Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's May, which means it's time for the AIPT Movies podcast's “Mayhem” series! Where we cover movies that kick ass in the literal sense! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest Tony Sedani discuss Robert Rodriguez's shockingly accurate depiction of life as a traveling musician, 1995's Desperado! One of the best "walking away from an explosion" shots in movie history! An incredible opening scene! Action yoga! A 90s cell phone! A sudden ponytail! Family drama! An unfortunate case of mistaken identity! Mismatched shoes! Lots of slow motion! Tons of squibs and environmental destruction! Surprisingly loyal bandmates! Guitar case Miniguns! The biggest hand cannon you've ever seen! Shadow-based mystical powers and guns that appear from nowhere! Music from Los Lobos! A shocking explanation for disgusting public toilets! A cast that includes Quentin Tarantino playing a creep, Cheech Marin, Steve Buscemi, Danny Trejo dialing a phone with a knife, the original El Mariachi Carlos Gallardo, Salma Hayek causing car accidents, and Antonio Banderas being effortlessly cool! All this and more in a classic action movie with kinetic direction and visual storytelling from Robert Rodriguez that tells the story of an artist who must learn to work his magic in a completely different medium: death! In addition, Tony shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Spider-Man: Homecoming, Brian De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise, 2021's Mortal Kombat, and Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi, while Alex does the same for the documentary Everyone Is Lying to You for Money, the Netflix survival thriller Apex, Bob Odenkirk's Normal, and Over Your Dead Body! For 60% off your first order, go to https://incogni.com/mehdi Would you be surprised to find out that one of the leading investigators into the cryptocurrency industry is… a former teen heartthrob from the early 2000s TV series 'The O.C.'? Ben McKenzie became famous for playing bad boy Ryan Atwood in the hit 2003 drama, but he may end up being remembered for his work investigating and speaking out against the opaque crypto industry.  Ben is the writer, director, and star of the new documentary, 'Everyone Is Lying To You For Money', which documents his years-long look into the scammy, fraudulent, and oftentimes criminal world of cryptocurrency. He met up with Mehdi in Washington D.C. to talk about his new film and what drove him to make it. Mehdi and Ben unpack the film's globetrotting story — from Miami, to El Salvador, to London — as Ben follows the (figurative) money. Ben explains what exactly cryptocurrency is and uncovers why its evangelists want you to buy it so badly.  The two also discuss: How 'The O.C.' introduced an entire generation to class politics. Why Ben is supporting Brad Lander for Congress over Dan Goldman.  If taking corporate PAC money should be a litmus test for Democrats. Which Democrats have a shot at the presidency in 2028… This interview was published 10 days earlier on Zeteo.com. Fintech Recap: PFM's AI Moment, Super Apps, and the PACE Act

The Fintech Factor

We kick things off with personal financial management, a category I've been following through three distinct generations. From Mint and Credit Karma to newer subscription tools, the core problem hasn't changed; most folks don't want to manage their money. Now, with OpenAI acquiring Hiro and Perplexity AI partnering with Plaid, PFM is shifting from dashboards to AI agent interfaces. But is this solving an information problem, or a behavior problem? Next, we get into the return of the fintech super app, using Bolt (the one-click checkout company that raised $355M at an $11B valuation) as the case study. Despite years of hype, we get into why super apps keep failing in America (where consumers are  happy to use multiple apps on their phone as long as each one's great). Finally, we turn to the PACE Act, a proposed bill aimed at giving non-banks seeking access to Fed master accounts. It's a more formal attempt to solve a long-standing infrastructure problem, but the requirements raise an obvious question: if fintechs still need to navigate state licensing and the Fed retains discretion, who would actually benefit? Plus, in our Can't Let It Gos: Kalshi and Polymarket are moving into crypto perpetual futures, a Mexican merchant applied dynamic currency conversion without asking (Jason won the chargeback), and Ryan Atwood's second career as a crypto skeptic. Jen's guest today is Ben McKenzie, author of the new book EASY MONEY: CRYPTOCURRENCY, CASINO CAPITALISM, AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF FRAUD. In this incredibly fast-paced, relatable book, Ben, joined by journalist Jacob Silverman,  takes us on a journey into the dark side of crypto. You don't need any kind of expertise to follow along.  Plus, even if you've been around the bitcoin block before, you will appreciate the jaw-dropping encounters with the key players including  FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (before his indictment and extradition from the Bahamas), and Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky (before his indictment) who admitted to Ben at South by Southwest in early 2022 scope of this scam. Mashinsky said that only “ten to fifteen percent” of the crypto system was real money. “Everthing else,” he said “is just bubble.” Ben has been an outspoken critic of the cryptocurrency craze. Perhaps you saw him on C-Span in December of 2022, when he testified before the Senate Banking Committee for a hearing on the topic: The Crypto Crash: Why the FTX Bubble Burst and the Harm to Consumers.  During the hearing, Ben called FTX “the biggest Ponzi scheme in history” and told the senators that the 40 million Americans who have invested in crypto “have been lied to, in ways both big and small, by a once seemingly mighty crypto industry whose entire existence in fact depends on misinformation, hype and, yes, fraud.”  Not a C-Span cable network fan? You may also know Ben McKenzie from network television, the big screen, or more recently in his 2020 Broadway debut. EP196: The Truth Behind The U.S. Supply Chain Issue With Ryan Atwood, Owner Of H&A Farms And Ryan Lockman, Vice President of Sales and Procurement for North Bay Produce

The Produce Moms Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 14, 2022 38:31

“Every piece of the supply chain literally is being affected by inflation, from availability issues, to transportation, starting all the way down at the plant material and taking it all the way to the consumer.”   Ryan Lockman (23:21-23:45)   In the ladder part of 2021, you've probably experienced several delays in packages or going shopping for items that weren't at your local retailer. It's clear that we're in a crisis with the supply chain and the issues we're seeing, especially when we shop for groceries. There's a rising cost of goods, inflation, lack of supply to meet demand, and a struggle to get U.S. grown products in front of consumers.   Lori joined Ryan Atwood, one of the owners of H&J Farms in Florida, a blueberry grower and packer, and Ryan Lockman, the Vice President of Sales and Procurement for North Bay Produce, a long-standing partner with The Produce Moms and marketer of fresh produce. Lockman manages relationships with large grocery retailers like Kroger, Aldi's and Meyer, and also distributes Atwood's blueberries under the North Bay brand.   Since Ryan Atwood is someone who's on the front lines and starting point of the produce supply chain, he's formed a strong opinion as to where the rising cost of goods originated from. Atwood thinks labor costs went up at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of people deciding to stay home and get out of their 9-5 workforce jobs. In order to attract employees and talent, companies have had to raise their wages (something H & J Farms has done).   “Growers haven't received the proper returns for a long time. I wholeheartedly think that our growers have needed higher returns or larger profit margins since I started The Produce Moms.” Lori Taylor (13:15-13:34)   Ryan Atwood has experienced a firsthand result of inflation with fertilizer. Every year there's a fertilizer bid which, once the bid is received, it locks out the price for the entire year, however this year, Atwood was told fertilizer prices were only good for a mere 20 days. The fertilizer prices he was quoted in 2021 compared to 2020 completely doubled.    Ryan Lockwood also believes we're running into some very tough times because “the cost of growing fruit is increasing, but also on a daily basis the amount of mobile money the average retail consumer has to use on purchasing groceries is decreasing because of the rising cost of goods in retail.”   Every item across the produce department is increasing in cost and the availability is decreasing for the consumer. Consumers still want to eat healthy and buy wisely, but farmers have no choice but to charge a higher price than what the produce item was in the field, which inevitably makes certain produce items unattractive to consumers, such as blueberries.    “When you look at what the price of gas costs and the price hikes we've seen in proteins… We haven't seen that kind of inflation with fresh produce yet, but even the small hike in price (which is inevitable and will continue) has put commodities within the grocery store and the produce department at risk.” Ryan Lockman (19:18-19:49)   We aren't sure just yet how retailers and the supply chain are going to respond to the fact that the cost of producing and growing blueberries is rising and the result that creates when trickling down to the point of sale. There's a longer lead time for all things in the supply chain, from packaging, to cardboard, to the cost and availability of trucking, warehouse staff, and more. Ryan Lockman thinks lead times are higher than they've ever been in history.   This also affects our quality of food because when it finally hits the shelf it's a week older than it should be and also creates a delay in marketing plans for promotions and sales. Both Ryan's want consumers to understand this because it's important to know why you have to pay more for a superior product versus putting a subpar item on the shelf for a lesser price.    If you want to play your part in helping decrease our supply chain issues, support U.S. grown produce as much as possible. Relying on produce exports is creating a food security issue for our country and our American farmers and growers need your help. Jess From 'Gilmore Girls' Ruined My Dating Life

Bustle

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 13, 2020 5:14

I’ve always been drawn to dark-haired, emotionally unavailable men. First there was the volatile guy with a troubled past who I was convinced was hiding a sensitive soul (he wasn’t). Then came the non-committal literary agent, followed by the equally guarded former MMA fighter, who I knew would be the first one to throw a punch at a party. After dating enough impenetrable brunettes (one of whom actually looked like Milo Ventimiglia circa 2002), I came to the only logical conclusion: Jess from Gilmore Girls ruined my dating life. The first time I saw Jess Mariano, I was a naive middle schooler just looking for something to watch after I finished my homework. Then I turned on ABC Family, and a Gilmore Girls rerun changed my life forever: there was Jess, brooding around Stars Hollow in a leather jacket with a book and a scowl. I fell head over heels instantly. This unknowingly set off my pattern of dating guys who, in their own ways, subconsciously reminded me of Jess. And despite them all sharing his worst trait of being emotionally withdrawn, I haven't been able to let them go — even as a 28-year-old woman with a job, a bank account, and years of relationship experience to learn from. I’ve half-joked with my therapist for years that as my first love — OK, fictional crush — Jess doomed my romantic future. But experts on adolescent sexuality now confirm it. "Adolescence is a key time for exploring and entering romantic and sexual relationships, as well as for the development of one's own identity, and therefore this is a particularly important period for pop culture and other media influences," says Erica Scharrer, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. A 2018 University of Michigan study on how adult women view their childhood celebrity crushes in comparison to their current relationships backs this up. Early romantic connections to celebrities were formative for the women surveyed, “socializing them, perhaps unrealistically, about what to expect from romance and sex." For me, that’s meant seeing my partners’ issues as problems I can solve if I just love them hard enough, and settling for much less in return while I wait for them to grow. This is also Jess’ fault: though he begins Gilmore Girls lost, evasive, and sometimes hurtful, by the end of the series he’s communicative, fulfilled, and seemingly ready to be in a healthy and stable relationship with Rory. Unfortunately for me — and anyone else who crushed on characters like My So-Called Life’s Jordan Catalano, Veronica Mars’ Logan Echolls, Boy Meets World’s Shawn Hunter, and The O.C.’s Ryan Atwood — it’s Jess’ earlier qualities that make him so appealing. "Jess is a classic bad boy — he's complicated, troubled, inconsistent, interesting, and desperately afraid of messing everything up, which he inevitably does," says psychotherapist Leslie C. Bell, PhD, LCSW. "There's certainly the trope of the man in need of a good woman's love in order to heal him — there's some appeal in that. But mainly I think it's a little bit exciting for someone who is [as] rule-abiding as Rory to flirt a bit with a darker side of reality." As someone who identified with the book-loving, people-pleasing Rory, it makes perfect sense that I fell for the same type of guy as her. We’re both ambitious and motivated women who seek to be challenged, whether in school or our careers. Why wouldn’t that extend to our romantic lives? This desire to make the bad boy “good” is also one of the few challenges young women are shown undertaking in pop culture and media, which is another reason I may have been drawn to Jess, explains Dr. Emerald Christopher-Byrd, Assistant Professor of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Delaware. Though Christopher-Byrd assures me that my attraction to men like Jess isn't inherently bad, it comes with the "inevitable outcome of the person never changing." There’s no guarantee that if I persevere long enough, my partner will show up at my apartment to credit me with the publication of their novel or beg me to run away with them. Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is, sadly, not the screenwriter of my life. One challenge I can start to tackle, however, is my own dating patterns. Jess will always be my first love — and I’ll still absolutely never date a Logan Huntzberger — but with the validation that Jess is in fact partly to blame for my self-sabotaging habits, I can start to judge the men I date by who they are right now, not who they may or may not become based on their similarities to a fictional ideal I’ve held onto for 15 years. That being said, if you own a leather jacket and currently have something by Jack Kerouac tucked into the back pocket of your jeans, my DMs are open.
