In 1991, Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited made their second tour of the United States. It was a fascinating transitional moment in the band's history. Mapfumo had recently added two musicians playing the metal-pronged, Shona mbira, enriching the band's lineup of guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, brass and percussion. The band had now evolved into a kind of folk orchestra in which everyone sang, allowing for beautifully layered vocal arrangements. This recording, made by Afropop Worldwide at S.O.B.'s in New York City during that historic tour, is a true gem in the Afropop archive. It captures one of Africa's most innovative and unusual artists and bandleaders at the height of his powers. One listen to this sublime recording and you will understand why producer Banning Eyre devoted some 15 years to writing the book Lion Songs: Thomas Mapfumo and the Music That Made Zimbabwe.

Here are three stories from James A Honey's African Folktales book. In story one, the animals dance until the water comes, but Rabbit doesn't want get his paws dirty. After the animals get water, rabbit swims in the water and makes it all muddy. The animals decide that he should pay for his attitude and rudeness. But who will catch him and who will make him pay? In the second story, Jackal is caught in a trap while trying to sneak off with some young meat. Monkey thinks this is hilarious, but Jackal convinces him that it is all just a game and that Monkey should come and try. Will he fall for it? In story three, Lion and Jackal are again hunting together. It goes about as well as it did last time, and Lion ends up getting more than his fair share. **Tracklist:** Stanley Cowell / Travellin‘ Man Kirk Lightsey, Rudolph Johnson / Fresh air Arthur Verocai / Presente grego Mirot / Love for sale Mulatu Astatke / Munaye Rob / Just One More Time Magnum / Evolution Joe Farrell / Another Star Monk Higgins / Get down Sheba Guts, Pat Kalla / Daddy Sweet Banda Black Rio / Miss Cheryl Ramsey Lewis / Kufanya Mapezi Keni Okulolo / Funky People Buddy Rich Big Band / Three day sucker Thomas Mapfumo / Butsu mutandarika Hallelujah Chicken Run Band / Chaminuka Mukuru

We just wrapped up our third season of our podcast series Afropop Closeups, and it may have been the best season yet. Afropop producers traveled from watching reggae artists in chilly Berlin to Thomas Mapfumo’s triumphant return concert in Harare, Zimbabwe. They witnessed how digital technology is changing carnival in Haiti and how--for centuries--the cutting edge in long-distance communication was Asante drumming in what is now Ghana. For this week’s program, we picked three shows from season 3 that will give you a taste of what an Afropop Closeup is all about. From an interview with the pioneering Caribbean feminist Calypso Rose, to the homegrown music scene African immigrants are creating outside Lisbon, to the story of a mysterious kidnapping of a musical legend--pull back the curtain and see the stories behind the music and see them close up. Produced by Dan Rosenberg, Morgan Greenstreet and Sebastian Bouknight.

He moved his family into exile in Oregon to escape the turmoil, scarcity and harassment they faced in the late years of President Robert Mugabe’s regime. But in April , 2018, with Mugabe out of power since November, Mapfumo returned to Harare to perform an all-night stadium concert for an estimated 20,000 people. In recognition of the end of Robert Mugabe's 37-year rule in Zimbabwe, we are rebroadcasting our program on the career of Thomas Mapfumo during the Mugabe years. Part two of the story of Zimbabwe’s most consequential singer and bandleader picks up at the dawn of the country’s independence in 1980. The program focuses on key songs from Thomas Mapfumo’s vast post-independence catalogue, beginning with his celebration of victory, and his warnings about “dissidents” out to destabilize a young nation struggling for unity. The 1988 song “Corruption” officially opens Mapfumo’s rift with the regime of Robert Mugabe, turning a government financial scandal into a pop culture sensation. 1999’s “Mamvemve” accuses leaders of betraying the promises of the liberation struggle and reducing a rich country to tatters, and 2003’s “Marima Nzara” takes on the government over Zimbabwe’s most prolonged and vexing challenge—reclaiming land stolen from Africans by Rhodesian settlers over a century of colonial rule. In all, this is an amazing saga of a popular singer’s evolution from enthusiastic booster to caustic critic of a young African government. Zimbabwean historian Mhoze Chikowero contextualizes all these songs with vivid descriptions of the issues and events that Mapfumo’s work both responded to and shaped. At the time this program was recorded, Afropop producer Banning Eyre had been researching a biography of Mapfumo for more than 15 years, and the broadcast draws upon his, and Afropop’s, wealth of archival interviews and rare musical recordings, resulting in a persuasive portrait of a brilliant musical innovator and an under-recognized titan of African post-colonial cultural politics.

[APWW PGM #55] [Originally aired in 1992] In 1991, Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited made their second tour of the United States. It was a fascinating transitional moment in the band’s history. Mapfumo had recently added two musicians playing the metal-pronged, Shona mbira, enriching the band’s lineup of guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, brass and percussion. The band had now evolved into a kind of folk orchestra in which everyone sang, allowing for beautifully layered vocal arrangements. This recording, made by Afropop Worldwide at S.O.B.'s in New York City during that historic tour, is a true gem in the Afropop archive. It captures one of Africa’s most innovative and unusual artists and bandleaders at the height of his powers. Alright summer is here!  That means lots of time outside, in the pool, and by the grill which obviously necessitates all kinds of new music.  Today I have for you a sampling of different directions to go when you start thinking about what kind of summer music mix you are looking to go for.  This is really one of my favorite types of podcasts.  I've got the newest sounds I'm jamming combined with classics from my past.  I actually had to order two physical compact discs because I couldn't find the albums digitally!!  For me, last summer was all about the amazing albums from Quantic and Jungle mixed in with some afro funk and high life.  Something tells me I am going to be doing some recycling of those but there are many solid additions to get into.As I write this I am remembering that I completely forgot to put a track from Clean Bandit on the mix.  My bad!!  Here's the track I was gonna use. "Come Over"  Without it, the mix is missing that taste of dancehall, which is a summer must.  They were amazing at Coachella.  Watching them from the shade of the palm trees while they owned the mid day main stage is the definition of an ideal Coachella moment.  I'll make it up to them on a podcast soon but you should check out their album New Eyes.  Classically trained band playing their version of house music.  So good. Links referenced in the podcast:Awesome unofficial Kaytranada videoThomas Mapfumo on Afropop Worldwide #1Thomas Mapfumo on Afropop Worldwide #2As a side note, I really try to keep all comments on the podcast positive but I must share my complete disdain for Adobe Audition's recording.  I switched over from Audacity around podcast 30 or so because the sound processing tools were a little better.  While I may still use it for post processing, never again will I trust it for recording the voice over.  This is the second time that upon closing, Audition not only deleted all the temp files but also the sound files I had saved, multiple times.  Searching around on the internet, I found I am not the only person to run into this serious issue.  And even worse, this is the second time it's happened to me.  Shame on me.  Luckily, this time I had already exported a draft so I didn't have to rerecord the whole podcast but it means I didn't get to go back and balance all the levels just right, fix some plosives, etc...  Anyway, if I hadn't said anything you probably wouldn't have noticed but I don't want any of y'all to run into this same problem.  Use something else for recording.  Now let's pump the positivity and get the jams goin!!Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,Aaronaaron@activelistenerpodcast.com Tracklist (these are links to buy the songs)1.Mabasa (Work) by Thomas Mapfumo on Mabasa2.Dancing On Quicksand by Bad Suns on Language & Perspective3.The Boys of Summer by The Ataris on So Long, Astoria4.Too Drunk to F*** by Nouvelle Vague on Nouvelle Vague5.Let It Carry You by José González on Vestiges & Claws6.Far Nearer by Jamie xx on Far Nearer / Beat For - EP7.Helios ft. The tour stops in Oakland, CA, at the Paramount Theatre, then on to LA. Tuku began recording in the mid-1970s as a member of Wagon Wheels. After WW rolled to fame in Southern Africa, Tuku formed the Black Spirits, the band which backs him to this day. Tuku's music is heavily influenced by chimurenga music, which in Shona means music of "struggle," the genre pioneered by Thomas Mapfumo and inspired by the mbira (thumb piano). A fantastic writer and creative artist, Tuku reflects in his music the lives and histories of his people, a people who love freedom and justice and are tireless in their quest to achieve such.
