In this special holiday edition of Faces of Digital Health, healthcare futurist and strategist Zayna Khayat, futurist and founder of NextMed Health Daniel Kraft and digital health expert, CEO of Transform.health Lucien Engelen discuss key trends in digital health and AI. The panel also touches on the role of new players in the health space like supermarkets and tech giants, the importance of prevention in healthcare, and the promising technologies poised to revolutionize the industry. Topics include: Key Trends in Digital Health in 2024 European Perspective on Digital Health AI's Impact on Healthcare Costs Future of Digital Health and AI Challenges in Healthcare Implementation Exciting Innovations in Digital Health The Role of Technology in Preventive Health Food, Health, and Corporate Responsibility Policy and Legislation in Healthcare See the video on Youtube: https://youtu.be/hwexC4heHGU?si=ut-V9rqx4yvh1V-X www.facesofdigitalhealth.com Newsletter: https://fodh.substack.com/
In this discussion, strategist, and applied health futurist Zayna Khayat explores the evolution of healthcare, particularly the shift towards home-based care and patient empowerment. Key themes include: Language in Healthcare: Khayat stresses the need for a language shift to change mindsets in healthcare, highlighting that words shape reality. She proposes retiring overused terms like “innovation,” “patient-centered,” and “telemedicine,” advocating instead for more precise language that reflects modern, patient-empowering approaches. Technology in Care Delivery: Khayat is excited about how AI and virtual reality (VR) are transforming healthcare. She sees AI as instrumental in reducing clinician workload by handling repetitive cognitive tasks, while VR is proving beneficial in medical training and therapies like pain and anxiety management. Shift to Home and Virtual Care: Drawing on her experience in home-based chemotherapy, Khayat discusses the challenges of moving healthcare out of hospitals, from reimbursement to infrastructure limitations. She emphasizes that many patients would prefer home care if given the choice, but practical barriers like resource availability and payment models persist. Diverse Aging Models: Khayat challenges the idea of care homes as a one-size-fits-all solution, advocating for diverse models tailored to individual preferences and cultural values. She highlights that community-based models, like those in Denmark and Japan, provide alternatives to institutional care, supporting aging in place. Value-Based Care and Accountability: Khayat encourages healthcare organizations to focus on results rather than processes. She advocates for outcome-based payment models, where organizations are compensated for results, pushing them to prioritize patient outcomes. This approach, she argues, would foster a value-driven healthcare system. www.facesofdigitalhealth.com Newsletter: https://fodh.substack.com/
Zayna Khayat, an applied health futurist, discusses the role of futurism in healthcare and the need for organizations to embed futurism into their operating models. She explains that futurism is about understanding the possible futures that might unfold in healthcare and helping organizations make smarter decisions based on those futures. In this conversation, Joan and Zayna discuss the need for a new approach to primary care and the challenges faced by healthcare professionals. They explore the concept of the four quadrants of primary care and the need for a diverse and adaptable healthcare workforce. Il titolo era Zayna of the Dawn. Welcome to Healthcare Change Makers, a podcast produced by HIROC. I'm Ellen Gardner with Michelle Holden and Philip de Souza. Today we're talking with Zayna Khayat and Will Falk. Zayna is Vice President, Client Success and Growth at Teladoc Health. Will is a Senior Fellow at the CD Howe Institute and has an appointment at the University of Toronto as an Executive-in-Residence at Rotman. Zayna and Will have collaborated in many different ways over the years and delight in wading into the messy problems in healthcare. They don't always agree, but Zayna and Will are united in their desire to use technology to move care forward. That task, they readily admit is hard work. As they call it, the clash of the static and the dynamic – when the industrial age and technological age collide with not always pleasant results. The real satisfaction comes from breaking down the barriers to thinking big and getting stuff done. The tools they're using and approach they're advocating doesn't just improve access to care, it delivers culturally appropriate care to communities that have been isolated in the past. It's all about hanging out with the future, something Zayna and Will agree is a highly privileged place to be. Quotables “The thing that really gets me going these days is working with young founder teams who are dealing with tough problems.” - WF “One of the great things about having to teach MBA students and other learners is having to explain yourself in front of really smart people.” – WF “As soon as I see the doubt, the skepticism, hear ‘it's impossible', then I think time to double down, that's the lock and I got the key!” – ZK “In talking to people, many of whom were on the frontlines during the pandemic, I was blown away by how hard people worked in spite of the technological choices that are available.” – WF “A study done by Dr. Eric Topol and the NHS in the UK concluded that 90% of all jobs will change because of what's happening now and coming in tech. That's a massive reskilling, retooling of the current workforce, let alone how you breed and train the next generation.” – ZK “As soon as our tools can de-couple time and place from care, you've got a real gamechanger for access.” – ZK “If you think economically about the fact that a public visit to a free provider costs the average Canadian $99 – that's a big barrier for a lot of people.”– WF “I'm not conceding the compassion high ground to anyone who's advocating physical care over virtual care because it is not at all clear to me that the compassionate answer for most people is to insist that they show up in your office when other alternatives exist.” – WF “No matter where you are – student, administrator, clinician, department chair – I always say, at least 10% of your capacity, 1/2 a day a week has to be blowing up the past and putting it together for the future.” – ZK Mentioned in this Episode: Teladoc Health Verto Health Chris O'Connor - FirstHx Rotman School of Management Computer Sciences Corporation Robert Wachter – The Digital Doctor Why Doctors hate their computers by Atul Gawande John Nosta – The Emerging Role of TQ Matthew Mendelsohn – Mowat Centre Dr. Eric Topol Scripps Canada Health Infoway The State of Virtual Care in Canada as of Wave Three of the COVID 19 Pandemic: An early Diagnostique and Policy Recommendations by Will Falk Revera Access More Interviews with Healthcare Leaders at HIROC.com/podcast Follow us on Twitter, and listen on iTunes. Zayna and Jonathan talk to authors Lori-Beth Bisbey, Anita Cassidy and Meg-John Barker about the challenges of writing both fiction and non-fiction that either focuses on or touches on consensual non monogamy. Lori Beth and Meg-John are both therapists. Lori Beth has written fiction, memoir and self-help, recently publishing Dancing the Edge to Reclaiming Your Reality (a guide for survivors of gaslighting and trauma). Meg-John is probably best known for the iconic Rewriting the Rules but has also written a pile of others including Life Isn't Binary, and Gender, a graphic guide. Anita is the author of the novel Appetite and runs the website Alethya, a community for people interested in pursuing conscious relationships.
We're joined by therapist and author Jessica Fern to discuss attachment theory and the lens it gives us onto consensual non-monogamy monogamy. Attachment theory grew out of the work of researchers John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth. It began as a study of childhood attachment to primary caregivers and evolved into a framework that helps illuminate the dynamics of close relationships through life. It tracks people's attachment styles on two axes, self esteem and sociability and broadly divides those styles into four quadrants - secure, avoidant/dismissive, anxious/preoccupied and fearful. Jessica's book polysecure considers CNM in the context of attachment theory and, together with Jonathan and Zayna, she explores what it has to tell us.

Zayna and Jonathan get personal this month and talk about insecurity with help from Jamie in Singapore and from Kevin Patterson, author of the excellent book Love's Not Color Blind who joins us on the line from Philadelphia. Almost everyone has to deal with insecurity whether they're monogamous or non-monogamous, but within CNM there can be extra pressures because our partners are free to date other people and we compare ourselves unfavourably to their other loves. Jamie talks about insecurities arising out of trust issues with a former partner, Kevin speaks about imposter syndrome, Jonathan about the experience of being an adoptee and Zayna about feeling less-than in her professional field.
We have another TWO guest episode! I know, exciting right? On top of that, the episode is about BASKETBALL! How can it get any better? Do you mean other than Chris hosting? Today we're joined by Adam Mamawala and Mike Schubert of Horse HOOPS podcast, we're also joined by WNBA player and EuroLeague star Jacki Gemelos as she tells us about her journey through basketball. Horse HOOPs - The NBA is now a 365-day league and it's never been more present in pop culture. From Kevin Durant's burner accounts to LeBron taking his talents anywhere to trusting the Process, the NBA is becoming a pop culture requirement. At the same time, sports can have gatekeepers that make it insular and frustrating for people who aren't die-hard fans. We're here to prove that basketball is entertaining to follow for all fans, whether you're actively watching the games or not. On HORSE, we don't analyze wins and losses. We talk beefs, dig into Internet drama, and have fun. Our show is divided into three parts: 1) Full Court Press: News. But good and silly and important news, like Space Jam 2 trailers 2) That Actually Happened: A dive into the weird and wild history of basketball. 3) 3 on 3: We rank our three favorite and three least favorite things about basketball. Logos, jerseys, nicknames, you name it! Jacki Gemelos - Jacki Gemelos is the epitome of resilience. Widely regarded as the top recruit in the nation in high school, Gemelos has overcome a number of knee injuries throughout her college career at USC to go on to be drafted in the third round of the 2012 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx. Despite her injuries, sustaining 5 ACL tears in 6 years, Gemelos remained one of the most skilled players in the game, won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2011 World University Games, and is a former National Player of the Year and McDonald's All-American. Jacki continues to play overseas and in 2020 signed with the WNBA's Connecticut Sun and Washington Mystic. Jacki was born November 22, 1988, in Stockton, California. She is the daughter of Linda and Steve Gemelos. She has two sisters, Johnna and Zayna. Her father Steve Gemelos, of Greek descent, played college basketball at Weber State and San Joaquin Delta, followed by two years of professional basketball in Greece. In 2012, Jacki became a dual citizen of the US and Greece. She has played in the WNBA, Europe, national for team USA and Greece, and more. Polyamory isn't all triads (throuples) quads and poly families. Lots of people do polyamory solo and are their own primaries. Zayna and Jonathan talk to Eunice in London and Kelli in Seattle about the great things about being SoPo and also the challenges - 'who turns up at the hospital?', social pressure to get on the relationship escalator and lack of representation in the media. It's just a great discussion. Tune in!
Zayna and Jonathan welcome psychologist and intimacy coach Dr Lori Beth Bisbey, and UK Polyday organisers Charlotte Davies, Morgan Grey and Eunice Hung for a wide-ranging discussion about some of the things that sometimes trip people up when they explore consensual non monogamy. We talk unicorn hunters, couples' privilege, communication, self knowledge and more!
Released to mark the International Day of Consent - November 30th - Zayna and Jonathan ask Jenny Wilson, of campaigning group Consent Culture, and author, psychotherapist and mentor Meg-John Barker to walk us through the vital issue of consent. It's a great listen - two really switched on people who have thought long and deep about what we need to focus on when we're looking for consent.
The concluding part of our look at some of the terms and ideas you'll encounter when exploring consensual non monogamy. Zayna and Jonathan chat to poly researcher Daniel Cardoso of Manchester Metropolitan University.
To launch our foray into the world of consensual non monogamy we start by looking at some of the terms you'll find used in CNM. Jonathan and Zayna are joined by Daniel Cardoso. Daniel is a research fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University, whose field of study is CNM activism in both his native Portugal and in the UK.

Ben & Jay welcome back Dr. Zayna Khayat, Future Strategist of SE Health to discuss their new book, The Future of Aging. Zayna is also on the faculty of Singularity University and the Rothman School of Management. The Future of Aging is an exciting collaboration between SE Health and Idea Couture, a global strategic innovation and experience design firm. As "a counter-argument to the common thinking and discourse around aging put forth in academia, business and popular culture", this book will appeal to many leaders, healthcare or otherwise, with a vested interest in serving older adults through products or services. And it's thought-provoking, if not moving, at a personal level.Buy and review the book on AmazonFollow Zayna and her team on Twitter: @ZaynaKhayat @SEFuturesFollow us on Twitter: @SherpaPod @TheBenReport @JayGerhartAlso by Idea Couture: The Futures of Health: Spaces Places of CareSupport the show (https://healthpodcastnetwork.com/)
