The Yukon River sits about 4,400 km (about 2,735 miles) from my door, so it's a little far, but this is our first trip to the Yukon, and I couldn't have been more excited by it. This absolutely bug-nuts story came courtesy of listener, Jonny Wilkie, a resident, and he inspired me to want to incorporate more minisodes from story suggestions you've all supplied that didn't have enough beef on them to inflate into a full episode, but are just too damn good not to want to share. Also, this came out about 30% shorter than a regular episode, so they're not-so-minisodes. No matter.I was going to add a cooking segment to today's story, but opted for the quick and benign details of an open-air BBQ that flambés metric tons of food a lot quicker and grosser than you'd think. One fine day in October of 1891, a teenage boy named Aquilla Ernest Clark left the farm in Scappoose where he'd been working, headed for Portland. He was going to see the sights and maybe show himself a good time for a few days. He wandered around the waterfront, taking drinks here and there and probably taking a hand in a card game or two; then, when it was getting close to evening, he met a pleasant fellow who happened to mention that he was staying at the sailors' boardinghouse at Second and Glisan streets. “It's the best place to stay in Portland,” he said. That sounded good; Aquilla needed a place to stay for the night. So he went with his new friend to the boardinghouse. “The place was rather dimly lighted,” Aquilla told author Stewart Holbrook, years later, in a 1933 interview for the Portland Sunday Oregonian. “A Scandinavian was playing an accordion in the big main room on the ground floor; several old-time seamen, or at least I took them to be such, were sitting in chairs around the room, smoking pipes that reeked to the skies and telling how these new-fangled steamboats would never amount to much.” It was good enough for Aquilla. Send us a textInteresting things about the distillery:Said to be America's oldest continually maintained brand of whiskey, it was founded in West Overton, Pennsylvania, in 1810.Old Overholt is a rye whiskey distilled by A. Overholt & Co., currently a subsidiary of Beam Suntory, which is a subsidiary of Suntory Holdings of Osaka, Japan. It is currently distilled at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, KYHenry Oberholzer (Anglicized to “Overholt”), a German Mennonite farmer, moved to West Overton, Pennsylvania, on the banks of Jacobs Creek in Western Pennsylvania in 1800.  His family came from the area of Germany which specialized in distilling “korn”, or rye whiskey, and Henry took up the tradition.In 1810, Henry's son took over the management of the distillery and made it into a business. By the 1820s, the distillery was putting out 12 to 15 gallons of rye whiskey per day. By 1859, Overholt incorporated his business as “A. Overholt & Co.” He operated out of a new distillery building that was six stories high, 100 feet long, and which could produce 860 gallons per day.Old Overholt was one of six distilleries allowed to continue issuing bottled-in-bond, government stamped, pints with a dosage cup atop the cap and doctor's prescription attached to the back.Maybe because Andrew Mellon was a partner in the business and he was the secretary of the treasury under HardingMellon Sold his shares in 1925 due to concerns from prohabisionists Beam bought out the old overholt in 1986, when they made the purchase of Dekuyper Peachtree Schnapps. And yeah, there were times when the twain did meet in real life. Naïve farmboy Aquilla Ernest Clark was lured into the clutches of Portland shanghaier Larry Sullivan by a flock of beautiful, friendly ladies obviously hired for the purpose, who joined him and eight other victims on a chartered riverboat for what they thought was a “birthday party” cruise. And who can forget Eliza “Boneyard Mary” Bunets, the 40-year-old solo practitioner who apparently entertained her customers aboard mothballed sternwheelers in the Oregon Steam & Navigation Co.'s “boneyard” at the foot of Flanders Street? But the combination seems to have reached its peak in the case of a Portland madam named Nancy Boggs, who actually operated a bordello aboard a 40-by-80-foot barge anchored in the middle of the Willamette River, in the early 1880s.... Back in the 1800s, a fire on a riverboat was a very serious matter, and not as rare as you might think. Riverboats were made of wood and powered by steam boilers, so there was always a fire on board. If powered by coal, there was coal dust to worry about; if, in later times, by oil, the engine room was often soaked with flammable liquids. The stories of paddlewheel riverboats on American rivers are peppered with tales of fires breaking out on them and quickly surging out of control, and nearly all such anecdotes come with a body count. Oregon's most famous riverboat fire has a body count, too. It's 1. But it unquestionably would have been a lot higher than that, if not for the quick thinking and clear decisionmaking of its legendary skipper — and, probably more importantly, his instant unwillingness to gamble his passengers' lives to try and save his boat. Thanks to Bob Irving, millions have seen Chicago's skyline from the best seat in the house — the river. He created the Chicago Architecture Center's boat tours, which are now a staple of the city's tourism industry. Irving died earlier this month at the age of 93. Attraction audio recorded on June 6, 2024. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we're going to hop aboard the Liberty Belle for a cruise on the Liberty Square Riverboat. The Walt Disney World website describes this attraction saying: Cruise the scenic Rivers of America aboard an authentic steam-powered paddle wheeler.  There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and the thrill level describes the attraction as being a slow ride. Before we shove off, here are five fast facts about the Liberty Square Riverboat in Magic Kingdom. 1. The Liberty Square Riverboat attraction opened at Walt Disney World on October 2, 1971.  The first boat that served was called the Admiral Joe Fowler, named after Joe Fowler who was in charge of construction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.  In 1973, a second river boat was added named the Richard F. Irvine.  In 1986, that boat was renamed to Liberty Belle which still runs the Rivers of America today.  An interesting note is that the original boat, the Admiral Joe Fowler was damaged in a dry dock incident and was retired in 1980.   2. The Liberty Belle is a steam-powered sternwheeler replica.  Sternwheeler means there is one paddle wheel on the rear or stern of the ship.  A steam engine pulled water from the river to turn into steam to power the paddlewheel. 3.  The Liberty Belle is 47 feet tall and features four decks for guests to visit during the ride. 4. During the 17 minute trip, a narrator, in the in the voice of Mark Twain points out the sights guests see as they travel down the river including an early American settlement, a Native American village and Big Thunder Mountain. 5. The captain on the narration track is named Horace Bixby who was a real riverboat captain who mentored Samuel Clemons aka Mark Twain. Essen, sagt sie, war der Kitt in der Beziehung zwischen ihren Großeltern, ist für sie, Mareile, aber auch der Ruhe-Stifter in diesem recht rastlosen Job. Ich lerne sie durch ihre Erzählungen noch mal ganz neu kennen, wenn sie über Arme Ritter mit selbstgemachtem Apfelmus spricht, über ihren Vater, der am liebsten in Currypulver baden würde und ihre Mutter, die seit dem Schlaganfall nicht mehr kochen kann. Kim recently took her two girls to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando for a mother-daughter getaway. Hear more about her trip, learn some strategies for using Lightning Lane, new rides, new theme parks coming, and comparisons between the parks. It was hot, humid, and rainy in the afternoons, but they still had a fun time exploring all the parks. Luckily, Universal Orlando has more indoor rides that help on rainy days. Updates from Walt Disney World Tron in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom - it is like riding a motorcycle but on a roller coaster track. The ride is fabulous but really short. Splash Mountain is now Tiana's Bayou Adventure - this is a two-by-two flume-like ride that has been redesigned. Disney now has Lightning Lane Multi Experience and Lightning Lane Single Experience. With the Multi Experience, it works on multiple rides and as soon as you tap into one ride, you can request the next Lightning Lane. You want to purchase and prebook your first ride in advance. Single Experience is where you can buy a Lightning Lane time slot for individual rides like Tron or Rise of the Resistance. Disney's Lightning Lane experience is better than Universal's Express Pass because they load people from that lane faster. Disney has also changed their rules around their Disability Access service and made it much harder to obtain a pass. Keep this in mind if you have children with special needs and have used that service in the past. Tip: If you want to stay at one of the Deluxe hotels on property, you can stay by renting Disney Vacation Club points. (Riviera has Skyliner access) See Kim's article on renting and using DVC points. Disney is building a new ride in the Avengers Campus and they are getting rid of the Tom Sawyer Island and Riverboat in Magic Kingdom to create Cars Land. Updates from Universal Orlando Note: Universal Orlando hosted Kim's family for this part of the trip. Kim stayed at the Loews Sapphire Falls, which is a Moderate property and does not include the Express Passes. The Sapphire Falls is within walking distance to the parks and guests get one hour early entry. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure still has very long lines. The nice thing about the Universal Express Passes don't require you to book any times online, so it is less stressful to manage. However, many people have these passes because they are staying at the premium hotels and the lanes load slowly so sometimes you don't save a lot of time (sometimes only about 10 minutes of time savings). There is a Universal Express Unlimited Pass that lets you ride a ride in the Express pass lane as much as you would like, without limits. Universal Orlando is building a whole new theme park in 2025 called Epic Universe. It is going to be further away from CityWalk and the other parks or hotels. It will also have another portion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Ministry of Magic.
