I am so excited to introduce you today to a woman who will change the world for the better—and already is. Today on the show we have the dynamic Kathleen Griffith, whose book Build Like a Woman: The Blueprint for Creating a Business and Life You Love, came out on June 4 and, I am happy to tell you, is already a bestseller. Kathleen opens the book by writing that “This book is for every woman who is done and ready,” and talks about building a business and a life through the lens and framework of architecture and construction and building—think a demolition, a punchlist, a crew. This book is definitely for founders and entrepreneurs and those starting a business, but it's also for those, like me for example, who may not be starting a business—yet, anyway—but who have ideas and who want to illuminate both their careers and their lives. As Kathleen puts it, “It will be painful, but it will be every bit worth it” as we construct the careers and lives of our dreams. The book champions the concept of a “total life” and in it we learn about an integrated life layout, where we can make a difference both at work and at home, and, though work/life balance will never be achieved, we can find a work/life integration that works for us. In addition to Kathleen's own powerful words, the book is punctuated by the voices of boldfaced entrepreneurs like Jessica Alba, Arianna Huffington, and so many more—their voices are the icing on an already rich cake. In the book we learn about the three Cs of culture, category, and customer; what the difference is between a big B and a little b breakdown; what building like a woman means, and why doing so is a force to be reckoned with; and the book features questions to get our brains going to build the life we want. Kathleen says more than once in the book that the goal is to build a life that is “so perfectly imperfect, imperfectly yours.” And that's just it—it's your life. If you are living your life for anyone but you, a life that doesn't fit anymore or maybe never did, a life that doesn't feel right—then right now is the time to change that and start living the life of your dreams. Kathleen and her book have a roadmap on how to do that. Kathleen is a founder herself and CEO of Grayce & Co., a strategy agency for women. She specializes in the female consumer and is a forefront and outspoken champion and advocate for women. This book is a tool for success that will teach you skills like life design, wellness practices, money management, brand strategy, sales pitches, and so much more; you'll leave with both a mindset and a skillset after reading. Kathleen is an award-winning serial entrepreneur, business strategist, TV producer, speaker, and now, author that has directed more than $500 million in marketing dollars and generated over a billion dollars in profit for clients ranging from Nike Women to Verizon. Let's dig into our conversation with her.   Build Like a Woman: The Blueprint for Creating a Business and Life You Love by Kathleen Griffith

Welcome to this week's Weekly Sceptic podcast – episode 32!  Nike Women's wear and Bud Light chose to commit financial suicide this week by hiring Dylan Mulvaney to be the face of both brands; Nick and Toby discuss how the Corporate Equality Index may be behind these decisions and how it's becoming increasingly hard to distinguish between the latest woke nonsense and satirical memes.  Trans rights activists have assaulted another person with whom they disagree – this time it was the turn of swimmer, Riley Gaines, at a speech she gave at San Francisco State University. Toby and Nick discuss this as well as how Gaines was held hostage and how the incident was reported as a ‘peaceful protest' by the mainstream media.  Still on the trans subject – Toby discusses the possible inflation of numbers of trans people in the last census.  Nick discusses Channel 4's descent into newer depths of depravity – with the release of their new show ‘Naked Education' – and Toby wonders whether flashers and perverts have simply moved from Hampstead Heath to Channel 4 in the past 30 years.  Toby and Nick discuss the Dalai Lama asking a young boy to suck his tongue and debate whether the whole thing was so unbelievably weird it wasn't in fact predatory behaviour… The boys also discuss Joe Biden sniffing the hair of young girls.  Toby talks about The Workers Protection Bill, explains what a terrible law it would be and his good work to stop it.  Nick talks about the Labour attack adverts against Rishi Sunak – and their rank hypocrisy.  In Birdwatch – Toby and Nick discuss Elon labelling NPR and BBC as ‘government funded media' and taking The New York Times blue checkmark away!  Nick and Dr Will Jones discuss this week's most interesting recent stories from the Daily Sceptic.  And finally, Toby and Nick compete for this week's Peak Woke title. Tom Suharto leads global strategy at Forsman & Bodenfors where his clients include Volvo, Crocs, Baileys, and H&M. Prior to that, he was at Wieden+Kennedy working on iconic brands like Nike and Disney. We discussed all of this and more, this week on the On Brand podcast. About Tom Suharto Tom Suharto leads global strategy at Forsman & Bodenfors, one of the most creatively awarded agencies of the past decade. His clients at Forsman include Volvo, Polestar, Crocs, Goldman Sachs, Baileys, and H&M, to name a few. Before joining Forsman, Tom spent a decade at Wieden+Kennedy, starting in their Shanghai office where he helped to launch Shanghai Disneyland and led strategy on Nike China. Then in Portland, Oregon, where he worked on Nike Women and Just Do It campaigns, helped launch Samsung flagship phones, and led strategy on Facebook Groups. Episode Highlights The Crocs brand is certainly having a moment … Following a recent trip to New York where my daughter was most excited about visiting the Crocs store (!), I had to talk to Tom about his work with Crocs. “With the pandemic, people started prioritizing comfort and Crocs leaned into that. And being unapologetic about being who you are.” The power of polarization. “We talk a lot with Crocs about polarization—how you want people to (ideally) love you or (not-so-ideally) hate you.” But you want that strong emotional response. The staying power of Just Do It. This work is cited so often, I wanted to dig deeper with someone who worked with this campaign while at Wieden+Kennedy. “For something like this to work, you need context. There needs to be a moment to meet. You also have to know your audience.” For Nike, this has always been the voice of the athlete. “That's why Just Do It works.” “Strategy in turbulent times is about prioritizing,” Tom shared of the uncertainty around a pending recession. “But brands adding value to people isn't going out of style—even in a recession.” What brand has made Tom smile recently? “I'm going to share a brand that made my kids smile, which, in turn, made me smile.” Just like my Crocs story! Tom told the story of the IRL “MrBeast Burger” that he and his kids love at the American Dream mall in New Jersey. Maryam Ajayi is a healer and an advocate for inclusivity in the Wellness space. With a background in political lobbying, in the midst of her career she felt the calling to support humanity in a very different way - by returning to the roots of healing. Her work is honorable, her voice strong, her presence empowering, making her a true leader for us all. And how does one suddenly feel the need to change careers - or pivot as they say - so unexpectedly? Having been in that position myself I can tell you, once you know - you know. I used to believe (even though I fought it every day) that I had to “choose” who I wanted to be and that I was to stick with that for the rest of my days… It all began in childhood… “so what do you want to be when you grow up?” I remember having at least 10 desires at a time: I wanted to be a chef, a ballerina, an astronaut, a teacher, a painter, and sometimes a mom. “Well no but which one?' They'd ask.. “you have to choose ONE”.  By the time I was headed to college nothing entertained me, I didn't know what I wanted to be, but I sure knew what I didn't want. Lucky for me I discovered Art - a field of study where at least I felt I could be free. Throughout life I navigated this path in many of it's iterations: as an illustrator, a retoucher, a graphic designer and finally as a fashion creative. As I got better and better I climbed that ladder, never feeling completely fulfilled, and one day the universe kicked back. As I hit a wall and picked myself up, piece by piece I had to put myself together and in doing so - as Maryam did - set off to help others as well. If and when you feel your calling, pay attention, that time means NOW. Always trust your intuition, listen to that voice within, the one you could clearly hear as a child… It's still the same, and it was always right. ABOUT MARYAM Maryam Ajayi is an energy healer, who practices both Reiki and Breathwork and entrepreneur with +10 years of experience across a multitude of industries ranging from politics to tech. She is passionate about de-stigmatizing the wellness industry, advocating for inclusive spaces for marginalized communities, and using her voice to empower and uplift others around the world. Recently, she founded Indagba, a company that helps socially conscious people and companies grow into their full potential through mindful business strategy, as well as Diversity in Wellness (DIW),  a community of diverse and inclusive leaders within the industry that gathers for an open dialogue and discussion in order to create a plan of action for bringing more diversity to the wellness industry. When you're set in your mind and you refuse to grow, and you're not open to new ideas, new methods, new ways of doing things, if your mind is already fixed, you become stagnant. You can't grow, you can't have a sense of fulfillment. You become extremely cynical and negative about everything. So you want to keep learning, keep growing. See, most people want it easy. But easy come, easy go. Embrace whatever comes to you, don't run from it, step toward it. But how do you hang in there during the hard, difficult times? You must have faith. You've got to believe in yourself. You've got to believe in your abilities, your ideas, unquestionably. You've got to have faith, and that faith, drives you into action. You've got to keep moving and keep plugging away. You gotta love it, it's gotta be what you are supposed to do. And say, "I've got to do this. This is my stuff, this is why I showed up." It's not going to be easy. When you want to change, it's not easy, if it were in fact easy everybody would do it. But if you're serious you'll go all out. Say "Yes. Do whatever is required. Just go out there. It's possible you can get what you want. It's necessary if you want it, you gotta go into action, you gotta be willing to experiment. You gotta be willing to fail and to succeed. It's you, it's on you, you gotta make that happen, nobody's gonna bring it to you on a silver platter and say, "Here's your dream manifested." Serena Marie, RD: Carbs Serena Marie, RD answers a Periscope viewer question, “When is the ideal time to eat carbs?” Keep in mind that every body is different. Carbs get a bad rap at times, so remember that Serena defers that we get carbs from non-starchy foods. Carbs create a spike in insulin that acts as the “annoying neighbor” to get your cells to open up and let sugar in. Carbs are best utilized before your workout. Post-workout (40+ minutes of cardio), you can eat carbs to replenish sugar for your muscles. For people who have trouble sleeping, having a serving of carbs an hour before bed might be helpful (like milk or fruit). Sometimes diabetics find that their blood sugar is elevated in the morning, so they might benefit from a lower-carb breakfast. Mike Clarke Mike Clarke joins the show to chat with Kari about the half marathon option for the Big Beach Marathon. Out of total registrants so far, approximately two-thirds (65–70 percent) have registered for the half marathon versus the full marathon.
