Les années 1975-1995 - Spirals in the Harmonic and Formal Structure of RéponsSession 3 : Spirales, dérives, fragments : le style compositionnel des années 1980Intervenant :Catherine LosadaProfessor of Music Theory, University of CincinnattiColloque organisé pour le centenaire de la naissance de Pierre Boulez par le Pr Pierre-Michel Menger, chaire Sociologie du travail créateur, et Nicolas Donin, professeur de musicologie à l'université de Genève.Avec le soutien de la Fondation du Collège de France et de son grand mécène LVMH.RésuméA landmark work, Pierre Boulez's Répons (1980-82) was written to showcase the technological potential of IRCAM, the Parisian Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music that Boulez founded in 1977. This piece, like many others, was considered a work-in-progress at the time of the composer's death in 2016. Existing associated scholarship for the most part builds on Boulez's commentary, which encompasses the five chords that generate the first two sections of the work and the concept of a spiral. On the aesthetic level, the spiral clearly illustrates the idea of a constantly evolving, unfinished work (DiPietro 2000), but Boulez's explanation of how it applies to the musical materials is somewhat vague "Répons is a set of variations in which the material is arranged is such a way that it revolves around itself" (Derrien 1988). In this paper, I will show how the model of a spiral is essential to the conception of this piece in two additional ways, one at a technical, pitch generation level, the other a larger formal level. In this way, I will elucidate interesting aspects of the harmonic structure of the piece, its overall form, and their relationship to Boulez's broader aesthetic outlook. The third version of Répons (1984) consists of an introduction, eight sections and a coda. An early version of the piece (1981) ended after the fourth section. My paper will comment on the evolving quality of Boulez's works by examining the relationship between section four and the immediately ensuing section—added in the following version (1982) (Jameux, 1989). The material for both sections is based on a chord that presents the SACHER hexagram in a precise registral disposition. Common to many of Boulez's later works, the use of this hexagram constitutes an homage to Boulez's benefactor, Paul Sacher. Although several sources note the importance of the hexagram for this piece, none explain its precise function. Boulez uses this chord as a basis for a fascinating technique (Example 1) that is related to, but distinct from techniques he used previously in his career, a spiral-like adaptation of a rotational array. The spiraling process creates precise registral invariances illustrated by the fixed boundary pitches and the arrows shown on the sketch. I will show how the array generates the instrumental material (discussed in Williams 1994, Tissier 2011) as well as the superimposed recorded material (the "wallpaper") for section four. Significantly, the material for the fifth section is based on a retrograde reworking of this material. This is the essence behind the formal concept of a spiral: a new, intensified cycling through materials that are related at a deep level. Finally, I will show how Boulez's application of this array creates a background pitch organization with a flexibility that successfully addresses the main challenge he sought to resolve in this piece: that of maintaining the vitality of live performance in a work that includes recorded materials (Boulez 1985). This was one of the most striking and influential aspects of this work.RéférencesBoulez, Pierre. 1985. "Pierre Boulez: Über Répons: ein Interview mit Josef Häusler." InTeilton. FIDF Chief Executive Officer Steve Weil welcomes back Rocket Scientist Ari Sacher to help us understand the current threat of missiles fired into Israel by the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Ari explains that the Houthis are an Iranian proxy, and so they have access to state of the art technology provided to them by Iran, including advanced long range missiles and firing systems. Israel has successfully taken out a vast majority of the missile barrages, using Israel's Arrow-3 missile defense system. However, a missile did hit the ground on Ben Gurion Airport, but no major damage or casualties were incurred. Ari believes that the Houthis, residents of neaerly unlivable third world conditions, are an enemy with nothing to lose, and so no matter how we hit them, they will keep coming. The key is to cut the Houthis off from acquiring weapons from their sources. Ultimately, Ari believes that the only solution to the threat of the Houthis is a political one. Mary Norine Walsh, MD, MACC, JACC: Case Reports Deputy Editor, is joined by author Alexander C Sacher, DO, discussing this study from Sacher et al presented at ACC.25 and published in JACC: Case Reports. Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is known for thrombotic events and pregnancy complications, but its association with myocarditis is rare and poorly understood. In this case, a 44-year-old female presented with acute chest tightness, elevated cardiac biomarkers, and severe anemia. Diagnostic workup revealed ST-segment changes on ECG, preserved left ventricular function on echocardiography, and myocardial inflammation on cardiac MRI, suggestive of acute myocarditis. Positive antiphospholipid antibodies confirmed APS. She was managed with close multidisciplinary follow up. This case highlights the role of cardiac MRI in diagnosing myocarditis early, guiding management strategies, and the need for heightened clinical suspicion in APS patients presenting with cardiac symptoms.

FIDF Chief Executive Officer Steve Weil welcomes back Ari Sacher, rocket scientist for RAFAEL, to discuss the current state of Israel's multi-front war. Ari explains that, militarily, the combat has significantly dissipated. Ari also goes into details regarding Israel's response to Iran's ballistic missile attack that occurred months ago, explaining that Israel set back Iran's ballistic missile production capabilities immensely via a successful airstrike. Ari also explains Israel's capability to defend against Iran were they to decide to launch their missiles stockpile at Israel, and against Hezbollah's Almas missiles. Israel has done a stellar job defending against both of those threats, and has pushed Hezbollah above the Litani river. While the IDF has responded successfully to the war, over 70% of Israelis disapprove of the recent ceasefire deal with Hamas, and it is likely, according to Ari's estimation, that the war with Hamas will resume.Donate NOW at FIDF.org for the fastest and most direct way to give IDF Soldiers what they need most. 100% of your contribution will go to meet their emergency humanitarian needs.

Dr. Sacher, the lead scientist behind the development of the groundbreaking Iron Dome missile defense system, explains that while the Iron Dome's 90-95% success rate is remarkable and indispensable, it isn't perfect. He witnessed firsthand the carnage of a Hezbollah rocket that made it past the Iron Dome, which landed near his home. Steven and Dr. Sacher discuss two of the IDF's most pressing current objectives, which is to target and destroy Hezbollah's missile launchers in Beirut via precision airstrikes, and to push the Hezbollah terrorists behind the Litani River, which would act as a natural border wall that would prevent Hezbollah from executing an attack similar to October 7th. Hlavné mesto monarchie podľa Zweiga, v tom čase jedného z najznámejších európskych spisovateľov, „harmonizovalo, všetky národné a jazykové protiklady a jej kultúra bola syntézou všetkých západných kultúr“. V aktuálnom podcaste sa na kultúrny život Viedne pozrieme trochu netradične: cez príbeh Hotela Sacher, hotela, ktorý bol jedným z centier spoločenského života mesta. Stretávali sa tu maliari Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele či Oskar Kokoschka, spisovatelia Hugo von Hofmannsthal a Felix Salten či skladatelia Gustav Mahler a Arnold Schönberg. Ale takisto významní politici a štátnici. Možno príbeh Hotela Sacher a rodiny Sacherovcov vnímať ako mikrohistóriu Viedne a monarchie v turbulentných časoch na prelome storočí, v časoch prvej svetovej vojny a v predvečer tej druhej? Ako sa Hotel Sacher stal kultúrnym centrom Viedne? Čím žili kultúrne a ekonomické elity hlavného mesta? A akú úlohu v tom celom zohráva rodina Sacherovcov a ich slávna sacherka? Aj na tieto otázky budeme hľadať odpoveď v nasledujúcich minútach. For the first bonus battle of the year, we've picked two comedies that have a lot in common. The most obvious similarity is that they are both directed and co-written by Mel Brooks. They also both star Gene Wilder, and they are both parodies of genres that we have done bonus battle specials on last year. What a time to be alive!
