Galatians 5:22-6:10 (especially 6:10 compared to James 1:27 and even 1Corinthians13 → Where it all lands!)Paul writes these conciliatory, comforting words in the context of a rebukingdiatribe to the churches of Galatia. They were receiving and listening to Judaizingbeliefs from Jerusalem. They were teaching his gentile converts that they needed to follow the law and be circumcised along with faith in Jesus to be saved. This was a call to arms for Paul and this letter mirrors his opposition to these ideas, especially for the gentiles. Paul emphasizes that it's not the law or circumcision that saves but only by faith in Christ (Galatians 3). He even rebuked Peter, who seemed intimidated by thesevisiting Judaizers (2:11-21). Paul was opposed to this message, and he expressed hi opposition to this message in very strong language. The author of 1 Corinthians 13pronounces curses and a coarse rebuke both against heretical angels (1:8-9) as well as Judiazers (5:12)All just prior to writing the beautiful words of Galatians 5:22-25 concerning the“Fruit of the Holy Spirit”. Was he speaking in the context of the fruit of the Spirit” when in prior chapters he issues such rebukes or is he reflecting on his own, “Acts of the flesh”(5:19-21)? I think Paul the very human Apostle of the Spirit was upset at what the damage these Judaizers were causing to their gentile brothers and sisters that he behaved confrontationally, urgently so he might mitigate the damage that would be done to the key message that would unite as one people, Jew and Gentile. And once he dealt with this hot issue he seems to calm himself down to a more “Fruit of the Spirit” inspired strategy that would unite and be conciliators to are body, both Jew and Gentile; In 6:1-10 illustrates some of how the Spirit inspired qualities would look like and what the central aim would be “to do good to all.”1) How to treat those entrapped in a sin: possibly one done against the teacher; 6:1:“People that are spiritual enough to restore sinners, are still possible sinners;”a) There cannot be any holier than thou Christians in Paul's view.2) To fulfill the central law of Christ (Galatians 5:22 & 6:2 “Love must help carryeach others overbearing burdens (see also Galatians 5:14)a) (Rather than trying to take the speck out of someone else's eye take thebeam out of our own eye (Matthew 7:5) follow Jesus's example in 1 Peter5:7, he accepts all our cares and anxieties, when you help someone withthe burdens, they cannot carry alone, ask yourself why are you or I doingit?3) Stay far away from relational pride: comparing, comparing, evaluating, constantlycomparing! Rather focus on self (It's our actions compared to God's word andSpirit (See the acts of the flesh 5:19-21)4) Learn to Lead by example and don't be lazy: teach others to be responsibleespecially in spiritual matters (note verse 5 is not equal to 6:2 which impliesburdens that come upon others like 6:1 that our brother and sister cannot carryalone. (See also 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 → comforting each other!)5) Be generous especially to your teachers, verse 6 (Again the fruit of the Spirit5:22-26) (See also 2 Corinthians 9:6-15)6) Reaping and sowing: We can never fool God (Verses 7-8) (or mock God like, forexample Ananias and Sapphira Acts 5:1-11. Note here the negative ordestructive effect doesn't come from God but “from the flesh” the positive effectsfrom the SpiritConclusionWarning that this will not be easy for human Christians: Verse 9, but the clearestevidence that we are keeping in step with the Spirit(5:26) is summarized in verse10: again not perfectly done but done with humility, honesty and hunger for God'sglory.Again read 6:9-10;

Ananias and Sapphira saw how Barnabas was praised for his generosity, and they wanted the recognition, too. They tried to lie to Peter and the church, but the Spirit cannot be deceived. By faking their generosity, they revealed that they did not have a proper fear of the Lord. Their deception cost them their lives. What about you? I was told that it's just talking about “respect”Respect God, like you respect a sweet old manGrampa GeneBut then I read verses like this:Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.(Gulp) This is not respecting a sweet old man!This is Jesus telling people to fear God. This is in opposition to someone who might say the fear of the Lord is just an Old Testament thing. I bring up this question because today we're covering Acts 4:32-5:11. It tells a terrifying story and then lands on this verse:Acts 5:11 (NLT) 11 Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else who heard what had happened.That's a BAD thing, right? Wrong. It's a good thing, and that's what we're going to be talking about today. Before we read it, let me ask you a question:Do you take God too seriously or too lightly? (put it on a spectrum)I think 99% of today's Christians take him too lightlyhe is just a sweet old grandpa figureToday's story will hopefully swing the pendulum back a bitNow let's get to the text…The Scary StoryActs 4:32-35 (NLT) 32 All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. 33 The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God's great blessing was upon them all. 34 There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them 35 and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.Another general description of the early churchMore than that… it's a setup for the two stories to follow…Acts 4:36-37 (NLT) 36 For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. 37 He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.There are lots of cool nicknames: “Air Jordan”, “The Rock”, “Billy the Kid”, but how cool would it be to have the nickname “Son of Encouragement".” Now that's a guy I want to hang around. Do you have some encouragers in your life? This is almost certainly the same Barnabus who shows up three more times in Acts (9:26-7; 11:22-6; 15:37)A positive example of generosity in the early church(Pillar New Testament Commentary) Although only a field was sold, ownership of land...

Talk 34 Mark 11:11-33 The ‘cleansing' of the Temple Welcome to Talk 34 in our series on Mark's Gospel. In this talk and the next we'll be looking at Mark 11:11-33. This passage contains two stories – the cursing of the fig tree and what is often referred to as the ‘cleansing' of the Temple (although I shall suggest that this is not the best description of what Jesus was doing). The fact that these stories are interwoven in the text and that they both happened within the same 24-hour period strongly suggests that they have a common theme.   As we shall see, it's possible to see both these events as two enacted parables announcing the termination of the temple as a place of worship and God's rejection of Israel because of his anger that they have rejected his Son, something which is backed up by the parable of the tenants which immediately follows in 12:1-12. Today we'll concentrate on the temple. Next time we'll consider why Jesus cursed the fig tree. But first, let's outline the story.   Verses 11-14. Jesus curses a fig tree because of its lack of fruit. Jesus and the apostles are staying in Bethany, possibly with Martha and Mary. On the way into Jerusalem Jesus is hungry and seeing a fig tree in leaf he goes to find out if there is any fruit on it. Finding nothing but leaves he says, May no one ever eat fruit from you again. And, jumping to verse 20, we see that the fig tree has withered from the roots. But first, we have verses 15-19.   Verses 15-19. Jesus cleanses the Temple. When he reaches Jerusalem, Jesus goes into the temple and drives out the people who are buying and selling there. He overturns the tables of the money changers and won't allow anyone to carry merchandise though the temple courts. He reminds them of what God has said in Isaiah 56:7 – My house will be a house of prayer for all nations – and, quoting Jeremiah 7:11, adds, But you have made it a den of robbers. This angers the Jewish religious leaders and they start to look for a way to kill him. In the evening Jesus returns to Bethany.   Verses 20-25. Jesus teaches a lesson on faith from the fig tree which has withered. The next day, as they're going back into Jerusalem Peter points out that the fig tree Jesus cursed is withered. Jesus replies:   Have faith in God, I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.   We'll be looking at this in more detail next time, so now verses 27-33.   Verses 27-33. Jesus is challenged by the Jewish leaders. They arrive back in Jerusalem and Jesus is confronted by the Jewish religious leaders who challenge him over what he has just done in the temple. By what authority had he done it? Jesus avoids answering their question but counters with another one. Was John's baptism of divine or of human origin? Realising that whatever answer they gave could lead them into criticism, they say, We don't know. So Jesus replies, Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.   So, having now outlined the passage, let's begin by considering the significance of Jesus' actions in the temple.   The significance of Jesus' actions in the temple To understand this fully we need to look back into the Old Testament. If you know your Bible well, you will know that there were in fact three temples built in Jerusalem: ·      Solomon's Temple, which was Israel's first temple ·      Zerubbabel's Temple, built to replace Solomon's Temple after its destruction by Nebuchadnezzar ·      Herod's Temple, the temple at the time of Jesus. However, the purpose for which the original temple was built remained the same, and we can learn much about this from Solomon's prayer of dedication in 1 Kings 8:12-61.   A place for God to dwell for ever (v13) Although Solomon's purpose was for the temple to be a place for God to dwell in, he knew that God couldn't be contained in a building, however magnificent it might be. Note what he says in verse 27: The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!   And in verse 30 he recognises that heaven is God's dwelling place: Hear the supplication of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven, your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive (cf. vv. 39,43, 45).   But what perhaps Solomon didn't understand was that God's ultimate plans were not for a physical temple made by men (Acts 7:48), but for a spiritual temple comprised of God's people themselves (1 Corinthians 3:16, 2 Corinthians 6:16, Ephesians 2:21-22, 1 Peter 2:4-10). More on this later.   A place for the Name of the Lord (vv. 17,18, 19, 20, 29,43,48) What does Solomon mean when he talks about building a temple for the Name of the Lord? In Bible times a name was not just a label, but something intended to represent the true nature of the person holding that name. The Name of the Lord has been defined as God himself, actively present, in the fulness of his revealed character.   And in the Psalms his name is linked with his righteousness, faithfulness, salvation, holiness, goodness, mercy, love, truth, and glory. If the temple was to be a place for God to dwell in, a place for the Name of the Lord, it must be a place that stood for and demonstrated all these divine qualities.   A place of prayer for all the peoples of the earth (vv. 28, 29, 30, 33, 38, 41-44, 48, 49) From the number of references to prayer in 1 Kings 8 it's clear that prayer was to be its primary purpose. Indeed, God himself was to say later through the prophet Isaiah:   My house will be a house of prayer for all nations (Isaiah 56:7).   Note that it was not only to be a house of prayer, but a house of prayer for all nations. This aspect of Solomon's purpose in building the original temple is expressed in his prayer that God would even answer the prayers of foreigners and do whatever they ask of him so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel… (vv41-43) and may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other (v. 60).   So Solomon's purposes in building the temple were that it should be:   A place for God to dwell in for ever A place for the Name of the Lord A place of prayer for all nations – a place where people might come to know the Lord.   But it's clear from Jesus' actions that these purposes were being frustrated by the Jewish people. Foreigners were treated with contempt and fleeced by the money changers. The qualities associated with the Name of the Lord were entirely absent. It was certainly not a fit dwelling place for God. And Jesus was right to be angry. Anger is not sin. It's right to be angry about sin.   But were these the only reasons for his actions? Was he really cleansing the temple? Or was he perhaps declaring by his actions that the time for the temple was about to come to an end? In Mark 13:2 he certainly predicted its destruction, something which was literally fulfilled in AD 70. Could this have been the significance of his cursing the fig tree? We'll come to that next time, but today let's consider how God's plans for the temple relate to Jesus himself, and then to his church.   Jesus as God's temple As we bear in mind God's original purposes for his temple, we see that these are wonderfully fulfilled in Jesus himself. If the characteristics of the divine nature were not being displayed in the temple as they should, they most certainly were in Jesus, in whom dwelt all the fulness of deity in bodily form (Colossians 2:10). Jesus embodied all that the Name of Yahweh stood for. He was God manifest in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16 KJV). Jesus himself was the true temple. If that sounds strange, bear in mind that in Matthew 12:6, referring to himself, Jesus said, In this place is one greater than the temple. He also referred to his own body as the temple (John 2:19-21).   All the purposes of the temple were fulfilled in the coming of Jesus. With his death, about to take place in less than a week, the temple was to become redundant, its veil torn in two from the top to the bottom. The middle wall, the barrier that separated the Gentiles from the Jews was destroyed (Ephesians 2:14). We need no longer look to the temple for the answer to our prayers. It's not in the temple, but in Jesus that we have the answer. Because of his sacrificial death on the cross, all who believe, both Jew and Gentile, have access to God through Jesus.   The church as God's temple Despite Solomon's prayer that the temple he had built would be God's dwelling place for ever, God himself never intended the temple in the Old Testament to be permanent. It was a prophetic symbol of Christ himself and of his church. Listen to what Paul says to the Corinthians. Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16).   And he tells the Ephesians that all who believe in him, whether Jew or Gentile, are:   Members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit (Ephesians 2:19-22).   And 1 Peter 2:4-10 describes Jesus as the living stone, rejected by men, but precious to him, and tells us that we too, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood. We are his chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation… we are now the people of God.   And 2 Corinthians 6:16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people."   What a privilege. We are the temple. But privilege always carries with it responsibility. We need to learn lessons from the mistakes God's people made of old. But let me first remind you of what we have said so far. I have suggested that, rather than cleansing the temple (i.e. making it fit for purpose), Jesus was actually expressing his anger at the way the temple had been defiled by the people of his day and that by his action in driving them out he was declaring an end to the temple which was shortly to be destroyed. It was no longer fit for purpose. It was no longer the dwelling place of God, no longer a place that represented all that his Father stood for, no longer a house of prayer for all nations where all the people of the world might come to know the Lord.   I have suggested that during his time here on earth the Lord Jesus himself was the true temple, the dwelling place of God, one who did represent and manifest all that the Father stood for, and that since his departure to heaven it is his purpose that the church, which is his body should fulfil the same role. The question is, are we? Or is it possible that we too are defiling God's temple?   Are we defiling God's temple, the church? Let's be clear. We're not talking about a church building. We're talking about the company of God's people, the church. Each of us needs to examine our heart on this matter, but it might help to call to mind some of the areas where some of the early Christians sometimes failed:   ·      Thinking of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5), are there times when we are not always strictly honest with each other? ·      Thinking of the Corinthians, are we defiling the temple by our divisions, especially over church leaders? ·      Are we sometimes guilty of failing to put the needs of others before our own as the Corinthians were at the Lord's Supper (1 Corinthians 11)? ·      Is there sexual immorality among us as there was with them (1 Corinthians 6)? ·      Are there idols in our lives (2 Corinthians 6:16)? If we really want our gatherings to be times where   ·      we experience God's holy presence ·      where the Name of the Lord and all that he stands for is honoured and exemplified ·      where we can expect our prayers to be answered ·      and where people of all nations may come to know the Lord let's examine our hearts and put right anything that might hinder the church from being the temple God intends it to be. In both Old and New Testaments there were serious consequences for defiling the Lord's temple. But, thank God, if we confess our sin, he is faithful and just, to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we really want it, our church can be just what God wants it to be. May it be so, for the sake of his Name.

Barnabas, Ananias and Sapphira - Acts 4-32-5-11-The early church had met the opposition of the world with prayer and humility. They were granted signs and wanders by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the name of the Lord Jesus Christ with boldness -vs.30,31-. Now, we see Satan working his evil not only from without, but now, from within. Luke, the inspired historian, gives us a study in contrast of the Holy Spirit working in the lives of believers and Satan working to disrupt and destroy that work.

But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” (Acts 5:3-4) Once I confronted a compulsive liar. Not to condemn him, nor to judge him, but to lovingly assure him that it was wholly unnecessary to lie about the thing he tried to conceal. But to no avail. Soon I found him lying about some inconsequential things on other occasions. The devil has been described as “the deceiver of the whole world” (Revelation 12:9). The modus operandi of the devil is to establish structures in the belief system of a person, family and human society, wherefrom he works out his scheme of enslaving and separating man from God and everything godly. For Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11): The underlying cause and source of their deception were identified—Satan had filled their heart to lie to The Holy Spirit. The story's lesson applies to any deceptive act. Deception in anything, even small things, is partnership with spiritual forces of deception. It's the way Satan, who is the author of all deception, enters the human heart, then settles in to establish a pattern. Ultimately, when resistance is completely breached, when the heart has been opened to deception, Satan subtly builds a darkened hiding place where capacity to deceive others develops and a spiritual gateway for further deception is created. The opening is a spiritual door, but not spiritual in a good sense. To partner with deception is never a good business idea—not savvy or clever in any sense! All forms and levels of deception work against the will of God and never carry His blessing. Furthermore, once deception's door opens, more deception follows—more deceiving others, and more being deceived by Satan to continue the destructive process. For those willing—those who personally choose—to live honestly while also championing deliverance for anyone snared by deceit, God's Word instructs us—“Every Scripture has been written by the Holy Spirit, the breath of God. It will empower you by its instruction and correction, giving you the strength to take the right direction and lead you deeper into the path of godliness” (2 Timothy 3:16, The Passion Translation). (Extract from Shirley Weaver's Devotional “Deceptive anything”) The Holy Spirit will not only deliver us from the deceptive scheme of the devil, He is able to dismantle the deception structure in us! Prayer Focus Ask the Lord to expose every deception and lie of Satan still affecting your belief system today – those from unpleasant and painful past, our cultural root, the society from the world. Renounce and reject them. Speak and embrace the truth of God as revealed in the Scriptures in place of those lies you have rejected and renounced.

Today, Monday September 6 Are You Pretending? 1 John 4:20-21 “If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.” Are you pretending to be someone or something you are not? For the seventh time in this epistle we read, "If anyone says...!" We have already met this important phrase several times, and each time we knew what was coming: a warning against pretending. Fear and pretense usually go together. In fact, they were born together when the first man and woman sinned. No sooner did Adam and Eve sense their guilt than they tried to hide from God and cover their nakedness. But neither their coverings nor their excuses could shelter them from God's all-seeing eye. Adam finally had to admit, "I heard Thy voice in the Garden, and I was afraid" (Genesis 3:10). But when our hearts are confident toward God, there is no need for us to pretend, either to God or to other people. When we lack confidence with God, we will also lack confidence with God's people. Part of the torment that fear generates is the constant worry, "How much do others really know about me?" or “What are others thinking about me?” But when we have confidence with God, this fear is gone and we can face both God and men without worry. Perhaps the best example of this sin is seen in the experience of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5). They sold a piece of property and brought part of the money to the Lord, but they gave the impression that they were bringing all the money. The sin of this couple was not in taking money from God, for Peter made it clear that the disposal of the money was up to them (Acts 5:4). Their sin was hypocrisy. They were trying to make people think they were more generous and spiritual than they really were. Pretending is one of the favorite activities of little children, but it is certainly not a mark of maturity in adults. Adults must know themselves and be themselves, fulfilling the purposes for which Christ saved them. Their lives must be marked by honesty. When we are growing and maturing in our love and knowledge of God we will be honest with God, with ourselves and with others. We will not have to pretend! Spiritual honesty brings peace and power to our lives when we practice it. We will not have to keep a record of the lies we have told, and we not be using up our energy to cover up. Because we live in open honesty with our heavenly Father, we can live in honesty with other people. Love and truth go together. Because we knows God loves us and accepts us (even with all our faults), we do not have to try to impress others. We loves God, and therefore we love our fellow brothers in Christ. Confidence toward God and honesty with others are two marks of maturity that are bound to show up when our love for God is being perfected. Today, by the grace of God, we can experience and enjoy the reality of the love of God in our lives and we can just be ourselves without fear and worry! We don't have to pretend!!!! God bless!

In this message, Pastor Jamie Nunnally invites us to learn from the stories of Ananias and Sapphira. Acts 4:32-37 “All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. 33 The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God's great blessing was upon them all. 34 There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them 35 and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need...." Spontaneous giving and sharing has broken out among the church. They willingly shared everything and made sure there was no lack. Enter Ananias and Sapphira…Acts 5:1-11 “But there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property. 2 He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife's consent, he kept the rest. 3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. 4 The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren't lying to us but to God!...” Takeaways:1. Scripture doesn't say who killed Ananias and Sapphira. John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”Acts 10:38 “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.Matthew 5:44-45 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.Don't create theology from verses that are exceptions.  2. Ananias and Sapphira were most likely imposters sent to infiltrate the Christian community.Acts 5:12-14 “Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. 13 None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. 14 And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women.”Verse 4 said Satan had filled their hearts and V9 says they conspired together.  3. Forced sharing is not biblical.Marxism, Communism, and socialism are making an ideological comeback in this country and its proponents often try to use scripture to justify it.Acts 5:4 “The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away.”Scripture upholds land ownership, property rights and the right to do with one's possessions and money as they wish. 2 Corinthians 9:7 “You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don't give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” “The transformation of charity into legal entitlement has produced donors without love and recipients without gratitude.” - SCOTUS Justice Scalia What's your story?

And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” 5 When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. 6 The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. 7 After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” 9 But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things. ------------------ 5 Core Values of SWAT 1. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth." 1:12-14 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. When they had come in, they went up into the upper room, where they were staying; that is Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord continued steadfastly in prayer and supplication, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. Acts 2:1-2  Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place.   Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. As we saw last time, Jesus has ascended back to the right hand of the Father.  The 12 apostles are now back in Jerusalem and waiting.  Waiting for the Holy Spirit to come.  The Holy Spirit who indwells members of the early church.  The Holy Spirit who empowers and transforms them!  Remember Peter? Remember how just a few days earlier he had rejected Jesus Christ and openly defied Him by trying to stop Jesus going to the cross.  This Peter who was dejected and defeated.  In the early chapters of Acts, we see the disciples transformed.  Lets concentrate on Peter for a good example of this.  This is now a new Peter, transformed by the indwelling Holy Spirit, who speaks with the authority Jesus gave the disciples. This Peter, given impetus by the Holy Spirit, who preaches a sermon and 3000 people are added to the church in one day (Acts 2v41). This Peter, who when passing by a man who couldn't walk, told him to get up and walk - and he did (Acts 3v1-11)!  Peter was allowing himself to be controlled by the Holy Spirit and doing some of the things that were synonymous with Jesus' earthly ministry.    What is the difference between this Peter and the Peter before Jesus' resurrection?  It was only the Holy Spirit and the difference He makes to Peter.  Peter, by submitting himself to the authority and power of the Holy Spirit, was allowing the Holy Spirit to control him and guide him.  This Peter, who we know from the Gospel accounts, had no self-control, yet now had self-control because he submitted to the Holy Spirit.  The greatest evidence of the Holy Spirit living inside any of us, is the transformation of the individual into the image of Jesus - as demonstrated here in Peter. This Peter who not only allowed the Holy Spirit's power to heal people but also administered church discipline as in the case of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5v10).  But it wasn't just Peter who was empowered.  As Acts 5v12-16 shows us, all the disciples, not just the twelve apostles, filled and controlled by the Holy Spirit, were able to do healings and other signs and wonders.  The Holy Spirit, living inside and empowering all believers for service of Jesus Christ, not just the 12 apostles. All of this power delivers their passion for Jesus Christ and making Him, and Him alone, known.  The early church was dynamic and seen to be exercising the authority of Jesus Christ.  This was done by preaching the good news about him being the long waited for Messiah.  Exercising His authority, by submitting themselves to Him and relying totally on the Holy Spirit alone. This power and passion however, had a cost.  The early church endured persecution from the Jewish authorities, keen to exercise authoritarian rule.  The early church persecuted for being Christian and preaching Jesus as the Messiah.  What was the result of this persecution?  Did persecution stop the church growing?  That is for next time!   In preparation for that, you might like to read Acts 7 & 8. So finally, remember this.  The greatest evidence for the power of the Holy Spirit is not by way of signs and wonders and healings or tongues or other miracles.  The greatest evidence that you have the Holy Spirit living inside you, controlling you and of you being submitted to Him is your being continually transformed into the very image of Jesus Christ.  Transformed by allowing yourself to be so intimate with Jesus Christ that people will notice you have changed and will ask you why!  Being filled with the Spirit, is allowing yourself to be continually controlled by Him and exercising His will, power and authority.  That is one of the reasons the early church grew phenomenally and why the church is still here 2000 years later.  The Pharisees and Sadducees are long gone.  The Roman Empire collapsed. But... But... But... Jesus' church still stands, is still growing, and will one day be joined with Jesus in eternity, to the praise, honour and glory of Him who will return! Thank you. With one accord: This is a phrase frequently used by Luke in Acts I have felt the Lord drawing me to it as a result of the recent emphasis on prayer and unity. Just a few examples: Acts 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer Acts 2:1 ...they were all with one accord in one place. Acts 2:45 ...continuing daily with one accord in the temple, Acts 4:24 ...they lifted up their voice to God with one accord The Greek word is homothumadon NIV translates it as ‘together’ but this does not do justice to the Greek It literally means with the same mind or with one purpose So ‘with one accord’ (KJV) is better on this than NIV. So I’m using KJV Why is this important? Because it seriously affects what we can learn from these passages Together is related to PLACE. If homothumadon just meant together Luke would not have needed to say ‘in one place’ With one accord is related to PURPOSE Let’s look at some of the passages where it’s used and see what we can learn about: The ways in which the early Christians were ‘with one accord’ The reasons why the early Christians were ‘with one accord’ What happened as a result The ways in which the early Christians were ‘with one accord’ They were with one accord in prayer Acts 1:14 “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.” Acts 4:24 “And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:” These all continued with one accord (1:14) Continue Greek: proskartereō KJV Translates this verb as: continue, continue steadfastly, attend continually, give oneself continually, wait on, wait on continually They stuck at it. They didn’t give up. …they lifted up their voice to God with one accord (4:24) They cared They were with one accord in one place Acts 2:1 “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.” Acts 2:45 ...continuing daily with one accord in the temple Acts 4:23-24 And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord... Acts 5:12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch Note the importance of being together Hebrews 10:25 They were with one accord with one purpose Homothumadon means with one purpose They were not just together in one place They were together with one purpose. Acts 2:42-47 (note again the emphasis on continuing) “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship (koinonia) and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” Doctrine (learning and putting into practice) Fellowship (koinonia - sharing) (By contrast: Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5)) Breaking bread Prayer The reasons why the early Christians were ‘with one accord’ Jesus’ command Acts 1:4-5 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, you have heard of me. Consequence 02 Holy Spirit Comes! ~ ~Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. ~ As we saw last time, Jesus has ascended back to the right hand of the Father. The 12 apostles are now back in Jerusalem and waiting. Waiting for the Holy Spirit to come and baptize, fill, empower, indwell and transform. Before Jesus went to the cross, He told his disciples a number of times that He was going back to the Father, that He would not leave them alone and powerless because the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, would be sent. The Holy Spirit would live in, empower and motivate the disciples. He would also remind them of all Jesus had taught them. ~ Throughout the Book of Acts and in the other New Testament writings we discover more about the Holy Spirit. We see that His prime role is to see Jesus Christ the Son of God praised and glorified (John 16:13-14) by testifying for Jesus Christ (John 15:26) and witnessing for Him (Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit is involved with ministering to members of the church. The Holy Spirit declares God’s Word, interpreting and illuminating it. He convicts of sin, transforms, indwells, fills, baptizes and seals the believer. With all this, the Holy Spirit also equips for service. God is at work in His body the church, to will and to act accordingly to his purpose (Phil. 2:13), to be my witnesses (Acts 1:8). ~ Let’s look at the Holy Spirit at work, concentrating on His work in the life of Peter! Remember how Peter had rejected Jesus Christ and openly defied Him by trying to stop Jesus going to the cross. That Peter was a dejected and defeated man. There is now a new Peter! A new Peter, transformed by the Holy Spirit! A Peter who speaks with the authority Jesus gave all the disciples. This Peter, given impetus by the Holy Spirit, preaches a sermon and 3000 people are added to the church in one day (Acts 2:41). This Peter, who when passing by a man who couldn’t walk, told him to get up and walk – and the man did (Acts 3:1-11)! Peter was allowing himself to be guided and controlled by the Holy Spirit. The difference between this Peter and the dejected Peter before Jesus’ resurrection is due only to the Holy Spirit making a difference to Peter. Peter, by submitting himself to the authority and power of the Holy Spirit, was allowing the Holy Spirit to control him and guide him. The greatest evidence of the Holy Spirit living inside any of us, is the transformation of the individual into the image of Jesus – as demonstrated here in Peter. ~ This Peter who under the influence of Holy Spirit’s power, administered church discipline as in the case of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:10). But it wasn’t just Peter who was empowered. As Acts 5:12-16 shows us, all the disciples, not just the twelve apostles, were able to do all manner of things for the glory of Jesus Christ because they were baptized and controlled by the Holy Spirit. ~ The Holy Spirit empowers and delivers the disciples passion for making Jesus Christ known. The early church was dynamic and seen to be exercising the authority of Jesus Christ. This was done by preaching the good news about Jesus being the long waited for Messiah. The Disciples exercised Jesus’ authority by submitting themselves to and relying upon the Holy Spirit. Would that be for the church of the 21st century! The Holy Spirit, lives inside and empowering all believers for the service and glory of Jesus Christ! Not just the 12 apostles for the service of Jesus Christ. Next time in this series Consequences we will look at where the early disciples were told to go and teach! ~ Right Mouse click or tap here to listen/save this as an audio mp3 file You can now purchase our Partakers books! I think we’ve all heard it before “Christians are just a bunch of hypocrites” People expect a certain standard of living and behavior from Christians and when they don’t see it, the word Hypocrite is immediately assigned. Since Christians are not perfect, how do we avoid being a hypocrite? How do we prove faithful when we still sin? Become a SPF Podcast Teammate! I LOVE the Natural Radiance Mask - it smells amazing and leaves my skin feeling so soft. https://www.ajapothecary.com/product/natural-radiance-mask/ Christians can be Hypocrites Greek Word - hypokritēs means actor/pretender Two ways we can be hypocrites as Christians: we can know the truth and do something different (Example: Paul confronting Peter in Galatians) we can act out what we know is right but our hearts are far from worshipping God (Example: Jesus rebuking the Pharisees and scribes in Matthew 23) Bottom line - as Christiasn we are new creations with a new heart able to live lives to God. If our hearts are new, we live according to the newness. So anytime we sin, we are actually being hypocrites. We are living according to the flesh instead of according to the spirit.  What do we do when we still sin? We repent and believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We turn from evil, because we can through the power of Christ. We live out 1 John 1:9 - When we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to cleanse of our sins and forgive us of all unrighteousness.  Turning from hypocrisy does these things: Glorifies God assures us of our salvation shows the world God's authority, holiness, and forgiveness to sinners When confronted with hypocrisy in our lives remember this verse: God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. James 4:6 Two ways to respond: pride vs humility Pride: Annanais and Sapphira Acts 5 Humility: Israel and Samual 1 Samuel 12 Practical humility in 1 Samuel: Fear only God Serve Him faithfully with all your heart Consider the great things He has done for you (in Bible, and in own life) Three Ways We Can Prove Faithful by Turning from our Hypocrisy 1. Turn from evil and obey the Lord 2. Think like a Christian by developing a biblical worldview 3. For the church in the Middle East today, persecution is not ancient history, but everyday reality. And while we take seriously the external threats the church faces (and while we desperately pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters), there is one threat that is even more dangerous for the church in general (and for Munger Place Church specifically), than persecution and terrorism: the most dangerous threat we face is the danger from falsehood and deceit.
