affiliated startups and investors.

The ID Network's series Blood Relatives returns with another title pun and another symbolic lizard lurking about. But in CLASH OF THE TARTANS we have a whole new slew of mysterious objects pointed to throughout the episode and an X-rated set of circumstances that are clearly going to lead to murder (and Kimberly delighting in Katie squirming in her seat). A mother, sister, husband, fiancé, kind-of cousin and a leather clad gentleman who's name is a mystery are all embroiled in some adult activities done in the dark and need to be kept secret. But who is willing to kill to keep that secret? It's just one of many mysteries in this episode that K & K will try to solve. Will an unsettling doll with a drawn on moustache hold the secret to this horrible crime? HIGHLY HIGHLY doubtful. Will it just add to the confusion? You be the judge. So run a bubble bath, grab a cup of tea and enjoy this very special Double Date - AFTER DARK edition episode. Sermons from Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church - Detroit

This is the Blessing of the Tartans that was offered on Scottish Sunday at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church in 2018. Scottish Sunday with a Kirkin' of the Tartans and pipers from St. Andrew's Society of Detroit has been an annual tradition since 1974. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the church has cancelled the service for 2020 because it generally draws more than 500 people to the church for the service of worship.

This sermon was delivered by Rev. Matthew Nickel, Pastor of Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church on Scottish Sunday in November 2018. Scottish Sunday has been an annual tradition of Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church since 1974, hosted each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. It is with great sadness that the church has cancelled Scottish Sunday in 2020 due to the coronovirus pandemic. The service generally brings more than 500 people to worship. We hope to hold the service again in 2021.

Investigation into Flannel You are listening to the Informal investigation podcast This is the podcast where we investigate, experience, and share interesting finds   My name is Asher and lets begin ::Music:: The informal investigation podcast is for entertainment purposes only. We are not responsible if you mess up.  You should always do your own homework.  If you try anything mentioned on this podcast you are doing so at your own risk.  The views presented on this podcast are solely those of the speakers and do not represent any affiliated or unaffiliated organizations. ::music:: Today we are opening an informal investigation into Flannel In case you have been isolating super hard and don't get out much - Let me be the one to tell you flannel season 2020 is here! As you're getting geared up with your favorite soft, warm, and colorful winter garments Do you find yourself asking yourself - Self? What, when, how, and why did we all get flannelized!? Flannel is a soft woven fabric, yep a soft woven fabric, It's really that simple! Originally it was made from wool but now it's made from wool, cotton, synthetic fiber, and I think you can even get it made out of some kind of vegetation. So! What makes it so soft? 2 things It is loosely spun and Flannel  can be brushed for extra softness.  What happens is a fine metal brush scrapes the material raising fine fibers creating a nap - which is just a fancy word for a raised fuzzy surface What about the pattern? Does it need to be tartan? I know big words.  Tartan is that classic pattern seen on flannel shirts with criss crossed horizontal and vertical bands of different colors.  The answer to this is no.  Flannel is just the soft fuzzy material that is fuzzified using the 2 methods we just mentioned. ::music::  But tartans!  Common now!  Tartans deserve a little side tract here. Tartans have a rich history in Scotland.  Each clan was represented by a different tartan pattern.  Believe it or not you can officially register your own pattern today no matter where in the world you live, who your ancestors are, or your personal feelings on flannel - that's equal opportunity for ya.   Just go to tartanregister.gov.uk and make it official.  It seems you design a weave, then name it, and register it for the meer price of 70 pounds.  You should prob check that no one has already registered your tartan or your application can be rejected and you will be chased down by an angry Scotish clan. Of Course, I immediately started sketching out my tartan but tartans are going to have to have their own episode. This is about flannel! My first exposure to flannel was from Osh Kosh Bigosh before I can even remember.  My first memorable flannel experience was in grade school.  My mom bought me a wardrobe full of beautiful flannel.  It's warm, soft, and colorful - what could go wrong, rite?   Unfortunately my esteemed grade school colleagues did not feel the same way.  At that time I suppose flannel was not the coolest thing. I was made fun of a bit and some people called me raymor and flanneligan haha i know.  Fortunately, I was always a big dude so there was a limit to how far they were willing to take this.  I don't actually remember caring all that much but it likely made an impression because my next phase was Hawaiian shirts which are so not fuzzy they feel slick. As you can tell I was always the super cool kid.  ::music:: I was trying to figure out the origin story of flannel but I was not able to find all that much.  There is no official book on flannel and when you google it you find vague stories by every company that sells flannel.  After reading the same useless information 25 times I gave up and went with what I had. The party line seems to be flannel is of welsh origin sometime in the 17th century.  Makes sense...

Plaid tidings’ to you and all of your kin! During the winter holidays, plaids and tartans look so festive. Dolls are the perfect plaid-sewing partners, because sewing for a doll, gives me the motivation to engage in some sample sewing. And at this time of year they remind me of  dollies, and doll clothes that were sewn for me, at this special time of year – like the mini wardrobe of Barbie clothes my aunt gracie sewed and sent me one winter holiday, as well as the red courderoy jumpers and dotted slip dresses, Mama made for our chatty Kathy dolls, as well as for me and my sister Trisha in the winter I was 4 (with matching girl jumpers).   K.R's green plaid jumper is based on an  American Girl free doll clothes pattern in "Mollie's Pretty Clothes"   The doll featured in this sewing project is Katie Rose. K.Rose is an Engel-Puppen doll. (Engel-Puppen doll link - has history of these dolls) Sample sewing may not sound very exciting, but sewing an 18” (think American Girl sized) plaid doll’s dress gave me a chance to – in a very limited amount of time - practice my pattern cutting out skills for plaid fabric, as well as experiment with a new-to-me technique for improved  plaid matching This  show is all about the technicos/techniques. My goals with this doll’s dress were to work on: Primero/First)Careful layout of multiple princess-seamed bodice pieces - definitely less nerve racking for a doll, and gives me confidence to work on the red plaid princess-seamed shirt I’m muslin’ing - as well as the plaid nightshirt I’ll plan to be making soon for my husband. Entonces/Then)I tried Fusible Thread to decrease slippage during sewing (a new-to-me technique for enhanced/ improved  plaid matching).  Also useful /good idea for sewing on patch pockets   I used crafster to look for help regarding my challenges with fusible thread. Response from ~T Read more: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=442125.0#ixzz3ufLODkuJ https://www.byannie.com/shop/product/fusible-thread/ “She calls for low heat, so I am guessing you just had the iron too hot. She also describes another technique for using it with aluminum foil as your pressing cloth..letting that cool and peeling it off, to create a design on fabric. Like a dimensional paint overlay technique? You Craftsters always inspire me to hunt for new ideas    I Goggled 'Fusible Thread Instruction' for this one. There are more on there as well. ~T” I love using succulents all over the house during the festive season. This simple arrangement provides the perfect place for Katie Rose to hang out. The Congos are a reggae vocal group from Jamaica which formed as the duo "Ashanti" Roy Johnson (tenor) b. Roydel Johnson, 1947, and Cedric Myton (falsetto) b. 1947,  later becoming a trio with the addition of Watty Burnett (baritone) b.early 1950s, have been active on and off from the mid-1970s until the present day. They are best known for their Heart of the Congos album, recorded with Lee "Scratch" Perry.Myton had previously been a member of The Tartans in the late 1960s (along with Prince Lincoln Thompson, Devon Russell and Lindburgh Lewis), and Ras Michael's group, and had recorded with Thompson's Royal Rasses in the mid-1970s. He formed the Congos, initially as a duo with Johnson, recording the single "At the Feast" for Lee "Scratch" Perry. Perry expanded the group to a trio with the addition of Burnett, this line-up recording the classic roots reggae album Heart of the Congos in 1977 at Perry's Black Ark studio. The album featured illustrious backing singers such as Gregory Isaacs, The Meditations, and Barry LLewellyn and Earl Morgan of The Heptones. The album has been described as "the most consistently brilliant album of Scratch's entire career".Perry's previous productions by Max Romeo and Junior Murvin had been huge commercial successes thanks to a deal with Island Records, but Perry was in dispute with Island at the time the Congos' album was finished, so it was released on his own Black Ark label, limiting its success overseas, and causing a rift with the group. www.crsradio.com call- 661-467-2407 caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com
