As the world famous Notting Hill Carnival isn't taking place this year, we thought we'd have a party of our own, Caribbean style. Ragga artist and MC General Levy leads the charge. His parents were Trinidadian, and from an early age he started to write lyrics and form sound systems. If you don't recognise the name, then you'll definitely know the voice; Incredible, his '94 track with M-Beat, changed the changed the sound of jungle and drum & bass forever. Joining him is carnival royalty, the selector Lady Banton. She set up the first all-female soundsystem in the UK, the Mellotone Sound System, in 1989, and became a Carnival favourite soon after. Mikey Dread is a founding member and chief selector of one of the UK's best known and most loved sound systems, the Channel One Soundsystem, who have played at the Carnival every year since 1983. Named after the famous studio in Kingston, Jamaica, they bring the reggae, the dubplates, and the “hot steppas”. And finally, breathing new life into the festival is Alicai Harley. Born in Jamaica, she caused a stir releasing a string of singles and EPs, before working with the likes of Stefflon Don, Kamille, Stonebwoy, Aluna, and Kojo Funds. She released her debut album The Red Room Intro earlier this year and is the self-proclaimed “yard gyal inna Britain”. Together the group discuss all things Carnival: the cost of those costumes, when and how they got started, why you need the rain to cool you down, you parents not letting you go, and the importance of talent over hype.

The late, great MIKEY DREAD joined me in the studio in 1992 to discuss a range of topic and "guest DJ" with some of his favorite songs. In this segment, Mikey talks about a chance meeting with former members of Rock band Guns 'N Roses that lead to him collaborating and performing on two songs. The rest of the interview and some legendary Mikey Dread tunes can be heard by clicking here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6OAQl0uVUITDK5nBmBkyL0?si=z2aPfI2YSHSrKtTawJx_oQ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/reggaerootsrockers/message

During my time as a DJ at WERS radio in Boston, we were joined by many Reggae performers, but few brought the energy and vibe of the legendary MIKEY DREAD. Sadly, Mikey departed this world in 2008, but his voice and music live on to entertain and inspire future generations. This interview was recorded live in-studio in 1992. A version of this Podcast featuring Mikey Dread musical selections is available to Spotify Premium subscribers by clicking here: https://open.spotify.com/show/4aEBFx02xIGefbyxuI3rKm (those without a Spotify Premium subscription are welcome to listen, but will hear only :30-second snippets of music.) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/reggaerootsrockers/message

The Clash were famously once deemed “the only band that matters” and through about 3/4 of their discography it’s pretty easy to make that case. But what about the remaining 1/3? We go album by album to re-evaluate the great, the slightly less than great and the triple album filler to determine if the only band that matters still matters some 40 years after their debut. DJ Tomas – Umoja Hi-Fi Sound Station "I’m A Rootsman, Part 1: Deep Roots Mix" A 73 minute selection of deeper roots reggae music from the 1970s and ‘80s. This selection focuses on slower, dubbier tracks with conscious themes and lyrics. I was trying to invoke the spirit of reggae radio in the ‘80s – be it pirate radio in the UK, college radio in the US or Dread at the Controls broadcasts in Jamaica. Another inspiration was DJ Andrew’s foundation/roots underground parties in Los Angeles in the mid-90s. A UK native and carpenter, Andrew would hold late night affairs in small after-hours bars on Fairfax Ave, focusing on strictly roots and culture selections. Honest Jons’ Dave Phelps would bring his 45s and Daz and Cokni would rope in. I & I hope you enjoy this set. More soon. Giving I-ses unto Jah I-tinually. Word sound is power. Why is Sugar Minott considered a dancehall pioneer? Listen to Reggae Lover Podcast 86 to find out. In a live dancehall setting during the 1970s, it was common for artists to perform over pre-recorded instrumentals. Sugar Minott was the first artist to recreate that style inside the studio. He worked with Coxsone Dodd and sang new lyrics over the instrumentals of popular Studio One songs. After leaving Studio One, Minott founded his own record label called the Black Roots. He also founded a sound system called Youth Man Promotions, and later a record label by the same name. His vision was to give young artists an outlet, and a chance to make their name in the music business. Sugar Minott moved to England where he was achieving more success than he was in Jamaica. The lover's rock craze started in the UK and Sugar was one of the major players in that movement. While in England he discovered the group Musical Youth. Back in Jamaica, he's also credited with discovering many young talents. He gave unknown artists the chance to perform live in the Dancehall and record for the first time. It was Sugar Minott who actually recorded Garnet Silk's first song. Other artists associated with the Black Roots and Youthman Promotion movements include Barrington Levy, Little John, Nitty Gritty, Tenor Saw, Junior Reid, Jah Stitch, Ranking Dread and Ranking Joe. Sugar was a very Dynamic, versatile artist with successful records in different styles. Lovers rock, Roots, covers, dancehall style, and original written material. Sugar Minott recorded for his own record labels, and he worked with other top labels and producers. Working with Mikey Dread, George Phang, Sly and Robbie Jammys, Channel One and with the Bullwackies label out of New York City. Sugar Minott recorded over 60 albums and countless singles. He passed away in 2010 to heart disease. To see him on stage I was very impressed. Even in his old age, he was a very energetic performer, acting out scenes, jumping, prancing and dancing across the stage. All with his voice still sounding sweet like sugar. Very comfortable in a dancehall setting, he would ask the band or the selector to play some Studio One, and he could sing for hours - entertaining and thrilling the crowd. I salute the great Sugar Minott. His legacy lives on with his daughter Pashon Minott who is a bonafide recording artist in her own rights. If you enjoy this mix I hope you will add some of the songs to your music collection.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reggae-lover/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
