Otto Scharmer - Systems Thinking: Addressing Global Divides and Collective Action

Reboot Business

"Reboot Business" podcast host Julian Devaureix interviews Otto Scharmer, a senior lecturer at MIT and creator of Theory U, about navigating the current radical transformation of the business world due to social, energy, and environmental demands. Scharmer discusses systems thinking as a way to understand interconnected global crises like ecological damage, socioeconomic inequality, and mental health issues, emphasizing that these are symptoms of deeper disconnects. He introduces Theory U as a framework and set of tools for achieving organizational and societal change by shifting consciousness and enabling systems to see and sense themselves more fully. The conversation highlights the power of attention as crucial for individuals and leaders to intentionally shape the future and move from reactive patterns to co-creative action, advocating for personal awareness practices, deep listening in small groups, and aligning work with purpose to foster widespread change starting at the individual level.Hosted by Ausha. Only then can we integrate the past, and not be unconsciously driven by it. Only then can we hear the calling of the future, and act courageously towards something different. In the book ‘The Essentials of Theory U', Otto Scharmer asks the simple but unique question, “How do we learn from the future as it emerges?” Telling a story from his childhood, Scharmer recalled the moment in which he discovered his parents' house had burnt down. It was then when he realized that it was not only his physical possessions that were lost but also his experiences and attachments to the home. His old self had died, so his survival relied on the life that lay ahead.  In this episode, I will review and share with you a recent reading of Otto Scharmers' book ‘The Essentials of Theory U' (2018). I begin with a summary of the author and the book's main ideas. From there, I intend to highlight the concept of the ‘blind spot' and how the process-oriented ‘Theory U' finds a creative solution to managing current global, social, and economic challenges. Last, but by no means least, we will draw conclusions for implementing this concept in leadership roles within social work organisations. For more information visit my blog: profmanagement.de Thank you for listening. Antoinette Klatzky -- A Feminine Voice From the Emerging Future: Transforming Business, Environment and Leadership

“We are stronger than we realize.  We have the immense capacity for resilience -- to rise up and recreate the world we know is possible.” When Antoinette Klatzky took a part-time job as a recent college graduate in a retail clothing store, she might not have imagined one day working with the iconic fashion designer, Eileen Fisher, to help set strategy for Fisher’s foundation on human rights and climate justice for the next 10 years -- operating at the intersection of transforming business, environmental stewardship, and women’s empowerment. Nor might she have envisioned that her work with Fisher would lead her to help prepare leaders and changemakers around the globe for broader awareness-based systems change. But that’s what Klatzky has done. As the co-creator and Executive Director of the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute, she facilitates empowerment workshops for young women – having previously initiated a recycled clothing program to fund those workshops and helped diversify the company’s supply chain for social justice and equity. And as a co-creator in the Presencing Institute, led by Otto Scharmer of MIT, she co-anchors a worldwide community of nearly 13,000 participants engaging in shared inquiry: how can we be of transformational service in our modern moment of intersecting crises? The daughter of a consciously single parent, Klatzky comes from a strong line of independent women. Her mother, after leaving a secure academic tenured career, gave birth to her at the age of 40 as a single parent by choice. Her grandmother, who gave birth to her mother at the age of 40, was the daughter of a Russian Jewish seamstress who fled the pogroms of Czarist Russia. “It’s this lineage of strong women that carried me into this life and to the journey that I have been on,” Klatzky reflects. Her father’s Indian heritage was a doorway of discovery for universal roots, blending community and family, and deepening into spiritual and embodiment practices like yoga, of which she is a certified teacher. The paradoxical sense of both belonging and difference that she experienced in her childhood within the Jewish community led her to an International Honors Program in college, where she traveled across countries, experienced different cultures, and re-imagined globalization. Upon graduating, she returned to her childhood stomping grounds at the YWCA where she was previously a lifeguard competitive swimming coach – this time to step in as a social justice coordinator, while also taking a part-time job in retail clothing. This would foreshadow the next stage of her life. As it turned out, Eileen Fisher was looking to establish an institute to teach the company’s leadership practices to a new generation of young women and teenage girls. Klatzky seemed the ideal fit. The company’s leadership practices were heavily influenced by Otto Scharmer’s work at MIT, taking Klatzky deep into the principles of Theory U, a paradigm for awareness-based systems change and organizational transformation that emphasizes deep listening, and radically sensing and “presencing” an emerging future. She was so drawn to these principles that she studied and trained with Scharmer’s Presencing Institute, and later joined its board. A moment that occurred during a Master Class in Germany captures Klatzky’s depth of spirit: in a circle discussing the aftermath of the Holocaust, she spontaneously and melodiously sang a Hebrew prayer. Much of the room was brought to tears.  Out of Klatzky's explorations, the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute was born.  Beyond simply imparting useful skills, the program distinctively helps young women embark on a leadership journey of self-discovery -- and the authenticity that comes with embodiment.  Today, Klatzky divides her time at work between the Leadership Institute and Women Together, an initiative of the Eileen Fisher Foundation that supports women in being the change they wish to see in the world.  She also co-anchors the GAIA Journey (Global Activation of Intention and Action), a 14-week online course that she co-developed for the Presencing Institute aimed at profound civilizational renewal. Within the span of 12 days in response to the Covid pandemic, GAIA grew from a small group of friends discussing an idea to 13,000 virtual journeys supported by insights from neuroscientists, indigenous wisdom keepers, psychotherapists, biologists, artists, poets, and academic researchers. Klatzky is still processing all that has transpired. What keeps her grounded? She lives just north of New York City on Lenape land, and loves her time in the garden, connected to the land. What she calls “home” is her regular yoga and meditation practice. “When I can really come back to myself and be centered in who I am, that is home for me.” Join us in conversation with this strong feminine voice of the emerging future!

Marianne Williamson’s 2020 Vision – The Evolution Is Here … If We Want ItAired Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST Interview with Author, Teacher and Presidential Candidate Marianne Williamson“If we want to heal the cancer on the body politic, we must first address the heart disease.” — Swami BeyondanandaFour years ago, rank and file Republican voters had the courage to follow their convictions and choose an outside-the-box, non-politician candidate who they felt best represented their world view. Establishment candidates like Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, and even Ted Cruz fell by the wayside, and the Republican establishment had to fall in line behind the people’s choice, Donald Trump. As MIT professor Otto Scharmer (http://mitsloanexperts.mit.edu/on-the-making-of-trump-the-blind-spot-that-created-him-otto-scharmer/) pointed out after the election, American voters had three choices in 2016: Move forward together, stay with the status quo, or move backward. Bernie represented moving forward together, but there is plenty of evidence that he was cheated out of the nomination (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jun/11/democrat-primary-elections-need-reform) by the Hillary forces. Hillary, according to Scharmer, represented the status quo.And we all know what happened. The status quo was rejected, and America took a giant step backward. Now, here we are again, and the powers-that-be in the Democratic (sic) Party have been using their influence to marginalize and discredit the one truly “radical” candidate in the campaign, Marianne Williamson. Now by radical, I don’t mean Bernie Sanders radical or even AOC radical – I mean radical in its original meaning, getting to the root cause. Unlike any other candidate, with the possible exception of Tulsi Gabbard, Marianne’s platform – go here (https://www.marianne2020.com/) to see it for yourself – is the only one that gets to the ROOT of the “shituation”, the absence of a sane and sacred center. Consequently, the unchecked and unbalanced power of money has ruled, leaving we the people at the non-mercy of a heartless system. And while I have always liked and admired Marianne, it wasn’t until I saw her in the second Presidential debate last summer that I appreciated the power of her voice being heard. She received genuine and heartfelt applause when she broke through fog of political clichés and challenged the Democratic Party not just to provide universal health care but to get to the root of what has been making us sick – industries putting toxins in the air, water and food, depleted soil, and a toxic economic environment where 40% of us live from paycheck to paycheck, all too often without the paycheck.I originally envisioned this interview with Marianne as a way for her to present her platform as a vision for the coming decade that should inform the Democratic platform regardless of the candidate. Instead, she issued a challenge: If Republican voters had the courage and political will to support someone who spoke to their true agenda, how about progressives? Will progressives take up the challenge to move ahead – or fall back into some “safe” candidate who might or might not be able to defeat Donald Trump? And if by some stroke of grace, that “cancer” is excised, how about the underlying heart disease?Half a century ago, John Lennon offered a similar challenge (https://youtu.be/CbKsgaXQy2k)“War is over … if you want it.” Now the evolution is here … if we want it. Will we settle for a lesser evil … or stand for a greater good? If we have the courage and will and yes, faith to stand together we may never need to march again. If you’ve written off Marianne Williamson as “unelectable” or if you are still undecided, go read her platform and see the depth of her ideas. More importantly, understand she will stand behind those ideas. Remember, Donald Trump was also “unelectable” … and if a miracle is indeed needed, who better to bring it about than a Course In Miracles teacher? Decide for yourself.

So this episode is a talk I gave on a beautiful farm called Mossy Willow Farm last weekend. The event and the talk were organised by Dumbo Feather and I thank them so much for the opportunity - I had myself a lovely time and the talk led to some awesome conversations afterward. During the talk I paraphrase this quote from Peter Senge: It's common to say that trees come from seeds. But how can a tiny seed create a huge tree? Seeds do not contain the resources need to grow a tree. These must come from the medium or environment within which the tree grows. But the seed does provide something that is crucial : a place where the whole of the tree starts to form. As resources such as water and nutrients are drawn in, the seed organizes the process that generates growth. In a sense, the seed is a gateway through which the future possibility of the living tree emerges.Peter Senge, C. Social networks are regarded as powerful resources that have available novel solutions, innovative ideas and can create new pathways. Networks exist as informal webs of affiliation between individuals and also as ties between organisations in the form of professional networks. These different forms of networks have in common that there is a social structure that connects particular agents with each other and enables the flow of information and knowledge between them. Thus, in creating new ties and connecting already existing networks/individuals/organisations, a richer structure is created and with it access options to novel knowledge. The exchange and combination of knowledge is a means for creating innovations. The national initiative “Learning Regions – Providing Support for Networks” (2001-2008) fostered this macro-structural change process in Germany on a regional level, so that a new learning culture and with it innovative products and ideas could emerge. An underlying concept for this programme is the theory on ‘learning organisations’ (Senge et al. 2007) which is referred to concerning the interpretation of the data. Moreover, in order also to focus on the associated change processes, the guiding theoretical elaborations of Scharmer’s “Theory U” are applied to the findings. In this thesis the data gathered during the evaluation of this initiative are re-analysed with the research focus on particular social role inhabitants in networks: network managers. Based on a combination of survey and network data as well as expert interviews, the structural position and the resulting perspectives, perceptions and role learning processes are explored. By means of interpreting the findings, the thesis illustrates a developmental role-taking process for network managers with five stages along a U-curve. Thus, it becomes evident that the above described structural changes of interaction and knowledge flows are accompanied by deep change and the acquisition of certain skills. These skills are identified for example as a high tolerance for complexity and uncertainty, a “bridging capacity”, an awareness of tie structures, a high level of personal mastery and the capacity to act skilfully in interdependent structures and perceive himself or herself as part of a larger system. Network management is recognized as a service function that needs to be filled in professional educational networks. In the networks of the learning regions, network managers are inclined to act as societal change agents and social entrepreneurs who try to induce a process of conscious co-evolution within a defined region.
