In her acclaimed films Joanna Hogg blurs the lines between her art and her life. As she releases her first ghost story film, The Eternal Daughter - an exploration of a mother and daughter relationship with Tilda Swinton playing both roles, she talks to Antonia Quirke about the craft involved in making art inspired by her life. Satellite imagery might make maps today more accurate, but we haven't stopped wanting to see creative, imaginative maps that are also about story telling, from illustrations in books to mapping out fantasy worlds. Antonia meets two contemporary map makers: Jamie Whyte who creates illustrative maps and Luke Casper Pearson who maps the virtual worlds in computer games. Artist Ghislaine Leung who's been shortlisted for this year's Turner Prize uses a “score” – similar to musical scores – to create a relationship with those who help to construct her work in galleries. Re-using discarded objects and highlighting her conflicting demands as both artist and mother are central to her work. Her work can be seen at the Towner Eastbourne, and the winner of the prize will be announced in December.

The Eternal Daughter & Skinamarink Podcast: Filme zum Einschlafen? Ganz klar: Sinamarink polarisiert. Warum? Woman in Revolt

The “Souvenir” films follow a character named Julie, a filmmaker who grew up in Norfolk as the only child in a posh, uppercrust family with parents played by Tilda Swinton and James Spencer Ashworth. The character is loosely autobiographical, which is something Joanna Hogg has discussed in several interviews. All of the old, Super 8 footage featured in the films comes from Hogg's own time in film school and Julie's Knightsbridge flat In the first two films of the trilogy is a recreation of Hogg's own flat at that time (among several other parallels). Julie, played by Honor Swinton Byrne, lives in London and attends film school. The first film centers around Julie's relationship with Anthony (Tom Burke), a guy she meets at a party and grows increasingly attached to despite many glaring red flags. At the end of the film, he dies of a heroin overdose. In “The Souvenir Part II,” Julie starts processing her grief through a new, feature-length film about her relationship with Anthony. While the first film is more about her relationship and how it affects her artistic ambitions, the second film is centered around those artistic ambitions and how she melds them with her personal life for both self understanding and a form of therapy. The third film, “The Eternal Daughter,” shows Julie, now much older and played by Tilda Swinton, on vacation with her mother, Rosalind (also played by Swinton), at a hotel that was once her family home. This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a special conversation between The Eternal Daughter director Joanna Hogg and filmmaker Martin Scorsese. The two talked about discovering each other's filmography, Hogg's lifelong friendship with Tilda Swinton, and the process of creating art out of grief.  The Eternal Daughter follows a middle-aged filmmaker and her elderly mother who take an eerie, emotional trip to the past when they stay at a fog-enshrouded hotel in the English countryside. The great Joanna Hogg uses this Victorian gothic scenario for an entirely surprising, impeccably crafted excavation of a parent-child relationship starring Tilda Swinton in a performance of rich, endless surprise. You've likely seen the viral Signal for Help that women have been sharing on social media since the pandemic started but you probably don't know that this initiative was created by the Canadian Women's Foundation. Pamela Di Pinto is the manager of the Signal for Help and joins me today to share how it started, some very public success stories of it working, and more importantly how you should respond should someone send you this signal. Christmas with teens can be challenging for both sides. Parents are often left shellshocked as their sweet excitable child is replaced by a sullen anti-social teen, and teens are left wondering what all the fuss is about anyway. Aly Pain, What She Said's expert on the parent/teen dynamic is here today with some tips for getting through this year's holiday with comfort, and joy. Anne Brodie has heaps of new entertainment including South Korea's stunning espionage thriller Hunt, the emotionally charged The Eternal Daughter starring the amazing Tilda Swinton playing a dual role as mother and daughter, the wait is finally over Three Pines on Amazon Prime, and the very steamy, super hot Lady Chatterley's Love on Netflix that is going to give the wedding scene on The Highlander a run for it's money. Layoffs are becoming headlines all too frequently right now and it can cause anxiety for those that fear they may be next. With THE FABLEMANS, what appeared to be Steven Spielberg's portrait of the filmmaker as a young man turns out to be a more complicated autopsy of a family coming apart at the seams—that happens to have a budding filmmaker there to document it. Adam and Josh have lots of praise for Spielberg, his co-conspirator/co-screenwriter Tony Kushner, and the film's cast, but a few minor issues may reflect a weakness that appears more broadly in the director's work. Director Joanna Hogg has worked almost exclusively in an autobiographical vein: her acclaimed 2019 film “The Souvenir” and last year's sequel “The Souvenir, Part II,” had Hogg revisiting and re-examining her film student days. Her latest, THE ETERNAL DAUGHTER, continues the director's audacious self-reflexivity, this time casting Tilda Swinton in a double role as Hogg surrogate Julie and also as Julie's mother, Rosalind. Hogg's film is both a meta-meditation on what it means to be an artist—and a ghost story. This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a programmers preview of our Yoshimitsu Morita retrospective and a conversation from the 60th New York Film Festival between filmmakers Joanna Hogg & Kelly Reichardt.  First up, listen to programmers Dan Sullivan and Aiko Masubuchi dive into the career and films of Yoshimitsu Morita, one of the most fascinatingly idiosyncratic and prolific directors in modern Japanese cinema. Our Yoshimitsu Morita retrospective takes place through December 11 with special introductions during opening weekend. Get tickets and All-Access Passes at filmlinc.org/morita.  After the preview, we're revisiting an NYFF60 conversation with The Eternal Daughter director Joanna Hogg and Showing Up director Kelly Reichardt. Two of the leading auteurs of contemporary cinema, Joanna Hogg and Kelly Reichardt have built acclaimed bodies of work that stand out for their epic existential scope and intimate emotional textures. With The Eternal Daughter and Showing Up, respectively, Hogg and Reichardt take their filmmaking into new territories, exploring the poetic and prosaic imbrications of life and art, particularly in the personal and professional worlds of female artists.  We were pleased to bring Hogg and Reichardt together for a conversation about their singular career trajectories, their distinctive approaches to writing and directing, and the process of translating personal experience into universally resonant stories of women on the verge of creative transcendence. NYFF60 Talks were presented by HBO. Joanna Hogg's The Eternal Daughter is now playing in our theaters. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/eternal

On this very special episode, cohost Veronica sits down with beloved critic Fran Hoepfner to talk highlights of the 60th New York Film Festival–of which Fran's omnibus review for BWDR is out now. In it, Fran describes the programming slate as offering, maybe, catharsis: “a healing that can only be done in a dark room, surrounded by others, but entirely viewed through your own eyes.” Listen as we break down what we saw with our own eyes, including: wanting to go on spooky vacation (Eternal Daughter), hot finger guns (Tár), getting fits off in Master Gardener, the good boring parts of Aftersun, “journalism” in square quotes (Stars at Noon), why Armageddon Time isn't Green Book, is Triangle of Sadness's Ruben Östlund performing ‘stupid guy who thinks he gets it,' Mark Rylance in crazy mode (Bones and All), Park Chan-wook's elastic worlds (Decision to Leave), the revolutionary humanist élan of All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, and a case for why Roxy audiences need to pee before the film starts. Plus, a guest appearance by our producer-editor Eli Sands on the Rohmerian sensibility of Showing Up.Find Fran online at her mag, Twitter, and Letterboxd. Original Air Date: Monday 12 September, 9 pm EasternDescription:This week, Dean and Phil pick up right where they left off … With Dean enjoying the weather in Michigan, Phil in COVID isolation in Los Angeles, and Robert Blake's Cinefantastique interview about David Lynch's Lost Highway providing the basis for a “cold open”. The themes of transition, embracing what wants to come forward, emotional intelligence and more get explored deeply in the wake of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal-themed discussion doesn't end there, as Pablo Lorrain's Princess Diana biopic Spencer goes under the microscope. That just starts the movie talk, though, as after raving about Joanna Hogg and her films The Souvenir and The Souvenir: Part II, Phil previews her new film, a mysterious ghost story, The Eternal Daughter, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Praise gets heaped upon filmmaker Steve McQueen and two of the films he made for his “Small Axe” series available on Prime: Mangrove and Lovers Rock. Finally, Dean and Phil wrap things up by analyzing three comic book movies (and the industry built on comic book movies): Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder, Daniel Espinosa's Morbius, and Baz Luhrmann's Elvis (NOT a comic book movie, you say? Just listen - you might change your mind!).

Best Girl Grip

Siobhán Harper-Ryan is a Hair & Make-Up Designer who started out as an apprentice in fashion design & millinery in London's Camden Lock, before exploring the world of theatre in the 90s where she found a place within London's Off West-End and the Fringe. In 1999 Siobhán changed course and trained in make-up artistry and has since enjoyed a varied & colourful career, working on a range of TV and film projects. Recently she worked on Sky Atlantic's series I Hate Suzie, as well as Joanna Hogg's films The Souvenir and The Souvenir Part II. The latter for which she just earned a BIFA nomination. She also worked on Joanna's next film The Eternal Daughter, and Peter Strickland's upcoming film Flux Gourmet.  This is my first time chatting to a make-up designer on Best Girl Grip, so as well as chatting about Siobhán's route into make-up artistry, we also go back to basics, discussing how she decides what make-up to use, what goes into creating onscreen looks, particularly for subtle period dramas like The Souvenir and how she establishes a rapport with the actors. We also talk about neurodivergence in the film industry, building confidence and taking time for yourself on the hubbub of a film set.  I hope you enjoy listening to our chat. Make sure to catch The Souvenir Part II when it's released in cinemas on 21st January next year. This is episode 96 of Best Girl Grip.
