From her first appearance in the Hebrew Bible, the Queen of Sheba has fascinated Jewish, Muslim and Christian writers. But do we know anything about her as a historical figure? And how has her story been told, used and reinterpreted throughout history? This episode traces the legends written about the Queen of Sheba across Europe, Africa and the Middle East from 600 BCE to today, exploring the ambiguous and contradictory depictions of her as a wise and powerful ruler, an exoticised and seductive woman, the founding member of an Ethiopian royal dynasty, and a possible half-demon!This is a radio edit of the original podcast episode. RHLSTP Book Club 59 - Sex Bomb. Rich chats to comedian Sadia Azmat about her memoir about being a horny Muslim (though much more than that). How important is it that publishing and comedy are representative of the population? Why did Sadia identify with the ugly sisters in Cinderella? Does feminism risk excluding diverse voices and experience? Why wearing the hajib was an act of rebellion. The importance of discussing sex openly. And how writing honestly about your personal experience can resonate with others from very different backgrounds. Sadia Azmat (stand-up comedian, writer and comedy producer) and Al Horner (Script Apart podcast, Empire Magazine) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Sadia's choice The Fighter. The Fighter is a 2010 biographical sports film directed by David O. Russell and based on professional boxers (and half-brothers) Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale). The film was inspired by the 1995 HBO documentary High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell, that features the Eklund-Ward family. It also stars Amy Adams as Micky's girlfriend Charlene and Melissa Leo as Alice Eklund-Ward (winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress). Bale's incredible performance as the crack addict Dicky also won him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, managing to bring humanity and humour to the former boxer struggling with addiction. While The Fighter doesn't necessarily follow the sports film formula it still packs a punch as a character focussed drama with Bale giving a standout performance. High recommendability and engagement scores give The Fighter a highly recommended overall score of 4.21. Welcome to "How To Be...", guiding you through life's tricky topics and skills by reading through the best books out there. It may be awkward because sex is taboo to talk about in our culture. People generally have shame around bodies and sexuality, so talking openly about sex and sexuality may bring up feelings of awkwardness. Many adults are afraid or uncomfortable when teenagers talk about sexuality and sexual activity. So how do we talk about sex openly? Hence, I spoke to comedian and Sex Bomb author Sadia Azmat on being open about sex, as well as other experts' books to see if their advice can help all of us. Please hit subscribe to hear the whole series on life skills and social change! It should be short and sweet. I look forward to journeying with you through this maze of hacks.

My guest this episode is comedian, writer, and podcast host, Sadia Azmat. Her new book "Sex Bomb: The Life and Loves of an Asian Babe" came out last week. It's hilarious, raunchy and raw. Sadia talks to me about her reasons for penning her memoirs, the complicated relationship between Desi culture and British-Asian identity, and why she's not a feminist.
Clive Anderson and Yasmeen Khan are joined by Lucy Worsley, Lynette Linton, Sadia Azmat and James Vincent for an eclectic mix of conversation, music and comedy. With music from Hinako Omori and Monophonics.
Sadia is a writer and comedian sharing her truth on being a young, Muslim woman from East London one joke at a time. She's given us the critically acclaimed BBC Podcast No Country For Young Women, made headlines that would make your mouth drop open, performed Stand Ups that would leave you ROTF and now she's telling it all in her debut book Sex Bomb (the life & loves of an Asian babe) where she discusses desirability, culture and dating traditions.
The entertaining, hilarious and conversation-shifting memoir about sex and life from the comedian, podcast host and writer, Sadia Azmat. Sadia is a comedian who loves sex. She is also a hijab-wearing Muslim woman. The two are in a lifelong relationship, but it's complicated. For fans of Everything I Know About Love, Wrong Knickers and The Right Sort of Girl this is the sidesplittingly funny and brilliantly raunchy memoir you don't want to miss. Sadia Azmat has many different sides to her, she is the good Muslim sister and the loud and proud comedian, she is the quiet and loving friend and the horny and outspoken one. So why does everyone put her in a box and expect her to choose between one or the other? In a life of ups and downs, swings and roundabouts, Sadia has learnt the hard way that she can embrace her sexuality and be a proud British-Indian Muslim. From discovering her sexual identity after seeing a copy of Asian Babes on the shelf in the corner shop to rejecting an arranged marriage and feeling distanced from her culture; from her experience dating white and Asian men to her tumultuous relationship with her headscarf, Sadia is unafraid to spill the honest truth. Sadia finds the funny in every experience she has and this audiobook explodes with personality, warmth and joy. This audiobook is for anyone who has ever felt different or alone - allow this audiobook to fill you up and propel you forward, because we all deserve to feel like a Sex Bomb.
Fetish Bones by Moor Mother delivers a powerful message via a sonically abrasive backdrop. Labelled by the artist herself as Black Girl Blues, Project Housing Bop or Slaveship Punk, it's an album that demands the listener's full attention. However, was it enough to hold Sadia Asmat's attention?
James and Sadia discuss the 2016 album One Tusk by Moth Equals. But, will Sadia be impressed by the plethora of different influences and Bollywood samples?

My guest this episode is Sadia Azmat, the brilliant and critically-acclaimed comedian, writer, producer, and podcaster. From reaching the final of Funny Women only 15 months after starting standup, her debut show ‘Please Hold - You're Being Transferred To A UK Based Asian Representative' was featured on BBC Front Row, followed up by her nationally-toured 2014 show ‘I Am Not Malala'. In 2018, she co-created the landmark (and Apple's ‘Top Pick') BBC Sounds podcast series 'No Country For Young Women', which she hosted alongside Monty Onanuga for its four seasons. And, as you'll hear, in the days running up to the recording of this episode, it was announced she would be publishing her first memoir and has just been hired as the newest BBC Comedy Producer. Among so many other things, we talk about making BBC Podcast history (in two ways), writing memoirs vs standup routines, and being inspired by both the dark poetry of Bill Hicks and the interviewing style of Larry King.

Its a fascinating chat with one of the most relevant voices currently on the circuit and I can't ABOUT SADIA AZMAT Sadia Azmat is a British Asian Stand-up comedian and writer from East London. Sadia Azmat and Monty Onanuga live in London but neither of them « look » British. Rokhaya Diallo and Grace Ly welcome the podcasters of No Country For Young Women (BBC Sounds) for a special episode. How different is it to be a non-white person in France and in the UK ? Are Paris and London mixed and diverse cities ? How do Sadia, Monty, Rokhaya and Grace deal with their identities ? And most importantly, why do these conversations matter ? For an hour, they talk about first names, life at work, burqa ban, (not so) cute French men, public spaces, colonial history and how to survive as a woman of colour in both countries. This episode was recorded live at the 2019 Paris Podcast Festival.BACKGROUND READING AND LISTENINGIn 2017, the New York Times published an editorial about how « France Fails to Face Up to Racism ». Two years later, Mediapart publishing editor Edwy Plenel says that the persistence of the systemic, social and cultural racism endured in France is a sign of how France has ignored the issue of colonialism. In a Keeping Athena Company first, Sadia refused plantain, albeit politely. I soldiered on to have the kind of conversation I swore blind I would never have on this podcast, the kind of conversation that is two comedians talking about comedy. However give this one a chance, it was bloody brilliant. We charge through taking offence (obviously), doing gigs on the Black, Muslim and 'mainstream' circuits, white supremacy and writing material on difficult subjects. I also give a handy definition of racism. More on Sadia Sadia is a stand up comedian and writer from East London. She's the host of hit podcast on the BBC, No Country for Young Women and BBC Radio 2's My Single Life. Neither of those shows are recorded in her mother's kitchen so they are already much more worthy of a listen than this one! Find her on Twitter: @sadia_azmats_ or Instagram: @sadia_azmats Enjoy!

From tiffs to barneys to blazing rows, arguments are a staple of life. Sophie Duker, Heidi Regan and Ned Sedgwick are joined by comedian Sadia Azmat to talk about the best and worst arguments they've had and how emotions and ego can get in the way of any constructive outcome. Sophie tells us why she loves a full-blooded debate, Ned asks a debating champion how to argue better, Heidi reveals why disagreeing is a bit like fencing, and Steve Ali has a take on a norm that spans all cultures: disapproving parents. Co-created by Deborah Frances-White for The Spontaneity Shop and BBC Radio 4. Produced by Al Riddell. Music by Mark Hodge and Omahrose, produced by Nick Sheldon. Clip: Woman's Hour (28/09/2012)

Drinking the bar dry this week is the brilliant Sadia Azmat. Sadia is a British Asian Stand-up comedian and writer from East London. A chance encounter with a comedian in a call centre introduced her to the circuit where she has been a regular stand-up to date.In 2018 Sadia launched her critically acclaimed BBC podcast “No Country For Young Women” which has enjoyed global success and consistent reviews from audiences and reviewers alike. The podcast explores Sadia and her friend discovering their roots and where to call home when your place of upbringing differs from those of your family.Masud knocked together…Virgin Mojito8 Mint Leaves¾ LimeSoda Water1 Tsp Brown SugarPut sugar and mint leaves in the bottom of a highball glass. Each week a new guest enters the bar and attempts to solve an unsolved mystery alongside the regulars. Hosted by Masud Milas, Chris Stokes, and Sooz Kempner. It’s a high concept comedy and true crime podcast, set in a fictional crime-solving bar (with real cocktails!). Ever feel like you missed something important when it comes to the news? A fact, a detail, or an event that it feels like everyone else knows about, and now you'd look like a moron if you asked someone to explain? Well, here's a podcast that will ask those questions so you don't have to.This week, host Danielle Ward is joined by Phoebe Griffith, Associate Director for Migration, Integration and Communities at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), who will explain everything there is to know about immigration to the United Kingdom. Danielle is joined by comedians Sadia Azmat (host of the BBC's No Country For Young Women) and Benjamin Partridge (writer and star of The Beef & Dairy Network Podcast).Questions asked and answered include:How many immigrants are there in the United Kingdom? How easy is it to get into the UK?What are the downsides to immigration? How can immigrants both be taking all our jobs AND claiming benefits?....so if you've sort of been guessing the answers based on a gut feeling, why not listen and find out for sure? And then subscribe to stay equally informed about other issues, as we get around to them. All our guests are on Twitter, so go and say hello - @phoebegriffith @sadia_azmats_ and @benpartridge, and Danielle is @captainward. And the show itself now has a Twitter account: @AnyStupidQs.
