O cessate. Hoor maar, en stop niet.

Most of us are familiar with the figure of Bambi - the wide-eyed young fawn at the centre of Walt Disney's heart-warming 1942 animation, who finds love and friendship in the forest as he comes to terms with growing up. However, few people are aware of Bambi's roots - as an unflinching and grisly parable about the violence of nature and the cruelty of man, which has more in common with Animal Farm than with Dumbo. It is a work red in tooth and claw, where animals discuss the experience of "being born to be killed". It is also largely forgotten. Cultural historian Christopher Frayling travels to Vienna to tell the true story of Bambi. Disney's Bambi was based on the 1928 American translation of Austrian writer Felix Salten's Bambi: The Story of a Life in the Forest, originally published in Vienna in 1922. This translation toned down the darker aspects of Salten's story, to turn Bambi into a children's book about furry animals and their friends. This may have been an astute commercial move, but latest research suggests that Bambi: The Story of a Life in the Forest, in its original form, was an allegory of the persecution of Jews in Europe. Over 100 years on from the publication of Salten's book, it is time to tell the true story of Bambi. In this week's episode, I am talking to Sam Armstrong from Walx Derwent and Dales, in Derbyshire. Sam had worked in the fitness industry for several years, when she discovered Nordic Walking. Recognising the benefits that exercise outdoors had on physical and mental health she was inspired to set up her business and empower others in 2008. Over the years, Sam's love of walking has taken her all over Europe and the UK and last year, she qualified as a Mountain Leader. She has organised walking Festivals in the Peak District and is planning one with her colleague Nicola Sproson* from 6-8 May in the Lake District. Sam is also a carer to her eldest daughter and she has kindly agreed to talk to me today, about how Nordic Walking helped her through the most difficult period of her life.*Nicola has been a guest TWICE on Walking on Air. Compromised digestion could be one of the greatest reasons people feel sluggish and two steps behind on their day. In this episode of Real Talk, I chat with my gal pal and friend Sam Armstrong who is a dietician based in my home town Brisbane. Poor digestion unfortunately is all too common and just one of the reasons we find ourselves feeling low in energy, flat, sluggish, lethargic and cognitively slow. Chances are, you are negatively influencing your digestion without even knowing and feeling belly bloat as a result. The good news is that there are some simple lifestyle fixes which you can start implementing today. Let it be known that bloating is not normal and especially not normal to experience on a regular basis. If you experiencing bloating and especially on a regular basis, please recognise that your body is giving you a sign that it needs help and that it is having to do a job beyond what it is designed to do. In this week's podcast, I speak with my good friend and gal pal Sam Armstrong who is a dietician from my home town of Brisbane. This episode feels way overdue. The number of times I hear people complain that their metabolism has slowed down after turning 40 or after the birth of their second child, let's just say if I had a dollar… Like with most aspects of life, it can be easy to outsource and shit the blame often without knowing or realising how much influence we can have on something. I wanted to empower people and remind them that age impacts metabolism far less than they realise and that they do in fact have the power to influence their metabolism far more than they know. Without giving away too much, there a several lifestyle factors that can influence and positive contribute to your metabolism irrespective of your age. Think of metabolism like a muscle or any other bodily function or feature - you lose it if you don't use it yeah. Because mean people do not understand what metabolism is or how it works, they do not know how they can influence it; what can be helpful to know is that there is plenty that can be done to increase the rate of it though many people without realising are slowing down their metabolism. As always, please connect with Sam using the social links provided and leet us know what your main takeaways are in the comments. We present again a 2019 chat with Gordon Spinks, a high profile jockey of the 1960's and 70's. Gordon talks of the heart attack he suffered while driving from Longreach to Brisbane in 2019. He didn't realise what had happened to him. The 73 year old says his heart issues aren't over yet. The former outstanding jockey looks back on childhood days in Sydney, and the neighbour's pony he couldn't wait to ride. Gordon reflects on the newspaper advertisement which led him to Theo Green's stable. He recalls the track gallops with Theo by his side and the start of his mateship with Ron Quinton. Spinks explains why he preferred to use his middle name rather than his given christian name. Gordon remembers his very first winner at Mudgee and his initial city win. He recalls the beginning of a successful association with Tommy Smith. He was stunned when the top trainer started giving him Gr 1 rides when he was still an apprentice. Gordon has never forgotten a last to first win on NZ mare Unpainted in the 1968 Doncaster. The champion jockey looks back on his first Gr 1 win as a fully fledged jockey- again courtesy of T.J. Smith. Gordon remembers Black Onyx , a great sprinter of the 60's and 70's who gave him a Doomben $10,000 win. He looks back on a retainer as number two jockey for leviathan owner Stan Fox. He talks of his admiration for the stable's top jockey Athol Mulley. Gordon talks of a “working holiday” in England where he rode for leading trainer Sam Armstrong. He remembers many a jogging session with Armstrong's son-in-law Lester Piggott. He recalls another overseas stint at the suggestion of Irish training wizard Dermot Weld. On arriving home he began his association with Jack and Bob Ingham who were spending freely at the yearling sales. Gordon reflects on his final overseas adventure in Tehran where racing had just begun. The sport was doomed from the moment the Shah was overthrown in 1979. Older racing people will remember the deeds of Gordon Spinks. I hope younger “podcasters” will tune in to find out just how good he was in an era of outstanding jockeys.

In this week's episode, I am back speaking with my good friend and dietician Sam Armstrong on how you can eat for a healthy thyroid. So many of my Superstar ✨ clients come to me with thyroid issues and concerns so I thought I might as well tap into the wealth of knowledge that is Sam Armstrong and find out how we can eat for a healthy thyroid. Turns out, thyroid is super important especially when it comes to a healthy metabolism and ability to lose weight and shift body fat and the good news is that there is a lot we can do to support the thyroid when it comes to lifestyle and nutrition. Now don't get me wrong, neither one of us are endocrinologists so if you feel that you may have a thyroid condition, it's best you go and see a hormone expert but if you have a sub-clinical thyroid condition, chances are, you will uncover a lot of little gems in this episode with chronic fatigue being a major indication you may have thyroid related issues - who knew?! All too often we get used to feeling a certain way without questioning it or taking time to investigate those symptoms and fatigue certainly fits into that category. Being pulled in so many different directions and having so many responsibilities and commitments between work, family and personal life, we can become very accepting of tiredness and chronic fatigue. Following this conversation with Sam, I am seeing the value in questioning how acceptable chronic fatigue should be because there may be a lot more to it than meets the eye. Interesting to learn too that the often bloodwork does not reveal all when it comes to thyroid as some markers mirror each other on a chemistry level and hence why it is SO important to be working with someone who knows what they're doing and what to look out for if you are experiencing some of the symptoms we cover.

Yaa gets to chat with Sam in today's episode. Sam Armstrong is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Sports Dietitian, and Silver Level Swim Coach from Brisbane, Australia. She has over 10 years of experience working with adolescent athletes. Her goal is simple; she wants to ensure that no teenager is limited from reaching their goals by the food they eat. This drive comes from Sam's own past, where she was a very successful teenage athlete until sickness, eating disorders and a general lack of understanding of her health and nutrition eventually drove her out of the sport she loved. These days she loves to work with teenagers to empower them to know how food affects their growth and performance, but also to help their families by providing simple food solutions. “Good nutrition is free speed.
