In 1972, Bob Marley signed with CBS Records in London and embarked on a UK tour with soul singer Johnny Nash. While in London the Wailers asked their road manager Brent Clarke to introduce them to Chris Blackwell, who had licensed some of their Coxsone releases for his Island Records. The Wailers intended to discuss the royalties associated with these releases; instead, the meeting resulted in the offer of an advance of £4,000 to record an album.Since Jimmy Cliff, Island's top reggae star, had recently left the label, Blackwell was primed for a replacement. In Marley, Blackwell recognized the elements needed to snare the rock audience: "I was dealing with rock music, which was really rebel music. I felt that would really be the way to break Jamaican music. But you needed someone who could be that image. When Bob walked in he really was that image."The Wailers returned to Jamaica to record at Harry J's in Kingston, which resulted in the album Catch a Fire. The Wailers' first album for Island, Catch a Fire, was released worldwide in April 1973, packaged like a rock record with a unique Zippo lighter lift-top. Initially selling 14,000 units, it received a positive critical reception. It was followed later that year by the album Burnin' which included the song "I Shot the Sheriff". Eric Clapton was given the album by his guitarist George Terry in the hope that he would enjoy it. Clapton was impressed and chose to record a cover version of "I Shot the Sheriff" which became his first US hit since "Layla" two years earlier and reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on 14 September 1974.Many Jamaicans were not keen on the new reggae sound on Catch a Fire, but the Trenchtown style of Burnin found fans across both reggae and rock audiences. The Wailers were scheduled to open 17 shows in the US for Sly and the Family Stone. After four shows, the band was fired because they were more popular than the acts they were opening for. In July 1977, Marley was diagnosed with a type of malignant melanoma under his right big toe.Contrary to urban legend, this lesion was not primarily caused by an injury during a football match that year, but was instead a symptom of already-existing cancer. He had to see two doctors before a biopsy was done, which confirmed acral lentiginous melanoma. Unlike other melanomas, which usually appear on skin exposed to the sun, acral lentiginous melanoma occurs in places that are easy to miss, such as the soles of the feet, or under toenails. Although it is the most common melanoma in people with dark skin, it is not widely recognized and was not mentioned in the most popular medical textbook of the time. Marley rejected his doctors' advice to have his toe amputated (which would have hindered his performing career), citing his religious beliefs, and instead, the nail and nail bed were removed and a skin graft was taken from his thigh to cover the area.Despite his illness, he continued touring and was in the process of scheduling a 1980 world tour. The album Uprising was released in May 1980. The band completed a major tour of Europe, where it played its biggest concert to 100,000 people at San Siro stadium in Milan, Italy. After the tour, Marley went to the United States, where he performed two shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City as part of the Uprising Tour.He collapsed while jogging in Central Park and was taken to the hospital, where it was found that his cancer had spread to his brain, lungs, and liver.Marley's last concert took place two days later at the Stanley Theater (now The Benedum Center For The Performing Arts) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 23 September 1980. His Message (Don't Gain The World & Lose Your Soul, Wisdom Is Better Than Silver Or Gold. Love the life you live. Live the life you love. The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively) Remember One Love, One Heart...

Bob Marley is known as the peace and love reggae superstar, but the truth of who he really was is a bit more complicated. After gunmen raided his home, putting bullets into him, his wife, his manager and his guitar player, Bob survived. But the lives of his assassins—all of them—were eventually brought to violent, horrific ends. And their killers were never found. Many think the perpetrator was an angry young man from the Trenchtown ghetto, who was called, by those who feared him, “Screwface." Was it Bob Marley, Rasta Vigilante? This week Brian is joined by Robbie and Kenne from Doomtrigger.Doomtrigger are a 4-piece metal band hailing from Stellenbosch, South Africa. Initially intended as a solo studio project, founding member Kenne Loubser started writing a selection of songs during Covid lockdown in 2020. A few weeks into the journey, Kenne learnt that a friend and fellow metal enthusiast, Jason Smith, had just returned to South Africa after teaching in Vietnam for 3 years. Fast forward 3 years, Kenne approached Jason about collaborating on a single. This turned into Jason becoming a full time member and lead vocalist of the project. Realizing they were onto something special, they knew Doomtrigger had to be a full band. The search was on.In June 2021 Drummer Etienne Nel aka "Frank", was added to the group. Kenne and Frankbecame friends in their college days and together with another close friend, lived together in their early working years. During that time, they had regular jam sessions playing mostly Slipknot covers and metal improv - much to the dismay of conservative neighbours in the area. Predominantly a rock drummer, this was the first time Frank started exploring metal drumming. It wasn't until 12 years later, upon joining DOOMTRIGGER, that his true potential as a metal drummer was unlocked.Eventually an idea sparked to invite Robert Blair, former rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist of hard rock outfit Four A Penny, to the pack. Ken and Rob were former band mates in the aforementioned group and had become good friends over the years. Appreciating Rob's love and passion for the metal genre, Ken had in fact been sharing snippets of DOOMTRIGGER material with Rob over the course of a few months as asoundboard for thoughts and feedback. So, when Rob was eventually approached in July 2021, it was an easy conversation. The pack knew that over and above the fact that Rob would settle comfortably on bass, he would also bring the edge of a second extreme vocal to the mix, nudging the band's offering to a new dimension. Finally, the line-up was complete. In its short existence the band has already made notable waves in the local metal scene in South Africa, attracting attention from industry peers and metal fans alike. The band made their live debut at Trenchtown on 11 June 2022 and saw the formation of a pit mere moments into their first song, a rare sight for a band on live debut, let alone first on the bill. The energy continued through the set and the reception was more than what the group could have hoped for. All and all a successful debut with praise from organisers, supporting bands and newly acquired fans alike, leaving the band humbled and hungry to continue their mission.Tune in to hear all about:The history of Doomtrigger. The EP 'Enter The Cosmic'Concert experiences including playing Metal4Africa '22.Future plans including the next EP 'Dark Continuum'And much much more!Find Doomtrigger here:https://www.instagram.com/doomtriggercore/https://www.facebook.com/doomtriggercorehttps://ditto.fm/enter-the-cosmicFind CTMU here:https://linktr.ee/ConcertsthatmadeusNewsletter: https://concertsthatmadeus.aweb.page/p/f065707b-2e34-4268-8e73-94f12bd2e938If you would like to support the show you can do so by rating/reviewing us on Itunes and Spotify or by signing up at https://www.patreon.com/ConcertsthatmadeusSave 10% on Band Builder Academy membership by following this link https://bandbuilderacademy.com/Brian_Concerts/join and using promo code "concerts" at signup. Lee Jaffe, a cross-disciplinary visual artist, musician, and poet, took photos of his friend, Jean-Michel Basquiat, when they traveled abroad in 1983. As a photographer, Jaffe had a connection to Basquiat, and their time spent together resulted in an archive of imagery that captured one of the art world's true legends through an unfiltered and authentic lens. “For me, watching him [Jean-Michel] paint reminded me of the times I would sit and play harmonica while Bob Marley, with his acoustic guitar, would be writing songs that were eventually to become classics,” Jaffe says. “With Jean and Bob, it seemed like they were channeling inspiration coming from an otherworldly place.”Basquiat and Jaffe connected over reggae music. It was the early 1980s in New York. Jaffe had been a member of Bob Marley's band, producer on Peter Tosh's first solo album. and collaborated with art world figures Helio Oiticica, Gordon Matta Clark, and Vito Acconci. Jaffe is the author of Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossroads."And it was a time of great political repression. People on the left were disappearing. There was group of artists and musicians and writers who were creating things against the military government in Brazil. When I arrived in Rio in 1969, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, they had been imprisoned. They were in exile. They were let out of prison on condition they would leave the country. They were living in England. It was dangerous to be an artist saying anything against the government. And it was the time of the Vietnam War, towards the end of the Civil Rights Movement. I mean, it's never really ended, but...there were the assassinations of all the Black Panthers and Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, and then RFK in '68, which very much pushed me into - I mean, I wanted to travel, I wanted to find out what the world was like, but - it was kind of a last straw when RFK was assassinated because then it was like, there is no law. The United States has no law. If there's political opposition, you'll just die. And then I was in Brazil, and it was very palpable. There was no disguise. There was no veneer.”www.leejaffe.comwww.rizzoliusa.com/book/9780847871841/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgPhoto: Bob Marley in Trenchtown, downtown Kingston, Jamaica, after football at the Boys' Town field, 1974. As I write these notes, we have just learned of the shooting of 4 year old Arianna Delane, George Floyd's niece, who was asleep in her bed when a yet-to-be-identified person shot into her apartment.Tomme lists Marcus Garvey as one of the north stars of Pimento Relief Services, and quotes him saying: “Take advantage of every opportunity; where there is none, make it for yourself.”Michelle refers to her experience at Sexual Violence Law Center, talks about the Harlem Nutcraker by Spectrum DanceTomme refers to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals which we could use to see how US cities are developing - as the US holds other countries to these standards…Process: Here are a few notes about what Tomme lists as how Pimento Relief Services was built to serve the community:They took a meeting place that already existed as a safe, community-based space: Pimento Jamaican Kitchen and Rum BarFriends and community members were invited to identify their own needs!Needs included food as the primary need for which they threw a food drive. (Tomme points out that Minneapolis is the food headquarters of the world, and yet Minneapolis had a food desert in their city.)They coordinated an active list of needs for those on the frontlines of liberation - reporting needs out in real time via social media (needs ranged from fire extinguishers to insulin, diapers to food.)A week later, they threw a healing event, involving yoga, art, and other healing modalitiesThe following week they held a gathering with 150 of the top leaders of the community in the small backyard of the restaurant - including religious leaders, the mayor, business leaders etc talking about how these groups could provide services to those on the frontline of liberation in the communityTomme defines liberation in three categories:Economic Liberation: How do we create more Black business leaders, how do we elevate folks in their occupations?Social Liberation: Tomme includes Food Justice, Social Justice, Academic Justice (women in academia, accurate political and social history,Political Liberation: How do we get people to show up for voting, running for office - what resources do they need to run their campaign, political action committee that funds candidatesBig pieces of wisdom:Tomme drops wisdom through the entire episode, from how we use consultants, how we create community, how to center people from the beginning, what liberation looks like and overarching philosophy about our highest purpose. But here are just a few quotes: “Start with Trust. Trust the people you're serving to know what they need, and know what they want...I simply got out of the way and allowed them to build the community that they needed in the space that I happened to be a steward of.”“Growing up in Jamaica, we recognized that even if there is just one loaf of bread…that's enough to feed our whole community.”“The roots of it go back to that greater responsibility to serve one's community. Because our purpose is much bigger than we are. And when we think of our community itself, I feel as if each and every one of us have a greater responsibility. So for example, as a black man, I have a greater responsibility to my community. As a Jamaican, I have a greater responsibility specifically to my Jamaican community. I'm imagining as a white man, he should have a greater responsibility..and in the LGBTQ plus community. We each have a greater responsibility…And so it's answering that call to service, you know, stepping up and doing one's duty for that greater responsibility is how I've ended up here. And if nothing else, that's what I hope that people get from this conversation today. And if nothing else, I hope that's something I can pass on to my children.”

DEEP DIVE - On this episode we discuss arguably the most famous musician to have ever lived; a man who not only pioneered a music but a movement and while preaching a message of peace through his songs, was repeatedly violently attacked and tragically died before his time; Bob Marley. From a meagre start in the streets of Trenchtown, Jamaica to the dizzy heights of international super stardom, Bob Marley wanted to do more than just sing songs and make money. His mission was to heal through music, to heal what hurts the soul and to heal a broken system that was the cause of the suffering of so many. In this endeavour he made some powerful friends and equally powerful enemies and attempts on his life caused him to have to leave Jamaica. Bob Marley's music and meaning still endure today, as moving and poignant as it ever was. His death, however tragic and untimely, has also been alleged to have been a further plot to silence his powerful voice. ________________________Joining me on this episode are Edwin Sammon and Emmet Quinn. She would find it as a singer in a rocksteady group. That would lead her to discover her twin flame: a shy young man who also saw music as his ticket out of Trenchtown. Things moved fast in the music business of 1973. Less than six months after the Wailers released their first international album, Catch A Fire, the Wailers were now moving through the gears with an increasing sense of mission. 'Burnin' is an album full of revolutionary fire and fervour, it was also the last, heroic distillation of a line-up that had taken the teenaged Wailer, Tosh and Marley on a journey from the streets of Trenchtown to the brink of global stardom. Henceforth it would be Marley who was very much the man in charge. Listen back to our London event where we were joined by Don Lett’s who was largely responsible for merging punk rock and reggae in London in the late seventies, as he said himself: “The only white people you would see at a Jah Shaka dance in Dalston would be The Sex Pistols, The Clash… my friends.”

Texterna ger blodsmak i munnen.

Mighty Diamonds are a Jamaican harmony trio, recording roots reggae with a strong Rastafarian influence. was formed in 1969 and remains together as of 2012. They are best known for their 1976 debut album Right Time produced by Joseph Hoo Kim and the 1979 release Deeper Roots.Formed in 1969 in the Trenchtown area of Kingston, the group comprises lead vocalist Donald "Tabby" Shaw, and harmony vocalists Fitzroy "Bunny" Simpson and Lloyd "Judge" Ferguson.[1][2] They had become friends at school in the mid-1960s, and were originally called The Limelight, adopting 'The Mighty Diamonds' after Shaw's mother started referring to them as "the diamonds".[3][4] Their smooth harmonies and choreographed stage show were inspired by Motown vocal groups of the 1960s, with Shaw listing The Temptations, The Stylistics, The Impressions, and The Delfonics as influences as well as Jamaican rocksteady artists such as John Holt and Ken Boothe.[2][3][4] Their early recordings were produced by Pat Francis, Stranger Cole ("Girl You Are Too Young" (1970), "Oh No Baby"), Derrick Harriott ("Mash Up"), Bunny Lee ("Jah Jah Bless the Dreadlocks", "Carefree Girl"), Lee "Scratch" Perry ("Talk About It"), and Rupie Edwards, but it was in 1973 that they had their first hit single with the Francis-produced "Shame and Pride", recorded at the Dynamic Sounds studio.[2][4][5] It was their mid-1970s work with producer Joseph Hoo Kim that gave them their real breakthrough.[1] "Country Living" and "Hey Girl", were recorded and released by the Channel One label. "Right Time" followed, on Hoo Kim's Well Charge label, and cemented their status as one of the top Jamaican groups of the time www.crsradio.com 661-467-2407 caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com

King Lorenzo was born in St Ann, his talent for singing was recognized from a tender age as he performed in school, sound systems and hotels all over Jamaica under the name Parson Man. Gifted with a pure and exceptional voice, he caught the attention of reggae fans worldwide. After winning one of Jamaica's biggest singing competition, Red Label Reggae Cable, he started recording for Barry O'Hare on the X-Rated label since then Lorenzo has recorded for different labels such as Stone Love, Big Ship, Jet Star, Irie Ites, Reality Sound to name a few. After releasing several singles and also featured on many compilation CDs and other projects over the years, his first solo album Movin'Ahead was released in December 2009. This long-awaited album has been a treat for fans everywhere and received excellent reviews. His second album, STRONGER has just been released and is getting great feedback. King Lorenzo has performed on most of the major festivals all over the world and is renown for his charisma and energetic stage performances.“Music is universal and powerful. With so much negativity around the world my music is my contribution towards making our world a better place.”   Norris Man Born and raised in the notorious Trenchtown and Arnett Gardens area of Kingston, Jamaica, Christopher Campbell, now known as Norris Man had Bob Marley as a hometown hero to inspire his immersion into the musical arena. As a young boy Norris Man (named because of his enthusiasm for karate king Chuck Norris) would sit under a tree to write his own songs of redemption. Feeling music within him, Norris could not ignore his gift of singing and performing. In the Kingston dancehalls of his youth, older sound boys would hoist ten year-old Norris on top a Guiness box and hand him the mic to stir up the dance. Such experiences lit the musical fire for this ghetto youth. From there his musical journey began.
