As of this recording, the A's are currently in first place. And the A's are currently still playing in Oakland. Which feels like a bigger miracle. Friend of the pod and friend of Outsports Randy Boose is back to talk about what it's like when a good team's terrible ownership decides it's time to flirt with Vegas in order to extort a new stadium out of their current home. Oakland has seen this movie before and it doesn't end well. On the positive side, the A's are doing well on the field--their dilapidated, occasionally sewage filled field. Despite this, Matt Olson and Ramón Laureano are giving it their all to try and get Oakland back to the postseason. And nothing bad ever happens after that, right? Don't answer that. Finally, we pay tribute to Outsports expatriate editor Dawn Ennis at the end of the episode. She's the best and we miss her enormously. #66 Are You Getting What You Want?

Lil' Drummer Girl

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 16, 2020 15:49

Greetings My Drumsters, I hope everyone is healthy and staying safe during these unknown and chaotic times. Today's episode is a quick but important one.  It's about getting yourself one step closer to reaching your goals. Do you ask for what you want?  Or, do you think that possibly the universe will secretly know and bring it to you?  Knowing what you want is the first step to getting it.  Sometimes we're so distracted that we forget we need to stop and listen to our internal knowings, figure out what exactly we need and then go after it. One of the best ways to getting what you want is to sit quietly where no one will distract you.  Have a  notebook and pen in hand so that you can write down the thoughts that come to mind.   If you ask yourself this question before you go to sleep each night, and, upon awakening, you may begin to see a similar thread.  Maybe they're all based upon the same thing, maybe not.  Either way, you will get more and more answers to your questions. Next, once you know what it is that you want, you will need to figure out how you are going to get it.  Now, this is when it gets a bit more complex.  So, one of the first things I like to do when I'm up against a toughie is to sit down with a large piece of paper (this is something that I learned from Brian Tracy) and list 20 ideas on how to achieve that thing!   And like he says, it's usually the 20th idea that is the best idea.  Try it out!  I hope you'll find that you can achieve the things that you want more easily once you implement this system so that you can continuously use it and achieve them.  So here's to great things coming your way.  Stay strong, keep up the good fight and most of all, stay happy and healthy! Rock On & Rock Out,   Dawn-Marie XO P.S.  If you are feeling a little bored and are looking for something to do, I have a couple of courses that I launched.  One of them is for free and the other one is deeply discounted.  You can find them at: Star Power Studio   Let's Stay in Touch: IG:  @lildrummergirl55 FB:  DawnMarieMutell

Times of global struggle remind us all to make progress together towards the Greater Good. We are reminded to protect each other at all costs and put aside our differences in order to serve the best interest of everyone . We are reminded to stop working hard to hoard our own resources and to instead do what is best for the community. We are reminded to stop jumping up and getting distracted, lean back, and focus only on the "essentials". We are reminded to Relax. Isolate ourselves. Find our True Nature while embracing our laziness. We remember Who we are, unfiltered by the distractions of "titles" we give ourselves. But we mustn't forget this. We mustn't forget how connected we are to each other and to the world around us. This virus outbreak sends us back to our roots, back to Nature, back to "going with the flow" in the sea of Life. Rather than "driving hard" to satisfy the self-serving Ego, we are "staying at home" to play our part in creating the best outcome for all of humanity. Home is not a place, but a feeling. Do you feel it? That concern for other human beings. Friends, fmaily, people you don't even know. That feeling of being a part of something grander than your own little worries inside your head. That feeling of hope that you're playing your part by lazily lying on the couch. That's home. And you belong here. We all belong Home. We must remember that we are all in this together. That working hard for the Ego or "the man" (and his own Ego) sets us apart from one another. We can create a Song together in harmony. Each of us has One Note to play. Play your note, no more no less. Don't stress yourself out in trying to be the best. Do only what you need to do to contribute to the good of the universe, even if that's staying on the couch all day :) And since you're gonna be staying home all day, go ahead and read the full blog here. It'll help you really Embrace your Lazy Nature and become One. Read the Full Blog: https://www.procrastin8r.com/blog/backtonature Subscribe to the Newsletter: https://www.procrastin8r.com/subscribe

#60 Are You Craving Sugar?

Life's Necessities & Luxuries Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 9, 2020 11:43

We are what we eat, that's what they say right?  But, do you believe it?  One of the things I found that helped keep me calm and in a better mood is to get moving more and eat better.  We need to find ways to keep our stressors down and to find alternate ways of reducing stress or ways to balance our body, mind, and spirit which I believe is key to us living happier lives.  Today's episode is about a couple of quick ways to help preserve them.    Do you crave sugar?  Who doesn't love sugar?  It's one of those things we couldn't get enough of a kid - do you agree?  Candy, candy, and more candy (that was our motto).  We couldn't get enough of it, and, our poor parents had to deal with us on a sugar high bouncing off the walls for hours on end after we consumed our candy bar delights. As time goes by, we learn how bad sugar is for us.  For a number of years now I've been trying to quit sugar.  I haven't been able to quit it altogether, but I'm trying to become more diligent about the amount of it I consume.  Although, I must confess, last night I was pretty bad.  My beau and I consumed way too many Haagen Daz ice cream bars.  They were on sale and we thought, "Why not?"  We deserve a treat yes?  But, then, we did it, we ate them and they were, of course, delicious but then my guilt took over.  I thought to myself "why did I just let myself do this?", "I've been so good, and now I just ruined it all"  has this ever happened to you? We beat ourselves up when we don't do the right thing.  But, one of the things I've learned is that we shouldn't make ourselves unhappy or upset when we make a mistake.  It's OK to make them just as long as we can course-correct, which is what I'm doing today. This book by JJ Virgin has helped me in the sugar craving section.  I hope you'll pick up a copy if you have issues battling sugar as I do.  She's pretty freakin' amazing. JJ Virgin's Sugar Impact Diet: Drop 7 Hidden Sugars, Lose Up to 10 Pounds in Just 2 Weeks and you may also like: I Quit Sugar: Your Complete 8-Week Detox Program and Cookbook by Sarah Wilson.   Here's to much health and happiness (and less sugar in our day) as we go about our days battling the sugar impact. I met Lawrence "Lipbone" Redding the night he played at my friend Kathy’s backyard concert.  I hadn’t heard of him before and promised her I’d be there to catch the show.  Well, I sure was glad that I did because, although I only had an hour to catch a portion of his show, I was enthralled by his playing and what he can do vocally with his mouth, I mean the sounds he can make are unbelievable, and, all real, no trickery here.  He can sound like a train, a plane or any instrument you can think of.  Not only was I was floored with his musical talents, his story telling was truly captivating.  He makes you feel as though you’re living it right there and then.  And, let’s not forget about the humor in his show, he’ll keep you in stitches. I knew I had to get him on the show.  I happened to post a short video of his performance on my IG account and said something to the effect “I’d love to get this guy on the LDG show” and he replied with a comment stating that “he’d love to be on the show”, well I couldn’t begin to tell you how thrilled I was.  So I’m excited to say, he’s here with us today. A bit about Lawrence “Lipbone” Redding: He's an award-winning vocalist, guitar player, voice instrumentalist, storyteller, songwriter, author, teacher and traveler.  He is best known for his one-man orchestra show; simultaneously playing, singing and making the instrument sounds with his mouth and without the use of a loop pedal.   Lipbone incorporates a full spectrum of musical styles from American Roots and Jazz to throat singing and Indian Classical.     In his interview today, we talk about: The importance of doing the “work” yourself, not waiting on others to do what they said they promised to do.  What performing in the NYC subway tunnels for 6 years taught him about the industry as well as how it honed his skills as a performer. How he travels around the nation in his "beautiful flying machine" (what he’s coined his van). I recently was at my 3rd annual Reggae Rise Up Festival in downtown St. Petersburg when I had the chance to see the band HIRIE live in person (finally), I’ve been trying to catch them since I learned of them about 3 years ago.    Today we have a special guest, Kurtis Parsons, A/K/A “Conga Kurty” is in the house.   In his interview we talk about: How to survive on the road when you have severe food allergies and how they not only affect the body, but, the mind as well and what’s needed to stay fit while on tour. How his 6th grade teacher wouldn’t let him play percussion and wanted him to play the sax!  (Bad move teacher).  How you never know what life has in store for you and how to listen to signs. How he opened up his own organic juice bar in Mexico. How fate stepped into his path, how he met up with HIRIE when they were in town in Mexico and how they’ve been playing with them ever since. How he lives to surf and so much more.   So come on and take a listen.  Grab your ear buds, pour yourself a tall glass of your favorite drink and let’s get going...   Stay in touch with Conga Kurty IG: @congakurty Facebook:  HirieMusic   Be sure to follow them wherever music is streamed. This episode is in english based around Leadership and Motivation as topics  - and how Christian works with these subjects in his work life.  Christian Obermoser works as a Leadership Coach and supports people in realizing their potential and developing this potential into actual skills. He is also a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Vienna, Austria where he teaches leadership theory & leadership skills. "I am not a fitness trainer where I develop the body, and I am not a mental trainer where I develop mental skills, it's all of it - what I work with I see as a whole". In this episode I talk to Christian Obermoser about: How he grew up in the country side and how it affected his life and values and felt the trust of the adults around him. Leadership development and how bullying in the workplace is based on unconscious patterns of behaviour and what we can do about it. How authenticity is ablotutely  KEY to him and we talk about how it's possible not to be authentic. Christian shares his insights about hos he thinks the concept of Motivation needs to change, which I think is really interesting. How he thinks leaders are quite bad actors. This  - I think is very funny. Christian shares how he doesn't think it's possible to make a wrong decision, and how this can lift the burden of 'taking the right decision' from people. We talk about the concept of soul and how Christian does not believe in it, but still he thinks there is a 'third element' to life and being human, that is very hard not to talk about when one is working with leadership and development of people. Today I have very fun, cool and special guest – Zeb a/k/a Jamey Dakofsky who is the drummer for Tribal Seeds.   Zeb is from L.A. and has been playing drums since he was 8 years and old and by age 10 he was gigging in a punk and classic rock. All the while playing with various musical ensembles, working on Timpani, hand percussion and full drum set.   He attended the performing arts high school in California and by age 20 he was backing his first Reggae artist Mikey Dread H.R. from Bad Brains hand drumming specialist Ras Michael when came back to the states, his career skyrocketed.   He has worked sessions with Grammy award winning songwriters such as Diane Warren (Aerosmith and Leann Rimes) and worked with top producers such as Ashley Ingram (Des'ree), Randy Jackson and Fabian Cooke (“Lion King” Soundtrack).   In 1994, he helped form Detour Posse which has since become the premiere backing band of International Reggae artists from around the globe. Working over 250 shows a year, sometimes he even plays more than one bill on the show (like he did it the night I saw him live with Tribal Seeds, he also played with Fortunate Youth).   In 2011 Zeb performed with Grammy winning artist Shaggy on the Lopez Tonight and again in 2012 on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.   I had the chance to see Zeb live first hand several weeks ago. They were playing with Fortunate Youth, and Pepper. The Jannus was packed to the gills and it was one of those hot, hot, humid evenings, and you'd never know it as they rocked the audience all night long.   Zeb was gracious enough to grant me an interview. I was so excite to meet him, because I've been listing to Tribal Seeds for about the past three years now and was really digging their sound. So, to get to watch Zeb play the skins was a real treat. His speed, chops, stamina and agility rocked the house.   Zeb's currently is endorsed by Super Natural Cymbals and Kick Port International. His set up is Pearl Prestige Session Drum Set Select Kit  and Pearl Hardware, Roland SPD-SX, Toca Special Edition Congas, LP Bongos and hand percussion and Pro-Mark 5B Oak Sticks.   Zeb's interview will be already in progress as it was the evening of the show and there may be some background noises as we were in the Green room. So, give it a listen and enjoy!   Stay in touch with Zeb at: ZEB'S INSTAGRAM ZEB ON FACEBOOK   Learn more about Tribal Seeds and follow them at:   TRIBAL SEEDS ON FACEBOOK   Check out  Tribal Seeds music or follow them on Tribal on YouTube       Remember, if you like this episode, it would mean the world to me if you shared the love mon!     Rock On & Rock Out!   Dawn-Marie (D.M). Today is National Leg Wear Day and it made me wonder how many of you ladies out there take advantage of this soon to be forgotten fashion accessory? Which type do you like to wear? Are you the traditional type wearing only solid black, navy or nude? Or, are you more adventurous type wearing wild patterns, checks, prints and vibrant colors? As a professional image consultant I've learned that leg wear can make or break an outfit. Also, it is imperative to wear them if the occasion calls for it. If you notice, more and more women are steering clear of wearing them. I still consult my clients and tell them the importance of wearing a pair, especially if it's for an important meeting or if you're say, speaking on stage. When I teach my “What's My Style” fashion class, I help women and men learn what their fashion styles are – there are 7. If you're interested in learning what yours is, stop by my website at: http://dawnmariemutell.com and sign up at the bottom right hand of the page and I'll be sure to let you know of the next time I offer the webinar. Fall has arrived and now's the time to take advantage of the season by adding some cool and fun leggings as well as tights, pantyhose and other fun legwear by incorporating them into your daily fashion routines. Have you ever thought about wearing a pair of fishnets to the office? Some folks may think that's a little bit much, but, you most certainly can wear them as long as they're the right webbing. For instance, the larger the weave, the less “sexy” they look. I found several pair years ago that I love to wear to work, they're beige, white and purple. I've worn them to office meetings, network events and speaking engagements. They actually look fun, exciting and personable. Here are a couple you can try: Fishnet Stockings  If you like more of the creative styles, you may like to add some of these fun and whimsical ones: Fun & Whimsical Tights Not only do these tights make your legs look more fashionable, up-to-date and pulled together; you'll also be able to camouflage some of those not-so-lovely things that you may not like about them such as spider and varicose veins, scars or stretch marks AND the best part is that you may even be able to skip a couple of leg shavings (no one will know but you and possibly your significant other).   I remember when I had my ankle tendon repair surgery. It was back in 2004 and I had this terrible looking scar that ran from one end of my ankle to another (I fell in a sink hole outside my home in Brooklyn) and wearing tights and dark color pantyhose make me feel so much better about the appearance of my legs. It covered up the scar until it was lightened where I could go back to wearing au-naturel They were my saving grace. They not only kept the scar from being seen, it also kept me from constantly looking at it as a reminder of the fall. If you've never been one to wear tights, you might want to begin slowly. I'd say introduce a pair that might have a tiny tight weave or small light pattern. Nothing too flashy or revealing. But, if you're looking to go from “drab and dreary to a vixen” then try on some thigh highs. Here are a couple of my favorites:  Thigh Highs You can't help but immediately feel sexier once you slide on your first pair and, another bonus, your partner will be drooling all over you once they find out what you're wearing. If you want to push the envelope, add a garter belt to match. Here are a couple of combination hosiery: Garter Belts with Stockings  The last thing I want to share with you is that the legging or even   Jeggings (jeans/legging combo) is one of the quickest ways to enhance your casual work pieces which you can add to your wardrobe that will not only flatter just about every leg length out there, but, they're quite easy to wear, comfortable as hell and you can wear them year-round. Some of my favorites are Lulumon just add your favorite pair of ballet flats wear a long tunic or man-tailored blouse, tie a sweater over your neck add a couple of necklaces, a chunky cuff bracelet, cool funky earrings and viola instant chic. You're on way to looking beautiful whether you're going to the office, Sunday brunch or shopping with your BFF's. Well that's all for today lovelies. I hope you enjoyed this episode. If you did, please share the love and pass it on to someone you know who will also enjoy it. Don't forget to sign up at http://dawnmariemutell.com for the next webinar of the “What's My Style” webinar. Remember to live peacefully, happily, lovingly and successfully.   Until the next time, Namaste!   Dawn-Marie XO   Let's Stay in Touch: Sign Up For Our Newsletter Facebook Instagram

Lil' Drummer Girl

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 15, 2017 8:06

Greetings Gentlemen, this episode today is specifically for you (well some of it can also apply to women), but I'm dedicating this one for you guys out there.   Today is National Men's Grooming Day! My question for you is this:  Do you take good care of your skin?  I'm not just referring to the skin on your face, but the skin on your body, feet, and hands as well?  What about your scalp? Your ears?? If you're saying, "not really", well then listen on.  Today I'm going to cover how we can keep all of the above in great shape and in the process you may actually look years younger.  So listen on.   I've been a makeup artist since I was in my teens and I've been studying skincare since then as well.   I've also studied under the best skin technicians and skincare companies like Estee Lauder's Clinique Brand, MAC and Bobbi Brown.   There's so many ways we can easily take good care of the largest organ in our bodies -- our skin.  First is to know what your skin type is.  There are 5 main skin types:  Normal, Dry, Oily, Combination and Sensitive Skin. With Normal Skin it's just that, no dryness, no shine, no breakouts, etc. Dry skin is when you have flakiness, tightness after you wash your face. Oily skin is when there's too much oil production and you are constantly looking very shiny.  You may even have oily hair.  Combination skin is when your T-Zone (your forehead, nose and chin) may be oily and your cheeks are dry or normal.  Then there's sensitive skin where you find that any harsh chemicals or fragrance can make you break out.   Once you know which skin type you have you can find the ideal products to keep your skin looking it's best.   There are many products and things we can eat every day that can wreak havoc on our skin.  For instance, eating too much sugar, or drinking too many sugary beverages or drinks can irritate our skin by causing breakouts and also will give you wrinkles that much more quickly.  Smoking is another no, no.  It will cause premature aging of your skin.  So, if you're a smoker, think about the benefits of quitting today: Not only will you have less wrinkles in your skin, you'll breathe easier, give your heart a beating chance and not smell like a dirty ashtray AND you won't hurt your loved ones any longer by not giving them second hand smoke (I'm only saying this cause I used to be a smoker myself and I couldn't be happier that I've quit and yes, I know it's one of the hardest things to do but when you do, you'll be amazed at why you never did it sooner). Back to cleaning your skin.  When you don't cleanse your skin with the proper cleansers or you're not using a daily moisturizer it will hinder your skin's collagen production (and we need collagen to keep it's elasticity and to keep wrinkles at bay).  Even if you have oily skin you should use a moisturizer.  Clinique has their yellow famous moisturizer called Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizer and there's one for oily skin called the "gel" formulation.   Our skin needs moisturizer so drinking at least 8 tall glasses of water a day will help keep your skin plumped and look less dried out like a raisin.  Instead your skin will look like a peach, firm, fuzzy and beautiful.     When you wash your face, do you just use plain old soap and water?  If so, please stop immediately.  You're drying out your skin.  Try a mild cleanser, moisturizer and a weekly masque. Here are a couple that I really love for men's skin: Clinique's Men's Face Wash Clinique Repairwear Face Masque   Now I know one of the main differences in skin care between men and women is that you have the daily shaving routine.  Or, if you're sporting a beard, there's maintenance there as well.     A few products that I found that men really seem to love are: Bossman Beard Kit Lucky Tiger Moustache Wax Jimmy Beard Oil Beard Clippers & Shears   Now onto hands and feet.  Do you take care of your digits?  Do you work with your hands?  Do you feel getting manicures is too feminine, for girls only?  Well guess again.  I've seen more and more men getting manicures at the salon.  But, if you still feel uncomfortable you can do one for yourself at home.  Here are a couple of products to get you started: Sally Hansen Vitamin E & Cuticle Oil will help keep dry cuticles soft and looking less beat up. And, if you have very dry hand, try  Neutrogena Fast Absorbing Hand Cream  which will help keep your hands soft to the touch.     Let's not forget our tootsies.  We wear shoes that get wet, or, worse, we take showers in lockerrooms at the gyms that aren't always the cleanest of places, where bacteria breeds and the last thing you need is a toe fungus.  If so, this product I've used works quick and is very easy to apply.  Just be sure to dry your feet well, spray it on every day and you'll be amazed that in a few weeks you'll see a huge difference.  Footlogix Fungal Spray  or, if you have cracked heels, this product helps heal them quickly: Footlogix Cracked Heel Formula. Manscaping is the new thing.  Unlike women where we just pop into a salon at any time to get waxing done.  Some of you men out there may not feel as comfortable and one product that you can use at home that is painfree and easy to use is Nair Men's Hair Remover Cream.  Please do a patch test in small area first to be sure you don't have any skin sensitivity or reaction to it.   Don't forget about the hair that grows in the places we don't want hair to grow, for instance, your nose, ears and eyebrows will always need maintenance and care.  Be sure to check out this one tool to help with ease:  Conair Nose, Ear and Eyebrow Trimmer   If you're one who makes a living working outdoors, then you must be sure to protect your skin everyday --even when it's overcast outside, you still can get those nasty damaging rays which will wreak havoc on your skin. Not only can you get skin cancer but also will cause premature aging.  So check out the Neutrogena Sunblock for Sensitive Skin SPF 100     Now, wow, you're probably saying that's a real laundry list.  But, it's not as bad as you think.  The last thing I want you to think of is about smelling nice for your partner.  One of my favorite male scents is Kouros Body Men Spray by Yves St. Laurent   OK guys, you're on your way to looking great, smelling and feeling great.   Rock On & Rock Out, Dawn-Marie XO   Let's Stay in Touch: Instagram Facebook

Mother's Quest Podcast
Ep 18: YOLO (You Only Live Once) and other Milestone Reflections with Ryan Neale

Mother's Quest Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 30, 2017 64:29

I’m so honored and excited to bring you this Episode #18 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast with a very special guest, my own son Ryan Neale. One of the great lessons I’ve learned is the importance of marking milestones and honoring endings so that you can thoughtfully open a new chapter. As Ryan approaches his bar mitzvah in April, becoming a “Jewish adult” and entering his teens, we decided we would spend his thirteenth birthday together, going on a “milestone hike” ‘and then recording an episode of the podcast at a recording studio in San Francisco. It was a magical day of reflection, revelations for both of us, and a lot of laughter. I’m honored to bring highlights of all of that to you through this episode. You’ll hear Ryan share eloquently and honestly about his appreciation for the support that helped him conquer his developmental delays, how his own fears manifest in his life today, and how, in his next chapter, he wants to trust more and move through his fear. Because, he says, he wants to live with a YOLO (You Only Live Once) mindset. Ryan reflects on snapshot moments from his life, about his deep love for his younger brother, his experience finding a group of friends and a school program where he could thrive, receiving the academic achievement award, and the moments he hopes he’ll be able to look back on with pride at the next milestone. Ryan also gets a turn to ask me his own questions and give me feedback. I had an opportunity to share the biggest lesson my mother gave me, to always appreciate every stage of life you’re in when you’re in it, and acknowledge what I wish I could change about myself.   I also heard Ryan reflect back that in being “a little selfish” in creating Mother’s Quest I’ve given him so much more than if I only focused on my children. There’s a game we play with Erik Newton (whose studio we recorded in) as our game show host, a lot of laughter and some comical out-takes that you’ll want to stick around for at the very end. I felt so blessed to create this experience with Ryan and to share it with you. I take with me the importance of marking these rites of passage thoughtfully with our children, what a privilege it is to be witness to the development of another human being as a mother, a reminder of how powerfully our children see and know us and help us grow, and what fun it can be to create new experiences together. Ryan and I will never forget how we spent his thirteenth birthday together. We hope you’ll leave this episode inspired to mark a milestone in your life, with your children, and make some life-long memories of your own. This week we talk to Katie Dixon from the Baltimore Humane Society about what the Humane Society does, indoor vs outdoor living for cats, and a very special cat named Oliver. We also recommend a great cat themed book and, of course, end with a meow of the week. Thank you Crossworlds for the use of the song “Cat’s Lullaby” . A very special thanks to Katie Dixon and the Baltimore Humane Society, to learn more about the Bmore Humane, please visit their website at bmorehumane.org or visit meowcastpodcast.com for links. The book we recommended this week can be found on Amazon. Our Meow of the Week was 22 Cats That are Prettier Than Any Human Could Ever Be by Natalya Lobanva, Buzzfeed. If you have a great cat story, please comment for send us an email at meowcastpodcast@gmail.com

Over more than a week after the death of 25 year old Freddie Gray, Baltimore still has no answers on how and why this young man died in police custody. From the mayors misspoken words, to riots and looting, the attention has shifted from the death of Gray to issues that continue to overlook the truth of what happened. #BaltimoreUprising
