In this episode, we're diving into a trio of "the"-titled features, starting with our Top 5 Definite Articles in film and TV, followed by a look at Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans, and rounding off with the delightful antics of The Smurfs.Top 5 Definite Articles in Film and TV:The Godfather (1972) - A cinematic masterpiece that redefined the crime genre and gave us one of the most iconic characters in film history, Don Vito Corleone. The Dark Knight (2008) - Christopher Nolan's gritty take on Gotham's hero brought depth, realism, and a legendary performance from Heath Ledger as the Joker. The Office (2005-2013) - A sitcom that revolutionized mockumentary-style comedy and introduced the world to Michael Scott's awkward brilliance. The Thing (1982) - John Carpenter's chilling horror-thriller remains a benchmark for practical effects and paranoia-driven storytelling. The Matrix (1999) - A sci-fi classic that questioned reality and revolutionized action choreography with its "bullet time" visuals.Main Feature: The Fabelmans (2022) Directed by Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans is a semi-autobiographical film that reflects on the legendary filmmaker's own life, capturing the wonder, complexity, and challenges of growing up in a family where art and reality often intersect. Gabriel LaBelle stars as Sammy Fabelman, a young boy enchanted by the power of cinema, with Michelle Williams and Paul Dano portraying his loving but imperfect parents.Set in the 1950s and 60s, the film chronicles Sammy's discovery of filmmaking and his growing passion amidst family tensions and personal dilemmas. Spielberg crafts a deeply personal story that explores how art can be an escape, a confrontation, and a way of understanding the world. With a blend of nostalgia and emotional depth, The Fabelmans showcases the director's love for the medium while delving into the challenges of family life. It's a celebration of creativity, dreamers, and the power of storytelling. The Smurfs For the little ones (and the young at heart), The Smurfs bring a mix of charm, humour, and life lessons. Originally created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo, the tiny blue characters have enchanted audiences for generations. The 1980s animated series and subsequent films follow Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, and their fellow Smurfs as they navigate the magical forest, often thwarting the evil plans of the bumbling wizard Gargamel and his cat Azrael. These pint-sized adventurers deliver plenty of laughs, but the stories often come with underlying messages about cooperation, kindness, and problem-solving. Whether through the classic cartoon or recent movies, The Smurfs remain a colorful and fun escape. This episode dives deep into the importance of the small things—whether it's a single word that gives a title its iconic flair, a passion for filmmaking that shapes a life, or little blue creatures teaching big lessons.

Fabelhaft. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode of Over The Teacup Sunday, we're going to wrap up what we could accomplish with our limited series about the 2023 Oscar nominated films and talent. Today we're going to explore The Fablemans, the 2023 Oscar nominated film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg. This film is loosely based on Spielberg's childhood and is the story of Sammy Fabelman, as a young man from seven to eighteen. Through Sammy's journey, we discover a shattering family secret, a true purpose in life to create movies, and the power of those movies to help us see the truth about each other and ourselves. The Fablemans is produced and directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg. Starring Michelle Williams, Gabriel LaBelle, Paul Dano, and Judd Hirsch, this film is a loose adaptation of Spielberg's childhood growing up in post-World War II era Arizona and how he moved to California changed everything. The film steeped in nostalgia and emotion. Set in post-World War II Arizona, we follow a young man named Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) as he discovers a shocking family secret. We follow him through his childhood, adolescence and young adulthood as he explores the power of films and how they can help us to understand the truth about ourselves and each other. It is not an easy task, as he faces daily bullying from his classmates and a strained relationship with his parents. Through it all, he finds solace in the movies he watches, finding an escape in the stories and characters that he watches on the big screen. The performances from the cast are simply outstanding. Michelle Williams and Paul Dano both give nuanced and heartfelt performances as Sammy's parents, while Gabriel LaBelle captures the wide-eyed innocence of Sammy as he navigates through his own personal journey. Judd Hirsch is a standout as Sammy's Grandfather, but the entire cast is excellent, but it's LaBelle who truly stands out among the rest. The younger Sammy is played by Mateo Zoryan, his sisters through the years are played by Keeley Karsten, Alina Brace, Julie Butters, and Birdie Borria and they all do a brilliant job! The Fablemans explores the importance of family secrets and how the power of movies can help us to come to terms with them. Overall, this movie is a powerful and moving film that will leave you thinking and feeling. The performances of the actors, the beautiful cinematography, and the examination of the power of movies makes this an incredible film that captures the pain, anguish, and joy of growing up, as well as the power of friendship, love, and family and it should not be missed. https://beforeyougopodcast.comThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacyPodcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy
This week on End Credits, we're going to talk about movie magic. Of course, that's essentially the basis of this show, but on this episode we're deconstructing some of that magic with the person more credited than most with creating it. We're going to review The Fabelmans and we're also going to turn a famous director's illustrious career into a game. This Wednesday, March 1, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Tim Phillips will discuss: The Spielberg Draft. We've talked a lot about Steven Spielberg on this show, and why wouldn't we because if you grew up anytime during the 70s and afterwards then Spielberg has been a pretty big part of your pop culture experience. This week, we will draft what we think is the best work for the director from each of the last five decades, or "Spielb-eras", and come up with another definitive list of the best from the Greatest of All Time (?). The Fabelmans (2022). In Steven Spielberg's 34th movie, he finally turns the camera on himself. A lot of Spielberg's movies have been about some aspect of the director's inner-life, but The Fabelmans is very explicitly *his* story, and that of his family. In the 1950s, young Sammy Fabelman is taken to The Greatest Show on Earth, the Oscar-winning movie, and he's set on a course that will take him to the upper strata of Hollywood, but not before his family breaks up and apart, which would further inform Sammy's - Steven's - vision. So how does this one rank? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Alison Herman hands it over to guest moderator Judd Apatow for a live conversation with Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner about their latest collaboration, THE FABELMANS. Steven Spielberg a screenwriter, director, producer, and studio executive. In a career spanning over four decades, Spielberg has directed nearly three dozen feature films and written or cowritten the screenplays for four. His directorial work has covered many themes and genres–from science-fiction and adventure films to subjects like the Holocaust, the Transatlantic slave trade, war, and terrorism. He has been the subject of widespread critical acclaim, and numerous awards and accolades including 19 nominations and 3 wins at the Academy Awards, multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations and wins, and the 2015 United States Presidential Medal of Freedom, among many others. Tony Kushner is a celebrated playwright, author, and screenwriter who is perhaps best known for writing the acclaimed play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes—and its TV miniseries adaptation—as well as for his collaborations with Steven Spielberg as screenwriter of MUNICH, LINCOLN—both of which earned him Oscar nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay—and the 2022 adaptation of WEST SIDE STORY. Angels in America earned Tony both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1993, and he received Emmy and Writers Guild Awards for its onscreen adaptation. He also received the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama in 2013. Together, Steven and Tony cowrote the screenplay for THE FABELMANS, which Steven also directed. The semi-autobiographical story of Spielberg's own adolescence follows a young Sammy Fabelman as he falls in love with movies after his parents take him to see "The Greatest Show on Earth." Armed with a camera, Sammy starts to make his own films at home, much to the delight of his supportive mother - and discovers how the power of films can help him see the truth about his dysfunctional family and those around him. The Oscar- and Writers Guild Award-nominated film was released in November 2022 and is now available on most major SVOD platforms. Moderator Judd Apatow is a writer, director, comedian, and producer known for his work writing and directing films such as THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, KNOCKED UP, and FUNNY PEOPLE, among many others. In 2012, he received the Writers Guild of America, East's Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence. --- Before it was a podcast, OnWriting was a print publication. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/delefoco/message
Steven Spielberg's long-awaited semi-autobiographical reminiscence of his childhood is here, and it's perfect. Too perfect. José swoons over the way The Fabelmans transports him to its place and time and shows love and understanding to everybody it depicts, but has to admit that a few rougher edges here and there would have done it a favour. There's only so much drama in the life of Spielberg's young avatar, Sammy Fabelman, and that which there is is on the tame side. But Spielberg's love for his parents is obvious and appealing, as is his love for cinema, which he's unafraid to get specific about - the sequences that show Sammy making and screening films convey an interest in the aesthetics, technicalities, and effects of film, rather than giving it the far vaguer "magic of the movies" treatment such "love letters to cinema" often offer. The Fabelmans is as unwilling to explore the dark side of humanity as we're used to Spielberg being, but it avoids his proclivity for schmaltz, and José loved it. So there. Recorded on 31st January 2023.

Last month saw the release of two autobiographical films, now both Oscar nominees, about young artists growing up in complicated, 20th-century American Jewish families. In The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg follows a precocious child filmmaker, Sammy Fabelman, as he turns his camera on his fracturing family. In Armageddon Time, James Gray meditates on Queens in 1980, where the intersections of school, family, and the police destroy a friendship between two boys, one Black and one Jewish. Do these movies have something new to say about the drama of upwardly mobile Jewish family life, or are they simply retreading familiar territory? Jewish Currents contributing writer Rebecca Pierce joined editors Arielle Angel, Ari Brostoff, and Mari Cohen on this week's On the Nose to discuss the latest in Jewish film. Merry Chongsmas and Happy Chongnukkah! Yes indeed we did see the lauded new Spielberg film The Fabelmans AKA Spielberg: The Boy Genius Origin Story. Oh man do we have things to say about this film! As it is going to be bulldozing its way through awards season, we have to try to inject some sense of sanity into the Spielberg-worshipping publicity machine. We went into this film with open minds and hearts, but after watching all 2 hours and 30 minutes, we came out with some harsh words for our boy Spielberg. This film is now on VOD so watch it and then hear our take. Or if you can't stomach watching it, just listen to us. And if you loved the film, then hear us out. It'll give you much to talk about over the holiday dinner table. The film stars Gabriel LaBelle as the boy wonder Sammy Fabelman, Michelle Williams as his mom Mitzi Fabelman, Paul Dano as his dad Burt Fabelman, and a horribly miscast Seth Rogen as their friend Bennie. Judd Hirsch also has a small role as Uncle Boris, and there's a very special film director cameo at the end that we won't spoil here. It's time to Meet The Fabelmans!

OK spoiler alert! Today I'm telling the whole story of how I came to work with a Hollywood Costumer named Danielle to help outfit the actors in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans. I took my family to see the movie on Thanksgiving Day. I had really been hesitant to do a video about my involvement until I saw the final cut. You never know how things are going to turn out and I wasn't sure if they would have made changes since my involvement was more than a year ago. But the uniforms were awesome, the portrayal of Sammy Fabelman's time in Scouts was awesome (can you tell I am a child of the 80s?) and I loved the movie. The overall arc of the story line is heavily focused on the family dynamics. But the the parts in the beginning of the movie with his patrol and troop were just plain fun to watch. Of course in this episode I'll have a giveaway and an unboxing! Oh and if you've read this far down I have an Easter Egg surprise for you. Something that I just found this morning when I was doing my homework for this episode. I was so shocked when I found this that I immediately called my wife and had one of those moments on the phone where she first asked "is everything ok?". Watch to find out!
